A primary six pupil of Role Model School, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, has emerged one of the youngest pupils to obtain the Microsoft Certified Professional certificate, SAMUEL AWOYINFA reports A nine-year-old pupil of Role Model School, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos, Jomiloju Tunde-Oladipo, has emerged the youngest Nigerian Microsoft certified professional. He came tops among 21 pupils who sat for the professional examination in Lagos. He is now a Microsoft office specialist in office word 2010. Jomiloju scored 769 out of 1,000 in the examination held in August. In his examination score report, the slim-built boy performed well in Sharing and Maintaining Documents, Formatting Content, Applying Page Layout, and Reusable Content, among other subjects. By the feat, Jomiloju has joined the league of young Microsoft certified professionals, including Nigeria’s 10- year-old Anjolaoluwa Seyi-Ojo; an eight-year-old Indian, Lavishnashree, and two Pakistanis, named Arfa and Thobani. Microsoft Certified Professional is a certification programme provided by Microsoft Corporation. The certification is tailored towards building skills on Microsoft business solutions, focusing on client-end operating systems such as windows XP, Vista, Windows7 among others. Jomiloju, whose certificate was signed by the Chief Executive Officer, Microsoft Corporation, Steven Ballmer, says he did not achieve this feat easily, but through persistence and hard work. He says, “It was not all that easy, because I had attempted the examination last year, I did not make it then. But I remained focused and I put in a lot of hard work. “At home and in the school, I am always on the computer. After school hours, if am not doing anything, I will go to my Information Communication Technology teacher, to learn more.” Jomiloju sat for the examination when he was in primary Five. Relating his experience, Jomiloju says, “In all, I answered 20 questions, after answering a question, the computer takes you to another one. And at times, there will be an instruction to skip the next question. But the programme still directs one to come back to those questions one had earlier skipped.” But was he really scared having failed once to meet the cut off mark? He stresses that he was really afraid due to his earlier experience but he was optimistic of having success, because according to him, he has prepared well. He also gives kudos to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tunde-Ladipo, for their support and imbuing in him the ‘can do’ spirit in achieving the success. He says, “My mum and dad were very supportive. They always tell me never to give up and eventually it paid off. Moreover, they had bought the latest Dell laptop. Again, I am always fascinated about computer. The way it works and the process, and the way it organises data.” Jomiloju who is a left-handed writer, according to his parents, has been a gifted child. He has always been in love with gadgets. His mum, Toyin, says, “Jomiloju since he was baby had loved playing with gadgets, he was never interested in toys. He would pick up remote controls for both TV and air-conditioner, and he would correctly use them for their specific functions.” His father adds, “It is not that we are unnecessarily indulging him but he is such a brilliant child. He’s multi- talented. He plays the saxophone, he’s good on keyboard, he acts very well and he’s a good swimmer. “Each term, he participates in school drama and quiz. He also gets prizes in other subjects, apart from ICT.” Does Jomiloju want to pursue a career in software/hardware project like Bill Gates and Steve Job? Spotting an innocent smile, the youngster nods his head in affirmative. His school administrator, Mrs. Adesimbo Banjo, who speaks glowingly about Jomiloju, says the feat recorded by her pupil is a tonic for other pupils. His ICT teacher, Mr. Mathew Alo, also commends Jomiloju for the feat. He adds, “Jomiloju was taught all the necessary things he needed to know and he came out as the most outstanding among 20 others from different schools in Lagos. His class teacher, Mrs. Elizabeth Ogunrinola, says Jomiloju takes his studies seriously. She states, “He is not only good in ICT, but in other subjects. He is hard working and well behaved.” For Jomiloju, he’s not resting on his oars yet, as he says he is still going to seek more Microsoft certifications. “I still want to sit for more examinations. I will still do excel and power points,” he says. http://www.punchng.com/news/boy9-becomes-nigerias-youngest-microsoft-certified-professional/

Samsung has beaten rivals such as Apple in the race among major digital technology companies to launch a “smart watch” that it hopes will kick– start a new generation of fashionable and connected wearable devices. Unveiling the much–anticipated watch at the IFA electronics fair in Berlin, Samsung’s chief executive, JK Shin, said: “Consumers want their daily lives to be easier and more enjoyable. Samsung Galaxy Gear benefits consumers by integrating smart device technology even deeper into their everyday lives, and bridges the gap between the mobile device and fashion worlds to create truly wearable technology.” He said it would “free users from the need to constantly check their smart devices. It provides what we call ‘smart freedom’ by allowing users to choose how, why, when and where they are connected”. Apple revolutionised the market for consumer electronics in 2007 when it launched the iPhone to popular acclaim but competitors such as South Korean giant Samsung, using Google’s Android operating system, have since taken market share from the California–based company, which is now under pressure to maintain its reputation for innovation. Samsung hopes that its new watch device will pile more pressure on its American rival, which is shortly expected to reveal a new version of its iPhone. Nicola Shenton, head of device and product portfolio at mobile network operator EE, said: “Smart watches form part of a growing trend in wearable technology that we’re now seeing emerge. “They give both consumer and business users a new gateway to their digital lives, enabling them to retrieve emails and social updates, or even browse the web, without having to even touch their phone.” http://www.punchng.com/i-punch/samsung-unveils-smartwatch/

I was opportuned to go with my dad to an airport in South East. As we exited the lounge, we saw two men (who were most likely americans) smoking at the entrance to the Lounge. My dad stopped and challenged them, telling them that smoking isn't allowed anywhere in their country in public places so they shouldnt practice it here. I thought they will pick offence but they immediatly threw the cigar away. I asked my father what gave him such boldness and he said that smoking isn't allowed in public places but i still see people smoking even in Gas stations. Please is there a law in Nigeria which stops people from smoking in public places? |

A recent audit at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may have landed the governor, Lamido Sanusi, in hot waters as he is said to have been served with a query by the Presidency. The forensic audit which was handled by foreign experts brought in by the government revealed some financial activities inconsistent with the position of government. Sanusi is said to have already responded to the queries and they are being studied to provide background for certain actions the government could take against him. According to an inside source, the audit report had also indicted the CBN board down the line, with a number of steps recommended for action. One of the measures, it was gathered, was to ensure that the National Assembly carried through the planned amendment of the CBN Act, to ensure that the budget was approved by the lawmakers. “The government discovered a number of inconsistencies in the books of the CBN and there is also the question of failure to establish and build institutional capacity to back up government reforms. “The government is concerned about agriculture but, so far, the CBN has reduced funding of that sector to mere interventions, after it failed to build agricultural banks and other credit agencies that should provide needed support to the sector. “If care is not taken, the reforms embarked upon by the current minister will not be institutionalised and that will have multiplier effects on the achievements of this government,” a source said. It also said the government had equally asked experts to X-ray the impact of CBN policies in recent times, especially the steps taken alongside banking consolidation policy. It was confirmed that the report frowned on the huge turnout of workers as a result of the implementation of the policy, which was described as a huge disincentive for the original policy. As a result of the damning reports, it was gathered that Sanusi was actually penciled in for sack, information that triggered a flurry of lobbying activities. A number of influential senators were said to have been reached immediately the query went to Sanusi, while some influential northern leaders also started lobbying the presidency to shelve the planned removal. “A number of issues were raised about issue of CBN autonomy, but I can tell you that a date was actually set for Sanusi’s ouster last week. The lobbying appeared to have worked,” a source said. It was also gathered that the administration had been embarrassed on several occasions on the political incorrectness of certain actions taken by the CBN governor. It was learnt that the heat on the CBN governor had made him change his earlier promise to leave before the expiration of his tenure and that he had recently told his close associates he would, at least, stay on till June next year. http://www.theheraldng.com/cbn-governor-sanusi-in-trouble-over-audit/ |
A football manager in an induced coma following a car crash opened his eyes when he heard his team had won their opening game. Wayne Thorne, 33, had just started his second season in charge of Larkhall Athletic, when he was involved in a head-on collision. He spent a week unconscious after suffering a ruptured artery and 16 crushed ribs. He was "given the boost he needed" when his wife Mandy broke the news that his team had won 4-3 at Bridport in the Western Football League Premier Division. Paul Rankin, the chairman of Larkhill, said Thorne's love of football was a main part of his life. "It was the first league game of the season, away to Bridport. We won and that news was passed to Wayne and gave him a little boost. We had a follow up result this week which has continued to put him in good spirits. Football is his life, along with his family. We are keeping him involved as much as we can without putting any stress on him." The collision happened two weeks ago as Thorne travelled home from his job as a kitchen fitter in Cirencester. He was taken to hospital in Bristol where doctors found he had torn the main artery in his heart, shattered 16 ribs, which punctured his lung and broke his sternum, the Bath Chronicle reported. He also shattered his hip and pelvis and suffered a fracture below his left knee. Thorne underwent a series of operations and spent a week in an induced coma but on 10 August, he opened his eyes when he was informed of his team's victory. Mrs Thorne tweeted: "We have told Wayne the score & when Gaz said Lyno scored he opened his eyes." Doctors told her that her husband was lucky to be alive. "Football and sport and being active, that has been his life, so when he was in his coma we were told to talk to him," Mrs Thorne said. "On the first Saturday Larkhall had a game and me and his brother told him the score and he opened his eyes. I know studies have shown that they can hear you and me and his brother truly believe he heard us. It was brilliant to see, because he absolutely loves his football and is so dedicated to Larkhall Athletic." http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/aug/21/manager-coma-car-crash-larkhall-bridport

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was literally shut yesterday as wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, gathered about 30,000 women for a rally seen as a move to gather support for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The women, drawn from the 36 states of the federation, converged on the Eagles Square as early as 8:0am. Obviously hired, some of them were later sighted in the front of the Ministry of Finance building, where they were given N1, 000 each for participating in the rally. For several hours, there was no free-flow of vehicular movements in and within the Central Business District (CBD). The Three Arms Zone, where the Eagle Square is located, was cordoned, making it difficult for civil servants to access the Federal Secretariat, Ministries of Finance, Foreign Affairs and Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation. Other routes within the metropolis were also affected due to the earlier road show organised by officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). Although the event was organised by the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) in collaboration with the office of the First Lady, female personnel of the armed forces as well as the para-military services also staged a match-past in honour of Mrs. Jonathan. The presence of Vice President, Namadi Sambo, further gave credence to the significance of the rally, strategically geared towards 2015. First Ladies of South Africa, Belize and Saharawi Arab Republic were in attendance as well as the wife of the PDP National Chairman, Fatima Bamanga Tukur, who led female officials of the party to the event. Some of the inscriptions on the various banners displayed at the rally added humour to the event. Some of them read: “Thank you Mr. President for 35 percent women affirmation,” “Thank you Mother of the Nation,” “Go ahead in 2015,” among others. Addressing the gathering, the vice president said the curent administration has been very fair to women. He said: “We have actively supported women in politics. We’ve significantly increased the representation of women in government appointments. “We have fulfilled the 35 per cent affirmative action by appointing women into key government positions. Our SURE-P targets over 500,000 women. http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/2015-jonathans-wife-rallies-30000-women-for-pdp/ |
THE National Union of Pharmacists, Medical Scientists and Professionals Allied to Medicine (NUAHP), on Thursday, declared an indefinite strike across all tertiary health facilities in the nation. The union, in a statement entitled; “Declaration of Indefinite Strike,” made available to journalists on Thursday, said it took the decision because the Federal Ministry of Health had failed to meet its demands. Signed by the national president of the union, Comrade Felix Faniran; General Secretary, O. C. Ogbonna; and other executive members, the statement noted that NUAHP had given the Federal Government an ultimatum which it later extended by 15 days when the Ministry of Health raised some complaints about it. The ultimatum, however, expired on Thursday with the Federal Government yet to move to address the issues at stake. “Therefore, the union has no alternative than to declare an indefinite strike. The national secretariat, therefore, directs all units, states and geopolitical zones of NUAHP to proceed on industrial action as from 8.00 a.m. Of 16 August, 2013,” it noted. http://www.tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/item/19278-health-workers-begin-indefinite-strike.html |
SOLDIERS attached to the Edo State joint military anti- robbery unit, code named Operation Thunder Storm, yesterday, paraded one Kabiru John from Nasarawa State, who allegedly defrauded several persons of over N10 million while parading himself as an army major. Parading the fake army major and other suspected criminals at the 4 Brigade Army Headquarters, Benin City, Army Public Relations Officer, Capt. Roselyn Managbe, said the suspect had perpetrated frauds, including tricking one Ayeni Friday and one Tony Kabaka into parting with their vehicles. Kabiru John, the fake army major She explained that Kabaka parted with his Lexus SUV , in exchange for securing entry into the army school for his son, as promised by the fake army major. Kabaka, chairman of Akugbe Ventures, is one of the consultants to the Edo State government on revenue generation. Managbe said soldiers from the brigade also arrested suspected robbers, including Monday Aigbe, an ex-convict and a suspected narcotic dealer, Mrs. Josephine Ochini. According to her, “on June 20, 2013, one Mr. Ayeni Friday of 17, Eguaeveon Avenue, Benin City complained to troops of Operation Thunder Storm that he gave his vehicle, a blue Chrysler 300 2005/2006 model without registration number to one Major John Kabiru of 4 Brigade Provost Company for repairs on May 28, 2013. He said efforts to retrieve his car from him proved abortive. “Our preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Kabiru John had been parading himself as a major in the Nigerian Army. It was also revealed that he claimed to be serving in 4 Brigade as the Officer Commanding the Provost Company. It was further revealed that he was always seen around dressed in full military gear while involving himself in all forms of shady deals and duping unsuspecting victims. “Mr. John Kabiru confessed that the Lexus SUV which was recovered from him with registration number EDO BF 607 USL belonged to one Mr. Tony Kabaka of 18, Etete GRA, Benin-City. “The suspect claimed that he trickishly collected the Lexus SUV from the victim with the promise that he would secure admission for his son into the Nigeria Defence Academy. He also said he graduated in Electrical Engineering, from Nasarrawa State Polytechnic. He said: “I served at 82 Battalion, Jos, but I was dismissed in 2006, with the rank of private. I was doing it (impersonating) because friends that I knew thought I was still in the army. I have learnt to think good things, I have learnt to stay out of crime and stop parading myself wrongly.” Some of the items recovered from the fake army officer included one fake JTF staff tag, International passport, combat gears, an army kit bag, a digital camera and vehicle number plate. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/how-fake-army-major-duped-citizens-of-n10m-vehicles/

AbujaFollowing the panic alarm button the Malawi Football Federation pressed recently over the insecurity of the UJ Esuene Stadium as venue for the crucial Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifier encounter next month, world football governing body,(FIFA), has formally written to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), ordering it to furnish it with the full security detail concerning the venue. The Malawi Football Federation had petitioned the Zurich Headquarters of FIFA raising the alarm over the safety of the Calabar Stadium, praying that FIFA prevails on NFF to take away the World Cup qualifier encounter billed for September 6 from the Cross River State capital due to security concerns. The Chairman NFF Security Sub- committee, Chief Effiong Johnson, who spoke to Daily SunSports on the security alarm on telephone from Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State further confirmed that FIFA had on Monday, written to the federation directing it to furnish it with the details of the security concern raised by the Malawian soccer governing body. “Let me first confirm to you that the federation formally received the correspondence from FIFA on the security alarm, the Malawi soccer federation raised concerning their safety at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar. The federation will certainly reply the letter from FIFA and furnish them with the full details of the security at that stadium. “I was surprised and shocked with such security alarm. I want to think that it was mere mischief, antics and distractions from the Malawians.” Meanwhile, four players of Malawi have been decamped for harbouring women in their hotel rooms during camping for the crucial World Cup match against Nigeria. According to a Malawi newspaper monitored online, the players, while playing in the regional COSAFA Cup competition in Zambia sneaked women into their rooms. The names of the players were not disclosed. The newspaper reported that their Belgian Coach, Tom Saintfiet was amused with the conduct of the players and recommended their suspension and also imposed fines. However, one of the culprits, who is a foreign based professional was included in the squad that was expected to face Rwanda today in a friendly match in Kigali. The President of Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Walter Nyamilandu, reportedly said the said player was among those given the benefit of doubt “depending on how they reacted.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/sports/fifa-writes-nff-over-calabar-stadium/ |
There was a mild drama yesterday at the centre for the verification of certificates of primary school teachers in Edo State as a teacher in Asologun Primary School, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, Benin City, Mrs. Augusta Odemwinge, could not read a sworn affidavit she tendered as part of her credentials. State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, who paid an unscheduled visit to the state Staff Training Centre venue of the exercise, was appalled that a teacher could not read her own document, saying; “If you can’t read, what do you teach the pupils, what do you write on the board?” State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Comrade Patrick Ikosimi, who was also at the venue to monitor the exercise, said the teacher’s failure to read her own document was “an embarrassment.” On arrival at the centre, the governor took time to peruse some of the teachers’ credentials and documents presented. When Mrs. Odenwingie took her turn for the exercise, the governor, who listened to her defense, asked her to read the affidavit she presented, however, she was stuttering and was unable to read coherently, reading as if a kindergarten were learning to read, to the consternation of everybody around. Comrade Ikosimi, who described Odemwingie failure as an embarrassment, said the union was in tune with the state government on the need to sanitise the school system. He said: “We are committed to partnering with the government to reposition education in the state. What this teacher has just displayed is a show of shame; it shows the decadence in the education sector. “As the chairman of NUT, I have written to the governor that we are in total support of what he is doing. He should properly involve the NUT so that together, we can fish out those that are not viable so as to sanitise the system,” he said. It will be recalled that at a televised town hall meeting on education on August 1, Governor Oshiomhole has disclosed an audit carried out by the state Information and Communications Technology Agency showed that 789 out of 1, 379 teachers obtained Primary School Leaving Certificates before the age of eight or nine years old. The governor further disclosed that only 1, 287 teachers representing nine per cent of 14, 484 total number of teachers in the state have accurate and proper records. About 91 per cent have various forms of discrepancies in their records, according to him. Meanwhile, three female teachers, Mrs. Patience Osadolor, Momodu Aisha and Patience Oroghene, who were kidnapped at gunpoint in Orhogbua Primary School in Ovia North East Local Government Area penultimate Tuesday have been released unhurt. Our correspondent reliably gathered that the kidnappers released the victims after allegedly receiving N7 million ransom. However, the payment could not be confirmed from authorities of any of the security agents in the state even though a family member, who did not want his name mentioned, confirmed the payment. http://nationalmirroronline.net/new/verification-edo-teacher-cant-read-own-certificate/ |
For about two hours Monday night, governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) traded blames before ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on the crises threatening to cripple the ruling party. The ex-President had asked the governors to speak on their grievances. Each had three minutes. President Goodluck Jonathan was not at the meeting, which was tagged “exploratory”. The open complaint approach, however, created tension, with governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom) engaging in a shouting match. After taking complaints from all, Obasanjo said the meeting would continue last night. It was learnt that there were eight issues tabled at the tension-soaked meeting at the Presidential Villa. They are: division within PDP leadership; disagreement between some governors and the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur; the implosion in the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF); crises in some states; Anambra governorship poll; Rivers crisis; reconciliation within the party; and the alarm raised by five Northern governors on how to keep the party intact and win the 2015 poll. It was learnt that most of the governors spoke on the eight issues. Obasanjo chose only to be a listener and a moderator. A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Obasanjo made sure he met alone with the governors. Contrary to the expectations of some of the governors, President Goodluck Jonathan was not at the session. “Apparently acting on representations made by various governors to him, Obasanjo set the tone of the meeting, which he said had to do with the challenges being faced by PDP. “He told us that the meeting would be ‘exploratory’ and each of the 23 governors of the party will be allowed to talk for only three minutes on why the party is in crises and the polarisation of PDP governors. “Shortly after the introductory remarks, the governors started speaking on their grievances and how to resolve the crises rocking the party. “Virtually all the governors agreed that things were upside down in the party.” A governor reportedly told Obasanjo: “We know you can address the challenges facing PDP. If we go into election in this state, our party will lose in 2015. Please, don’t be tired to resolve these problems.” Another source spoke of how a governor said there was no point discussing the points being raised by five Northern governors because, in his view, they had made up their mind to go to another party. “But Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso interjected by saying: ‘No one is defecting to another party; we are not going to any new or merger party. We will remain in PDP and restore order. That is not the intention of the five governors when we decided to intervene.” A governor, who spoke in confidence, said: “Some of us tried to draw Obasanjo’s attention to the fact that the disagreement over the election of the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, was an integral part of the crises affecting PDP. “Some anti-Amaechi governors shouted no, no, no. They insisted that the NGF crisis had nothing to do with PDP problems. They said the NGF problem was unconnected with the stress in PDP.” On the reported shouting match between Amaechi and Akpabio, a governor who pleaded not to be named, said Amaechi attributed the crisis to the attitude of some PDP governors, “who will always go behind their colleagues to tell the President a different thing to curry favour”. Amaechi was quoted as saying: “Each time we all took a collective decision, some of our colleagues will go and tell the President a different story to show that they were not part of it.” But the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Akpabio, disagreed with Amaechi saying “that is not correct; it is not true.” Akpabio said the ongoing reconciliation within the PDP is giving chieftains of the opposition party sleepless night. Responding to a question, the source, a governor, said: “After exhausting ourselves and trading blames, Obasanjo merely adjourned the meeting to Tuesday night. “The former President did not blame anyone and refused to pass verdict on comments or submissions of the governors.” It could not be immediately ascertained if President Goodluck Jonathan would be part of the second round meeting, which was in progress last night. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/pdp-crises-governors-clash-at-abuja-peace-meeting/ |
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), on Saturday said it would build a three kilometre long auditorium. The General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye said this during the Holy Ghost Service at the Redemption Camp in Mowe, Ogun. The Holy Ghost Service was one of the programmes lined up for the 61st Annual Convention of the church. Adeboye said that the new auditorium which would be built at the mission’s camp ground at km 46, Lagos-Ibadan expressway would also be three kilometres wide. The cleric said that the existing auditorium which was built in year 2000 with a capacity to sit one million people at once could no longer accommodate millions of people who attended service. According to him, the project will start soonest and will be completed before the 62nd Convention in August 2014. He solicited for donations from members toward making the project a reality. Adeboye had earlier said that a total of 72 babies were born at the camp between Monday and Friday. The convention continues on Saturday with the anointing service and will end on Sunday with the ordi http://247nigerianewsupdate.com/rccg-to-build-3-km-long-auditorium/ |
Nigeria has taken serious steps to put the country’s first man into space in 2015 with the assistance of the British government. The federal government, according to dailymail.co.uk, has accepted £300million this year alone to set in train ambitious plans to launch the country’s own rockets. The medium said the first Nigerian astronauts are being trained to join Russian, Chinese or American missions within the next two years. Britain’s support for Nigeria’s space initiative and other countries has been criticised by its nationals, who said that the Department for International Development’s budget will rise by 35 per cent in real terms by 2015. They said while aid costs are ballooning, spending on the military, the police, border control and care homes is being slashed by the government. Britain is also spending about £280million a year on aid to India, another country with its own space programme. Jonathan Isaby from the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: “When budgets are tight both for families and the government alike, people cannot understand why ministers are sending more of our hard-earned cash overseas. Taxpayers find it especially unacceptable when their money is sent abroad as aid to developing countries which then somehow find sufficient cash to fund the likes of a space programme. “It is totally unacceptable that British taxpayers’ money is effectively subsidising Nigeria’s efforts to send an astronaut into space”, he said. Nigeria’s space programme started in 2003 but its first satellite lost power and disappeared from orbit. It now has three in space, NigComSat-1R, NigeriaSat-2 and Nigeria-Sat X, the first to be constructed by Nigerian engineers. Although Nigeria has bought its own satellites and launched on Russian rockets, the federal government has built laboratories which it hopes will produce its own space craft by 2028. http://leadership.ng/news/100813/nigeria-moves-put-first-man-space-0 |
TWO former Heads of State, President Ibrahim Babangida and General Abdulsalam Abubakar, on Friday paid a joint condolence visit to Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN), even as Abubakar predicted higher political responsibility for the governor after his tenure. The duo said they were in Lagos to condole with the governor and his siblings over the demise of his father, Pa Ibrahim Ademola Fashola. A statement issued by the spokesperson to the governor, Hakeem Bello, disclosed that the condolence visit took place at the Lagos House, Marina. “I keep saying that without peace there wouldn’t be any country. Without peace, there wouldn’t be people and without peace there wouldn’t be means of livelihood,” the statement quoted Abdulsalami Abubakar as saying. He also used the opportunity to congratulate the governor on the future he is building, not only for Lagos State but for the country, praying that as he leaves his present office he would assume greater responsibilities in the country. The statement further explained that the two Generals were visiting to pay their condolence to the governor and his immediate family and, through him, the Fashola family. Former President Babangida, according to the statement, prayed to God to give the immediate family the courage to bear the loss, adding that it was gratifying that Pa Fashola left behind an important gift in Governor Fashola. “In Islam, we do pray for long life but long life does not mean living for 100 years or 500 years. We are gratified that Papa left and he left one important gift that is Governor Raji Fashola. So, we are grateful that God has spared his life to see a governor that everybody respects in this country, and I also pray that one of your children will also take the footsteps you have taken after Papa,” said Babangida. Fashola thanked both leaders for the visit, saying that with the visit, they had not only honoured his late father, but also honoured his family, and prayed that honour would never depart from their households. Fashola also lent his voice to the appeal for peace in the country by both leaders, saying he was doing so because his late father was a man of peace. “And I hope that the leadership that you both (Generals) provide for this country will continue to endure and that through that leadership, much more enduring peace will spread around this country, and that the promise of this country will come to pass in your lifetime,” the governor said. http://tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/component/k2/item/18790-ibb,-abdulsalami-visit-fasola.html |

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly signed a new five-year deal with Real Madrid worth £75million to keep him at the club for the rest of his career. The Portugal forward had been linked with an emotional return to Manchester United but seems to have settled his differences with the La Liga giants. Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates after scoring. AFP PHOTO But he will instead hope to link up with Gareth Bale should the Wales star complete his protracted, world-record move from Tottenham. Madrid-based newspaper Marca reports that Ronaldo will earn around £900,000 more each season than Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, making him the highest-paid player in Spain. The 28-year-old is believed to have struck a deal with Real to increase his share of his image rights, which previously stood at 60 per cent. Ronaldo, who cost Madrid £80million in 2009, met with club president Florentino Perez in Los Angeles and the pair ironed out their differences. The former United and Sporting Lisbon player had remained coy on his future at a press conference over the weekend. ‘The situation still hasn’t been resolved and I don’t think now is the right time to talk about it,’ he said. ‘Perhaps we’ll be able to give more concrete news about this further down the line but now the only thing in my remit is to train and work.’ http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/ronaldo-signs-new-75m-mega-dea/#sthash.G4M8eaht.dpuf |
I am compelled to respond to a report in your news paper; Daily Trust of 31th of July 2013 in which Senator Babafemi Ojudu was erroneously linked to some other Senators who you reported does not have a single bill to their names. In the case of Senator Babafemi Ojudu, that is not factual. As at today, Senator Ojudu has listed two bills. The first is A Bill for an Act to make provisions for Mandatory Compliance with and Implementation of all Legislative Resolutions and for Other Matters Connected Therewith, 2012 (SB.199) which has been read for the first time and listed for second reading. The second is A Bill for an Act to Establish the Nigerian Political Debate Commission with responsibility for the Conduct and organization of Public debate for Candidates of Political Parties in Nigeria which is pending with the Rules and Business Committee of the Senate under the Chairmanship of Senator Ita Enang. Besides these two bills, the whole of Nigeria stood in applause when Senator Babafemi Ojudu uncovered the bribe-for-job scam being perpetrated by some elements in the Federal Civil Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and also fought gallantly on the floor of the Senate for seventeen (17) young Nigerians from whom N250,000 each was collected for employment into NSCDC, only to be later sacked. This singular and commendable effort by Senator Ojudu led to a Senate investigation into these shady deals. Senator Ojudu, it was, who also punctured the fraudulent gaping holes in the budget of the Federal Ministry of Works, exposing in the process how roads for Ekiti are annually listed under other states of the federation. All these are besides his noticeable efforts on various adhoc committees of the Senate such as the adhoc committee on the probe of sale of public properties by the BPE, amongst others. In all the five Committees he is serving, he has been very productive and meticulous as could be attested to by anybody who has had anything to do with those Committees I also want you to note that the job of a senator is not restricted to sponsoring bills. Besides this, there are oversight functions, committee work, constituency responsibilities, among many and in all of these, Senator Ojudu has performed creditably well as attested to by commendations from well- meaning Nigerians and his constituents. Only yesterday, Senator Ojudu and other members of the Senate Committee on Defence and Army just returned from a three-day tour of several dangerous spots in Borno and Yobe States in the quest to find a lasting solution to the Boko Haram onslaught in these areas. It took great courage and patriotism for him and his colleagues to visit these areas which many public officers in the country consider a no-go area. These facts are verifiable and as such I will like to call your attention and that of your Editor to these facts. I will equally want you to cross-check and report your findings, giving it equal reportage. I request these given the embarrassment and grave concerns which many of his constituents and friends have expressed concerning the said report. It is my fervent hope that as a leading newspaper devoted to the essential principles of reporting the truth and only the truth, you will consider these facts provided as we are not opposed to investigating our claims. We await you to correct the notion that Senator Babafemi Ojudu has been idling away in Abuja these past two years…it is not true and can’t be. I thank you in advance for your response. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for the restoration of his rights as a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Atiku, a founding member of the PDP, left the party after his disagreement with former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a result of which he was forced out of reckoning. He left to contest the 2007 presidential election on the ticket of the Action Congress (AC). Atiku retuned to the PDP in 2010 and got a waiver approved at the PDP National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on September 15, 2010. He subsequently contested the presidential ticket of the party with President Jonathan. He lost. But Atiku has not been participating in PDP’s activities. He has not been getting invitations, according to his associates. “He is being tactfully de-registered, yet again so that he does not realise his full right as a member of the party,” the associates said. Atiku was not invited to the last National Economic Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja. He is also not invited to meetings of the Board of Trustees (BoT), led by Chief Tony Anenih. The latest exclusion of the former VP from the party’s activities is the dropping of his name from the delegates’ list to the mini-convention, which will hold later this month. Atike last month wrote to PDP National Chairman Bamanga Tukur about his exclusion from the list. He is yet to get a reply to the letter. Atiku hails from Adamawa State. Tukur is also from Adamwa. In his letter, Atiku described his exclusion as “curious”, saying it amounted to the withdrawal of his privileges as a former number two citizen, founding father of the ruling party and member of the Board of Trustees (BoT). Atiku, who claimed that his enquiries at the PDP National Secretariat confirmed the omission, urged the PDP National Chairman to make a public statement on the matter as a prelude to the correction of the anomaly and restoration of his right as a party leader. The former Vice President recalled that he had been prevented from re- registering at his ward in the past by those who hijacked the party from the legitimate founding fathers. He said the omission of his name contradicted the PDP Constitution. He recalled that he applied for and obtained a waiver along with other returnees to the party to participate in the last presidential primaries. He alleged that the amended constitution of the party was being implemented proactively to shove him aside from the party. Atiku said: “Section 8, Sub-section 8(b) of the Constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2012, as amended, states that “a person who desires to rejoin the party after leaving it, unless given a waiver by the National Executive Committee of our party, be placed on probation for a period of less than one year. “The 53th meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of our party, which held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at the PDP Secretariat, approved the application of the Adamawa State Executive Committee for my waiver alongside similar applications from Imo, Abia, Anambra and Kogi states. as a result of that waiver, I proceeded to participate in the presidential primaries of our great party as well as other activities of the party. So, my membership or return to the party predated the 2012 constitution amendment”. Abubakar maintained that the omission of his name contradicted the Section 32, Sub-section 1(a) of the PDP Constitution, which states that the Board of Trustees members shall consist of “all past and serving Presidents and Vice Presidents, who held or hold the respective posts as the members of the party and who are still members of the party”. He added: “As a member of our party, I look forward to the respect and privileges conferred on the office of the Vice President and founding fathers of the party by our party constitution. I therefore, request for a correction and restitution of my right to attend the forth-coming special national convention of our great party and also membership of the Board of Trustees”. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/atiku-to-pdp-restore-my-rights/ |
Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, to comply with the order of the National Industrial Court in the interest of industrial peace in the nation’s health sector. The President of NIC, Justice B.A. Adejumo, had in his ruling, ordered the implementation of Shift Duty, Call Duty and other allowances for members of JOHESU but dismissed their reliefs on the National Health Bill. However, JOHESU, in a letter to Chukwu by its Chairman, Dr. Ayuba Waba; Secretary, Yusuf Badmus; and Chairperson of Joint Health Professional Association, Dr. Godswil Okara, copies of which were made available to journalists on Sunday in Abuja, gave the minister a 21-day ultimatum to comply with the court order “or risk a massive industrial action in the health sector.” The letter was entitled, ‘Compliance and implementation of National Industrial Court of Nigeria judgement in respect of suit No. NICN/ ABJ/238/2012, delivered on Monday, July 22, 2013’. When contacted for his response on the threat, the Special Assistant to the Minister (Media and Communication), Mr. Dan Nwomeh told our correspondent that he had yet to see the court order. http://www.punchng.com/news/fresh-strike-looms-in-health-sector/ |

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Umar Shehu, has on Tuesday confirmed that the convoy of President Goodluck Jonathan was involved in an auto crash the day before, leaving 14 persons injured. According to the eyewitnesses, three confessional policemen, three mobile policemen, one member of the civil defence corps, as well as one official of the state branch of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and six civilians were “seriously injured”. Mr Shehu claimed the state government had since released funds for the treatment of all the victims. He added that some of the victims have been discharged but those who have serious fracture were still at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia. According to him, the accident happened when the vehicle of a prison officer ran into the convoy of the president and collided with one of the riders, who somersaulted and thereafter ran into the crowd. “They are all responding to treatment at the hospital. Some have fractures on their legs. “The prison officer sustained minor injury. He is still in police custody while investigation is ongoing,” he said. It will be recalled that the president was in Lafia for the inauguration of the newly constructed Federal High Court and Ta’al Model School constructed by the present administration in the state. The Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan yesterday said that the Law programme at the Lead City University remains invalid until accredited by the National University Commission, NUC. The three-man panel of judges, in a ruling delivered yesterday, set aside the judgment of the lower court which ruled against the NUC, alleging the invalidation of the law degree of the private university. It will be recalled that a graduate of law in the university who made first class, Rev. Segun Alli, had dragged the NUC to court for alleged invalidation of the law degree of the school and denying him admission into the law school after it had granted approval to the university to run a law faculty. In her lead judgment, which was also unanimously adopted by the two other judges, Justice Chidi Nwaoma Uwa, upheld the appeal of the NUC, declaring the running of the institutions law programme without accreditation as an illegality. The judgment which lasted over three hours saw the courtroom wearing a sober mood by students studying law at the university and their parents. Justice Uwa said the student does not have a locus standi to have dragged the NUC to court as the matter under contention was between the NUC and the university over compliance with directives to set up a valid law faculty. Explaining further, she said the appeal of the NUC was upheld due to the failure of the university to obtain and meet the requirements of the NUC and National Council of Legal Education before graduating students for the same course. According to her, the university had admitted students to study law in the university on May 22, 2005 whereas the university got a licence to operate on June 9, 2005, stating that; There was no accreditation, there was no validation and so I set aside the judgment of the lower court and uphold the appeal. http://mobile.nationalmirroronline.net/read.php?index=3601 |
The journey started more than three years ago. Following the 2007 presidential election, which the former President, the late Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua, acknowledged as flawed, opposition parties returned to the drawing board. Many people believed that without a formidable alliance or collaboration, their chance of defeating the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was slim. But the opposition figures ignored the strength in unity to their peril. Thus, to observers, they failed to learn from the lessons of history. The lessons of past botched alliances were confounding. Collaborations, alliances and mergers collapsed in earlier dispensations because politicians differed on the sharing of political offices. It was also evident that some of them thought that fusion may rob them of the relevance conferred by their feather-weight parties. Ahead of the 2011 polls, the talks between Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), led by Chief Bisi Akande and Congress for Progressive Congress (CPC), led by Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, broke down, owing to “irreconcilable perceptions”. However, the progressives woke up from their slumber last year, spurred into action by the national drift. It was evident that the ship of state, as warned by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in the Second Republic, was about to hit the rock. The PDP Federal Government, argued Akande, failed the nation. The progressives needed to embark on a collective rescue mission to halt the impending doom, he said. The Constitution provided the tonic. It allows the parties wishing to come together to form a bigger platform to do so, in accordance with the laid down rules. Although the conditions for the merger or fusion of political parties are challenging, necessity compelled the leaders of ACN, CPC, ANPP and a section of APGA to take the decisive action. Initially, a section of ANPP and CPC was reluctant. They were reassured that the project was in the national interest. The merger committee set up by the parties came up with the name, the All Progressives Congress (APC), which was ratified by their leaders. The group started to exist as a political organisation seeking registration as a political party. The committee chaired by Chief Tom Ikimi also drew up its manifestoe, logo, slogan and Constitution. The PDP was jittery. After informing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that they wanted to form a party, the three parties dissolved into the APC at a special convention in Lagos. After the exercise, their national chairmen, secretaries and treasurers wrote to the electoral agency. They accompanied the letters with the appropriate fees. It was at that stage that the electoral agency announced that some politicians had approached it for the registration of their political association as a party. The acronym of the strange association clashed with the authentic APC’s. This generated a controversy. INEC later disowned the group. A few weeks ago, the proposed party submitted the list of its interim national officers. The claims were subjected to verification by INEC, based on the guidelines for the registration of parties. With its registration yesterday, APC became Nigeria’s second largest party. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/the-road-to-apc/ |
