The Andrée Arctic expedition is one of those stories that barely makes it into mainstream history classes, but it's brutal.
Three Swedish explorers attempted to reach the North Pole by hydrogen balloon in 1897 — a wildly ambitious idea for the era, using tech that had basically no track record in extreme cold. They launched, and then... nothing. No radio contact (radio for expeditions barely existed yet), no rescue missions succeeded, no wreckage found. Sweden and the world moved on, assuming they were gone.
Then in 1930, a Norwegian ship called Bratvaag stumbled onto their final camp completely by accident. What they found was surreal — journals, undeveloped film, personal effects, preserved by the cold for over three decades. The film still developed. You can actually see the final days of the expedition play out in photographs the men themselves took.
