Food / Nutritional Value Of Ponmo by bamiwale: 8:45pm On Sep 19, 2022
There is the popular saying that cow skin (ponmo) has no nutritional value. Many of us have heard that over and over but few have questioned it. Please see below the text of an artilcle published last year by The Punch newspaper.

Ponmo contains beneficial nutrients, says dietitian
By Dayo Ojerinde

Against the narratives that cowhide otherwise known as Ponmo contains no nutritional benefit, a dietitian, Mrs. Oluwakemi Olanrewaju, has said it provides the body with important nutrients.

In an interview with our correspondent, Olanrewaju said although Ponmo had low nutritional value when compared to other protein sources, it contained beneficial nutrients and contributes adequately to peoples’ diets.

She said, “Over the years, people have debated about the nutritional value of Ponmo. Growing up, we were told that it doesn’t contain any nutrient and it is just considered as skin but after so many scientific studies, Ponmo actually contains beneficial nutrients which provide the body with important nutrients.

“A 100g of boiled, thick cow skin contains about 224.65kcal of energy, 6.80g of carbohydrate, about 43.9g of water, 46.9g of protein, 1.09g of fat, and 0.02g of fibre. For micronutrients, it contains small amounts of calcium (61mg), iron (4.3mg), magnesium (12mg), phosphorus (36mg) and Zinc (6.79mg).

“Although Ponmo has low nutritional value when compared to other protein sources because it doesn’t contain all essential amino acids, it contains a lot of collagen which is the most abundant protein in our bodies. Because our bodies produce collagen, it is not essential that we must eat collagen for growth. However, as we grow older, our ability to produce collagen reduces leading us to have wrinkles.”

The expert said it was important that people cook their cowhides properly before consuming them.

“It is highly recommended to sundry, soak in water and wash Ponmo to reduce the level of some contaminants. It is best to remove the hair and boil it properly before consumption.

“Ponmo is a good weight loss substitute that is unique with fewer calories and tastes nice when properly cooked in dishes. However, it should not be a replacement for great sources of complete protein such as beef and fish,” she said.

If you don't have much money to dole out, simply look for an alternative, cos whoever snapped all the top level extensions of a domain meant business. So to get it will cost you an hand and a leg. Well, if you can reach the owner directly via the registrant information, you can give it a try, who's gonna tell the good old daddy, you came calling! grin
Thank you so much.
Webmasters / How To Buy A Domain Name Already Taken by bamiwale: 2:49am On Feb 17, 2018
I wanted to buy a domain name but found out it's already taken. I checked the domain's whois and found a phone number, and email of the admin. Reading the the page however, I realized it is prohibited to make any solicitation without Godaddy's permission is prohibited. The registrant already registered the dot com, dot org and dot net of the name. Now, my questions are these:

Does that prevent me from reaching out to the owner through the phone number/email?
If I can, what is the best way to go about it? I am not familiar with how this kind of negotiation goes and i do not have much money to dole out.

Thank you for your advice.

Where are the pictures of the decampees? Having Akala and Folarin, two major contestants in the last governorship election decamp to a party is a big deal as can be seen from the crowd size. But, whoever published this article did not match the headline well with the pictures. The pictures could have been taken at another event. Just saying.
Politics / White House Reportedly Overrun With Cockroaches, Mice And Ants by bamiwale: 12:53am On Dec 02, 2017
The White House has a vermin problem.
A number of work orders at the White House show it is overrun with cockroaches and mice, which have taken up residence in the situation room as well as a mess hall in the basement of the West Wing, NBCreported.
Mouse traps were also set outside Vice President Mike Pence’s outer office along with the ground floor of the West Wing.
It appears the traps worked — later entries noted dead mice in the traps, with one request reading, “Landscape shop to check all the traps in the West Wing...because they’re smelling something funky or dead mouse.”
In addition to dealing with the pressures of the job, Chief of Staff John Kelly has to contend with a colony of ants living in his office.
The Oval Office bathroom was also in need of a new toilet seat, with directions that it be installed “after hours please.”
Plenty of the work orders were mundane requests to hang up TVs, replace light bulbs, and fix leaky faucets in the White House, which is now more than 200 years old.
Other instructions shine a light on the ways in which the Trumps are making the White House their own.
Drapes were installed in Melania Trump’s office, with specific instructions from the designer that read, “I would like the drapery to break the floor - touching but not puddling.”
The Oval Office was also deemed “too cold”, with one request asking that the temperature be raised by two degrees.
Trump, who reportedly called the White House a “real dump,” called for renovations in the West Wing. In addition to new wallpaper, the Oval Office was notably fitted with gold drapes.

How I wish more people would take advantage of this kind of mentoring you're offering. There is a wide knowledge gap for a lot of agric entrepreneurs. Zeal alone is not enough, practical knowledge is priceless.
Fish4wealth:

Have you ever wondered why some students fails and otherss will pass under same atmosphere....simple....those who pass take it more seriously.....
My first question.....how many young aspiring agropreneurs can name one mentor he/she seriously worked closely with to tap from such mentor's wealth of experience......what we have are online aspiring agropreneurs who are still de-illusioned...

Their is a greater role of the government ranging from people friendly policies, realistic farming environment, assesibilty to agric funds, local and international market windows, well developed and technologically tailored research, etc

Youth of the 21st century must understand the fast changing economic space that abounds hence the need to come to terms with their passion. Why is agriculture taken as an alternative source of income and not primary source of income....we must change our orientation

I'm open to mentoring any serious minded youths who sees agriculture as a good means of livelihood and ready to engage in developing the agric sector....buzz me on 081...537..016..13....check my signature

Agriculture / Re: Challenges Of Agric Start-ups And New Farmers. by bamiwale: 11:42pm On Sep 21, 2017
To me, one of the most common huddles I found among new farmers is lack of knowledge of agriculture. A lot of new farmers go into the business with the mindset of profit making arising from some analysis they read online. However, some of these online get-rich quickly analysis are written by e-marketers and pen farmers who have no practical experience with farming. Many have followed them to failure.

My advice: get a mentor in whatever field of Agric you plan to go into. Someone that has walked the rope. If you start your own enterprise close to the location of such mentor you, you have increased your chances of success in great bounds. If not, close the gap by constant communication.

I want to invite the dons of the Agriculture section to kindly make contributions to this thread. Let's gain some more from you.

Agriculture / Challenges Of Agric Start-ups And New Farmers. by bamiwale: 5:13pm On Sep 19, 2017
There has been a lot of promotions about agriculture being the new way for us, both as a nation and individuals, these past years. But it has not been such a smooth ride for many budding farmers who went into agriculture with unbridled zeal and verve. Some weathered the storms and rode the storms to the greatness. Some aren't so successful with the terrain.
I have met quite a number of people that are so interested in going into agriculture but after being on the field for a year or two, many quit. Many went into agriculture with wrong expectations and many were not prepared for the challenges of the field.

What are the challenges of the Youth in Agriculture in Nigeria? What are the main problems you encountered along the way as a succeeding/successful farmer? How can the newbies avoid/overcome these problems?
Responses from experienced farmers are welcome.

Sola Saraki was never a Governor in Kwara State. If you run a blog, confirm your facts right before publishing.

Will lalasticlala be interested in getting this to Frontpage? If 8000 of Nairaland users donate N1000 each, the money will be complete. This is not about suing the hospital, restoration of her health should be prioritized.
N1000 each donation begins with you but you may do better.
N8 million is doable.
