Nigerians in Nigeria and in diaspora, continue to excel in various endeavours through solo efforts, bringing accolades to the beleaguered country. This is in sharp contrast to the failure of public leadership and governance at home. The latest distinguished Nigerian is no other person than E C Osondu, who last night won the £10,000 2009 Caine Prize for African Writing, the 10th year of the prize. FORMER US Rep. William Jefferson presently standing trial in an Alexandria court for allegedly using his office to promote private bussiness described Nigeria’s former President Atiku Abubakar as ‘corrupt’, in secretly recorded tapes played out in a US court yesterday. Mr. Jefferson, who served nine terms in the USCongress before he lost his re-election bid last year, faces bribery, money laundering and other charges stemming from a 16-count indictment. Prosecutors in federal court in Alexandria say Mr. Jefferson took bribes in exchange for promoting telecommunications services and equipment to several West African nations. The name of Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former President Atiku Abubakar has been named in the scandal over the sum of $100,000 handed over to Jefferson intended for Atiku. We have understood that over the past one year, a lot of achievements have been recorded here in Lagos towards the proper implementation of Shari’ah. These include the establishment of the Independent Shari’ah Panels at Abesan Estate Central Mosque and 1004 Estate mosque, Victoria Island. It is indeed very encouraging to hear that judges and registrars run these courts on a voluntary basis, and that an increasing number of Muslim litigants are patronising the courts on their own.
