From your tone I'm guessing you're getting agitated. ... sub plots aren't the same as blending. If you are wise, t hen you should know that nollywood should do more movies like that. I understand that you want to get in touch with your culture.. boo hoo... you don't expect nollywood to show you everything you need to know. Use the internet or ask your parents to sit you down and tell you. Do you watch hollywood movies? |

Ihuomadinihu: Oct 1 and Half of a yellow sun explored other ideas apart from War and Colonialism. I mentioned other relevant themes that can be incoporated into one movie. Quit putting words into my mouth. Read and understand without drawing inferences. Very good movie out there have sub plot. See why I said you don't know movie production. Sub plots enhance movie's storyline for heaven sake. The titanic was based on real life but the addition of the love angle made that movie what it is. A movie that's going to centre solely on colonialism is likely to get boring at a point, that's why it's a movie and not a documentary |

Ihuomadinihu: What awards? African awards? Lol. So what exactly is your problem? You have no argumentative or criticism skills. The premise of my argument is that these movies should be able to showcase our history as a people with the help of improved technical skills. You cannot throw away your culture and heritage cos you wanna appeal to the diasporal,it doesn't work like that. These fresh ideas and concepts should reflect what's going on in or has already happened in Nigeria, that is where South Africa and Congo have an edge over us. If you want to improve your knowledge in history then read and stop waiting for the movies to show you. I've told you there are movies out there about culture. See 'doctor bello' they've done that. This isn't old nollywood where you emphasise on a particular theme/plot. This is new nollywood where there's avenue for diversity.. can't you get it. You're talking as if there are no new nollywood movies on culture colonialism slavery etc. Your only beef is that they've decided to explore other ideas. Evolution |

Ihuomadinihu: Yes,i want nollywood to explore African myths seeing that hollywood have their own version. I want to see more movies on Colonialism and British Expedition, Neocolonialism, Terrorism,Millitancy, Political violence. You can keep your silly Kalus and Elijah for yourself. Reasonable people want to see more African stories, they are the ones getting nominated and accolades on the international scene. It's not kalus.. reasonable people want to see fresh ideas. New nollywood did not throw the Nigerian culture away but rather blended it with new concepts. What's wrong if there's a movie centered on love and other human peculiarities. I asked you how many old nollywood movies have exploited those ideas you want. But there are new nollywood movies to satisfy that. If you don't know Ojuju has a good international recognition. And the cause of the virus movie is contaminated water, a problem facing many African societies. So your criticism is invalid. These new nollywood movies actually gain award and recognition internationally. Do your research... |

Ihuomadinihu: Amadioha, Sango etc are African gods. You are out of touch with African culture, just accept it! Which African group does not have tales of creatures visiting them from out of this world? The joke is on you....let me hear word abeg! Go and make one and let's see where it takes you. FYI.. I'm working on that. This is new nollywood vs old nollywood right. You're on the side of old nollywood. One of your silly point is that you want to see books adapted into movies, maybe you don't know but there is one; a product of new nollywood. Maybe you don't know. So you just argued on the side of new nill without knowing. You also want a movie depicting history and colonialism, 'oct 1' ' amazing grace '. You want one about African myths, 'figurine'... seeing that you have no reasonable point. You're advocating for a movie adapted from tutuola's the palm wine drinkard. How many old nollywood movies explored these ideas? If you want to know about Nigerian myths and legends, I'd be happy to put you through for no charge. Allow movie makers run wild with their imagination and stop being a back sit driver.. |

Ihuomadinihu: You just giving yourself headache over nothing, really. Why put words into my mouth? We all agree that nollywood is evolving but it should be an instrument to tell our stories. Kunle Afolayan is thinking of weaving a story about a popular Primary school textbook. That is the kind of creativity the world is looking out for. Till date , Hollywood is still making movies about Martin Luther and the Black Panthers. Nollywood should be a mirror of the Nigerian/African society and Lifestyle. Why limit movies to contemporary issues. I mean military dictatorship just happened some years ago in Nigeria, using your American independence stuff holds no water here! We have relevant issues like terrorism and militancy, movie producers should be able to make something out of that with better technical skills out there. Hypocrites like you have a problem with African lifestyle, period! What's your problem with Rituals and Divinatiion? These issues are still relevant to the common man out there, maybe you are out of touch with reality. They can be blended into our movies, just like how China and Bollywood are blending in their respective lifestyles. You claim to be a movie enthusiast, yet you are not making sense at all. Aliens are perceived as extra terrestial beings, don't we have creatures, animals, legends that are perceived as same in Nigeria. Why make a movie about your aliens, when we have local aliens/ideas or creatures to explore here? Sit down and think like a Nigerian for once. Just checked your profile and could only see tales of batman, kalus, elijah, games and a whole lot of nonesense. It's unbecoming! So you want to see amadioha, oduduwa, ajaka, sango on my profile before you'd agree I'm Nigerian. I'm a fan of creativity and good stuff. Sorry I don't limit myself. If we come down to Nigerian myths and legends I'm confident I'd still floor you. Aliens are extra terrestrial, that means out of this world. And Nigeria is among this world.... |

Don't know why igbos are letting one man manipulate them with so much success. You can decide to feel inferior or you can decide to make something good for yourself. This all biafra idea is one born out of hate and disruption. No one is made to feel inferior without their consent. This country has been together for so long, in as much as there are conflicts. Conflicts are present in any developments community, it hinders progress if it's fed will such destructive movements. Why for heavens sake would you want to start from square zero. These radio biafra guys are just deceiving you guys. It's something born out of greed. So tell me, if igbos break away, they think it's going to be a conflicts free equal society? No way. It has been man's nature to have the feeling that his tribe is superior. The ngwa man would feel superb to the ikuwano man. Do now force your ideas down another man's throat. It's obvious these biafra advocates are trying to force the ijaws and co to join their movement, another clear case of manipulation. What baffles me is that even some of the enlightened ones have bought into this idea. You guys should wise up, these biafra advocates do not care about anyone but themselves. They do not even care about the average igbo man, this whole thing is based on deception. #IamanigboandIrefusedtobedeceived |

Ihuomadinihu: Yes, Africans will continue to be seen as backward when you jump from relevant issues into things that are worthless to a developing Nation. Backwards, cos we can't interpret our stories and turn them into a movie but waste resources on a genre that mean nothing to most people out there. With people like you,Oscars and international awards is not coming to Nigeria anytime soon. And the old nollywood got us those international awards right. You talk of oscars as if you have the slightest idea what it's about. You just sit down and think it's soo easy in the movie sector. Any writer is free to explore any idea. Aliens are perceived extra terrestrial beings and exploring any idea on that isn't limited to a specific country. If a nigerian film maker wants to make a movie about mutation or mutated beings is he as free as air to. You don't just sit down and bash anyone for exploiting his creativity because you have known. Adaptations from books aren't as easy as you think they are and at least there's a movie adapted from a book. You don't just like what you can't understand, it's a pity. It's a relief to see that our movie makers are now exploring fresh ideas other than rituals. How many hollywood movies are produced in a year that talk about the civil war, they explore everything. Watch Abraham Lincoln vampire hunter and see how they blended history with imagination. How many hollywood movies focus on declaration of the American independence, yet hypocrites like you appreciate their works. But when an African decides to make us of his imagination, you criticise him. Watch the Ojuju movie and tell me it isn't different to what we are used to seeing. You criticised mirror boy, I doubt you grasped the plot of that movie. Appreciate the power of imagination and stop limiting yourself. |

Ihuomadinihu: I don't think the Nfvcb is really doing enough to get us exposed in the international scene. Why can't we be represented at the international festivals. How much does it take to rent a stand? There are better things to do other than censoring movies and videos. These film events are where top distributors, marketers and producers mingle and exchange ideas. Nigeria's abscence doesn't really tell good about nollywood which is supposed to be the face of Africa. Even when people expose their movies ,they do that on personal/individual sponsorship. We need funds from the government and public and private establishments,if we want to see quality nollywood movies. The top actors and actresses should be given roles only based on merit. While diversity of genres is commendable, we should keep it strictly African. Nothing stops us from having an African Scific or incoporating mythicism or basic Nigerian lifestyle in our stories. Socially relevant themes should be given more attention, casting a group of pretty actors with an accent wouldn't take nollywood anywhere. How distinct must nollywood be from Western movies for it to remain appreciated by everyone is the left for the movie producers to tackle. You do know that no one wants to argue with you anymore ba? Come back with more valid, smart and reasonable points. Get your facts right and gain exposure. You want to see the palm wine drinkard on screen... just keeping shooting yourself in the foot |

It's now a tradition of seeing these '10 signs' list.. here are some of the most annoying 1. 10 signs she/he is in love with you. Oga if someone likes you and you are waiting for ten signs, you are on a long thing. 2. 10 signs he/she is cheating on you. This one will just be based on one individual's heart break. They will now start making someone suspecting his/her faithful partner. 3. 10 signs a boy/ girl is still a virgin. Biko since when did they start giving awards for spotting virgins. "Spot a virgin and win a life time award of busy body". Mind ya business. 4. 10 signs she/he is the one for you. Excuse me.. when did cupid die and leave you in charge of matchmaking?? 5. 10 ways to make a girl/boy like you. The painful thing about this one is that these people who make this list are more single than a priest. 6. 10 signs you're dating a small boy/girl. Shuoo.. me that's dating her did I tell you I don't know? Leave it for me... 7. 10 types of boyfriends/girlfriends. I'm pretty sure my type of gf is not there. 8. 10 signs he/she has a bright future. Nostradamus... why you no go open psychic parlour na.. mtchewww 9. 10 signs he/she is about to break up with you. Ehyaa.. we know you are still nursing your heart break but biko stop trying to be a joy killer.. not cool... 10. This list. It's probably going to annoy many people.. heck it's even annoying me. Why would a third world country like Nigeria make zombie movies when it's yet to join the jet age? Zombie movies are classified under horror. Any brilliant writer can decide to write a kick ass horror movie exploring the idea. So there's nothing concerning jet age and zombies. Aren't there hollywood movies concerning witches? So why can't we have Nigerian movies about zombies? Abi zombies are bionic now? You just decide to limit Nigeria. Nwangoma: Sorry* this the same person, let me continue from where is stopped. Yes,some of the new movies are simply overated and crappy. They can only boost of goodlooking fellows, posh locations, better audio and sound quality. But they are as corny as the old nollywood sector. Take the Last flight, for instance, that was an attempt to tell a story about flight mishaps and they failed woefully. While watching it,i felt they were trying to rip off American Airforce 1 movie. Let's face it,Nigeria is not ripe enough enough for such movies. Technologically,we are not there yet. The movie was a total mess, the plot was just there, the CIG effects were messy and hillarious. Wetin concern Nigeria and Technological and Science fictions. Are these stuffs obtainable in Nigeria at the moment. Can we boost of well equiped security gadgets on our streets and airpots? Last flight to abuja has its faults.. but trying to imitate Airforce one is not one of them. The storylines are very different.. please re-watch airforce one. And you also need to be open minded about the growth of science and technology in Nigeria. Also, it's CGI not CIG. I'd recommend you watch 'gone too far' and give us feedback |

parrotibaba: I don't really get this "Nollywood is dying" posts flying all over NL. The problem with some Nigerians is dat de do not want to evolve into the latest trends happening in the world. How can a sensible human being compare the likes of Igodo n Living in bondage to d likes of October 1 n phone swap? No doubt those "old" movies r classics but really? The new Nollywood movies(not d pound road aba made movies) r better much more better dan d old ones in any category u see fit to compare ,whether it be d actors or d storylines or d film production. Some of d comments here r plain ridiculous ,y'all read Nigerian thriller novels or the romantic ones but when d story moves to d screens u call it westernized ,WTF? Must our movies be all about a wicked mother-in-law who decides to use witchcraft to kill her son's wife or about gangsters kidnapping n living in uncompleted buildings or worst still d incessant family wahala dat involves d man cheating on his wife. We r in d age of digitalization as most ppl hv a smartphone n laptops with dem so if a movie decides to follow dat trend den it is an "American copy copy" movie. There r many genres in movie making n u r free to choose any.
Rather dan aimlessly criticizing d new Nollywood movies we should encourage dem by...
- Going to cinemas to patronize dem
- Constructively criticize the various parts that needs improvements
- Stop patronizing d Alaba film pirates; this will encourage more film producers to pump in more cash into a better film making experience n also help push some of our novels to dis producers for adaptation.

TV/Movies › Re: The Nollywood Industry Is Dying Slowly by badinfluence: 12:14am On Jul 13, 2015 |
Nwangoma: Like i said,i am currently busy at yhe moment. Apart from Oct 1,none of these new movies have left any impression on my mind. Basically, most of them are deviating from what it means to be Nigerian. There is this conscious attempt to appear urban, contemporary and westernized in these new movies. Besides, when i mentioned Living in Bondage and the rest, you can clearly see that i never mentioned the recent old nollywood craps like the royal gate, royal prince stuffs. I would say i prefer the pre nollywood movies of the early 90s to both old and new nollywood. As for the actors,i would probably vouch for guys like Oc Ukeje,Blossom Chukwujekwu,Tope Tedola,Bimpe of Tinsel and a few others that i've seen in recent productions. The rest of them don't measure up. Am yet to see people that can fill up the place of Pete Edochie, Olu Jacobs,Liz Benson,Bimbo Akintola, Hilda Dokubo etc. I've not seen exceptional talents relative to some of the aforementioned names. These new actors will tell you they all look up to them. These new nollywood productions are cinema stuffs, you can't slot it in for the average 50yr old person out there and expect him or her to relate to some of these movies. I have seen some of them, like when love happens, love or something like that, alan poza etc. And they have nothing to do with the lives of the average Nigerian on the streets, there is virtually little or no local content. Why are Bollywood, Thai, and Hollywood movies popular worldwide? Cos they stick to what's obtainable within the immediate environment. Both periods should be combined otherwise nollywood aint going anywhere. New nollywood or not,we have better movies from other African countries, maybe till new nollywood fetches more prestigious AMAA awards,we can truly say that it's better than the old period. Oga so until there's a scene involving a witch doctor, a Nigerian movie isn't depicting culture. There's something called evolution dude, and that's what's going on. You can't just conclude that the average Nigerian's life revolves around divination. 'living in bondage ' is an epic.. a good one. But that doesn't mean all nollywood movies should stress on the same theme. And the fact that these new actors look up to the older ones doesn't make them lousy actors. Even hollywood evolved if you don't know, moreover their diversity in movies is a key role to their success. Your point about a 50 year old Nigerian holds no water.. likewise your "local content " angle. Sit down and watch these movies again. Get the message, take note of the cinematography, watch the actors. Take your time. Maybe you watch movies like you watch music videos |

I agree that we now have good picture and sound quality etc. But it doesn't appeal to majority of the masses out there. And what's off about them.. it doesn't appeal to the masses? Probably because they are so used to those redundant movies of old. Movies that are produced under a week, flooding the market. Please tell me what makes a good movie and how you can compare a movie like 'Igodo" to 'the figurine' |

Nwangoma: Nothing beats the old nollywood. We had seasoned and trained actors. This new nollywood industry(cinema movie) is just trying to mimic hollywood. I prefer some of those good old movies like Igodo, living in bondage etc. Those were the movies that established Nigeria on the movie industry scene. I will make more contributions on this topic...am busy at the moment. The new movies aren't attempts at mimicking hollywood, rather they are attempts at raising the standard of the Nigerian movie industry.. and I doubt you've actually seen these new actors. These are people with exceptional talents, some actually passed through film academies. Gone are the days when roles were shared amongst a specific set of people. I'd be happy to recommend some new nollywood movies for you, I doubt you've actually had time to see these movies. |
