So this MTN Rave, which android phone is it anyways? Looks like one of those budget ZTE or Huawei android phones. And Etisalat already has the Gaga phone. Could this be the beginning of carrier branded smartphones in Nigeria? Next thing you know, they'll introduce 2 year contracts to go along with it. Azanor:Still waiting for an answer to this. |
Nice one Bola! just remember to make allowance for games that will run on medium spec'd systems like me. Time to go brush up my COD4 and CS skills. |
Hey!! Long time no see! Its good to see this thread alive and growing. I guess its safe to say the androids are taking over Naija! Anyways, not much has happened to my Desire S since I was last here. I've rooted, installed CyanogenMod 7, upgraded to CyanogenMod 7.1, went back to get a taste of HTC's Sense 3.0, ran away from that because its a battery and data hog (But it has really nice effects sha!) and now I'm back on CM7.1 I've not done much in terms of games, still struggling to finish Zenonia 3, Angry Birds Seasons and NFS Shift (work doesn't allow me too much free time) I finished Captain America, Asphalt 6, Angry Birds and N.O.V.A. I have installed Backstab HD and Modern Combat 3 but haven't had time to get the data files (plus I want to finish what I'm playing right now, 8GB can only hold so much). Where I have done much is in the area of reading. This was one of the major reasons I got a fully touch device with a moderately large screen ( 3.7 was still considered large a year ago). According to Kobo eReader app, I've read a total of 15,000 pages since I installed the app (and that isn't the only app I use for ebooks) Mostly Fantasy and Sci-Fi with bits and pieces of thriller and crime. I'm currently rereading The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan because I heard the final book is coming out this year I started in January during the strike and I'm currently on book 6. I also dabble into manga (Naruto, Soul Eater, AIKI, One Piece, Hajime No Ippo), Mango is my app of choice for that. I use Google Maps. A lot! My job involves a lot of legwork and I'm relatively new in Abj (about a year now) so I plan my routes and mark out destinations before before leaving the office. It has also saved me from unnecessary cab fares. 3G Watchdog for my data monitoring, Advance English Dictionary for dictionarying, DoubleTwist for Music(iRockFan), Documents to Go for Document Editing, Evernote for note taking and to-dos, K-9 Mail for mail, IBDb for Movie news, MX Video Player for movies on the go (I don't do alot of that, battery life is short enough as it is), the list is endless. CM7.1 has really helped my battery life, my only problem with it is that once in a while my data connection vanishes. If I didn't have another android phone user with the same network and data plan in my office I would have put the blame on GLO (Not that their services have been perfect of recent). When I notice this, switching Airplane Mode on and off again usually resolves the problem. So, my life is integrating nicely with my android phone, I don't feel any pressure from BB users (these days they feel pressure from me), most iPhone users are unrepentant fanboys so I don't even try to convert them and while I still have a soft spot for Nokia Smartphones (was recently considering an E6 as a partner device but I went cheap and bought a C3 instead), I've moved on from that ecosystem. In fact, the only pressure I feel these days is from all these angry people carrying Galaxy Notes and Galaxy Nexuses and all other 4.5" upward android phones! Making me feel like I'm carrying a toy in my hand, with all your plate sized phones. Met this dude the other day, he had 2 Galaxy Notes! TWO!! "For his 2 phone lines" he said. ![]() Anyways its all good, we all belong to the same family. Whether na 2.7" screen or 5.1" One question tho, I was using a friends iPad the other day and I discovered that he had access to the full iTunes Store. From songs and albums to movies and series and even books! I thought that wasn't possible before but I guess I was wrong . My question is this: Is there anything similar available for Android users in this part of the world. I know Amazon doesn't cover Naija yet and I'm not ready for any IP Kung Fu. Not that I always buy books and movies (We all know where we get our new stuff from ) But I want to know that such an option is available to me, just in case I decide to be a good somebody!(and with that long winded recital, I vanish into the ether!!) |
Am I the only one experiencing this, I just activated one of GLO's data plans on my Desire S and since then I've not been able to browse on it. it doesn't event show any connectivity signals on the phone (EDGE or 3G of HSDPA). When I was browsing without any data plan it worked quite well but since about Tuesday last week, no show. Funny thing about this is that a friend of mine with a GLO Modem has a similar problem, He doesn't get any network on when he plugs his modem in, but the GLO router at my office still works fine. |
4llerbuntu:Mehn! that hack is not for kiddies, forget what the thread heading says. Plus, seems there are still some things not working in the mod. Maybe later. What I really need now is an affordable case for my Desire S, something below 2k and locally available. Any Ideas? |
N101:Hey, did you get your case in Nigeria? for how much? lynxnoon:I recently switched back to sense ui because my experience with it was better than with CM7. But maybe I'll try my luck again with this stable release. I also recently got a Windows Mobile Phone ( 2 year old hand-me-down from my popsie, but I'm not complaining). Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 running WinMo 6.1. The hardware's not bad (except for the resistive screen) but the OS is just so sad. I'll play around with it for a while and see what kind of experience I can get out of it if I show it some love. |
lynxnoon:Is the case bulky? Can you upload some pics of what the case looks like? Also, how much did you pay in total? I don't have a means of making online payments yet so I'm kinda stuck. But I'm sure I'll work something out. |
marocguy:Forgot to update that information, I'm no longer in Enugu. I served there last year. As for recommendations, follow Lynxnoon's advice. @Lynxnoon: do you have a case/pouch for you phone? I tried getting one @ CV when I was in Lagos last but no luck. |
In my mind now i'm rocking Windows Phone 7
|
4llerbuntu:I like it because it's plain and fast. If I need extra pizzazz, I can add it on top. Still finding my way around. |
Yes!! Now running CyanogenMod7!! My very first Rom Flash *Now Popping Imaginary Champagne* Will post screenies as soon as possible, now I'm trying to reconfigure my google account and get my apps back. |
lynxnoon:Don't rush me, I'm trying to get into the mood and you're spoiling my concentration. *now meditating* Oh! BTW, what app do you use for screenshots? |
lynxnoon:There's a version available on XDA forums that looks like it might end up being official. It's done by NeoLojik and is based on the work by Superkid. All reactions to it so far are good and it's like they've been approved by the Cyanogen Team. you can visit the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1240177 |
Looks like CM7 is now officially supported for Desire S. I've downloaded all the necessary files, all that's left is to back up my current rom and spend a day meditating and summoning the liver for the crossover. |
lynxnoon:From what I've read about those roms, they all have one small issue or the other (relatively poor battery life, GPS not working, No auto brightness, wifi issues) Cyanogen Mod seems like the closest to stock Gingerbread (a la Nexus S) that why I'm choosing to wait for it to be officially supported on the Desire S. Till then I'll manage what I have. Yesterday while shopping for a case for my phone at Emab Plaza, Abuja (didn't find any) I saw this one dude with a HTC Sensation. The fone sweet die. The only problem, the screen was not working anymore (was showing static like a TV thats not tuned to any station). This was after less than a month of use. Seeing that sort of scared me, especially when the pple at the shop started saying things like it'll cost up to 40k to repair it. My phone is now telling me that a system update to 1.47.415.1 is available. Correct me if I'm wrong but won't installing this update reset everything that I've done thus far (S-Off and Rooting)? |
lynxnoon:Maybe I'll wait till its officially supported. |
Double N: lynxnoon:Thanks guys. ![]() Any idea on where I can get the Stock Gingerbread Rom. |
Azanor:Just Gingerbroke my device too. (Liver plenty today )What next? |
Ok, I've achieved S-Off on my HTC Desire S using Revolutionary (http://revolutionary.io/) in Ubuntu. (After 1 week prayer and fasting against the evil spirit that bricks phones) I've installed Clockwork Mod Recovery after S-Off and have created a nandroid backup of my phone (easy as pie) What next? Whats the best way to root? |
@all Tried to downgrade the HBOOT for my Desire S from 0.98.0002 to 0.98.0000 using the RUU posted here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173083&page=2 but I got an error message: error [140] Bootloader version error Any other suggestions on how to downgrade? |
@Double N, Lynxnoon, 4llerbuntu, leuelliot I just checked my HBOOT version and its 0.98.0002 and AlphaRevX supports only 0.98.0000. What do I do? ![]() |
@Lynxnoon and 4llerbuntu Thanks for the encouragement. My liver is growing everyday, maybe this coming week I'll try my luck with rooting my phone. In the mean time, I'm scouring the net looking for info on those tools u mentioned (AlpharevX and Gingerbreak). Some questions tho: 1. If I S-Off my phone, can I S-On back again? 2. Which app would you recommend for making a backup of my phone's current state just in case something goes wrong in the future? Thanks ![]() |
lynxnoon:Abeg, u go share some of those ur apps and games reach my side o. I just got my Desire S this week and I'm looking for how to take it to the next level. I don't want to root yet (i'm scared) but I want to explore the full extent or using Android un-rooted before I cross over. |
linkin8k:Don't mind the video, The browsing experience on the Desire S is relatively fluid and seamless. It will look unreal, most especially if ur coming from a platform like symbian or Blackberry. What I've noticed is that it drags a tiny bit while the page is loading but after that, ur ready to go. I browse mostly on Wifi (Glo 3G Router) and its quite fast. |
linkin8k:I paid 2000 extra. Paid to bank on Friday, went to pick up phone on Monday |
Posted from my Desire S, testing my typing efficiency. Not bad at all |
FINALLY!! Now rocking my HTC Desire S! Android is a dream come true. Thanks to everyone for all the help and advice. Now, what next? How do I get the best out of this machine? Oh! BTW, linkin8k:You can go ahead and order yours. I got mine the same way. Ordered on Friday, received today monday. |
So I ordered my HTC Desire S yesterday and am expecting delivery on Monday. Went to youtube to watch a bit of Gadget Porn to whet my appetite and came across this video of the Samsung Galaxy S II versus the HTC Desire S (Browsers) I felt sorry for my poor phone to be. That Galaxy S II is just a beast of a phone. http://youtu.be/xBu-60B9yzU |
I've got an E5 that I want to sell for 20k. Are u interested? |
all4naija:What other data and info? Is it not only ur twitter account details that it has access to? |
lynxnoon:Did you get it for that same price? |
