Dr. Osahon Enabulele, National President of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), on Thursday, ordered the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to call off its three-day warning strike, which started on Wednesday. Enabulele, who gave the directive in a statement issued in Lagos, advised the association to consider appeals from various sectors and give room for a well-articulated, constructive and mature engagement with the relevant agencies of government. “Having reviewed the issues of dispute and having initiated measures to correct the perceived anomalies with verifiable positive outcomes, NMA is embarrassed by this industrial action,” Enabulele said. The statement read that at the first National Health Summit held in Asaba in January this year, doctors resolved to stop strikes at the slightest provocation giving room for constructive and peaceful means of dispute resolution first. It warned that NMA would not withhold applying the strongest sanctions on any erring affiliate body or individual member that violates the constitutional provisions of the association. “The association will not hesitate to sanction any affiliate body for bringing the medical profession to public disrepute,” the statement read. Enabulele, however, apologised to the public for any avoidable deaths and health complications the strike might have caused. He also appealed to the Federal Government to correct the observed budgetary shortfall and apply all necessary administrative sanctions on any erring head of health institutions. Dr. Ismail Lawal, the National President of NARD, had on June 24 ordered his members nationwide to embark on a three-day warning strike from June 26, saying the industrial action was to protest Federal Government’s poor funding of the its members’ residency training. The association issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to meet its demands.. http://telegraphng.com/2013/06/medical-association-orders-resident-doctors-to-call-off-strike/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
The Nigeria Medical Association on Thursday threatened to sanction members of the National Association of Resident Doctors, who are currently on strike. The doctors, the NMA said, did not follow due process before embarking on the industrial action. The striking doctors are protesting against the alleged breach of agreement by the Federal Government. However, the NMA, in a statement by its President, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, and the Secretary-General, Dr. Akpufuoma Pemu, said it was "embarrassed by the doctors' industrial action." Frowning on the strike, the NMA recalled that during the first national health summit in Asaba last January, doctors resolved to stop embarking on strike without first seeking "constructive and peaceful means for dispute resolution." The statement said, "NMA therefore restates that whereas its affiliate bodies (of which NARD is one of the seven recognised) are at liberty to pursue their aspirations without trepidation, the NMA would however not withhold applying the strongest sanctions on any erring affiliate body or individual member for violating the extant laws/constitutional provisions of the association or for bringing the association/medical profession to public disrepute." Apologising to the citizenry for the "avoidable deaths and health complications" that could result from the strike, the NMA urged the leadership of NARD "to consider appeals from various quarters to call off the strike to allow for a constructive and mature engagement with the relevant offices of government." The association also appealed to the Federal Government "to correct the observed budgetary shortfall and apply all necessary administrative sanctions to any erring head of health institution." The NMA equally commended the Federal Government "for restoring the overseas clinical training for doctors, her resolve to institute for the firsttime a special budget for residency training, and other training initiatives." http://mobile.punchng.com/output.php?link=http://www.punchng.com/news/nma-threatens-to-sanction-resident-doctors-over-strike/ |
The Presidency on Thursday defended the prevention of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State from exchanging pleasantries with President Goodluck Jonathan by a security operative during dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday. It said the incident was purely a security issue that should not be politicised, especially by opposition political parties. The governor, who was sitting two tables away from the President, had risen to greet him but the security operative attached to the President stopped him halfway. In order not to create a scene at the event that had nearly all his colleagues and two heads of government (Joyce Banda of Malawi and Ellen Johnson- Sirleaf of Liberia) in attendance, Amaechi quietly returned to his seat and waited for about five minutes before leaving the venue. But as the Action Congress of Nigeria and Congress for Progressive Change berated Jonathan over the incident, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Dr. Ahmed Gulak, said it was tantamount to a breach of protocol and security if Amaechi was allowed access to his boss who was already seated before the governor arrived. Gulak said, “The President has a good relationship with all state governors and he meets with them regularly. The case in point is a pure security issue and it should be treated as a security issue that should not be politicised. “The question the ACN and others who may want to politicise this issue need to ask is whether the President arrived at the venue of the dinner and was already seated before the governor arrived. “Usual practice across the world is that once the President arrives a place, nobody whether a governor or not, is allowed entrance. That is the protocol. Even(Barack) Obama of the United States cannot be on his seat and a governor will be allowed to come in. “If that was the situation in this case that the President was already on his seat, it would have been a breach of protocol and security for any security person to allow the governor access to the President. Such a security person would have been sanctioned if he had done that.” Wondering why the ACN was interested in the matter, the presidential aide advised the opposition political parties to “concentrate on issues concerning them and stop politicising everything.” The ACN had in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, condemned the action of the operative and called on Jonathan to order an immediate probe into it. It said, “We are making this call because we do not believe that, in spite of the reported frosty relations between the two, President Jonathan – as the father of the nation – will lend the weight of his high office to such a demeaning action as exhibited by the presidential security personnel. “To believe that anyone occupying the esteemed office of the President of one of Africa’s most important nations will be a party to a situation in which any security aide will wilfully fence a state chief executive from paying his respect to the President at such an open gathering will be to think the worst of the occupier of that office. That is why we have chosen not to believe that this indeed occurred, and why we are calling on Mr. President to tell Nigerians that ‘it ain’t so’ “We shudder to think of what efforts are being made – including the use of national institutions – to undermine Gov. Amaechi if the treatment reportedly meted out to him at the dinner has the approval of the powers that be. We are even more worried at what will happen to a governor from the opposition who falls out of favour with the President, if a governor from the same party as the President can be so publicly humiliated.” ACN said it was particularly incumbent on the President to clarify the report because Amaechi, the authentic Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, extended an olive branch to him by attending the dinner, despite the fact that he (President) was publicly supporting the losing faction of the NGF, in what was being seen as a “democratic faux pas.” The party said the President must learn to separate politics from governance by rising above petty partisanship as he steered the affairs of state. On its part, the Congress for Progressive Change said it was clear to many discerning minds that “the government of President Jonathan is being run like a mafia organisation where you have the head at the Villa.” “This is the kind of price we pay when we sacrifice competence on the altar of exigency,” the CPC said through its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin. The party added, “We have always said it that the way President Jonathan is running this country; he will run it aground. “No Nigerian can be proud of what is happening in a situation where nations of the world are improving their democratic credentials; we are going towards further isolation. “A situation where a chief executive is being blocked by security apparatus of the President, you ask yourself what hope mortals like us have under the Jonathan government.” http://www.informationng.com/2013/06/why-governor-amaechi-was-stopped-by-jonathans-bodyguard-from-greeting-him.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi, has insisted that he is ready to welcome back Osaze Odemwingie and skipper Joseph Yobo into his team. The Big Boss and the players, have become estranged after they expressed their anger at their exclusion from this squad, without proper communication. However, after seeing some of his inexperienced players flop at the Confederations Cup, the former Togo boss is eager to have some experienced faces back. “They should just be themselves, play their game,” Keshi told KickOff. “Yobo is still my captain. It’s unfortunate that he’s not here, but he’s still the captain of the team. “Taiwo is still playing but I have younger players that are playing well. I have Juwon, who is not here. I have Benjamin Francis, and I have Echiejile whose performance has improved greatly. So it will be a difficult thing for Taiwo to get back in. “For Osaze, he still has a place in the team. I’m not looking for an apology from him. Osaze is somebody that I like very well and he knows that. The thing is, it’s about the team that I’m worried about. “I don’t want to have a player that will come in and divide the team, or want to come and do something to destabilize the team, because when the team is not together, it becomes very difficult to win. “I’m not saying he is going to come in and do that, but a little bit of what he has shown has told me that this is possible. “I really want to have him in the team, and I would like to give him another opportunity.” Keshi also admitted that Obinna Nsofor has not featured in his plans so far, because the forward has always been injured whenever he called him up and revealed that Martins was still in his thoughts. “The person I am really keen to have is Obinna Nsofor. Unfortunately, each time I call him, he’s always injured. Hopefully next time he will be fit. “Martins is coming back gradually. The last two call-ups he wasn’t in good shape but I needed to play him.” http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/06/27/keshi-wants-yobo-odemwingie-back/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=keshi-wants-yobo-odemwingie-back |

The phones were put through a series of benchmark tests to measure processor and memory performance, which show how quickly the phone will allow photo editing, running graphic-intensive games, and using several apps at once. Samsung Galaxy S4, the fastest phone of those tested, has a 1.9GHz quad- core processor which helped generate its impressive score. The phone received a mark of 3188 on the industry recognized test, compared to Apple iPhone 5′s 1664 score. Which? consumer watchdog said: “We put all the handsets through the same tests. Undoubtedly, Apple will upgrade its next iPhone when it launches this autumn. “For the moment, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 is the phone to beat when it comes to speed.” The second fastest phone was ranked as HTC One, which has a quad-core 1.7-inch processor and 2GB Ram. Which? said the phone “will provide plenty of punch for phone owners who use Gmail, Facebook, Instagram and Angry Birds all at the same time.” Sony ‘s Xperia Z came in a close third, followed by Google’s Nexus 4 which had just 39 fewer points. But the fourth place phone is more than £200 cheaper than any of those in the top three. The final phones to complete the set were Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 and the BlackBerry Z10, which came in fifth and sixth respectively. http://www.theheraldng.com/galaxy-s4-is-the-fastest-smartphone-twice-as-fast-as-iphone-5-study/ |
It is no longer news that son of ‘holiness preacher’ and the General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W.F Kumuyi walked down the aisle with his heartthrob over the week. However, teeming followers of the respected former university don have condemned the classy wedding, which they tagged: Un-deeper-life-stic. A close look at the weeding pictures of the couple posted online saw the bride donned in accessories that had been anathema to the ministry. She was clad in a transparent fitted stylish short sleeves wedding gown, eyelashes, earrings makeup and wedding flower, which had never happened in the history of the ministry. An angry follower of Kumuyi, after viewing the pictures commented, “People have refused to live their own life but rather attach it to an apron of hypocritical philosophy and man made doctrine. I exonerate the dynamic Senior Kumuyi,I think it is the people that have refused to change, I respect Kumuyi and his teachings but the people he is teaching are not learning, it is a pity, religion should embrace freedom, that is what the bible said. It only warned that you should not use your liberty for evil, or take the grace for granted.” To another Emeka Jane, the development would lead to something else. She voiced her conviction thus, “I believe that with this, Deeper Life will metamorphose into something else. Those (some members) who have been looking for an opportunity like this to dress as they like, will cease this particular opportunity. “And who says the lady is not a believer? Another John Edward querried, “Doing what pleases her without being condemned by God on a one in life time event, does that make her an unbeliever. One hymn says, ‘if heart condemns you not, you will have a glorious rest’ and please don’t indulge in sin by judging others, most especially servants of the most high, leave the judgment to God who created all of us.” He warned. http://www.informationng.com/2013/06/deeper-life-members-blast-kumuyi-over-sons-un-deeper-life-stic-wedding.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud changed the kingdom’s official work week to Sunday through Thursday, citing “lost economic opportunities” from being out of synch with the rest of the world on the Saudi weekend. The switch from Saudi Arabia’s Saturday-to-Wednesday work week, and Thursday-Friday weekend, was announced on Sunday in a royal decree carried on state print and broadcast media. The change overrides years of objections from religious conservatives that Saudi Arabia, home of the most important two sites of Islam, should keep a weekend distinct from that of the West. “We will be copying the Jews and the Christians,” prominent Saudi businessman Abdul Rahman Al Jeraisy said in 2007, when the king’s Shura advisory council considered the change. The Saudi stock exchange, Saudi central bank, and other financial institutions and government ministries will move to a Friday and Saturday weekend starting on June 29, the royal decree said. Schools would make the change with the start of the new academic year, the king said. Bringing the kingdom’s weekend in line with the rest of the world would “achieve significant gains for the kingdom, particularly in the economic arena,” the decree said. Friday is the main day of prayer for Muslims. With Sunday’s change, Saudi Arabia, following Oman, becomes the last country in the Gulf Cooperation Council to abandon a Thursday-Friday weekend. The kingdom has toyed with a Friday-Saturday weekend at least since 2007. The Shura Council tabled the change that year, in the face of religious objections. The Shura Council took the matter up for study again earlier this year, however. Observers said that signalled a royal will to make the change. Saudi newspapers have cited informal polls showing a majority of ordinary Saudis and businesspeople support ditching the Thursday-Friday weekend on the grounds of lost productivity. http://www.informationng.com/2013/06/saudi-arabia-changes-weekend-to-be-in-line-with-the-rest-of-the-world.html |
Councilors in the Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State spilled their blood as a result of stampede over six million Naira allegedly donated to them by the senator representing the Cross River northern senatorial district in the National Assembly, Professor Ben Ayade. Information from impeccable sources close to the chairman of the Council, Rev. Father Emmanuel Ikwen said following the chairman’s appeal to the senator, he kindly gave out the money to ease some financial challenges in the Council. But according to close sources, the councilors disagreed over the method with which to share the largess amongst themselves. As a result of the hot disagreement, fight allegedly ensued amongst them leading to one of them spilling blood when he punched his enraged colleague. Nigeria Police at Obudu have already detained some of the warring councilors pending investigations. Further telephone calls to the DPO were not answered as at press time. According to one of the sources who insisted his name should not be mentioned, “Professor Ben Ayade, our senator, gave us six million naira. There was argument over this money so that there was an uproar among the councilors and Hon Fidelis Otobo was alleged to have slapped Hon Rose Abua of Otugwnag Central. It was a serious fight between Hon Rose and Otobo who are both from the Otugwang axis . It was Tobo who slapped Rose and I was not part of it. Blood gushed out from her cheeks! We shall deliberate on it on Monday and any one found guilty would be sanctioned.” Another explained that trouble started when the leader of the Council’s legislature, Hon Ugah Andeshi refused to give Hon Tobo Fidelis his allowance who served as the deputy leader following his election as deputy leader to replace one Hon Orim who was sacked on the instructions of the council chairman. “The party asked us to maintain the status quo; that is, the Deputy Leader who was sacked should be returned to office while Hon Tobo who was elected to replace him should resign and the man did that but he had served as deputy leader for the month of May and thus was entitled to his full allowance as deputy Leader for that month and ought to be paid”, said our source. It will be recalled that the Obudu council Executive and some members of the legislature have been up in arms against each other following the plans by Dr Ikwen to return as Chairman who was opposed to by the former council secretary, Ken Acla who is alleged to have been sponsored by Professor Ben Ayade, the Senator representing the northern senatorial district of the state. http://legisreportsng.com/politics-councilors-shed-blood-over-senators-largesse/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) on Thursday clarified that Diana Rotimi Oyinlola, an undergraduate, who delivered a baby in the toilet on campus did not attempt to kill the baby. The were reports in a section of the media since the incident happened at Moremi hall on Wednesday that Oyinlola attempted to ditch the baby. However, a statement signed by Biodun Olanrewaju, the university’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), on Thursday described the reports as “incorrect”. Mr. Olanrewaju said that an interaction with the mother of the baby by the Security Unit of the university among other university officials, revealed that the student was willing to have the child. He said that there was “no attempt whatsoever to conceal the pregnancy, not to talk of aborting it and wanting to flush the baby away through the Water Closet (WC). “The truth is that there was a delivery of a baby boy by an inexperienced mother, who in her naivety, thought she was pressed by call of nature, while she was actually in labour pains. “Prior to the childbirth, the inexperienced mother had discovered that she was bleeding and went to the toilet only to observe that something expelled into the water closet. “It was at that juncture that she screamed and shouted for help when one of her friends Satope Oladayo, heard her distress voice and quickly traced her to the toilet from their room. “It was when Satope entered the toilet and found the baby that she (Satope) called an elderly cleaner for assistance because the two of them were novice in childbearing,” the statement stated. The father of the new baby is a 400- level student of Mechanical Engineering, while the 20-year-old mother is also a final year student in the same university. |
Barcelona doctor Ricard Pruna, has asked new signing Neymar, to gain some weight ahead of the new season, so he can reach his peak physical condition. The former Santos star has undergone his Barca medical and completed his €57 million move, but the club’s doctor still feels the Brazilian needs to bulk up a bit. “My first impression is that Neymar needs to gain a pound or two. Our medical inspection was done quickly and his weight is just another data point,” Pruna told the club’s official website. “We’ll get to know the player over the course of the season and we’ll constantly add to our data input. With this information we’ll know what his ideal weight should be. “The first impression is that he weighs 64.5 kilos and he has a tendency to lose weight. Perhaps he needs to add a kilo or two, but I can’t say exactly how many.” The 21-year-old is currently showing great form at the Confederations Cup in his home country and has scored two stunning goals already, to lead Brazil into the semi-finals. |
There exist many words whose meanings are opposites of themselves. You may ask, how can a word be an antonym of itself? Through polysemy and homonymy, a word that is pronounced or spelled the same way can have opposite meanings. A word that is an antonym of itself is called a contronym. Here’s the list of some contronyms: 1. Clip Clip can mean “to bind together” or “to separate.” You clip sheets of paper to together or separate part of a page by clipping something out. Clip is a pair of homographs, words with different origins spelled the same. Old English clyppan, which means “to clasp with the arms, embrace, hug,” led to our current meaning, “to hold together with a clasp.” The other clip, “to cut or snip (a part) away,” is from Old Norse klippa, which may come from the sound of a shears. 2. Continue Continue usually means to persist in doing something, but as a legal term it means stop a proceeding temporarily. 3. Fight with Fight with can be interpreted three ways. “He fought with his mother-in-law” could mean “They argued,” “They served together in the war,” or “He used the old battle-ax as a weapon.” 4. Flog Meaning “to punish by caning or whipping,” flog shows up in school slang of the 17th century, but now it can have the contrary meaning, “to promote persistently,” as in “flogging a new book.” Perhaps that meaning arose from the sense ‘to urge (a horse, etc.) forward by whipping,’ which grew out of the earliest meaning. 5. Go Go means “to proceed,” but also “give out or fail,” i.e., “This car could really go until it started to go.” 6. Hold up Hold up can mean “to support” or “to hinder”: “What a friend! When I’m struggling to get on my feet, he’s always there to hold me up.” 7. Out Out can mean “visible” or “invisible.” For example, “It’s a good thing the full moon was out when the lights went out.” 8. Out of Out of means “outside” or “inside”: “I hardly get out of the house because I work out of my home.” 9. Peer Peer is a person of equal status (as in a jury of one’s peers), but some peers are more equal than others, like the members of the peerage, the British or Irish nobility. 10. Toss out Toss out could be either “to suggest” or “to discard”: “I decided to toss out the idea.” |
The President of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Yinka Gbadebo has told Nigerians to hold the Nigerian Police Force responsible if anything happens to him. The Police were said to have threatened Gbadebo, ordering him to do thorough investigations before blaming them for the incident. Gbadebo spoke in Ibadan after he was released by men of the Oyo State Joint Security Task Force, codenamed ‘Operation Burst’. He said they have been making calls to him following his statement that the IGP should resign owing to the incessant killings of Nigerian students by the Police Force in the last six months directly or indirectly. He also said that normalcy would not return to the University of Uyo, UNIUYO, until the VC, Prof. Comfort Ekpo is removed. He charged the Federal Government to remove the woman with immediate effect as according to him, “her negligence and ineptitude led to the killing of our senate president and other comrades.” Meanwhile, the family of the late former Oyo State NANS JCC chairman, Oladimeji AbdulAzeez, was contacted early Monday morning. It would be recalled that the deceased who graduated from the University of Ibadan, hailed from Ibadan South East Local Government. Gbadebo and others, as at the time of filing this report, were on their way to Lagos to inform Donald’s family officially about the incident after which he will move to Owerri to collect the bodies of the “fallen martyrs” and later to FMC Umuahia to visit the survivors of the auto crash. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/06/my-life-in-danger-nans-president-cries/ |

big-t:what happened to Moses? |
Despite putting in a fairly unconvincing performance, the Africa Cup of Nations champions were boosted by the showing of the Rossoneri starlet in the 6-1 win over Tahiti. It is rare that football fans get the chance to witness a 6-1 scoreline at a major international event, even rarer that the performance of the victors is widely criticised during and following the clash, and rarer still that it is the losers who are universally heralded as ‘heroes’ after the final whistle. Yet, Nigeria’s opening Confederations Cup clash against Tahiti in Belo Horizonte was anything other than a typical tournament contest. Despite recording an ostensibly convincing scoreline, the Super Eagles’ performance did little to suggest that Stephen Keshi’s young squad can make a big impact in this tournament. Indeed, beyond the performance of sprightly and assured forward Nnamdi Oduamadi, who bagged a hat-trick on the day, there was little to commend Africa’s champions. Oduamadi is part of Keshi’s second, post-Afcon revolution. While nations like France, Greece and Italy have, in recent times, demonstrated an unswerving loyalty to the squad of players that won them a major international crown, there has been no such sentiment from the Nigeria boss. Since the glorious Cup of Nations victory earlier in the year, a number of players have been dispensed with due to their perceived failings on the testing stage. While Nosa Igiebor and Ike Uche have moved away from the setup, opportunities have arisen for Oduamadi, Anthony Ujah of Koln and the returning Joseph Akpala. The 22-year-old looks like the pick of the bunch, and in six international appearances to date, has already found the net on four occasions. While his hat-trick against Tahiti will have made international news, it was his vital equaliser against Kenya in the World Cup qualifier in Calabar which initially endeared him to Super Eagles fans. They have every right to be excited about a player who has been on the radar for many years, without having received the senior international acknowledgement that many felt was his destiny. A feature of Nigeria’s youth teams, Oduamadi missed the chance to play in an international tournament back in 2009, when a hamstring injury prevented him from joining the squad at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup. Now, Oduamadi is finally relishing the opportunity to shine in an international tournament. Against Tahiti his goals demonstrated composure and a refinement of play, although he was surely aided by the fairly hopeless defending with which he was faced. Nigeria fans were quick to praise his performance and, more broadly, his quick integration into the national side. His trio of goals also prompted comment from Adriano Galliani, AC Milan’s vice-president, who called for to youngster to be immediately promoted to the club’s first team ahead of pre-season. Oduamadi, like Nwankwo Obiorah, Joel Obi and Ogenyi Onazi, forms a collective of prodigal Nigerian stars snapped up by Italian clubs at a young age. While Obi and Onazi have made inroads at Inter and Lazio respectively, Oduamadi and Obiorah have been predominantly sent out on loan since arriving in Europe. Since leaving Nigeria in 2008, fresh from the production line of the Pepsi Football Academy, Oduamadi has spent time at Genoa, Torino and Varese. Over the last two seasons in the Italian lower leagues, Oduamadi has honed the talents that were on display against Tahiti. He is a versatile, intelligent attacking player, equally adept on the flanks, stretching a side with his pace and ingenuity, as he is in the centre of the park, playing a more integral role to offensive moves. His composure and clinical finishing were evident against Tahiti, although this probably wasn’t the context to be making sweeping statements and evaluations on a player’s ability and future prospects. Galliani’s comments will doubtless be a major spur to Lagos-born youngster, and Milan fans following the Confederations Cup may well choose to keep a closer eye on their Nigerian investment. Normally a player as raw as Oduamadi would be unlikely to realistically be ready to contribute at a club of Milan's stature, but these are modern times for the Rossoneri . Once such a heartland for the merits of experience, the team have steadily offloaded their creaking veterans in recent seasons. If his goalscoring form continues this summer, don’t be surprised to see Oduamadi find himself a place among the burgeoning African talents already beginning to define the identity of this post-Ancelotti Milan. It certainly won’t continue to be as easy as it was against Tahiti, but the Confederations Cup gives the youngster a prime opportunity to demonstrate his confidence and composure before a global audience —expect him to take it.

(AFP) – Nigeria captain Vincent Enyeama said on Sunday that the row over bonuses that delayed the squad’s arrival at the Confederations Cup had not been resolved, but the players were putting it to the back of their minds. The African champions did not arrive in Brazil until the early hours of Sunday morning, just 36 hours before their Group B opener against minnows Tahiti on Monday, after missing their scheduled flights on Thursday. The players were unhappy about being offered bonus payments of $ 2,500 (1,873 euros) following a 1-1 draw with Namibia in World Cup qualifying and had demanded double that amount from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Mikel, Enyeama and Anichebe A truce was eventually brokered by Sports Minister Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, but on the eve of their entrance into the Confederations Cup, Enyeama revealed that the players were still not satisfied. “We haven’t settled anything, but we’ve moved on and everything is normal,” the Maccabi Tel Aviv goalkeeper told journalists. “We accept the criticisms, we’re responsible for our actions and we stay as a team. “For now, this act is behind us. We’re professionals. We don’t want to talk about this — it’s about the past and we don’t want to spend our energy on these things. “After the championship we’ll revisit it, but for now we’re done.” Coach Stephen Keshi, seated beside Enyeama at the pre-game press conference, refused to criticise his players, but admitted he was concerned about the effects of their late arrival. “I’m not going to tell you I’m upset with the players. The decision depends on the circumstances around it,” he said. “We’re here, which is the most important thing. We’re here to make Africa proud and Nigeria proud. Whatever has happened before is behind us and we just need to concentrate and play our game. “I’m a bit worried about fatigue. We have been working mentally and otherwise so the team is in shape, but the fatigue is what I’m worried about. I hope everything will be OK for tomorrow (Monday).” Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi had apparently been ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury, but Keshi said he could yet link up with the squad if he is able to prove his fitness in Nigeria. “I’m still waiting for a call from Onazi,” Keshi said. “He’s back in Nigeria to fix something on his knee and I hope he’ll call me with good news he’s coming back. “There’s a time limit. When we arrived this morning, it was the first thing we addressed. If we can get any information from Onazi, we can go ahead before the game.” Although Tahiti have just one professional player in their 23-man squad and are ranked 107 places below Nigeria in the world, Keshi dismissed the suggestion that Monday’s game in Belo Horizonte would be a walk-over. “I don’t think there’s a weak team in this tournament,” he said. “With all due respect to Spain, Brazil and everyone, I think every team here has made their way to be here and deserves to be respected. “Tahiti deserve a lot of respect for being here. It’s true my team has a lot of fatigue, but we’ll try to work something out. “We’ll prepare for Tahiti like we prepare for Uruguay, Spain, Japan or whoever we play against.” |
The 2013 Confederations Cup now has its full complement of eight teams after Nigeria belatedly arrived in Brazil on Saturday night, hours after the start of the tournament. The African champions had been due to arrive on Thursday, but a dispute with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over bonus payments meant the squad missed their initial scheduled flights. The players were angry that they were only offered a bonus of $ 2,500 (1,873 euros) for their 1-1 draw with Namibia in World Cup qualifying on Wednesday. However, despite ongoing discord, the squad finally arrived at their Belo Horizonte hotel at around 03:00 local time (06:00GMT) on Sunday, having flown in from Windhoek in Namibia via Johannesburg and Sao Paulo. The delay means that coach Stephen Keshi has barely 36 hours to prepare his side for their Group B opener against Oceania minnows Tahiti on Monday. The squad are scheduled to have their first training session in Brazil later on Sunday. |
Hassan Rouhani was yesterday declared Iran’s new president in a surprise outright election victory that ends eight years of conservative grip on the top office. “This victory is a victory for wisdom, moderation and maturity… over extremism,” local media reported Rouhani as saying in a first statement after his triumph. The 64-year-old moderate cleric, a former top nuclear negotiator who has championed more constructive engagement with world powers, won outright with 18.6 million votes, or 50.68 per cent of those cast, the interior minister said. Rouhani is expected to improve Iran’s relationship with world powers unlike President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad whose nuclear programme has been a subject of discord. Crowds marched through Vali- Asr Square in central Tehran carrying pictures of the winner and chanting pro-Rouhani slogans. In northwest Tehran, people gathered in Kaj Square and cheered as passing cars sounded their horns in approval. Rouhani’s tally was enough to ensure there would be no run- off against the runner-up, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who came a distant second with 6.55 per cent of the votes. Top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili came third with 11.35 per cent. Former Revolutionary Guards commander Mohsen Rezai and ex-foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati won 3.88 and 2.26 million votes respectively.

Mr Akinwale Goodluck, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN Nigeria, has announced the decision of the company to discontinue SIM swaps by proxy with effect from June 7. Goodluck said this in a statement made available on Thursday in Lagos. He said that after June 7, customers who wished to swap or replace their SIM cards as a result of their phones being stolen, destroyed or misplaced must do so in person. According to him, the decision was taken in order to protect customers’ data and preserve the overall integrity of the SIM swap process. “In recent months, unscrupulous elements have started to exploit the proxy SIM swap process and there have been incidents of unauthorised people fraudulently obtaining SIM cards belonging to others. “The implication of this decision is that customers will now have to appear in person at the service outlets nearest to them to request and obtain new SIM cards. “Such requests will be treated promptly after proper ID validation from the SIM registration database and upon presentation of valid identification such as ID card, international passport or driver’s licence,” he said. Goodluck added that the customer would also be required to answer security questions before a new SIM card would be issued. He also called on the company’s subscribers to urgently register their SIMs in view of the June 30 deadline or risk suspension of their mobile lines. Goodluck urged customers to register all SIM cards in their possession including those in phones, laptops, POS machines and all other SIM-enabled devices. Mr Akin Braithwaite, the Customer Relations Executive of MTN, said that the organisation attached great seriousness to the issue of customer and data security. Braithwaite said that a significant number of SIM swap-related fraud were committed by people who were very close to the victims and had access to their personal data. He said that the new requirement that customers should carry out the SIM swaps in person would check the activities of fraudsters in this regard. |

Facebook hashtags could make it easier to find others on the social networking site and market your business, if the hashtags feature is soon added as insiders and a recent Wall Street Journal report have suggested. Hashtags, a feature up until now associated mostly with rival Twitter, have forged an accepted place in marketing on social media sites. Flickr added hashtags recently to its latest mobile app. Google+ and Pinterest also recognize hashtags. If Facebook adds hashtags that will round out the top social sites. Hashtags (a word or phrase prefixed with the symbol #) could improve the way business owners and entrepreneurs network, interact and share on Facebook. Hashtags make information easier to find, especially if you give a unique hashtag to an event or topic of news that is currently hot. People tag their content with a hashtag phrase, and others can find it by searching on such phrases. Reports have been unspecific about when the company may roll out the new Facebook hashtags feature. But until then, below are five ways suggested by Janette Speyer and Katrina McNeill of Web Success Team about how to use hashtags in your business marketing. In anticipation of hashtags being implemented on Facebook at some point, I’ve described how hashtags could be applied in the context of Facebook: 5 Benefits of Hashtags for Marketing 1. Find Better Conversations It goes without saying that conversations are still happening on Facebook, but they can be difficult to locate using simple Facebook search tools. Because you are often networking with people you know on Facebook rather than discovering new people who share your interests, hashtags may be a huge help in connecting with people in your niche or industry, just by finding their conversations. 2. Join a Chat Of course chats have long been possible on Facebook, but hashtags could make them so much easier to start and follow. Instead of setting up chats on a particular fan or personal page, hashtags would make it easy to organize a chat around a topic, niche or interest. This would allow others to view that chat later through the same hashtag. 3. Do Some Research You can do some simple searching to locate pages of interest on Facebook today, but the search may be difficult with some terms yielding literally hundreds of results. Hashtags, if incorporated on Facebook as they are on Twitter, might make it easier to monitor trending topics and to locate specific conversations built around the topics in which you are most interested. 4. Locate Tribes Distinct hashtags may make it easier to locate specific groups of Facebook users. For example, those having discussions around very specific hashtags like #smallbusiness or even #BizBookAwards. Knowing these hashtags ahead of time would make it easy to connect with these tribes more quickly and join in their discussions. 5. Check Out the Competition Obviously, hashtags on Facebook could give you the opportunity to see in a different way what audiences are saying about your competition (and, for that matter, what they are saying about you.) They would allow you to track conversations beyond your competitor’s Facebook page to see what messages are going out to other groups of users and what kinds of responses they solicit. Remember, Facebook has not yet implemented hashtags, and according to the Wall Street Journal, they are “not imminent.” No one knows exactly when they will be implemented. Still, the above advice is good for using hashtags on any social network. Last week we reported why some businesses might want to rethink for their marketing and communications needs. Will hashtags change anyone’s mind, if they’ve given up on Facebook? We doubt it. But for dedicated Facebook users, it could add more functionality to help convey information and build an audience around specific topics. Share how you will use hashtags for your business, when they are launched, and whether the new feature will change how you look at and use Facebook in the future. |
