Celebrities / Music Review: Warri By Efe Feat Olamide. by babino22: 3:07pm On Jun 11, 2018
Music Review: Warri by Efe feat Olamide.
Efe’s story is just that of Jesus Christ; welcome the king of the Jews today and later they were all shouting crucify him. The difference is just that Jesus wasn’t guilty of anything but Efe is guilty. The kind of castigation Efe suffers seems to be as if these people were not the same that voted for him to win the N25million naira Big Brother Nigeria. What changed between when he emerges as winner and now? If you ask me, I will tell you that it’s wrong decision.

It is not compulsory to be a music artist; I have always argued that if you are not gifted or knowledgeable musically, then you have no business in singing. If precautions are not put in place, Efe may end up wasting his precious time and resources at the end of the day. This kind of singing may not take him far and may end up being referred to as one of those artists.

Fame and popularity won’t push listeners to applaud you even when your singing is trash and significantly below expectations. Efe should have consulted Genevieve and Omotola on how it is before invested in such project. They are in the right position to guide him.

Let’s do a music review: Warri by Efe feat Olamide. 4 talking points

1. Olamide struggles with English flow
There is this Yoruba adage that says it is the nearness of trees that make monkeys happy. In other words, if the distances between the trees are really far, then the monkeys won’t dare jumping from one tree to another. Olamide is used to flowing effortlessly when it comes to Yoruba raps. He’s rapping in Yoruba is just like Eminem rapping in English. But because the song in question is for Warri people, then the need to flow in the other tongue arises. Olamide was literarily rapping in 3 syllables and I quote:
“It’s a vibe
Its a jam
It’s a tune
dem de mad
It’s a boom
It’s a play etc…”
This is very unlike him when he flows in the mother tongue. It got to a point in the rap that he just had to force the Yoruba in the lyrics. A lot of people have actually criticized Olamide for not being flexible and may have issues collaborating with foreign artists.

2. Wrong choice of artist featured
Imagine if Efe had featured any of these artists (Korede Bello, Tiwa, Yemi Alade or Simi) to take the chorus, I am sure it will be much better. The purpose of featuring another artist in songs is to add varieties to it, most especially if the artist featured is into another genre of music. Efe and Olamide are the same but raps in different languages; this made the song one-way with nothing special.
Usually, the chorus of a rap song is what attract people at first before they start paying attention to the rap itself.

3. The Lyrics can be better
I really don’t know what inspire these music artists before they write songs. It is not necessary for a singer to compose the song; it can be contracted out to better writers. They do this very well in advance countries. A Nigerian musician prefers to pay ladies to get nude and dance in the videos than to pay a writer to put down something sensible.

Obviously, this song is clearly for Warri which is perfectly fine. The question is what happened to Warri people? The chorus makes no logical sense; “Warri, Warri Warri, dem go hear am na. old warri, area, new warri, area. Old money and new money, area”. Common, apart from the third verse where he was calling the various locations in Warri to say hello, the rest of the lyrics are just disjointed.

4. The Video interpretation
I will say that to an extent the video still mirrored the song. The video shows that Warri people are full of energy and the hustle is real. Even in their daily hustling to make a better life, they still find the reason to be happy.

Music/Radio / 5 Factors Affecting Nigerian Music Generally by babino22: 4:12pm On Jun 05, 2018
Have you noticed that when you sit in a smelling toilet for a while, it will get to a point where the smell seems not to be there again? Your nose no longer perceives the smell again such that you now feel comfortable. The smell didn’t go anywhere, it’s still right there but your nose is now accustomed to the smell. It is called sensory adaptation. It will take a significant higher concentration of pungent smell for your nose to perceive the smell again.

Sensory adaptation happens to all our sense organs and not only the nose. That is, eyes, ears, mouth and skin. A premiership league fanatic will believe the way football is being played in England is the best because that is what his eyes sees every weekend. His orientation will only change when a club from another league like Fc Barcelona defeat his club with 4 gaols to nothing.

I said all that to prove that when you are conditioned to listening to the same pattern of songs and watching the same kind of music videos over time, you tend to swallow it and conclude that maybe it’s just our own philosophy of music. Sensory adaptation just took place, requiring exposure and knowledge of other pattern of songs for you to know that you have been listening to crab all this time.

We are so used to listening to crappy music and watching inferior music videos. It didn’t just eventually happen but took place over time as a result of some factors that can be blamed on both the artists and even the general public.

Let us consider some 5 factors affecting Nigeria music generally.

Area Of Concentration (AOC)
You will almost not read any other topic again in your material if the course lecturer gives you some AOC to read for exam. You will read those AOCs as if your life depends on it. It may later turn to Area Of Confusion if none of the topics came out in the exams.

I don’t know about you, both I am so tired of hearing similar beats from our artists over and over again. Most Nigerian songs have similar pattern of beat. Notable reason is that, if Davido or Timaya releases a hit song that sells or trends well, watch as others begin to release similar beats of the song. Most of the beats in Tekno, Niniola and Timaya songs the same and it’s really tiring.

Artists concentrate on the beats of the song at the expense of the overall output. They make something fast and danceable. They are more specific than holistic. knowing what people want to see in the video, so they give you in reckless abandon ladies shaking their behind. To be fair to them, I think they are correct in that regard.

The Drive to sing
If you listen to most artist during interviews, they will tell you music has been part of them. You will hear things like they’ve been singing since I was 5 years old and all sorts. But their music composition and delivery is saying another thing entirely. The truth is this, most Nigerian artist rushed to music to escape poverty and hunger that is in the land. It’s an escape route. That’s why you will hear them mostly in their first 3 tracks talking about how they were suffering before and now they are making the money.

Because of their mission to escape poverty, they channel their style of music to what’s in vogue which is bringing the money and focus not about bringing out the creativity in them. In other words, survival and poverty is what drive most people into music and not the passion of music itself.

Meaningful Lyrics
Gone are those days when lyrics used to be the selling point; those were the good old days. Nowadays you hear something like ‘turkey to ketan, oya fun won legbegbe, omo shepeteri, soco soco’, it’s really a pity. Have you ever wondered why some old songs remain oldies and goodies while some recent songs are long forgotten? It’s because there is nothing meaningful to remember them for. We are left with only few ones now like Asa, Adekunle gold and Tu Face of old.

Acceptance
The success of any artist depends on the acceptability of the targeted audience. Ability to know what your audience like and working towards providing such need or want. Truth be told, you will have lower chances to succeed here in Nigeria if the majority of your songs are R&B. Coming back from work in a friend’s car and I thought I could play a cool music to calm the stress of the office. He wasn’t comfortable with it and told me to change it half way to something faster, I did that and he started dancing on the wheels.

It point fingers to why music artists focuses on high sounding beats and rhythm because they know it sells.

Knowledge and Experience
This is Nigeria, prior musical knowledge and experience doesn’t really matter before you start singing. You can always hit the studio to record a track once you feel inspired. The producer is also looking for money. Musical knowledge can never be underestimated if you really want to be an icon to be reckon with.

Small Doctor granted an interview of recent and he said he was a conductor before moving to music. There is nothing bad in that if he had gone straight to music school, but I’m sure Small Doctor has no time. Only few artists do live concerts without playing their songs underneath, all they do is miming and expression.

All these factors are the reasons why the western countries are still ahead of us musically. Even when they are singing about love, they make it sensible. There are always a good numbers of audiences for any genre of music the artist decides to sing. Larger percentage of them is not singing to survive or escape poverty. Most foreign artist are inspired before they sing and you could see the passion in them when they sing. I hope we get there someday.

Celebrities / Differences Between Ronaldo And Messi In Davido And Wizkid by babino22: 11:57pm On May 21, 2018
It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that we are all privileged to be in the era of Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo. Humanly speaking, I don’t think we can ever witness any football era between duo that is as fierce, intense and competitive as CR7 and Messi.

For over a decade, the two have dominated and swept away nearly all the footballing awards and leaving crumps for the rest. They have been breaking old records that seem impossible and have been setting new records that I will say are almost impossible for generations to come to break.

Come to think of it, the differences between Ronaldo and Messi can also be said of Davido and Wizkid, funny. The two are fantastic music artists that can be said that the fierce competition between them had pushed them to a level that other music artists will always aspire to attain. This is funny, but really there are these differences between Ronaldo and Messi in Davido and Wizkid. We will go through some facts between them that can be likened to the duo.

Rivalry

The healthy competition or rivalry between Davido and Wizkid for the past 8 years has really pushed them to attain a superb height in their careers with series of individual awards, foreign collaboration and record labels. The same can be said of CR7 and Messi, for the past 10 years they have being dominating the football world. Without the rivalry and competition, complacency would have set in long time ago.

Hard work vs. Talent

You will want to agree with me that Messi is a talented genius; if there is anything like that. He was born to play football, while Christiano Ronaldo is a meticulous, tireless and hardworking player. The same can be said of Davido and Wizkid. Naturally, Wizkid’s vocals are very pleasant to the ears which he usually garnishes with some Jamaican feel to make it more unique and melodious. But reverse is the case on the part of Davido. Omo Baba Olowo is being gifted with a frogy voice, like it’s always cracked that sometimes you want to think he is going through a whole lots of stress talking.

Just like CR&, Davido has really work so hard musically and has made his weak point his selling point. He sings effortlessly that we don’t even want to listen to any other voice if it’s not frogy.

Similar Attributes

The age difference between CR7 and Messi is 2 which is the same age difference between Davido and Wizkid
CR7 has 4 children, 1 above Messi who has 3. Wizkid has 3 children, 1 above Davido who has 2

Achievements

This is almost very difficult to quantify. It’s going to be a Herculean task to start counting or naming the numbers awards C. Ronaldo or Messi has together with the series of records they have broken and also set. Wizkid and Davido have a lot of awards in between them as well with still more to come. The last result shows that both of them have over 30 awards each and over 120 nominations individually.

Baby Mamarism

This list will never be complete without including the trending baby mama fever. As a matter of fact, Davido and Wizkid both edged C.Ronaldo and Messi when it comes to numbers. Wizkid has 3 sons with 3 different baby mamas while Davido has 2 daughters already coming from 2 different baby mamas. Let’s hope Chioma is really here to stay as she has being given some level of Assurance. If she gives birth to a girl, then Davido will have 3 girls and Wizkid 3 boys. Do the math, I can’t shout.

The Shouting and Bragging Side

Just the way CR7 brags and show off and say things like “I am the best player in history, in the good moments and in the bad ones.” He also said that he has never seen anyone better than him. This is just a replica of Davido’s attitude. He likes the media and will always show off his money, achievements and all. He claims he has 13 different presidents mobile numbers, he also said he has 30 billion in the account. Just when we thought we have heard it all from him, then Chioma happened. If Chioma cooks for him, he will show it, if Chioma feeds him, he will still let the country see it.

The trend still continues as it looks like this is Davido’s time just as Ronaldo is still the world best player. The news is all around him lately, from 45 million naira Porsche car birthday gift to Chioma, to Assurance video that hits one million views just 24 hours after release. The biggest of all is the 9.7 billion naira Bombardier Challenger 605 private jet he bought. Of a truth, I will say this is his season.

Celebrities / Falz Finds His ‘way’ As Wizkid ‘soco’: The Talking Points by babino22: 1:45am On May 14, 2018
The moment you become a superstar in the music industry, you tend to get away with some things which the up and coming artists wouldn’t dare or else they will get fried. You have lesser work to do in composing songs once you are on the spotlight in this part of the world. Just make sure your beats and the groove are on point and almost irresistible to the ears and the body, then you are good to go. Even if you now say “E no go better for you” in the lyrics, Nigerians will still dance to it. Lyrics don’t matter here.

Wizkid’s Soco

No doubt about it, Wizkid is a great music icon with powerful songs like ‘Ojuelegba, jaiyejaiye’ etc. He had also featured a lot of great artists in his songs and also mingles with these people. Of his latest songs comes Soco which we are going to analyse a little. It has topped various music charts and even the kids around will not let you rest as they sing soco.

Here is the thing; I believe the more famous you become, the more inspiring songs you should sing. When I first heard it over the radio, I thought he was saying Succour Succour, funny. As I type, I’m still checking the lyrics and its cracking my ribs. The intro says; one, all over you, holy water, throw the money, cunning money, oyaa hold the fire. Goodness me, what is he saying? The whole lyrics of the song are disjointed and almost impossible to find a meaning to the song as the title itself has no meaning.

When you Google the lyrics, all the first four results have different things to say about the intro of the song. I guess they are all confused. The chorus is the deal breaker, it has this to say; ‘oya soco soco, soco soco soco, soco soco baby o, soco soco soco soco so …’ I give up. There is no point going through the remaining 3 verses of the song again. In 10 years’ time I’m sure you won’t remember soco and call it oldies and goodies. By then, you will still prefer Asa 2007 Jailer track.

Falz feat Wande Coal: Way

Of a truth, both Falz and Wande Coal are right to say that academic intelligence and success doesn’t guarantee you financial breakthrough at least in this part of the Africa. I have not travelled out before. But I don’t think it should be encouraged. We still need more bright and intelligent people around to help us solve problems. Majority of those ones we produced 20 years ago had all left the country because of this kind of songs and mentality.

The song will make you reflect on those school days when you will read days and nights for exams while some super students would be flexing around. Wait for the results to be pasted, you will still see them blazing As and Bs. You couldn’t keep it to yourself so you told your friends about it. You went back home more confused than before because they told you “Eni to mo way l’omo we”

Back to the song, my honest opinion is that you should stick to the audio of the song, you will enjoy it more. There is nothing interesting or impressive about the video. You will only manage to see a lady at the beginning of the video facing the board, and at the end of the video tearing it. The rest of the video was interpreting another Falz’s imaginary song.

TV/Movies / “avengers: Infinity War” 4 Talking Points by babino22: 11:57pm On May 01, 2018
The much anticipated “Avengers: infinity war” hits the cinema on the 26th April 2018. The Marvel comic movie was rumored to cost about $300 million. The movie broke the ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ record as the biggest opening weekend of all time with $250 million. It took 10 years to bring all the Marvel characters into single movie except that we didn’t see the Ant Man. “Avenger: infinity war” 4 talking points

Almost too long
At a point in time we were just waiting for that final moment when the Avengers will come together and bring an end to Thanos and his mission of erasing half the population of the universe. And of course, there is no end. The more reason they called it infinity war. You might want to grab the biggest popcorn pack and try to sit at the back where you can stand to stretch your legs without obstructing anybody as the infinity war lasted approximately 2hours 30mins, just like our beloved Indian films.

Vision was annoying and looks too ordinary.

At first, Vision appeared just like human which is against what was showcased in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” with issues about the stone in his forehead. The most annoying thing is that he doesn’t appear to be as powerful superhero that was portray of him in the last summer. Vision was continuously under the protection of the Scarlet Witch. He was sliced twice by Thanos army and tormented while trying to remove the stone from him forehead before the Witch shows up again.

At the end he died horribly, in fact he had to die twice. The Scarlet Witch killed him in love just to destroy the stone but the mighty and no nonsense Thanos rewinds the time and pluck the stone out of his head socket. This time is was a horrible death; he died like a mere man.

Impact of Black Panther on Blacks

Nearly everybody at the cinema was in expectant of when the Black Panther and Wakanda will surface in the movie. The moment came when Captain America said Vision can only be treated in a place with advanced technology. Everybody in the cinema shouted Wakanda!!! And you could feel the happiness and see the smile on people’s faces. Wakanda is more popular the “Avengers: infinity war” itself. How I wish Wakanda was real. It’s believed that the last stone Thanos seeks after is somewhere in Wakanda.

Don’t be upset about the ending

If a movie should end like that then evil will always prevail. Tragic emotions were everywhere as we watch more than half of the avengers and population vanish away. How come Thor’s hammer that cut Thanos’ heart into two still didn’t kill him claiming he should have reached for the head? Thanos smiled at the end as he watches his dream coming true. Then all of a sudden the screen went blank followed with the casts. The final part is scheduled to be released next year. But you know films like this are not really meant to finish. There will always be a Thanos somewhere.

Remove that your number 1, go and ask those successful business owners if they are working according to their business plans. Most of the times the wind of change will just change the plans for you and you get to take immediate decisions out of your business plans. Business plans most times is just to get investors or together loans or sponsors most of the times.

The question did not say list 'old school' Nigerian music legends, rather it says 'contemporary (modern)' Nigerian music legends.
There is big difference btw both. People like Onyeka onwendu, fela, sunny ade e.t.c are not contemporary Nigerian musicians.

I will give it to Asa because at least she knows what music is and she had made significant impact in the last 2 decades.
I will just sneak Tuface because he hasn't been singing real thought provoking songs in recent years.
The likes of dbanj, olumide, wizkid, David are no legend at all. Some of them don't even know musical notes. They just sing like that. And to crown it all, there songs really has no sensible meanings. You can't be singing about ass and boobs and tell me you are on your way becoming legend except if the meaning as changed.
