Helipads are meant to serve as visual markers and provide clearance for safe landings from obstructions and also what is referred to as "whiteout" or "Brownout" landing conditions where the aircraft lands on a snowy or dusty surface respectively.

These two adverse landing conditions reduce vertical downward visibility to zero making it impossible for the pilot to gauge how close or far he is from the surface.

This was what led to the crash involving the VP when the Caverton crew attempted to land in a dusty open field in Kogi.

The pilot couldn't see how close he was to the surface as a result of the downdraft that lifted dust debris (brownout) and so he hit the ground with too much vertical down force making the chopper to overturn.

This is why Helipads are also very crucial to safe landings where altimeter settings are not available.
