In this interview with Lanre Odukoya and Adedayo Adejobi, Senator Iyiola Omisore, former deputy governor of Osun State and gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of PDP, speaks on several issues including the Bola Ige murder, defection of PDP stalwarts to APC, and his ambition to govern Osun State Few weeks ago marked the 12th anniversary of Bola Ige murder. Up till now, there are no clues as to who killed Bola Ige, although you were fingered initially. Looking back, would you say that so much have changed in the areas of due process, law and justice under this democratic dispensation? The issue is that, you know, in prosecution, if there is any death, they should allow the police to do their job. But when you now turn a particular legal issue to a political issue, you have beclouded the outcome of the investigation. Those people who master-minded that thing must have been those who roped us in so that the real culprits could escape. The police weren’t allowed to do their work, instead they were overshadowed by political sentiments, and blocking Nigerians from seeing the truth, covering up all these tracks and making it seem as if there was no security in this country. We know the government tainted the investigations, because when the guy from Scotland yard was leaving, he gave us his card and said if anything happens, we should call him as he noticed the Nigerian police were trying to influence him to lie against us. So, these amongst many others were the problems we encountered during the trial. But the moment politics was taken into it, people were now overthrown by sentiments. You becloud the investigation process and you damage the evidence. When Chief Bola Ige died, Tempo magazine through its reporter, Idowu Akinrosoye, released an issue (edition), for someone who had spoken about Bola Ige, when we got and played the midget, it was different from what happened. We realised that, the publication came after Chief Bola Ige’s death just to confuse the public. Their confusion of the process led to the death of Tempo magazine as the publication could not stand up to the challenge of their reporter. So, in retrospect, very little has changed in the areas of due process, law and justice under the democratic dispensation. It is however a very sad thing. Being a man whose name was mentioned in the Ige murder case, how did you handle the dramatic incidents that followed? I am a firm believer in the Almighty God. With my background, I am aware that there are ups and down in life. One of my critical times was when Late Chief Bola Ige died and we were roped into Chief Bola Ige’s death deliberately. And at the opening speech of my defence, I said that I saw politics as a way of changing lives. I never knew that people could become this desperate, because that really exposed me to the dirtiness of politics. In the course of our trial, we had two police reports, two different reports where the Police head said that Omisore did not have any link with Bola Ige’s death. The government then said we should be charged for murder and put behind the bars. So, that alone demoralised me. But the judge said that we were discharged and acquitted, that we had no business in court at all. There was no police report they wrote that linked us with that incident at all. But because they were the government, they just used their pen to put us behind bars and had us appear in court, so as to achieve victory in elections, which they lost woefully. And after the elections, the governor now called the people that look, go and leave these boys alone. Because I believe in God, I knew we were going to overcome because truth will always find its way out. I can say unequivocally that I had no hand in Bola Ige’s death. Since 2005 when you almost had a face- off in Lagos with Festus Keyamo, who played a critical role in the Ige trial, has anything changed between both of you? Festus Keyamo has to apologise to Nigerians for confusing everybody. You need to see the drama between Festus and Lucky, his younger brother in court. They schemed the whole thing. How they came about the frame-up, wore cassock for Fryo and gave him hymn book, telling him to call it Bible. Lucky and his brother almost fought in court. Nigerians need to get a copy of the judgment to see what happened. Festus Keyamo cannot look me in the face because he’s shameless, a noise maker, and a careless human being. And God almighty will punish whoever deceived the public. You know God is the God of vengeance, so I will give all vengeance to him to take. It is only natural to get angry over such a nasty court arrangement, but God will take vengeance at the appropriate time. Away from the Bola Ige murder, following the defection of some of your party stalwarts, including five governors to the opposition party, there seems to be fears in PDP over their defection. Does this portend a threat to Osun State PDP? There is no problem with Osun People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the rancor starts and ends in Abuja. Osun PDP is the most peaceful PDP state in this country. Even our former Governor, Oyinlola, who upon media blitz, was presumed to have defected to the opposition party, recanted that he was mis-quoted. We are one family, united, focused and ready to take over the reins of power by 2014.The government of the day is not doing well. Education has gone comatose, health has somersaulted, commerce is down the drain, agriculture is dead, no water and good roads. No health centres or hospitals have been added to the ones before. The quality of success rates in NECO and JAMB exams results from Osun State has dropped drastically. In 2009 we came fifth in NECO, UTME fourth, and last year we came 36th and 37th respectively. Education in Osun State is crumbling. People are wailing and asking questions as to whether these are evidences of good governance. Besides, what is the meaning of APC? It’s a party of angry politicians, a party of desperate politicians, who want to grab power at all cost, by all means, anyway and manner. So the people have seen through the veil. Initially, when (Justice Ayo) Salami brought them, they (people) were being deceived. But now we have seen that these people are just noise makers, no performance at all at any level. What do you expect from someone who stole and forged police report? Anyway, I’m not surprised. Somebody who impersonated, who claims to be an engineer, and he’s not one. He was engineer in Lagos state for eight years, but when he was taken to court in Osun State, he dropped the title quickly. He became Mr. Aregbesola. What kind of leadership is that? In a civil society, he’s supposed to have resigned by himself, but everything in this country goes. You know, there’s nothing like defection in my state anyway. And when we look at the national level, all these things like defection are just illusion. They are things that will just fade away with time. They are now asking them to leave their seats, they’re afraid to lose their seats. So I don’t see any threat to PDP at all. Won’t you say that PDP is reprobating and approbating? I mean, you know there were instances when PDP members also defected, you know? The likes of Obanikoro, Yuguda, and the rest of them, but PDP didn’t do anything about it? The law being applied was done in 2011. So that’s the problem some people made. We did an electoral law, I mean constitutional amendment in 2010. National Assembly said that you cannot defect from your party or else you lose your seat. In the former constitution, there was no punctuation in that law. Because of this careless defection, that was what in their wisdom made us omit the law we did that time. Some people do not understand that the law has changed. The revised constitution has provided for you, strict adherence to ideologies, so that is why amended constitution states that when you defect to another party, you lose your seat. Except for Ondo State, the APC tentacles are spreading across the Southwest and other parts of Nigeria. One begins to wonder if it will not continue, although we might think people are more enlightened than before, but there are powers that play on people’s emotions. In what practical terms do you plan to remove your people from what you seemingly call a quagmire and an illusion? APC are expert riggers. You can see how Osun State people, sent by Aregbesola, were arrested in Anambra State. He sent our people there led by his Special Adviser, co-ordinated by Osun state representative to rig the election. You can see that many people were sent to Ondo State, during the Ondo State governorship election. So their only area is rigging and we are going to prevent and resist rigging by all means. I’ve told them that they should be ready for anti-rigging. If they don’t rig today in any state, they won’t win in the South west. The problem is rigging, that’s all. So our own practical term is to ensure that people are enlightened, they ask questions, and they ensure that they do not allow these people to rig. You are criticising the incumbent, what about on-going infrastructure development in the form of road constructions in Osun State? There is no one. We can only see drawings. This is the fourth year in government and no concrete achievements. For the first two years, he had no commissioners and advisers. These are deceptive ways of politics and the citizens have become wiser beyond his understanding. There is no single project commissioned in my state today and the game plan is to deceive people into the next election. Our people are more informed now. The problem we have is that APC government chiefly thrives on propaganda. How can you explain a proposed project in Osun State, supposedly Gbongan junction to Akoda, being shown on Lagos Television and Television Continental? No ongoing construction, just engineering impressions. Just last month, they started a work that would take about four years, and this is a Federal Government road awarded two years ago at a price of N18billion, now re-awarded by Aregbesola government to the tune of N42 billion. There is no single project that has been completed in Osun state since his assumption ofoffice, not one. People are wiser and have seen beyond the veil of deception. Having taken a swipe at APC-led government in Osun State. How different are you, as it is common knowledge that all politicians are the same? If you look at APC, there is no alliance with the youth, workers, aged and the working class. For instance, the GDP in my state has dropped drastically. Why? Because the average market woman, bricklayer and cement seller comes from Lagos. The state is at its lowest ebb of economic activities. Where in the world does the government compete with cloth sellers because they provide school uniforms for students? It has become a competing government because it wants to steal money. The market cost price for school uniforms is N400, but Aregbesola is selling at N2400. Some students attempted buying from the local market; he sued them to court and jailed them. As for his rising debt profile, he has borrowed over N413billion. Because of the low intellegentia in Osun State, you cannot differentiate between Osun and Lagos State. You can have cluster of students in Agege before of its population, but you cannot have a clustered system of education in Surulere. On the flipside, Osun State is a scattered development, as there are rural communities everywhere. To this end, he is trying to force the Lagos idea on Osun people, and so students now have to trek 10-15km to school, all in the name of putting up mega schools. And UNESCO says that no child must trek more than a kilometer because you will end up having touts, thugs and drop-outs. He awarded the Opon Imo contract worth N8.6 billion to Kabiru, his son. Opon Imo was supposed to supply 150,000 tablets. Today, they have only 1,200 tablets in the state. The next line is that they want to have factory of Opon Imo now. On the cost of initial school blocks by quantity surveying valued at N159million, he re-awarded same at N879m. So he is taking N510billion on a school. By the time he builds fifty schools, he would have taken over N66 billion. And so, the driving force behind his administration is where can we get money to steal? On the other hand, even the roads that are being damaged and re-done now for pecuniary gains, are federal government and not state roads. These roads have been formally awarded; he went to Abuja begging so that they could be re-awarded to him. And Abuja gave him the unit cost rate, but he is executing the project at ten-times the unit cost rate. And of course, you can’t expect more from a man who (allegedly) forged police reports to the court. He has a criminal case pending in court. He simply enjoys immunity today, because he is the governor. The moment he leaves this October, he will resume his case for forging police reports. We are just unfortunate Justice Salami imposed him on us. We have call logs that show that on Aregbesola’s judgment day, Salami spoke to Tinubu 15 times, and he admitted. Why do you want to be governor of Osun State? It is just a call to service. I have new offers for the state. I am unperturbed by the opposition disparaging my governorship ambition, as their remarks never bother me. As a matter of fact, you would agree with me that it has become a part of our political culture to drag other people down, especially when they seem to have upper hands. I must say they see that mediocrity in governance is no longer acceptable, and so my courage and daring to do the right thing in our society, especially in this clime, obviously made me go for the plum job. It is shame on them because we must continue to do what is right and good for our people. The good people of Osun are now wiser. They are not fools to the lofty ideas on paper, of which none of them were executed. The dreams and aspirations of the people have more or less been sacrificed on the altar of selfishness and personal comfort of those in charge of affairs in the state at the expense of the common good. Evidence of non-achievement is glaring. My emergence is indeed a product of years of meticulous planning and patience. I have something better to offer the people of my state. Nigeria recently experienced a season of vituperative letters. What is your position on the tantrums that flew around? The issue of letters by President Obasanjo and President Jonathan is complex. You know at that level of presidential letters, I can’t comment on that, you know it’s above me. But you are a PDP stalwart? It doesn’t matter to me. By my upbringing and discipline, I can’t be commenting at the level of what other people are doing. They know more than I do. So, at the end of the day Nigerians just comment ignorantly in their rooms, quote what you don’t know. I don’t want to claim what I don’t know. Otherwise, you will just be rubbing on the wrong shoulders unnecessarily. So, I try to talk on what I know. That’s my way of life. How exactly did you become a politician? Was it a conscious effort, or have you always known through the years that you would be one? I was a student union activist. Besides, my family is a family of politicians. My father was the first secretary of UPN in the old Oyo State, so it’s a political class lineage. When the Action Group was founded, my grandfather was one of the seven members who founded the Group in 1936, in Nigeria and England. Although I never knew I would go into politics until I grew up and I saw that there’re a lot of things that could be changed. And being a professional engineer, my encounter with people, they believe that politics is for drop-outs. You know, maybe because most of them are not well grounded or well trained, or maybe of course, sometimes you have certificate forgers in politics. So I came into politics with a view to correcting these perception deficiencies, because I believed I could make a difference with my professional experience alongside my academic attainment. |
Supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC and its main challenger in the August 9 governorship election in Osun state, the Peoples Democratic Party PDP Monday clashed in Gbodo and Ita Akogun area, both in Ile-Ife. Unconfirmed report claimed that one person was feared dead while several others received various degrees of injuries while properties whose value are yet to be determined are destroyed. The Peoples Democratic Party wishes to bring to the attention of the public ongoing attacks on members of the People’s Democratic Party and their properties in the ancient town of ILe Ife ,Osun state. The PDP alleged that it was APC that started “the coordinated attack on PDP members immediately after a purported rally of the APC addressed and coordinated by an Honorable member”. But this allegation was immediately countered by the APC who also accused the PDP of causing crises in different parts of the state in its efforts to win the forth coming governorship election in the state . Specifically, the PDP in a statement by the Director of Media and Strategy to Senator Iyiola Omisore, prince Diran Odeyemi alleged that “more than six vehicles belonging to innocent PDP members have been destroyed, countless numbers of shops razed and looted and several members of our party beaten and matcheted”. ” We have implored our members to remain law abiding while we have notified the police and other security agencies of this unwarranted attacks on innocent PDP members who are going about their lawful business” . “We condemned in the strongest possible language repeated coordinated attacks on our supporters by the APC. Today’s attack will be the seventh since the commencement of this campaign and our party has lost men and millions of properties in return”. “We have refused to retaliate but we call on security agencies to deal firmly with the culprits who are known by their repeated incitement of people to violence . ” The security agencies have sufficient information on the activities of political thugs financed with state fund and openly supported by the state government. It is time to act against these hoodlums who want to turn our peaceful state into a battle ground” . “For us in PDP ,we remain committed to peaceful election because we have the trust and confidence in the capacity of our people to vote rightly Nd wisely against violent leaders masquerading as omoluabis”. But APC in its own statement by its Director Publicity, Research and Strategy Mr Kunle Oyatomi read in part “it is a pity that the PDP is looking for power that it can’t give itself. We have nothing to fear in Ile Ife. And this was demonstrated at our maiden mega rally right at the centre of the ancient town. “People came in their thousands and show support and solidarity in a manner that any first timer in Ile Ife would readily believe and truly so, that Aregbesola has no competitor in the State”. “Before Omisore stepped into the arena, Osun has been peaceful under Aregbesola. But a potentially treat to violence surfaced with Omisore over interest in becoming governor. “The question all intelligent people should ask themselves is how can a government of APC that is conscious of critical relationship between peace and development turn round to create violence to stall the very same socio and environmental development it has brought about in Osun? “In whose interest therefore is violence necessary in Osun if not the PDP? Accusing the APC of violence is PDP’s antics to divert attention from its own criminality”, he added. |

By Wale Aribisala Although the Ekiti governorship election of June 21 was celebrated nationally and internationally, the All Progressives Congress (APC) acted true to type in its refusal to accept defeat. While the US government hailed the election as a landmark, Mr Babatunde Fashola of Lagos called the intelligence of the Ekiti people to question, saying the PDP induced the people with money. Beyond media propaganda, Fashola is just another unskilled actor in the political arena, bereft of the enduring philosophy for which true progressives (the Bola Iges, the Jakandes) are known. It was however the leader of the imaginary State of Osun, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, that acted the lead role in the APC’s comedy of errors. Speaking in Ikirun, penultimate Tuesday, the new political analyst claimed that the poll, in which the APC candidate and governor of the state, Kayode Fayemi, lost scandalously even in his own local government area, was rigged. Aregbesola’s lullaby: “We have not seen the mystery of what they did in Ekiti. They rigged the poll there. But we are looking at them. What they did in Ekiti is not possible in Osun and we are going to resist it at all costs.” There goes the binary dichotomy (we versus they; saint versus sinner, light versus darkness) for which the APC has acquired an indelible notoriety in Nigerian politics. The governor then inadvertently predicted his own fall: “They are day dreaming. Osun is like a wood or tree swarmed by ants, you cannot hold it.” Any tree which dares the ants and other miniature creatures will decay slowly but steadily. But perhaps Aregbesola, who wrote WAEC as his academic qualification, as published in the papers even though he claims to be an engineer, is not conversant with biology. Aregbosola But Aregbesola’s tantrums need not detain us here. Our main point his call for rebellion in Osun, a move informed by a lack of historical education. He said: “Any security agent, be it policeman or soldier, that flouts the laws, we would show them that we are true sons of the Yoruba ethnic group. I said it in Iwo and I’m repeating it here. Ekiti has gone. The state has chosen its path. Let us forget about it. It is democracy. Any security agent, who does not flout the law, would be our friend. Any other one that goes contrary to the law, we would deal with him.” He told his “State Boys” not to be rattled by any threat from the security agencies, stressing: “They are afraid of you. They threatened to lock down Osun. Be ready, nothing will happen. Remain unshaken.” In Aregbesola’s reductionist world, there are no true sons of Odua among the security agencies. Indeed, he may not know about the Maji Maji uprising, a violent resistance to colonial rule in the German colony of East Africa, following a German policy designed to force African peoples to grow cotton for export, lasting from 1905 to 1907. The policy bred social discontent and the people were justly angry. A rogue named Kinjikitile Ngwale, who claimed to be possessed by a snake spirit, however saw a golden opportunity in the people’s calamity. He gave his followers war medicine which he claimed would turn German bullets into water. Kinjeketile’s “war medicine” was in fact water (maji in Swahili) mixed with castor oil and millet seeds. And so, armed with spears and other lowly weapons, and believing in their war medicine, Kinjeketile’s followers challenged German troops, who were armed with machine guns. As the machine guns mowed them down, the freedom fighters realized their error, but it was too late. Those who were lucky retreated, throwing away their bottles of war medicine and crying, “The maji is a lie!”. Said a historian: “The Maji- Maji rebellion left 15 Europeans and 389 native soldiers and tens or even hundreds of thousands of insurgents and innocent bystanders dead. It also broke the spirit of the people to resist and the colony remained calm, thanks also to a change of governors which brought a more enlightened regime, until the outbreak of World War I. Lions in the area developed a taste for human flesh in the wake of the slaughter and the Songea region is still plagued by man-eaters.” Indeed, if the Ngoni/Maji Maji soldiers who had a just cause to fight, nevertheless lost the battle owing to false weapons, with which weapons is Aregbesola, who has no just battle to fight, planning to deal with the security agencies? How on earth can a man who turned graduates to labourers cutting grass with machetes under the hot sun on a salary of N10,000 per month in the 21st century be seeking second term? What kind of egregious insult is this? To compound matters, he seeks to re-install himself in Government House with a ragtag army of State Boys! Although the security agencies that Aregbesola is preparing his State Boys to confront are not an army of occupation, only morons would dare them on election day as they strive to keep the peace and give the nation another landmark election that would drive the nation’s democracy to greater heights. If Aregbesola is prepared to confront erring security agencies (erring, because they would not allow election rigging), he should rouse members of his own family, not other people’s children, to the battle. Had Aregbesola run a purposeful government, he would not now be chasing shadows, heating up the polity and stoking the fires of a foolish war, just because he has correctly foreseen his impending defeat in August. The Osun people, battered by his misrule, are prepared to rout him from Government House. They will speak with their votes, defy Aregbesola’s State Boys, and then the drums of true leadership devoid of vile propaganda will begin to sound in Osun. Truly, the Osun people are people of honour (iyi), and they will prove it in a few day’s time. As for the State Boys whom the governor has asked to deal with the security agencies, they should keep a date with the Yoruba Apala exponent, Haruna Isola: “Aro to loju, to nimu, to n dite m’ara adugbo wipe k’ogun o de, aanu won se mi.” Isola pitied the cripples crying for war. And so do enlightened Nigerians. |

The Super Eagles coach dismissed rumours in some sections of the media that blame a fractured relationship between the pair as the reason for the winger's exclusion from Nigeria's last two games. "It’s purely medical," Keshi said. "My last child is older than Moses, so why will I quarrel with my son?" he queried. "People must find out facts and not speculate, especially when we have a capable media person in our midst." Keshi further revealed that Moses has a muscle strain that was discovered by the team’s medics after the first game against Iran and he was advised to rest it so that he can come out better in subsequent games. "We can understand that all players want to play at the big stage but it’s up to us and the medical team to manage their career and balance it with due diligence regarding their health, and that is why we have not played him. We hope he should be back in training later on Thursday." The winger is expected to be available for Nigeria's second-round encounter against France in Brasilia. Source: www.Kickoff.com

Emenike hunt could suggest large scale revamp. While Chelsea are known to be chasing big name strikers Diego Costa and Mario Mandzukic all summer, their boss Jose Mourinho may have sprung a sudden surprise by making a £16 million bid for a relatively lesser known striker in Emmanuel Emenike. The Daily Express reports that the Blues are keen on landing the 27-year old Nigerian ace, who has also impressed so far at the World Cup finals in Brazil. Emenike is also said to be keen on a switch to the Premier League. "I have always dreamed of playing in England. If I get the opportunity to play in England - I wouldn't turn it down," the African said. The Fenerbahce man could be a typical Mourinho signing as he is known to have a very conspicuous physical presence up front. He has also established himself as possibly Nigerias best player in recent times, and has netted nine goals for them in 24 games since making his debut in 2011. Chelseas continued striker hunt may also spell doom for the likes of Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, who have not had the desired impact that was expected of them last season. What do you guys think? |

According to several newspapers, the tiny African country of Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims. The Angolan Minister of Culture, Rosa Cruz e Silva was quoted by news agencies and Angola newspapers as saying, "The process of legalisation of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human rights, their mosques would be closed until further notice." As part of the ban, the Angolan government ordered the demolition of the mosques in the country. According to Silva, the decision was the latest in a series of efforts to ban "illegal" religious sects in the country. Silva's statement was made during her appearance last week at the 6th Commission of the National Assembly. According to the minister, the move was necessitated in order to fight the emergence of congregations whose worshipping is contradictory to the customs of Angola culture. Not just Islam, many other faiths which have not been legalised will face closure of their houses of worship. Silva further said, "All sects on the list published by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in the Angolan newspaper 'Jornal de Angola' are prohibited to conduct worship, so they should keep their doors closed," she was quoted by Cameroon Voice?. "In addition, we also have a long list of more than a thousand legalization applications," she added. Speaking about it, Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos said, "This is the final end of Islamic influence in our country. This is a clear danger signal to all those big men who are good in sleeping with their bank account officers, in the name of "thank you for banking with us". While I was in Abuja, inside source showed few ladies in top banks who had come to "service" some Senators in a big hotel in the city. I was shocked! The source said that was how they "service" Governors and even big men in the Presidency. It is indeed a very big mess we have in Nigeria and now it has sent a House of Reps member to his early grave. Hon. Raphael Oloye Nomiye, who's representing Ondo State in the House of Reps, was said to be having his turn of "service" with his female Account Officer in his bedroom when something happened... Top security sources said he was having a sexual affair with a female banker in his private residence located at Gwarinpa Estate in Abuja when the unfortunate incident happened. When Daily Trust visited the deceased's residence at Second Avenue in Gwarinpa Estate, neighbours said the banker, who managed his accounts, rushed down from the one-storey building to inform the policemen on guard at the house that "oga just fell down and is vomiting blood." They said when the policemen entered into his room upstairs, they found him laying on the floor with a towel tied round his waist, while he bled from the mouth. He was then quickly taken to a private clinic on 3rd Avenue within the estate in his official Toyota Camry 2012 car. It was further learnt that doctors at clinic declined to attend to him, saying it was a "serious" matter, he was then rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja, where the doctors on duty later pronounced him dead. Police sources disclosed that the female banker who was "servicing" him, is now in police custody at Gwarinpa Police Station, Abuja. She had denied having sexual affair with the lawmaker before his death. But she has now changed her story after doctors at the National Hospital conducted an examination on the corpse, which confirmed that the late federal lawmaker, Hon Nomiye, had slept with a woman shortly before his demise. After the test result came out, the banker (name withheld) admitted to Police interrogators that she had actually slept with him and had helped him to clean up, following which he went into the bathroom, where he suddenly fell and began to vomit blood. Police investigators who inspected the lawmaker's house had succeeded in recovering some items, including a bottle of water, which the deceased lawmaker had drank from, some tissue papers and the clothes the man had worn earlier in the day. When Daily Trust visited the banker's private residence located at Kado Estate in Abuja, two of her friends, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said she and Hon Nomiye were friends. There was drama at the Palmgrove Bus Stop, Ikorodu Road, Lagos State, on Monday when a commercial bus driver stripped naked to avoid being arrested by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority. The LASTMA officials had blocked five different commercial buses for indiscriminately taking passengers by the side of the road. Passengers in the four vehicles were asked to alight, as officials of the traffic agency took over the wheels of the impounded vehicles. There was however drama when the old man who drove the fifth bus suddenly went inside his bus and brought out a bowl. A fetid odour emanating from the bowl polluted the fresh morning air. The LASTMA officers, policemen and commuters ran for cover. But one of the officials came back and stood his ground, wielding a baton and insisting that the man must follow them. When it became obvious that the odour strategy had failed, the driver began pulling off his clothes, prostrating by the front tyres of the vehicle and rolling on the floor. A crowd formed around the area, with some of the bystanders capturing the scene with their camera phones. One of the officials was heard telling his colleagues to "leave him alone and let him go." However, they took close shots of the vehicle number plate, and the driver, before taking other seized vehicles away. Our correspondent spoke with a resident who said he knew the old man well. He said, "That is how the man usually does. His bus plies Lagos Island everyday and he picks his passengers from that spot." The source, who did not identify himself, added that it was the second time the man would put up the show. He said the bus was owned by a military officer. When our correspondent approached the old man for comment, he refused to talk. When he was, however, confronted with the allegation of being a serial offender, he said, "Look, whoever wants to talk should talk. Everybody has his problems and I have mine." He drove the vehicle into a filling station. Attempts to speak with LASTMA proved abortive. An officer who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone said he was not disposed to comment and referred him to another senior officer, who equally declined comment. Three policemen attached to the Sango Otta Police Station in Ogun State on Saturday evening caused a commercial bus to hit a waiting passenger, killing her. The policemen were making an illegal demand of N50, which the driver was not willing to pay. Eye witnesses told SaharaReporters the incident occurred at about 8.30pm on Saturday at the foot of Sango bridge, which runs in front of the police station. They said the three policemen, who have not been identified, harassed the driver into a dangerous speed which led to his hitting the passenger, who was waiting for a bus. The victim, who began to bleed profusely, was ignored by the policemen as they continued to chase the bus to collect the N50 they were trying to extort from the driver. One of the witnesses, a trader who sells electronics at the POWA shopping complex attached to the police station, disclosed that it was not unusual or the policemen to harass innocent drivers at the bus stop to collect their illegal N50 charge or to hijack busses from commercial operators for their own purposes. “It is not new. They do this every time, scaring bus drivers with guns to extort N50 from them. Sometimes they hijack busses whenever they see one that is empty so that they use it to operate deceptively and extort other buses,” the witness said. The victim, identified simply as Mrs. Lawal, reportedly bled for more than one hour before a passer-by who recognized her sent a message to her children. One of them hurried to the scene with his friends to find his mother dying helplessly. The deceased’s son, Mr. Feyi Lawal, told our correspondent that his friends who went to the scene with him assisted to take his mother to Rubi hospital, a private medical center near the accident scene. They were however later referred to the government’s “General hospital” due to the severity of her injuries. Feyi said his mother gave up just before she could receive any treatment at the General hospital. A female police officer who attended to Feyi and his friends at the station on Sunday when they visited to make report, took Feyi’s statement but denied him the right to include in the statement a complaint about the police harassment which led to the accident, which was written down by herself. Writing the statement by herself, she claimed it was a ‘hit-and-run’ driver. All witnesses however debunked claims by the police, insisting that the accident was caused by extortionist policemen. “They are always the first to come out and help victims of accidents, but because they caused this one themselves, they hid their faces in their station and left the victim to die,” said an eyewitness. “It is either they wanted to take his bus for their illegal operation or they wanted their usual illegal N50. But it is most likely they wanted to take his bus because I noticed the bus was empty,” another witness said. He added that the bus drove dangerously in order to escape the gun- wielding policemen. He also alluded to another recent occasion where a police officer accidentally shot bullet on himself in a delicate point near his own jugular after hitting his service gun on a bus conductor in demanding N50. On that incident, he pointed out that the policeman was negligently using his gun to hit the bus conductor, somehow oblivious of the fact that its nuzzle was close to his own throat. The gun accidently fired, and the bullet allegedly shattered the neck of the police officer. According to him, colleagues of the erring police officer then arrested the conductor, although he was clearly innocent. Said a woman who trades in front of the police station, “I really don’t know why, but the police own vans which officers could use for their operations; why force buses that are working on their own to do illegal police operation?” The witnesses also said policemen in Sango Otta are notorious for arresting people who have committed no offences, only take them to the station and demand bail money and “DPO’s fee” of N5,000. “They work with touts under the bridge. Those touts also arrest people that urinate and demand bail. But we are surprised that they won’t arrest those polluting the wall with ruling party’s posters since they claim they are arresting polluters,” another witness volunteered, pointing at the walls of the bridge littered with campaign posters of the ruling party in Ogun State, the All Progressives Congress. “They are all thugs; the government agencies, police and the touts. They work together to harrass people,” asserted a resident, who pleaded anonymity. “Well, Sango has become more notorious. But what we fear even most now is the police because they can kill for just N50,” another resident at Temidire bus stop said. A citizen journalist was arrested in Sango during the period that the bridge was under construction. The young journalist was taking photograph of policemen who were seizing bikes for no offence and extorting them. Although there are conflicting views as to whether the police eventually arrested the vehicle that was chased into a waiting crowd, sources close to the station unanimously agreed that the police would merely demand money from the driver if they get him, and then shield him from families of the deceased. Some members of the family of Mrs. Lawal have indicated that they may sue the police over her death. Source: www.daillybook..com/2013/11/irresponsible-nigeria-policemen-cause.html?m=1 |
