Azanor:Okay, I"ve gotten tweetdeck up and running. Thanks for the help. |
Can someone recommend an excellent twitter client for me in Ubuntu? I'm not really feeling this Gwibber, its a bit slow and I'm having authentication issues with it. |
N101:Thanks, but the 2 landline numbers are not working and the MTN number sent me to voice mail. Has anyone gone to Affordables or DSCL recently? How much is the HTC Desire and Desire S? |
Does anyone have the Phone Number of DSCL? I'm in Abuja and I want to find out their prices for Android Phones |
Does any one have the Phone Number of these DSCL guys or do they have a website. I'm in Abuja and I really need to get an android phone. Currently looking @ the HTC Desire or the Desire S (if it's not too expensive) |
Abeg who wan buy Nokia E5? If you don't buy it from me I won't be able to buy an android phone and partake of all this wonderfulness. Help a brother out! |
I'm seriously considering getting the HTC Desire next month. Anyone know where I can get it for less than 60K? |
@lynxnoon & Blackweaver I just started my system in Ubuntu with the modem connected and it worked automatically. I'm guessing that's what I should have done instead of starting up first before plugging the modem Anyways, thanks for the suggestions. |
Hey Guys! I need your help. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 and I chose to use the Gnome interface instead of Unity. I also use a Glo 3G Modem but I've not been able to get it to work in Ubuntu. It's like the OS doesn't even detect the modem. The light on the modem flashes but nothing shows up on the system. Can I get detailed instructions on how to make the modem work in Ubuntu? Thanks!! |
Vieira:Checking out Scott Baker now! Vieira:Wheel of Time is a MUST READ!! So is Mistborn Trilogy Akbar10:I think I might be able to get some of my books back this weekend from a friend that I gave them to. |
Nice Thread! It's good to see like minded Fantasy and Sci-Fi Novel fans here on Nairaland. It's places like this that I can say things like "I prefer reading sci fi and fantasy novels to watching the movies made from them" and not get mobbed or looked at as a weirdo. My Favorite Sci-fi and Fantast Authors (in no particular order, and the ones I can remember on short notice): Brandon Sanderson - My current best fantasy series (Mistborn) was written by this guy and I have yet to find a series that matches up to this. If you've not read Mistborn Trilogy, you haven't read fantasy, PERIOD. Also his new series, The Stormlight Archive is shaping up to be an epic or even greater calibre that The Wheel of Time. George R R Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire) Epice writing with brutal honesty. There are no heroes in this guys books, just people with different motives and points of view Stephen King - The Dark Tower Series Isaac Asimov - The Foundation Series Neil Gaiman - American Gods Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game Robert Jordan - The Wheel of Time (Spent 6 months of my life reading through books 1-10 of this series while struggling with final year project and exams) Anne Rice - The Vampire Chronicles J K Rowling - Harry Potter Series Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Peter V Brett - The Demon Series Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman - The Deathgate Cycle, The Dragonlance Series Frank Herbert - Dune Series Steven Erikson - Malazan Books of the Fallen (currently reading book 3 of this series, very complex stuff) Alan Dean Foster - Flinx Series Anthony Piers - Apprentice Adept Series, Incarnations of Immortality, Pornucopia Series R A Salvatore - All his novels relating to Drizzt J R Tolkien - The Lord of the Rings Plus a few other series based on big franchises like Star Wars, Halo, Warhammer, Starcraft, Warcraft, Diablo, Resident Evil, Gears of War, Star Trek Thats all I can recall for now. Used to have a large ebook library with all these book and more (over 2 Gb) but a recent hard drive crash has left me with almost nothing. |
Now reading: The Girl Who Played With Fire - Stieg Larsson and The Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks. Both on my phone with the help of Mobipocket Reader (.prc) and Albrite Reader (.ePub) |
For those of you interested in reading ebooks with ePub format on you Symbian phone or even on other dumb phones, you can download Albrite Reader (http://albite.vlexofree.com/reader). it works pretty well and I've been using it for about a week now with no hassles. for ebooks in other formats(pdf, html, word, ) I reccommend you download Mobipocket Reader Desktop and mobile clients (http://www.mobipocket.com/en/downloadsoft/productdetailsreader.asp). The desktop client can convert all the above formats (except ePub) to .prc format which is readable on the mobile app, plus the mobile client is quite friendly to use. it reopens the ebooks at where you stopped the last time and it supports bookmarking and font resizing. Just my own little contribution!! ![]() |
The Future of Windows Phone 7 - Impressive!! |
@engrhamid and aieromon Thanks guys! Ever dependable. |
Guys, is there Opera Mini 6 Handler yet? if so where can we go to get it? |
twinskenny:Na, Slot had theirs going for 80k |
texazzpete:Nice one! Abeg, can you reccomend a store I can get the Galaxy S for at that price, the ones I saw were all 80k and above. |
4real:HTC HD2 runs Windows Mobile and while that was ok a while back, Windows Mobile is fast losing relevance in todays smartphone race. As for windows phone 7, I can't move to that platform from symbian (or at least not yet). No multitasking (yet), Limited number of apps(though the numbers are growing), no file management system, how am I supposed to survive without all these features after using symbian for years. The most logical choice for now is Android, maybe this time next year, WP7 will be a more attractive choice. (not Blackberry and definately not the iPhone) |
I'm loving my Nokia E5. Symbian works well for me despite what all the naysayers believe. My only gripe is the small screen doesn't help with web browsing, so I'm going touchscreen for my next smartphone. I'm thinking HTC Desire (on account of Symbian now having an expiry date and Window Phone 7 not being mature enough as an OS for me) |
Hommies, I need ur advice. I just saw the HTC Desire for about 60K in computer village (if you know anywhere cheaper, let me know ) and I'd really like to get it, but the HTC Desire S just launched and it looks sweet. What should I do, buy the original Desire, wait for the Desire S to hit our shores and its price to drop or save some more dough and buy the Galaxy S? |
semid4lyfe:Thanks man! now downloading. will try it out. ![]() |
WackyJ1:Hey! have u gotten a working AED Downloader yet? |
It was live as @ 4 pm. Yesterday's event was a Nokia with Elop giving the speech. This one's by Microsoft though Elop came on stage to show solidarity. |

@texazzpete: I agree with u. I watched a few Windows Phone 7 reviews on youtube and the OS has a lot of potential. Combining with Nokia is about the best thing Microsoft could have done to increase interest in their mobile OS becos, by the time the first phone from this partnership shows up, most people would just see nokia on the box and want to buy it. Hopefully, by then Microsoft would have added the necessary upgrades to it's OS to make it more competitive. My only problem is that this will take a while to happen. Most likely, the first device won't be ready till the holiday season. |
after watching a couple of Windows Phone 7 videos, I have come to realize that the OS has some serious potential. It's speedy as hell and the UI is very simple and straightforward. I would have liked it if they had folders for applications instead of just a long list. and of course they are lacking many major features. However, if they can settle these problems with the next update (which is due sometime in march) then I believe that they have a very good chance of catching up to iOS and Android. But from the rumors I'm hearing, it looks like the update coming in march wont be a major one and we will have to wait till later in the year to see features like copy & paste and 3rd party multitasking. |
And more info on Microsoft and Nokia's partnership: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/13/live-from-an-evening-with-nokia-at-mwc-2011/ |
Maybe I'm paranoid, but this whole Nokia - Microsoft thing is begining to look like a conspiracy to me. First, board of directors elect a new president for Nokia who is a former employee of Microsoft. Later, the chairman of the board confesses that he was blackmailed by american shareholders into choosing Elop as the new CEO of Nokia. One of the first moves the new ceo makes is to downplay the significance of symbian as the major smartphone os from Nokia. Next thing we know, Nokia and Microsoft are now partners with Windows Phone 7 being the new smartphone os of choice for nokia. The even have prototypes of what the new Nokia-Microsoft phones will look like, which means they have been discussing this for quite a while. Meego which was meant to be the future for Nokia gets labelled as an experiment and the funniest part is Intel who was Nokia's partner in devloping this OS wasn't evena aware of the change (they were looking at meego as their tool to get a firm grip on the smartphone market) Just yesterday,Elop replaced the president of Nokia's US division with another ex-Microsoft employee. Looks to me like microsoft is making some covert moves to break nokia down from within and acquire it with minimim fuss. But then I could be wrong, and this could all just be a smart people doing their best to help two giants make it in today's smartphone market. |
