One day after registration, NYSC prospective corpers who had registered started receiving callup letters. Suspicion arose when the callup numbers on the callup letter differed from that in the green card. Some who saw callup letters didn't see the states posted to. Some received SMS of callup numbers different from that on the green card. Then, later in the evening a broadcast message was circulated around social media which goes thus: Nysc Abuja 2016 BATCH 'A' MOBILIZATION: FRAUD ALERT! The attention of the NYSC Management has been drawn to the fraudulent mailing of “Call-up letters” to prospective Corps members of the 2016 Batch 'A'. Management wishes to inform prospective Corps members that posting to states of deployment has not commenced; but will be done at the appropriate time in line with our laid down processes. The so-called “Call-up letters” being mailed to prospective Corps members now are handiwork of cyber criminals and should, therefore, be disregarded. Prospective Corps members are particularly warned not to make payments for posting or change of posting as that is most likely the motive of the cyber criminals. Management will inform prospective Corps members as soon as their posting letters are ready for printing online or delivery to their institutions of graduation. Signed: Management The question is: was the website truly hacked? Because some who contacted officials of NYSC reported that they denied that posted has started. Who can verify? |

A Federal High Court, Lagos, on Thursday said that Digital Satellite Television (DStv) had the right to increase its subscription rate as it did last month. Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke then struck out a suit filed by some aggrieved subscribers challenging the company’s recent 20 per cent increment on subscription. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that DStv is being operated by Multi-Choice Nigeria Ltd. The aggrieved subscribers: Messrs Osasuyi Adebayo and Oluyinka Oyeniji, who are also lawyers, had filed the class action on behalf of themselves and all other DStv subscribers across the country. The plaintiffs had sought an order of the court restraining Multi-Choice from implementing the 20 per cent increment on DStv subscription rate which began on April 1. Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, in a ruling, upheld the preliminary objection filed by Multi-Choice, and ruled that the suit amounted to an abuse of court process. The judge rejected an argument by the plaintiffs that Multi-Choice should not to be given right of audience having failed to abide by an earlier ex- parte order of the court restraining the company from implementing the increment. Aneke said the court was bound to entertain arguments from all parties before it, irrespective of the alleged violation of the court order. He further ruled that the suit disclosed no reasonable cause of action, as the plaintiffs were not under any obligation to continue to subscribe to the services of Multi-Choice in the face of the increment. Meanwhile, the judge upheld Multi-Choice’s argument that the suit failed to comply with mandatory provisions of Sections 97 and 98 of the Sherrifs and Civil Processes Act. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sections stipulate that a writ to be served outside jurisdiction must be concurrently issued. The plaintiffs, through their counsel, Mr Yemi Salma, had urged the court to discountenance such argument, as Section 19 of the Federal High Court Act, had clearly defined the jurisdiction of the court to be one within Nigeria. Salma had further urged the court not to punish any irregularity in the issuance of the writ on the plaintiffs, as such emanated from the court. He also stated that such irregularity could be corrected by the court in doing substantial justice. However, the judge rejected the plaintiffs’ argument, and upheld the objection. He was also silent on an argument by the plaintiffs that the objection should be treated as a demurrer, which has been abolished from the rules of court. Demurrer is an attempt by a defendant to get dismissal of a suit without filing any process to the substantive issues. In the instant suit, Multi-Choice only filed preliminary objection, and did not file any process against the substantive suit. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the judge had earlier rejected an attempt by a human rights lawyer, Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, to opt out of the suit. Adegboruwa had filed an application to be joined as a co-plaintiff, but later filed an application to opt out. Aneke, however, said he was persuaded by a Supreme Court decision which stated that once an objection was raised challenging jurisdiction, the court was duty bound to first determine the objection before entertaining any other application. According to the suit, the plaintiffs had sought an order of the court compelling the NBC to regulate the activities of Multi-Choice so as to prevent what they described as an arbitrary increment in subscription rates. They specifically urged the court to impress it on the NBC to be alive to its statutory responsibility by ensuring that Multi-Choice is compelled to implement the pay-per-view scheme in Nigeria. They said that with that subscribers would only pay for programmes they watched, as was done in other parts of the world where Multi-Choice operated. But Multi-Choice, through its lawyer, Moyosore Onigbanjo, argued that the plaintiffs had no cause of action, adding that a court did not have the power to regulate the price of services that a business was offering to its customers. It said that neither the government nor the court could regulate prices in Nigeria, being a country that operates a free-market economy. Multi Choice also said that under its conditions of agreement, especially clauses 40 and 41, it was free to change the fees payable by subscribers for the services it was offering them. Nigeria is an effigy of many things with corruption and bad politicking on top of the pile much of which has to do with everything that has gone wrong in this country. With the recent achievement of being ranked the 39th most corrupt country in the world by Transparency International, it’s pertinent to cast the spotlight on the characters who have contrived to make Nigeria prominent on the list. This is a country where a buffet is organized to commission projects, people with literally no financial power and popularity become billionaires in a span of four years. This article highlights the 3 dimensions of Nigerian politics and politicians 1ST DIMENSION After Winning First Election… The Induction At this stage, many are novices and rely on the counsel of godfathers to take charge of whatever position they’re elected into. They rule under the clutches of these godfathers who are quick to remind them of the reasons why they were put there. Settlements are given to those involved in the (s)election process; new contracts are awarded to on-going projects even as the old contractors are swept away to accommodate new ones, long-term plans which were set in motion by the previous administration is discarded while new ones are brought to life and new cabinet members are appointed to man the various ministries and establishments. The first six months in the eye of the average man is the foundation laying for a probable good first term but in reality these foundations are pits with imperceptible leaks to Swiss accounts. Everything is set in motion for years of looting. After 6 months, the once naïve politician who shook every hand during campaign and remonstrated acts of servitude, who reminded us of their lack of shoes when they were younger, who trekked the streets and spent hours under the scorching sun to proclaim their plans suddenly goes rogue. The craze that accompanies power possesses them as the initial zest dies and every plan grind to an abrupt halt while they try to reimburse every penny spent on their campaign. Any project started within this period say a 30km road will have just 8km of it finished even as the remaining is kept to be completed in the 2nd Dimension. And just like Nigeria’s Nollywood movies, everyone is kept in suspense. 2ND DIMENSION End of First Term… The Exam At this point they are well versed in the deceit and intrigues of which the political system is ensconced in and are able to navigate difficult terrains armed with speeches dripping with lies and enmeshed in rune that sound convincing enough to persuade even the most hardened electorate. The remaining 22km of road started in the first dimension is continued and rushed with substandard materials even as extra money is pumped into it never minding where the initial released fund ended up. Lots of commissioning takes place amidst parties thrown to celebrate what should be a normal activity. The monies spent on commissioning most times outshine the project. Much ado is made about irrelevant things. All these are carried out with elections a stone-throw away. The monies buried inside the crevices of the supposed foundation laid at the beginning of the tenure are invoked. The election is almost just a mere formality in states with only one party dominant and for states where strong oppositions exist the power of incumbency comes into play with the incumbent pulling all strings necessary. Pardon me to use biblical languages for effect and emphasis. Rejoice O ye Federal University goers, your time of salvation is here. Crieth not, for your victory is nigh. Twenty-five years ago, the Private University syndrome was non-existent. It was either you go to a Federal University or stay at home. The population in the federal universities was commensurate with the facilities available. I salivate every time I’m being told stories of food they ate then; chicken and the rest served in the cafeterias upon presentation of their coupon. Their bedspreads were changed weekly. Yes!! In Nigeria. Mum and Dad can confirm all these as they both finished in 1984. As time went on, the population applying for university admission increased as more people embraced university education. Private university system was first launched with the formation of Igbenedion University in 1999. This set a precedence as we have up to 50 private universities presently in the country and counting. The private university initiative is a brilliant idea which helped reduce the strain on federal universities. The learning condition and facilities, at least for the ones I know, is better and can in no way be compared to that of the Federal Universities. The universities are staffed mostly with professors who may have retired and Ph.D holders on sabbatical. The hands available are capable and the institution is strike-proof. Graduating as at when due is absolutely guaranteed. But I have a little problem with them. Good enough, I’m attending a Federal University and may be a little bias in my view as I’ve never stepped into any Private University prior to writing this but I’ve had the privilege of interviewing few of their students. It pricks me whenever I talk to a Private University attendee and the first thing they are fast to remind me is how expensive their school fee is. They say this not to complain but establish it in my head that we are not on the same level. They seem to exalt the school fees more than anything. I wouldn’t blame them but the poor mentality of Nigerians who are made to believe that the higher the cost of a product, the better the value. Try asking any of them how the school is and out of 2000 words spoken, 1888 of it will be about school fees. I find this uneasy and annoying. Ask about the academic performance and they’ll be fast to remind you about the numerous first- class products they have. I wouldn’t doubt the credibility of their results but I have always viewed Private Universities as first and foremost a business organization and secondly an academic institution. The business organization aspect naturally will be the driving point of the owners given how capitally intensive it is to run them. Therefore, everything required to maintain a business model is utilized to the bones. It includes selling their products and monitoring to check for conditions to improve profit and minimize losses. Their academic results is their means of advertising and telling the world they are doing well. You get my point. Graduating with a “Pass” is rare to find. How dare you pay half a million naira and not get a good result?? Woe upon you. I was lost for words when the student of a popular Private University which proclaims to the world that the use of phone is banned, perhaps not to corrupt the students, said he takes his phone to school and uses it. I laughed annoyingly at such stupid hypocrisy. What baffles me most is that those who say they wanna produce students with moral excellence actually have the most corrupt students i’ve seen. Don’t get me wrong here, environment never spoils a child. A child only expresses the evil he/she always had. You could read more on that here . When a school says it wants to curb immoral living and the likes, it makes me laugh. Only God can change a man. No school can. I stand to be corrected but most of the students who end up in Private Universities do so to avoid the rigors of entering Federal Universities as they may not have the mental ability to practice the “survival for the fittest” life found in Federal Universities. The Private Universities are very willing to accept them as more students translates to more cash. This is not to paint the Federal Universities as being saintly or free from the above. We all know the tons of vices found there because of the limitless freedom available, the dilapidated infrastructure borne from years of usage and the lecturers who don’t do the job as it’s meant to be. I really want and hope to eradicate the low self esteem which ravages the Federal University students at the sight/stories of their counterparts in the Private Universities. By the way, if you have the cash as a parent, send your kid abroad. Visit www.ayooluwa2. for hard-knuckled write-ups |

Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the world's most popular rifle, has died. He was 94. Viktor Chulkov, a spokesman for the government in Udmurt, where Kalashnikov lived, is quoted by RT as saying: “Today sad news has arrived that Mikhail Kalashnikov has died after a lengthy illness." He had been in hospital for more than a month with heart problems. The AK-47 — “Avtomat Kalashnikov” and the year it went into production — is favored by guerrillas, terrorists and the soldiers of many armies. An estimated 100 million guns are spread worldwide. At a lavish Kremlin ceremony on Kalashnikov's 90th birthday, then- President Dmitry Medvedev bestowed on him the highest state honour - the Hero of Russia gold star medal - and lauded him for creating “the national brand every Russian is proud of”. Kalashnikov, who was in his 20s when he created the weapon, died in his home city of Izhevsk, near the Ural Mountains, where his gun is still made. He once aspired to design farm equipment. But even though his most famous invention — the AK-47 assault rifle — sowed havoc instead of crops, he often said he felt personally untroubled by his contribution to bloodshed. "I sleep well. It's the politicians who are to blame for failing to come to an agreement and resorting to violence," he said in 2007. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/news/mikhail-kalashnikov-dead-at-94-ak47-inventor-had-been-in-hospital-for-a-month-9022861.html

President Goodluck Jonathan has weekend, said his government did not give the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, an ultimatum to resume work or be sacked. Fielding questions from newsmen at the expanded caucus meeting of the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party held at Government House, Yenagoa, the President said, the Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision of the Committee of Vice Chancellors. “We didn’t give them ultimatum; it was the Committee of Vice Chancellors that took that decision. The Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision.” Jonathan also said the strike embarked upon by the ASUU was no longer a trade dispute , but a subversive action. Jonathan He said, “What ASUU is doing is no longer trade union. I have intervened in other labour issues before now, once I invite them they respond and after the meeting they take decision and call off the strike. “At times we don’t even give them a long notice, unlike, in the case of ASUU that was given four days notice before the meeting. As you are meeting to resolve trade disputes, you expect the trade unions to get their officials ready. “What was expected having met with the highest authorities in the land for long hours, was for ASUU to immediately issue statement within 12 or latest 24 hours , to state their position whether they were accepting government’s offer or not. And if they are not accepting they should state the reason for that.” “But despite the fact that I had the longest meeting with ASUU in my political history, we did not start that meeting until around 2:00pm and the meeting ended the next day in the early hours. As far as the government of Nigeria was concerned, all the critical people that should be in a meeting were there, so what else do they want? “After that they didn’t meet until one week, despite the fact that you met with the highest authority. It was unfortunate one of them, Prof. Iyayi died. “The way ASUU has conducted the matter shows they are extreme and when Iyayi died, they now said the strike was now indefinite, our children have been at home for over five months.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/11/didnt-give-ASUU-ultimatum-jonathan/#sthash.ytyGoszS.dpuf |

The new national identity card can be used as Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card anywhere there is MasterCard logo in the world, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has said. NIMC’s Director of Technical Services, Mr Emmanuel Ogungbe, told Journalists on Thursday in Abuja that the commission had already signed an agreement with MasterCard. “As opposed to just being an ID card, the card is also a cash card. What that means is you can also use it the way you currently use your ATM card. *The old National Identity Card “So if you put money on the card, you can withdraw this money anywhere in the world. “Two, it’s also a travel card. What that means is that very soon, especially within the West African sub-region, you can travel passport-free as long as you have this card with you. “So this card has multi-purpose use and that is why we are calling it a general-multi-purpose card, it’s not just an ID card.” According to him, all that a holder of the card needs to do is to present it at the point of entry of any country where it will be swiped. He said the information about the person, similar to the ones on passport, would come out and the country would allow entry. Ogungbe said that the new card was error-proof and would enhance the security of the country. “We have a system called automated biometrics identification system in our data centre that checks information of newly registered people coming into the database against what we already have in the database. “If there is a hit, that means that person was registered before and of course this means we will deny new registration. “So, there is no way of beating that system for now; I’m very confident of that. That will ensure that you can only register once. “What the bad elements do is to hide in a way that you won’t be able to capture them. But we are saying with this (ID) we know who they are and we will be able to very easily locate them,’’ he said. According to him, if there is a crime and the police are able to lift finger prints from the crime scene and send to NIMC, the commission will be able to give the full details of the criminals. He also said that the card would reduce incidences of bank frauds as fraudsters would be easily detected and apprehended. “Talk about even fraud in the banks, where someone will obtain a loan in a particular bank, move on to the next bank without servicing the previous loan to obtain another loan; that will become a thing of the past. “Because once the bank takes your national identification number, it can see all your various transactions, all various businesses that you have with all the other banks.” He said that government had asked the commission to “register every single Nigerian and legal residents” but warned the aliens against any attempt to use the card to commit crimes. “If you are an alien and you think you can continue doing that and go scot- free, then the person’s time is numbered because very soon, we will get to him or her,” he said. In this conference, we have the future of the country. We have the capacity. We can drive knowledge economy with right policies. The students in the software competition here are entrepreneurs of the future. Your destiny lies in your hands” he said. For the ISPON President, Chris Uwaje, unless the workforce were retooled with local software, the challenge of the knowledge society may not be resolved. As the ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, enters the fourth month, there are strong indications that the Federal Government has commenced the implementation of the “No Work, No Pay” rule. Vanguard gathered from a reliable source at the National Universities Commission, NUC, that the government has passed a directive to the various universities governing councils to stop payment of salaries of the striking lecturers. The ASUU Zonal Chairman in Abuja, Mr Clement Chup confirmed this yesterday after a zonal conference of ASUU, University of Abuja chapter, which took place at the Gwagwalada campus to review the nationwide strike. He said his colleagues were yet to receive their September salaries. According to him, “we have resorted to other welfare strategies to cope with the effect of the strike, particularly to contain the various attempts by government to break the resolve of the union. The Federal Government has through the National Universities Commission, directed universities to stop the payment of our salaries effective September this year and since then our salaries have not been paid. “Part of the welfare strategy, involved distributing food items, giving out soft loans and cash advances to members.” He urged members of the public to ignore the rumour that the strike has been called off. He said: “Nigerians should disregard rumours making the rounds that the three months old strike has been called off”, adding that “the strike continues until the government demonstrates a positive inclination towards implementing the 2009 agreements and the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties.” |
