Politics / Man Of The Year 2014: Nigeria, A Nation In Search Of Heroes by babalobi(m): 6:15pm On Jan 01, 2015
By Babatope Babalobi

Who should be Nigeria's Man of the Year for 2014? Who does the cap best fit? Is it possible to reach a national consensus on this issue? More importantly is the concept of the Man of the Year still relevant or significant in Nigeria's political life or should it be wiped off from the nation's political lexicon?

Many people will argue that the concept of Man of the Year has been devalued in Nigeria. Just like the National Honours, this honorific title has become politicized, bastardized, and corrupted. In the past, it was not as if there was a national consensus on who deserves the title, as several media houses simply go ahead and bestow the title on, however, they feel deems fit, based on public opinions. In recent years, the givers of the title seem not to bother about public opinion any longer, rather opinion of various political caucuses seems to hold sway.

This situation is not helped by the fact that the nation is lacking in heroes. There is a glut of selfless leaders who have made sacrifices for public good. Gone are the days of the Tai Solarins and Gani Fawehinmis who seemed to have made a vow of sacrifice, integrity, and selflessness for the public good. Everyone now seems to be involved in a rat race to grab his own share of the national cake.

Nigeria has become a highly commercialized society where every activity is denominated and decimated by consideration of monetary and pecuniary benefits.

This scenario has stifled the emergence of national heroes, now replaced by 'Nigeria idols' whose distinctive ability is their sonorous voices and tingling dancing steps. There are no more Consciences of the Nation, our Conscience is not ruled by the pocket, rather than the heart as everyone seems to be concerned about the volume of naira load it its pocket. No one seems to be interested in carrying the national burden again. Individuality has given way to publicness, privatisation has murdered national interests, and selfishness has trampled down the public good.

Politics / Lessons From ‘osun Decides’ 2014 by babalobi(m): 12:02am On Aug 14, 2014
By Babatope Babalobi
The Osun State Governorship election 2014 has come and gone with a winner emerging and the loser in the typical Nigeria fashion heading for the tribunal to contest the results. But we must not lose sight of the several political lessons we could learnt from the results.

The incumbent All Progressive Congress (APC) Governor Rauf Aregbesola received 394,684 votes in contrast to defeat People Democratic Party (PDP) Iyiola Omisore’s 292,747 votes, a winning difference of 101, 937 votes. The lesson here for the winning party is that the opposition party is still strong in the State. As Aregbesola mounts the saddle for another four years, he should be magnanimous in victory and mindful of the fact that almost 300,000 people in the state voted against him.

Why did Governor Aregbesola receive his highest votes in Oshogbo, the State capital, scoring 39,948 – the highest votes cast for him out of all the 30 Local Governments in the State.? The fact that Oshogbo has the highest number of registered voters may not be sufficient explanation. A more credible explanation is that Oshogbo, the State capital witnessed gargantuan infrastructural transformation – roads beautification, parks etc in the last three and half years under the Aregbesola administration. The lesson here is that the common man though hungry and poor still appreciates good governance. This explains why Governor Aregbesola gained more votes in Oshogbo Local Government, than his home Local Governments – Ilesha East and West. The phenomenon of ‘stomach politics or infrastructure’ that gained prominence after the Ekiti election, seems to been overplayed and exaggerated.

Another curious lesson from the electoral results is that neither of the two leading candidates in the election – Aregbesola and Omisore had a commanding and dominating support from their home local governments. Incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola gained a total of 59,328 votes from the five local governments that made up his native Ijeshaland, comprising the following local governments -Ilesha West, Ilesha East, Oriade, Atakumosa East and Atakumosa West. Senator Omisore received 33,011 votes from these five Local Governments, a not too commanding difference of 26,317 in favour of Governor Aregbesola, the home boy.
In the same vein, Omisore received 66,776 votes from the four local governments that make up his immediate political constituency-Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North and Ife South. Aregbesola on the other hand, received 39,913 from these four local governments; a difference of 26,863 in favour of Omisore.

The fourth interestingly revelation of the August 9, 2014 Osun Governorship election result is that the decision of the Omisore camp to pick his running mate from Ede area, did not boost his electoral fortunes, as the APC still led in the total votes cast in Ede North and South -by 27,141 to PDP’s 17,889. Though former Osun state Governor Isiaka Adeleke who crossed over to the APC from PDP is claiming credit for the APC’s fortunes in Edeland, I am of the opinion that this is due more to fact that the office of a Deputy Governor is a ‘separate tyre’ and the electorates is more interested in who becomes Governor. In Nigeria’s democratic dispensation, the State Governors are tin-gods, and their Deputies glorified personal Assistants. As such picking a running mate from a particular zone may not necessarily translate into electoral fortunes.

Fifth, the religious card, which many thought would work against Rauf Aregbesola, probably worked in his favour. The incumbent Governor received his three highest votes from local governments with large muslin population – Oshogbo – 39,948 votes, Iwo – 21,093 votes, and Irewole (with Ikire as capital town) – 18,328 votes. Unlike Rauf Aregbesola who is a staunch Muslim with sympathies for Christians and traditionalists; Omisore belongs to the Catholic Church which is not as strong rooted in the South West compared with the status the church enjoys in Eastern Nigeria. It is also not a hidden fact, that Anglicans or Pentecostal Christian, who are the mainstream denominations in Osun are not tightly bound with Catholics. Coupled with this is the general apathy of the average Christian to politics compared to their political activism of their muslin counterparts. As such, Omisore could not receive block votes from the Christian community, while Aregebesola enjoy overwhelming support from the Muslim dominated towns of Ikire, Iwo, Ikirun, Ejigbo, Ede etc.

Sixth, Governor Aregbesola won popular votes across the local governments of Osun State. Apart from winning in 22 out of 30 local government, Aregbesola received his highest votes outside his Ijeshaland, his home base. He received his highest votes from Oshogbo -39,948, 2nd highest from Iwo - 21,093 votes, and 3rd highest in Irewole -18, 328 votes. In contrast, his leading opponent, Iyiola Omisore was more of a local champion; he secured his two highest votes casts within his Ife constituency – Ife Central – 24,555, Ife East – 20,868. It is also noteworthy, that Governor Aregbesola scored 10,000+ votes in 16 Local Government Areas, while Iyiola Omisore scored 10,000+ votes in 11 Local Government Areas.

The APC hues and cries of plans by the PDP to rig the election were beneficial as it put everyone on the alert and ensured vigilance. Also the heavy security presence that the party complained against was to its benefit, as electoral malpractices could have occurred with lesser security presence.

What is the explanation for former Governor Oyinlola’s loss of Odo-Otin Local Government in spite of the hype over his decampment to APC few days before the election? Oyinlola is probably a victim of power play by the PDP big wigs likely mobilized resources to ensure the former PDP National Secretary was disgraced and embarrassed in his home base, thereby parading him as irrelevant and paper weight. This is a conjecture, but there could be many other explanations.

Lastly, what would have PDP done better or right in order to win the August 9, 2014 Governorship election? First, it is herculean to defeat a performing incumbent Governor skilled in grassroots mobilization. Second, APC’s alarm about the opposition’s rigging plans, the neutrality and increased efficiently of the Independent Electoral Commission, coupled with the water tight security made rigging difficult, unattractive, and risky. Third, Omisore is a recycled PDP Governorship candidate whose political fortune have been witnessing diminishing returns over the years. If Iyiola Omisore had not been over ambitious and desperate to become a Governor as exemplify by his decision to run for the umpteenth time for the Governorship, a candidate with better electoral value would have emerged from the opposition party. The decision of the PDP to pick its Governorship candidate from the same senatorial district the incumbent Governor comes from is politically suicidal. PDP’s joker could have been a Muslim candidate with strong popularity rating within the Osun West - Central Senatorial axis. A strong candidate from another senatorial district could have benefitted from the bulk high votes of the Oshogbo – Iwo – Ikire – Ejigbo – Ede Ikirun axis and gave Governor Aregbesola a better run.

Religion / Tips For Church Growth: The Early Church by babalobi(m): 9:31am On Oct 30, 2013
Acts 2 vs. 42 – 47 - 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. 44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common; 45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. 46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

1. The early Christians were happy and excited to receive the word of God, but the present generation of Christians do not want to be rebuked with the word of God.

2. The early Christians were avid readers of the Bible, but contemporary Christians use the Bible to decorate their offices and cars instead of reading its contents.

3. The first generation of Christians were always in the presence of God to fellowship, by the present generation of Christians are too busy to seek God.

4. The early church was a communal church, but there is no love among members of the present church.

5. The early Christians have things in common, but everyone is on its own in the present generation, while every man of God also wishes to have his own empire where he is the Lord of the manor.

6. The early Christians never lacked because they supplied each others needs, but there is poverty in the present church because of selfishness of the members and greed of the Pastors/Church.

7. The early church was a prayerful church, but the present generation of Christians see prayer as an unnecessary burden.

8. The early Christians were God fearing, but the present generation of Christians fear job loss more than the God of heaven.

9. Miracles were a common occurrence in the early church, but the present church fake and manufacture miracles, and advertise it to attract new members.

10. The early Christians love one another, but the present generation of Christians do not help one another.

Religion / Sermon And Prayers: How To Become A Rich Man Overnight by babalobi(m): 1:59pm On Oct 22, 2013
John 21 vs. 3 – 6 – 3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. 6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.

1. Peter and his friends labored all night looking for fish, but they caught nothing.

2. Jesus stepped in, and on his instruction Peter and his friends threw the net into the sea again, and they caught a multitude of fishes, too much for them to pack.

3. If Jesus steps into your business, you can become rich overnight.

4. However, you must also first step into the Lord’s business of soul winning before Jesus can step into your business.

5. Do the work of an evangelist today, and you will become rich overnight with souls of men and even financial prosperity.

Prayer

· Holy Spirit make me a soul winner in Jesus name

Religion / Bible Sermon: Why Christians Are Poor by babalobi(m): 1:52pm On Oct 22, 2013
John 21 vs. 3 - Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.

1. There are some general causes of poverty such as poor education, low skills, natural disasters, poor political governance, laziness, and in some cases geographical location.

2. But they are also spiritual causes of prosperity, and Christians no matter where they are on the face of the earth are supposed to be shining examples of divine prosperity. However. The reverse is the often the case. Christians may be poor because of the following reasons:

· They have abandoned the work of God for the work of flesh, chasing after things of the world rather than things of the flesh.

· Like Peter, they have abandoned soul winning and evangelism. Fishing for money rather than fishing for souls first.

· They put their personal business first, the God second or last.

· They have forgotten that God is He that gives power to make wealth, not by power not might.

Prayer

· Holy Spirit deliver me from profitless hard work in Jesus name

· I receive the spirit of an evangelist in Jesus name

Which work are you supposed to do for God? Are you doing it? Start something for Christ today

Politics / Mrc Thumbs Down President Jonathan Over Ministerial Nominees by babalobi(m): 10:33pm On Jun 30, 2011
The Movement for Revolutionary Change (MRC) www.movementforrevolutionarychange.org has expressed great disappointment at the list of Ministerial nominees submitted to the senate for confirmation by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The 34 man ministerial list sent to the Senate for screening is by all means uninspiring, colourless, unimaginative, and disappointing. Almost none of the ministerial nominees have a positive intimidating record or inspiring credential. The President has failed to rise to the challenge of consisting a respectable Federal cabinet composed of credible political figures and reputable personalities.

Nigerians were anxiously expecting a ‘dream’ Federal cabinet, but by nominating stooges of various political godfathers, recycled politicians, godsons and daughters, and persons with no pedigree of excellence and distinction, the President has betrayed the high aspirations of Nigerians for change and the expectations of the millions of Nigerians that erroneously voted for him in the belief that he would be an agent of change.

This is not the cabinet Nigeria deserves. This is not the best Nigeria can offer. This is far from being a list of supposed ‘Honourable Ministers’. Even within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, we believe that men and women of better reputation could have been identified.

Religion / Should We Pray For The Death Of Our ‘enemies’? by babalobi(m): 3:10pm On Jun 16, 2011
This message is unusual and it is meant for people facing or experiencing unusual occurrences. This message is desperate and it is directed for someone in a desperate situation earnestly seeking spiritual intervention. This message is out of the ordinary and it is meant for someone that is facing evil attacks from the pit of hell and requires supernatural spiritual intervention.

This message is not meant for lazy Christians or bench warming Christians; neither is it meant for show biz Christians, who erroneously believe that Christianity is like the paparazzi.

This message is meant for Christians who are facing long term, chronic, endemic problems that have hitherto defied prayers, fasting and healing. The problems may be illness, bareness, joblessness, stagnation, and any manifestation of failures. But the peculiar characteristics of the problem are that it must have been long term, stubborn, and unyielding. Brethren, if the stubbornness of your problems has ever led you to silently ask in your mind whether God really exists, then this message is for you. However, if you erroneously believe that because you are born again and that Jesus had died for you, you will not have any problems in life, then this message is not for you. More so, if you foolishly believe that your present afflictions as a Christian are God ordained, then you may not read this message further.
