Politics / Russia To Support Nigeria In Resuscitating Ajaokuta Steel Mill by babile: 5:49pm On Jun 11, 2016
The Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Nikolay Udovichenko, said his country would support Nigeria in resuscitating the moribund Ajaokuta Steel Company to ensure rapid industrialisation of the country.

Besides, he said that Russia was to assist Nigeria to overcome its current challenges in other sectors of the economy, especially oil and gas.

Nikolay gave the assurance in his remarks at the 2016 Russia National Day celebration on Saturday in Abuja.

He said that a team of Russian engineers were ready to inject new technology into the steel mill to make it functional, adding that the country had remained a dependable ally to Nigeria.

He said that the relationship between both countries had always been cordial.

“Our relationship with Nigeria is based on mutual respect.

“On the security challenge, Nigeria can always count on Russia’s support.

“You can always be sure that we are with you in all your challenges,” the envoy said.

According to him, Russia is also ready to partner Nigeria in restoring new technology in the oil and gas.
“Russia also gives scholarships to many Nigerians annually to study in the country and will continue to support in the education sector.’’

The envoy, however, called on Nigeria’s businessmen to take advantage of the cordial relationship between the two countries to strengthen the trade relations between them.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the celebration was attended by members of the diplomatic and business communities and other top government functionaries.

The Nigerian Army says ground troops are making progress in the ongoing clearance operations across the North East as more Boko Haram hideouts are being cleared and scores of suspected terrorists killed.

This is contained in a statement issued on Thursday by acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman.

He said the latest successes were recorded by troops comprising elements of 7 Division, Armed Forces Special Forces Battalion and supported by aerial reconnaissance and surveillance by the Nigerian Air Force.

Usman said the insurgents’ enclaves in 13 villages in Bama and a village in Abadam Local Government Areas of Borno were cleared during the joint operations conducted between Wednesday and Thursday.

He added that 225 hostages were rescued in separate operations across the state while an undisclosed number of suspected terrorists were killed.

“Troops of 26 Battalion, 151 Task Force Battalion, 155 Task Force Battalion and some elements of 21 Brigade have carried out a joint clearance operations.

“The operations were aimed to destroy remnants of Boko Haram terrorists camps and enclaves in the early hours of today in several villages in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

“The villages include Kircha Goniye, Wujjah Alkelu, Kita Jiddum, Jameri, Geri Gana, Gere Kura and Jabe.

“Other villages cleared by the troops were Hasana Jere and Chachile and many others in Abadam Local Government Area,’’ the statement quoted him as saying.

Usman added that the rescued hostages comprised women and children who have been screened and transported to the various Internally Displaced Persons camps across the state.

He said troops recovered N466,000 cash, different cache of arms and ammunition, and other items in the last 48 hours of clearance operations in Borno alone.

According to Usman, troops of 22 Brigade Garrison, on blocking position, encountered a convoy of Boko Haram terrorists on motorcycles, killed one of them and recovered a bag containing the N466,000.

He added that troops of 111 Special Forces Battalion and the Civilian JTF have continued to secure the reopened Maiduguri-Damboa road to ease movement of motorists along the axis.

According to Usman, no fewer than 300 vehicles are escorted daily by the units on the Maiduguri-Damboa road.

He said the Nigerian Air Force has also continued to provide air reconnaissance and airlift of commanders to frontline troops across the North East.

“In particular, the F-7 Fleet conducted armed reconnaissance over Maiduguri, Karetu and ether locations, while the Mi 17 airlifted the Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division from Mubi to Bitta and back to Maiduguri.”

Usman said the acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Brig.-Gen. Victor Ezugwu has also visited troops in various theatres across the region.

“The acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division, Brig.-Gen. Victor Ezugwu has in addition, visited troops of the 28 Task Force Brigade and the Emir of Mubi.

“He also visited troops of 114 Task Force Battalion where he urged them to continue to uphold the uncommon courage and battle resilience which the Division was noted for.’’

Education / Police Arrest Four In Connection With Abduction, Murder Of Army Colonel by babile: 8:37am On Jun 09, 2016
After nearly three months of investigation, the leadership of the Nigeria Police has confirmed the arrest of four suspects responsible for the abduction and subsequent murder of a Colonel of the Nigeria Army in Kaduna.

On March 27, 2016, the Army had reported that one of their own, Colonel Samaila Inusa, was kidnapped and taken away by unknown gunmen in his Mercedes-Benz car around Kamazo, Kaduna Refinery Road, in Chikun Local government area of Kaduna State, two days later after the kidnap, he was found dead around Ajyaita village off Eastern Bypass Kaduna. Preliminary investigation showed the likelihood that the late senior officer was killed on the same day he was kidnapped by his abductors, as the body was found already decomposing.

A statement issued yesterday in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olabisi Kolawole, said the arrest of the suspects in Kaduna by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Kaduna State Command SIB operatives, following “discreet, sustained and painstaking intelligence” also led to the recovery of weapons in the possession of the suspects.

The arrested suspects — Ibrahim Kabiru, Ebele Precious, Emeka Okeke Cyprain and Chijioke Ugwuanyi — were apprehended in pairs, according to the police, after deploying available technical assets to track a Prison Warden Abdullahi Adamu, an associate of one of the arrested suspects, who was using the Techno handset stolen from the murdered Colonel.

The statement explains “sequel to the kidnapping and killing of the officer, the IGP IRT deployed the Technical and Human Intelligence assets of the Force, which led to the arrest of a Prison Warder named Abdullahi Adamu, who is a close associate of one of the prime suspects who was using the Tecno mobile phone stolen from the slain Colonel.

Further investigation led to the arrest of two (2) of the prime suspects, namely: Ibrahim Kabiru ‘m’, 23, (aka uztaz) and Ebele Precious ‘m’, 41 (aka pastor), while the gang leader, Emeka Okeke Cyprian ‘m’, 44, and one other member of the syndicate, Chijioke Ugwuanyi, ‘m’, 42 (aka CJ) were later arrested.”

The suspects, said to be a gang of notorious criminals with special skills in car snatching, truck hijacking and disposal of stolen vehicles in the state, were arrested with “one AK 47 rifle, two magnum pistols, one Nissan Pathfinder Jeep and documents of six (6) houses located in Anambra State of which Emeka Okeke Cyprian confessed were proceeds of his previous criminal activities”.

While commending the diligence and professionalism exhibited by the IRT and Operatives of the Kaduna State SIB detectives, IGP Solomon Arase sued for citizens’ support to the Police, saying such support to the Police key is to breakthrough achievements.

The Police said the arrested suspects are presently in custody of the Force will soon be arraigned before a competent court of law for criminal charges preferred against them while effort to arrest the fleeing members of the gang continues.

Politics / Herdsmen Reportedly Return To Nimbo Community, Threaten To Unleash More Terror by babile: 9:05pm On Jun 08, 2016
Just a month after some herdsmen carried out attacks on residents of Nimbo community in Enugu state killing several people, another set of herdsmen have reportedly arrived the community, threatening to carry out more attacks on the community members. The Sun reports that the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe John Ikemefuna Akoh, disclosed the recent development to members of the Nsukka General Assembly who paid him a courtesy call recently.

In his words:

“We are glad you people are here today to also share our present fear. For the past two days, our people have not been going to farm as Fulani herdsmen have taken over the entire farm in Nimbo community destroying farmlands and threatening to unleash more terror. Some of our people who saw them said they told them that they were back to unleash more terror with more sophisticated weapons. The herdsmen chased them away and ushered their cattle into the farm. Since then, many people have left the village because they are afraid that more disastrous attack would happen at any time. We have called the Divisional Police Officer in charge of this area and he said they did not have fuel in their vehicle,” the Igwe said.

A member of the group, Chief Nnia Nwodo immediately called the state's Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu, to inform him of the recent development. The commissioner then told the group that he will immediately order men of the Nsukka Police Command to move in and forestall any breakdown of law and order. Chairman of Nsukka General Assembly, Prof. Lawrence Ochor charged the youths in Nimbo community to mobilise and protect themselves.

"I urge the youths of Nimbo to mobilise themselves and protect their village from the menace of Fulani herdsmen. We cannot run away from our village, it is time full state of emergency is declared so as to avert another possible attack. We are confident that the administration of Governor Ugwuanyi is on top of this matter but, more effort is needed from everybody to rescue our state from the hands of Fulani herdsmen.”

The community, has however called on the state government to declare a state of emergency in the area so as to help avert the impending danger. Speaking through their spokesman, Apostle Dr. Akachukwu Clement, the community said their lives have been threatened following the return of Fulani herdsmen.

“No amount of security personnel can stop these people.”

Politics / 2,000 Chad Troops Head To Niger After Boko Haram Attack by babile: 6:00pm On Jun 08, 2016
Some 2,000 troops from regional military powerhouse Chad headed to neighbouring Niger on Wednesday, where Boko Haram insurgents inflicted heavy losses in the town of Bosso last week, a military source said.

Chad is a leading member of a multi-national force fighting the Nigeria-based Islamists who have extended their attacks to neighbouring countries from their base in northern Nigeria.

The “heavily armed” soldiers will “search everywhere for Boko Haram,” added the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The attacks began Friday against a military post in Bosso in Niger’s Diffa region, killing 26 soldiers including two from neighbouring Nigeria.

A total of 55 insurgents from the Nigeria-based Islamist group were killed and “many” injured, according to Niger authorities.

“An estimated 50,000 people or so fled,” UN refugee agency (UNHCR) spokesman Adrian Edwards told reporters on Tuesday.

Last year, Chad dispatched soldiers to Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon to fight Boko Haram. The regional multi-national force includes the four countries.

– UN voices ‘great concern’ –
Boko Haram’s seven-year insurgency has left at least 20,000 people dead in Nigeria and made more than 2.6 million homeless, leading to calls for more support within the region.

The UNHCR spokesman said most of those fleeing the violence in Bosso had walked to Toumour, some 30 kilometres (19 miles) to the west.

A local journalist working with Radio Anfani told AFP on Tuesday he was sheltering in Toumour with no food, along with many others who fled the violence.

“The Boko Haram gunmen stayed in Bosso from 6:30 pm (1730 GMT) on Friday to 3:00 am on Saturday, burning the military barracks, police facilities and local administration office before looting shops and carting away food supplies,” he said.

He said that the gunmen used heavy artillery which allowed them to overrun the town’s garrison.

“They came in large numbers shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is Greatest),” he said.

The journalist, who declined to be named, said that he subsequently learned that the fighters returned later on Sunday and “engaged troops redeployed to the town in fierce battle”.

The journalist claimed the militants had overrun the town but Niger’s defence minister Assoumana Malam Issa has said that the military had regained control.

Edwards said some of those displaced had moved on from Toumour and were heading to the town of Diffa, around 140 kilometres west of Bosso, and northwards towards a camp for internally displaced people that is already nearing its maximum capacity of 10,000.

“The welfare of these people and others forced to flee the violence in Bosso is of great concern,” he said.
