Owners and former management of Arik Air Limited have filed a N20 billion suit against the Federal Government and Ethiopian Airlines over the proposed takeover bid of the troubled airline. The Guardian learnt that suit was instituted at the Federal High Court, Lagos against Ethiopian Airlines, the Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Attorney General of the Federation. Ethiopian Airlines recently claimed to have submitted a formal bid to take charge of Arik Air, the leading local and flag carrier in Nigeria. However, Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), the government’s debt recovery special vehicle, which took over the airline last February, denied rumours of possible sale of the troubled airline to bidders, including recent claim by Ethiopian Airlines that it was in negotiations to acquire assets of Arik Air. The denial, apparently did little to assure the owners as a suit, dated September 6, was filed by Arik Air’s counsel, Babajide Koku (SAN), Chukwuemeka Nwigwe and Ezinne Emedom. In its statement of claim supported by a 20-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Chris Ndulue, a former director with Arik Air, the plaintiff asked the court to restrain the first and second defendants from further negotiations on its takeover. The plaintiff noted that AMCON had taken over the airline on February 8, which was challenged by its management via two suits already pending before the Federal High Court, Lagos. According to the plaintiff, the suits numbers are FHC/L/CS/827/17 and FHC/L/CS/826/17, adding that the negotiations by the defendants will render the outcome of the suits nugatory. “The plaintiff avers that the agreement of the second defendant with the first defendant will be wide ranging and intricately affect every aspect of the plaintiff herein, including but not limited to the day-to-day running of technical as well as financial management which will affect the plaintiff as being the largest domestic and regional airline in Nigeria. “The plaintiff further avers that the action taken by the first and second defendants will have a negative effect on the country’s image as the plaintiff being the largest airline will be pawned over to another country for management,” the suit stated in part. Arik was placed in receivership last February, following the airline’s inability to repay debts in excess of N300 billion to AMCON and other creditors in Nigeria and around the world. http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/09/owners-of-arik-air-limited-file-20.html |

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has revealed the secrets of how the Buhari’s Administration is reportedly working its way out of the recession. Mohammed made the revelation while speaking at the 4th Annual Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) in Kano on Wednesday. “Taking Nigeria out of remcession did not happen by accident. It is the culmination of months of hard work by the Administration and fidelity to its well-articulated economic policies, especially the Strategic Implementation Economic Recovery (2016) and the Growth Plan (ERGP) that was launched on 5th April, 2017,” the minister said. The minister cited some of the ”incrementally-positive steps” that got Nigeria out of recession to include the reversal of the consistent slowdown since 2014 to a level where the GDP finally grew by 0.55 per cent in the second quarter of 2017. ”This positive growth is attributable to both the oil and non-oil sectors of the economy. Growth in the oil sector, which has been negative since Q4 2015, was positive in Q2 2017. It rose by 1.64 per cent as compared to -15.60 in Q1 2017, an increase of up to 17 percentage points. ”The non-oil sector grew by 0.45 per cent in Q2 2017, a second successive quarterly growth after growing 0.72 per cent in Q1 2017. In particular, improvement in the non-oil sector was driven principally by strong growth in agriculture and solid minerals sector, and reversal in the previous contraction of the manufacturing and construction sector. This shows that the government’s economic diversification programme is working,’’ he stressed. He also cited some of the various impactful programmes of the Administration as including the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme, which today feeds 3,065,000 pupils in 14 states of the Federation pupils and has employed 36,000 Cooks across the country; the Conditional Cash Transfer that has seen about over 30,000 households benefit from the N5,000 monthly stipend; the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme under which about 120,000 people have benefited from the cooperative loans; and the N-power that has employed 200,000 people. He explained that the high food prices are being addressed with appropriate monetary, fiscal and trade policies, as stated in the ERGP. The minister recalled his earlier statement that the purveyors of hate speech, fake news and disinformation are working hard to obliterate the glaring achievements of the Administration. ”To naysayers, these positive developments do not constitute news. That’s why they make up their own fake news, and engage in disinformation and hate speech. They believe that by seeking to overwhelm the polity with fake news, disinformation and hate speech, they can easily obliterate the glaring achievements of the Buhari Administration. We must not allow them to dominate the media space,” he added. http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/09/minister-reveals-secrets-of-buharis.html |

Photo credit: Premium Times Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, says the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has sidelined him despite his contributions to bringing it to power. According to Daily Trust, the former vice-president said this in an interview on the Hausa service of the Voice of America (VOA) on Wednesday. Abubakar said he used his contacts and resources to help the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 presidential election. “Honestly speaking, I’m still a member of the APC; I was part of all the processes, including campaigns until success was achieved,” he was quoted as saying. “But sadly, soon after the formation of government; I was side-lined, I have no any relationship with the government, I’ve not been contacted even once to comment on anything and in turn, I maintained my distance. They used our money and influence to get to where they’re but three years down the lane, this is where we are.” Abubakar’s outburst comes at the same time Aisha Alhassan, minister of women affairs, declared support for him to run for office in 2019. Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa, Alhassan had described Abubakar as her godfather, saying she does not mind losing her job for supporting him. “Atiku is my godfather even before I joined politics. And again, Baba Buhari did not tell us that he is going to run in 2019,” she had said. “Let me tell you today that if Baba said he is going to contest in 2019, I swear to Allah, I will go before him and kneel and tell him that ‘Baba I am grateful for the opportunity you gave me to serve your government as a minister but Baba just like you know I will support only Atiku because he is my godfather. If Atiku says he is going to contest. “If because of what I said, I am sacked, it will not bother me because I believe in Allah, that my time has elapsed that is why… Baba is not a mad man like those calling for my sack. They have been sending it and spreading that if Baba sees this I will be sacked.” http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/09/buharis-government-has-abandoned-me.html |

All toil is under the sun. And all 'under the sun' is vanity. Therefore, all toil is vanity. The five candidates for "toil" are....WISDOM, PLEASURE, POWER AND RICHES, ALTRUISM, AND CONVENTIONAL RELIGION. This is because, in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. PLEASURE inevitably becomes boring sooner or later. POWER tries to control things and succeeds, but it cannot buy or control meaning. In ALTRUISM, we cannot work for the good of others simply because we don't know or cannot find the good of others. True RELIGION is our true knowledge of the Great Unknown, of God. This in itself is impossible, and vain. |

Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano state, on Sunday said security agents arrested suspected members of the Boko Haram sect in the state. He said this when he received Muhammad Sanusi II, emir of Kano, at the government house. According to the governor, those arrested have been moved to Abuja for interrogation. “The security agents also confiscated arms and communication gadgets from the alleged terrorists even as they divulged very useful information”, he said. He said the arrest was possible through local community intelligence gathering, and that the government would sustain its commitment towards protecting lives and property. The governor said, as part of efforts of his government to assist security agencies to do their work efficiently, vehicles worth millions of naira had been purchased and distributed. “We have also built 10 security dormitories, each capable of housing 60 security officials to help the police in surveillance along the major highways coming onto the state capital,” he said. Ganduje also told the emir that the government had committed huge resources to the provision of public infrastructure like metropolitan roads, hospitals and classrooms. He requested the support of the emirate council to continue his “good works”. Speaking earlier, the emir urged the government to focus more on economic development, especially alleviating the current hardship being faced by citizens. He also urged political leaders to caution their supporters against causing public disturbances. http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/09/boko-haram-suspects-arrested-in-kano.html |

Veteran disc-jockey Jimmy Jatt has said the supposed disagreement between Wizkid and Davido is healthy as long as it does not result into a physical altercation. According to Jimmy Jatt, both artistes spend time together and visit the same nightclubs, adding that it is the “sensationalism of the internet” that often magnifies their rift. “It’s healthy. They go to the same clubs and they party together and we don’t hear of any fight. It’s just the music and these days, the sensationalism of the internet,” he told HIP TV. “One word, clap back and everybody is talking.” The disc jockey further noted that the singers, by virtue of their pedigree and standing in the music industry, are “always” being talked about and pitted against each other even if they do little to initiate “conversation”. “Sometimes they don’t even put music out there but they are always in the conversation,” he said. “I think that’s good but sometimes it can be below the belt but let’s keep it clean. It’s like boxing, you can hit your opponent but not below the belt.” Wizkid and Davido have of late directed subliminal shots at each other on social media, resulting in fans picking sides and consequently giving more life to their seeming inability to see eye-to-eye. Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has won the Democratic Peoples Congress (DPC) primary election ahead of the Anambra governorship poll. Edcohie on Thursday emerged the flag bearer of the DPC for the November 18 governorship election. The actor, sharing pictures from his official unveiling as the party’s flagbearer, said: “And I won the party primaries today to become the flag bearer of the DPC. Democratic Peoples Congress. “I give God almighty all the glory. I thank everyone who made it possible. And to all who have placed their hopes and trust in me, I will not let you down. “It’s time for the youths, time for the masses. We are taking the government house of Anambra state come November 2017. “We will run a government that will put the welfare of the masses first. Our victory is the people’s victory.” A few days ago, the actor had enunciated on why he deserves to be elected governor of Anambra state. He had said: “Over the years as one of the most distinguished actors of my generation, I have put so much joy in the hearts of the people, (young, old, rich, poor) through my films and won their love. “It’s time to do much more for them through good leadership, transparent leadership, leadership that would put the welfare of the people first. The problems of Ndi Anambra have come to the last bus stop.” Of all the entertainers who have declared an interest in running for public office in recent time, Edochie is so far the only person to exhibit a determination to go the mile. He will contest against incumbent governor Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Oseloka Obaze of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Tony Nwoye, flag bearer of the All Progressive Congress (APC). http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/09/nollywood-actor-yul-edochie-emerges-dpc.html |
Beyonce has pledged to “help as many” victims of Hurricane Harvey as she can, as her home city of Houston, Texas, braces itself for more rainfall. “I remain in constant prayer for those affected and for the rescuers who have been so brave and determined to do so much to help,” the star said. She added that she was working with her charity and her pastor “to implement a plan to help”. Houston has been hit by unprecedented levels of rain, with more set to come. Officials estimate that more than 30,000 residents need shelter. At least nine have died in the Houston area. Other stars including Kim Kardashian West and Kevin Hart have also vowed to help. Beyonce, who grew up in the city’s historic Third Ward, is famously proud of her Texan roots, referencing Houston in multiple songs, including Run The World (Girls), Formation and Flawless. She filmed the video for Blow in the city’s Funplex roller skating rink – where she had one of her first dates. On Monday, she posted an Instagram tribute to Houston, telling residents they were in her prayers, while posing with a Texas flag. The star’s BeyGOOD foundation was established in 2013 and partners with global charities to provide housing, food and medical assistance to those in need. Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian West said she and her sisters and their mother were donating $500,000 (£386,000) to the Red Cross and Salvation Army, writing: “Houston we are praying for you!” Other artists including Drake and Travis Scott have sent direct aid and messages of support to Texas since the storm began. Coldplay, who had to postpone a concert in Houston last week because of the hurricane, have also written a song for those affected by the floods. They debuted the track in Miami on Monday night, with Chris Martin telling the audience it would only be played once. “This is because we all grew up loving country music, and of course that’s kind of what we think of when we go to Texas,” Martin said. “So, if you’ll bear with us, this is a new song and we’ll never play this again. We’re gonna sing it in Miami for everybody here, and we’re gonna send it over there to everyone who missed the show.” The song, called Houston, included the lyrics: “ There’s a harmony that bonds down there in Houston/Oh, Houston, you got to keep on keepin’ on. ” http://www.bgossipnaija.com.ng/2017/08/beyonce-offers-help-to-houston-flood.html |

Dwayne Johnson does more than save lives on screen. The Rock helps save real lives. Johnson was giving big respect Friday to 10-year-old Jacob O'Connor after the Detroit-area youngster helped saved his two-year-old brother Dylan from drowning — using CPR methods he learned from watching Johnson in the action-flick San Andreas. "This story touched my heart," Johnson wrote on Twitter. True story, as reported by ABC News in Detroit on Wednesday which Johnson tweeted out. Jacob found his brother face down in his grandmother's pool and acted quickly. "He pulled his little brother out and started CPR & chest compression. He saved little Dylan's life," Johnson wrote. "Jacob said he learned how to do this by watching me in his favorite movie, San Andreas." "I'm so amazed and impressed by this little 10 yr old boy's heroic actions and calm instincts in the middle of that kind of emergency distress," added Johnson. As Jacob himself told the news station about finding his brother in the pool. “I pulled him out and started giving him compressions,” Jacob said. Jacob's description of the scene where Johnson saves his screen daughter (Alexandra Daddario) in San Andreas is a classic. “There was an earthquake, then it caused a tsunami and then there was a daughter that was drowning and he had to get her out and he did the same thing,” Jacob said. Happy endings all around. Dylan was only in the hospital for a day and made a full recovery. His grandmother has installed double locks on the screen doors leading to the pool to keep the kid from wandering out again. And Jacob is a big hero. "I now need to shake young Jacob's hand," Johnson wrote. Oh, but Jacob. Don't get any ideas about flying a rescue helicopter like you saw in San Andreas. Only The Rock controls a bird like that. http://www.naijanewspapers.com.ng/2017/08/how-rock-helped-boy-10-become-hero.html |
