Like I said to the person above, you clearly don’t know what it means to be a somebody. Your problem is you think being a somebody is about finances. Every village, every street, every church, every what not in Nigeria , you are a somebody. Whether you are the hungry Mai guard, the Uber driver, the bank manager the struggling teacher, the doctor or the governor. As a Nigerian abroad, you are a nobody. This is not about your bank account or whether you can pay your bills.

Everybody is Nigeria is a somebody in his circle or society. Abroad you are a nobod seey. You won’t understand this because most of you have never lived abroad.

Have you lived abroad? I have, so I can talk. Have you? Or is your opinion of life abroad based on movies and perceptions? If you have not then you are no position to make the comment in bold.

You need to understand something about life. There is more to life than finances, secondly once you solve your financial problems, other things become important, things 90% of Nigerians abroad will never get. Status, a sense of belonging, purpose, peace of mind. These things cannot be explained to people who have never lived abroad. Living abroad is like marriage. I wan marry I wan marry, it is only after you marry that many truly understand that wedding is the party and marraige is hardwork.

Finally, I never said don’t go abroad, I said, if you stay too long, diminishing returns will set in and you will hit a ceiling and become a slave to the system and those you left behind will eventually rise above and surpass you both in the finances that drove you abroad and status.

How many Nigerians abroad ever become anybody abroad? Less than .001%. How many Nigerians abroad rise to become company directors, asenior management or heads of the organisations they work for? Very few!!! How many Nigerians abroad know somebody in any position of authority, in Nigeria even the agbero or gateman knows somebody who knows somebody who knows the president.

that is the advantage of being “at home” that you lose when you overstay abroad, you become a nobody. And eventually once you are financially able to overcome the financial hardships that drove you from Nigeria, you will understand that being a somebody in society matters. Being a somebody does not mean being rich or being powerful. It just means you matter. You will never matter abroad unless you break into the very top and like I said, less than 1 of 10,000 Nigerians abroad will matter abroad, whereas by default no matter your status financially or otherwise, in Nigeria you matter. Worse still, you will raise children that have no identity, they won’t fit in abroad and they won’t fit in back home.

The system makes it easier to get what you want without the stress of saving huge sum and you can actually borrow that amount from a bank if you have good credit score and you can pay back in ridiculous bits every month.

See, there are many things one will never understand until you get into the system but whatever you do... DON'T EVER COMPARE SOUTH AFRICA LET ALONE UK with NIGERIA.

In Nigeria there is no job or biz security so you can be making 2m a month and you can wake up tomorrow and find yourself jobless.

Asides from politicians, thieves, yahoo boys and perhaps fortunate few, Nigeria is just a game of chance for the rest citizens

1). Most of them spend all they earn on mortgage, rent, food, transport, car loan, credit card bills etc.

2). 99% of them will never be able to save $95,000 after 20 years. I can tell you for a fact that 90% of Nigerians in the UK don’t have £20,000 in cash to their name. Most who have net worth have their net worth in their homes because they have been paying mortgage and built equity over time. People say your home is an asset…is it? To get any money from the home you either sell it or you take a loan, so really it is just a psychological asset that in all probability you will never enjoy as it is your children that will inherit it. If you sell it you have to buy another home, or you go from homeowner to tenant. if you take a loan on it or remortgage, you have new debt o. So even Nigerians that have equity in their homes are stuck. 90% of Nigerians in the Uk cannot raise £10,000 without a bank loan or credit card. The system gives with one hand and takes it all with the other.

3. Finally someone on level 16 in Nigeria is likely close to or above 50 yrs old. How can someone who has achieved that status in Nigeria go to the uk to become a security guard? What is the sense in that?

There is nothing wrong in all you have said really

Taking advantage of credit to build your life and enjoy high quality of living is not a bad thing

For those working and earning 2M and above, it no longer makes sense.

Some people who were earning large in Naija 10-12 yrs ago, like the oil boys have seen their Naira earnings increase but the real value decreased geometrically.

Imagine if you were earning 1.65M per annum in 2011, that was $10,000, but today even if you got promoted 3 times and are now earning say 4M/year, that is now $ 3,333. You have essentially lost 70% of your earnings. Same is happening to pensions. By the time you retire, your pension contributions would be worthless.

Ok, if you were earning 700,000 a month in May 28th that was $1,000, but in 4 months that is $583.

Funny enough, if there is a free flight to UK this week, Nigeria will almost be empty.

People are going through hell in their own country, they would prefer a place they can earn even if it takes them to work assiduously.

Seeing an old man gathering woods and sands from flood just to feed tells you how worst things are presently.

At times I said I'm broke, but received some SOS messages from married people who just need to put food on the table for the night even though the next day wasn't sure. I have to empty my account most times for those in dire need. Someone close to me committed suicide despite the little help we could gather for him financially.

Nigeria , Nigeria, Nigeria my dear country, you will one day be healed from this mess you are.
We still trust for a better day someday.
