By SaharaReporters, New York Military sources have told SaharaReporters that Tuesday’s unprecedented onslaught on Bama by suspected Boko Haram terrorists resulted in the death of two soldiers and 13 of the invaders during the fight at the military barracks. At the police barracks, a woman and two children were burnt to death, our sources said. They also confirmed that 22 policemen were shot dead by the terrorists at the Divisional Police Station, and 14 prison officials killed at Bama Prison Station. “The attack was repelled by soldiers on sentry a little distance from the Barrack’s Fence,” one of them said, appearing to be downplaying the severity of the incident at the military facility. SaharaReporters had earlier been told by sources that security agencies were still counting the numbers of the dead, and that several police were killed in the attack in which the militants released as many as 150 prisoners in Bama Prison. All the warders on duty were reported to have died. SaharaReporters has also learned that the following structures were attacked and burnt: · The Police Area Command and Divisional Police Station; · Bama Prison Station; · Magistrate Court; · Primary Health Centre, and · Police/MOPOL Barracks The following items were recovered: 3 AK 47 Rifles; 8 RPG launchers; 3 RPG Bombs, and eight magazines Earlier today, security sources told SaharaReporters that today’s brazen attack on military, prison and police formations in Bama is perhaps the biggest undertaken by Boko Haram militants. In an attack on Bama on April 26, suspected Boko Haram terrorists killed a Divisional Police Officer and scores of police officers. Three days later, on April 29, a Boko Haram/JTF duel resulted in the death of 17 persons. About 200 homes were reportedly burnt to the ground. |

One of the leaders of the Niger Delta
|
Ahead of 2015 general elections, Northern youths engaged former President of Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC) and Leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo- Asari, in a war of words over the re- election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. Dokubo had fired the first salvo while addressing a press conference in Abuja as he declared that the Niger Delta region cannot guarantee peace in Nigeria if President Jonath- an is not returned in 2015. He also stated that after Jonathan’s presidency, the region will resume claim to the resources in the oil-rich Niger-Delta, saying that they are currently on sabbatical leave. The Arewa youths, however, responded immediately warning Asari Dokubo to desist from beating the drums of war over the re-election of President Jonathan in 2015. *Asari They said that the choice of Nigeria’s next president would be determined by Nigerians and not Ijaw militants or pipeline contractors. Asari Dokubo in the interview pointed out that the reason there is relative peace in the country, especially in South-South geo-political zone currently is not because of the amnesty granted to Niger Delta ex-militants by late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s regime in 2010, but Jonathan’s presidency. Asari who spoke on a wide range of national issues also said that contrary to the claims of Jonathan’s critics that his administration is visionless, the administration has surpassed the previous ones in terms of provision of social infrastructure. He said: “I called this briefing because of events that are unfolding in the polity. Recently, the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Mr. Kingsely Kuku, made a statement in the United States of America, that the peace being enjoyed in the Niger Delta will not be guaranteed if President Goodluck Jonathan is not returned as President of Nigeria in 2015. “This statement has been supported by several groups from the region. Also, the statement has been attracting reactions from several quarters, expectedly from the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and others. “I want to go on to say that, there will be no peace, not only in the Niger Delta, but everywhere if Goodluck Jonathan is not president by 2015, except God takes his life, which we don’t pray for. “Jonathan has uninterrupted eight years of two terms to be president, according to the Nigeria constitution. We must have our uninterrupted eight years of two tenure, I am not in support of any amendment of the constitution that will reduce the eight years of two tenure that Goodluck Jonathan is expected to be president of Nigeria.” “For very long time, our resources from the Niger Delta has been used to feed and fund Nigeria, and some people are still feeling that Nigeria is their personal property, and they can manage it the way they like, but those days are gone forever, it can never come back again. Reacting to Dokubo’s threat, the President of Arewa Consultative Forum, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, described it as an unfortunate outburst borne out of ignorance and mischief ostensibly to elicit cheap patronage from The Presidency. Shettima regretted the statement credited to Dokubo, saying that it was wrong for the President to allow the former warlord to be speaking for him, thereby giving himself out as an ethnic Ijaw leader and not the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who was popularly elected based on the goodwill and support of the generality of Nigerians. He said, “President Jonathan should stop these elements from talking as if they alone elected him into office in 2011.” |

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, says President Goodluck Jonathan has justified the mandate given to him by the electorate in the 2011 general elections. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sunday Vanguard in Lagos, Okupe said the Jonathan administration inherited five major challenges in the power sector namely, low generation capacity, comatose NIPP projects, poor and inadequate gas supply and non- alignment of gas infrastructure with the location of the NIPP projects, poor and dilapidated transmission infrastructure and non-implementation of the privatization exercise in the sector. According to the presidential aide, within two years of the Jonathan presidency, four of those challenges have been substantially resolved and the only outstanding one, which has to do with transmission and distribution, will be resolved in the next 12 to 15 months. Doyin Okupe “Some of the transmission projects completed by the Jonathan administration within two years are Ganmo, Sapele, Katanpe, Mando, Kubotso, Alaoji, Ikeja West, Oworonsoki, Ojo, New Haven, Ajaokuta, Abuja, and Ihovbor. It is also during this period that Nigeria attained a peak generation of 4, 517 and we are certainly looking at about 10,000 megawatts by December this year.” According to him, the agricultural sector is another area where giant strides have been attained by the Jonathan administration with the progress made in rice, cotton and cassava production while making single digit loan available to farmers nationwide with the attendant potential of creating millions of jobs. In the aviation industry, he said over fifty percent of the nation’s airports have been rehabilitated and plans underway to assist indigenous airlines acquire new planes to end the era of avoidable crashes in the country. He explained that the moribund rail transportation is being revitalized nationwide. On the provision of road infrastructure, Okupe said major critical road projects in the country have been fully or in the process of rehabilitation. They include Benin Ore Road, Kano Maiduguri dual carriage way and Port Harcourt-Enugu Road. “This administration is also making efforts to construct the Second Niger Bridge and the East West Road. The first of its kind multi lane dual carriage Lagos Ibadan Express road of which the design has been fully completed will be ready in the next 24 months. “On the economy, the administration has been able to establish micro economic stability upon which we can now build in order to further improve on the standard of living and well-being of citizens. We have an excess crude oil account with a surplus of over 9 billion dollars, a foreign reserve of over 48 billion dollars, a Sovereign Wealth Fund of 1 billion dollars, a World Bank projected growth rate of about 6.5 which is the highest in the sub region and an inflation rate descent to 8.5 percent from 11 percent in the previous year.” |
Former Head of State and presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the 2011 general election, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), and National Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Senator Bola Tinubu, a few days ago, may have held a private meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal. But as the opposition coalition comprising CPC, ACN, All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), which is merging to form the All Progressives Congress (APC), sets its sights on 2015, President Goodluck Jonathan is also making moves to cover his flanks as the election approaches. In this regard, THISDAY learnt that the president hosted some select Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to a private dinner last night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where it is believed that issues concerning the party was discussed. However, it was gathered that the secret meeting, which might have taken place last week between the two leaders of the merging opposition parties and Tambuwal at a private residence in Abuja, is not unconnected to efforts by the opposition to woo the speaker to their party. The meeting was deemed a strategic gambit by the opposition to get Tambuwal to defect from the ruling PDP on whose platform he was elected to the House of Representatives, to the yet-to-be registered APC as the opposition party’s possible presidential contender in 2015. It was also learnt that the APC is already considering the zoning of political offices and might zone the presidency to the North-west, Tambuwal’s geopolitical zone. THISDAY further gathered that the APC is mulling the idea of zoning either the vice-presidential ticket or senate presidency to the South-west zone. The interim agreement reached at the meeting was that if the senate presidency is zoned to the South-west, then the Office of the Vice-President would be zoned to the South-east. According to an inside source within the coalition of opposition parties, the decision to allocate the senate presidency to the South-west was being done to pave the way for Tinubu to enter the senatorial contest in Lagos and bank on his past stint as a ranking senator to emerge as senate president. Should this go according to script, sources said Tinubu’s wife, Oluremi, who is currently the senator representing Lagos Central, will be expected to give up her seat to enable her husband contest. Though it was uncertain whether Tambuwal has committed to jettisoning the PDP for APC, sources said Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, was seriously considered as the speaker’s possible running mate, but the idea was discarded on the grounds that he is a Muslim. “Given the current mood of the nation, the party cannot field a Muslim-Muslim ticket right now; otherwise, the pairing (Tambuwal-Fashola) would have been a marriage made in heaven. As a result, the vice-presidential slot has been reserved for the South-east for now,” explained the source. THISDAY gathered that before the meeting with Tambuwal, APC had considered the former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasir el-Rufai. But the source said: “They were seen as too controversial and unmarketable in the north,” hence the need to look elsewhere. |

Bomb explodes behind Emir of Kano’s palace It is unclear if the latest attack was targeted at the Emir of Kano. An explosion has been reported near the Emir’s palace in Kano. The explosive device, driven in a keke NAPEP tricycle, went off metres away from the palace’s back fence, very close to the central mosque where the Emir prays on Fridays. Muktar Ahmed who prayed at a Mosque close by, minutes before the explosion, said the explosion occurred shortly after the Ishai prayer time, around 8:00 p.m. The casualty rate is still unknown as the police are still awakening to the incident. “The scene of the incident was immediately barricaded by the police,” Mr. Ahmed said. The Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, was a target of an assassination attempt in mid January. He was attacked by gunmen on a Saturday afternoon leading to the death of his driver and his orderly. The gunmen laid ambush on the convoy of the Emir around the Zoo road when he was returning from the Murtala Mosque in the city where he had gone to attend a Quranic recitation competition. He sustained minor injuries and was flown to London for treatment. It is unclear if the latest attack was targeted at the Emir. The Kano State Police spokesman, Rilwanu Dutse, could not be reached for details of the incident as he did not pick or return calls made to his phone. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/130081-bomb-explodes-behind-emir-of-kanos-palace.html |

The Coordinator General of the South- East Revival Group (SERG), Willy Ezugwu on Monday called on all Nigerians of Igbo descent to ensure that they pitch their voice against President Goodluck Jonathan at the 2015 general elections. In a statement emailed to Channels Television, Mr. Ezugwu said that “any person who is genuinely of Igbo extraction must be prepared to punish President Goodluck Jonathan at the next election or through mass protests that would amount to a vote of no confidence in him after the series of failed promises he made to garner votes from the region.” He accused President Jonathan of deceiving Igbo people with his campaign promises of 2011 as all his actions since coming into office have served to only further impoverish the one group of people who genuinely voted for him going by election figures. The statement said all that the people of the South East have to show for supporting the President in good faith is the array of phantom projects that if implemented would only serve to multiply the hell they presently live in. It said “Construction of the Second Niger Bridge is a fresh political dummy packaged by President Jonathan and his south-east proxy, Anambra state governor, Peter Obi and is being marketed under the guise of being financed through Public Private Partnership-PPP/BOT-Built-Operate & Transfer. “When Jonathan solicited support from Igbos in 2011 with promises of projects he did not disclosed to these trusting people that his grand plan was to sell them into the slavery that PPP-BOT amounts to since past events show that these concessions are usually granted to cronies who in turn share the resulting loot with those in government. “But all these are being disregarded in the bid to again hoodwink Ndigbo in the South East and cart away votes come 2015 Presidential election. The desperation of President Jonathan’s spinners is astounding. They are branding this project as the first of its kind in Nigeria when the harrowing experiences of some travelers in some parts of the South West since the collapsed of similar PPP-BOT project between the Federal Government and Bi- Courtney Ltd on rebuilding of Lagos/ Ibadan Express road expose the lie for what it is. “Private Building of the Second Niger Bridge with-no fixed completion date is the stuff fraud is made of. It would come with consequences on the people since the investor would be eager to recoup the resources invested and if history and happenings elsewhere are good guides, the profit taking in such ventures would be unregulated and at the expense of Igbo- race for next 40 years or for the number of years of slavery specified in the agreement. “We challenge those who routed for Jonathan Presidency to go ask him: what has been the benefit of swaying Igbos to support Jonathan and the PDP? What has happened to the national resources that the President is meant to hold in trust that he now has to start shopping for a slave master for the South East? Why has government abandoned the Onitsha Seaport project, a cargo airport in the South East and the Orient Oil refinery?” The SERG Coordinator asked. SERG asked Igbo people to immediately start shopping for there would be candidate for the next elections and particularly look out for a person that will protect their economic interest and not some who will willfully sell them into slavery. The group said the easiest way of ensuring this is to insist that a South-East Presidency in 2015 is a must with a warning to people who hide under the guise of social cultural groups to truncate the collective aspiration of Igbo people. It also said the people should not rule out having to take on the Jonathan government over any attempt to foist anti- people policies like PPP-BOT on them since access to world class infrastructure is embedded in the economic rights guaranteed by the laws of the land and that the government can provide these without recourse to sending Nigerians into slavery. According to SERG, the Igbo people must immediately activate all the democratic avenues available for punishing President Jonathan for reneging on his electoral promises. www.channelstv.com/home/2013/04/08/2015-igbo-group-swears-to-punish-jonathan/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

Pukkah: Invasion of a military checkpoint. |
A gang of suspected kidnappers have invaded the military check point mounted by the Joint Task Force, JTF at Agidigbo junction on Okpai/Aboh road in Delta State, killing an armed solider and also snatch a machine gun, just as unknown assailants shot two brothers while asleep at Abbi. It was gathered that the armed gang who swooped on the soldiers opened fire while the soldiers retaliated and at the end of the fierce gun duel, one of the soldiers lost his life and his machine gun was taken away by the gunmen. One of the gunmen was fatally wounded in the process and arrested as he was unable to flee along with his colleagues. The entire area has been cordoned off while the soldiers were conducting frantic search for the fleeing gunmen and the possible recovery of their machine gun. A number of road blocks had been mounted and residents, ostensibly afraid of any form of manhandling chose to remain indoors. A resident who pleaded an anonymity told our reporter that “that area leading to the gas plant had been witnessing a lot of kidnap cases. In short, Kwale, Beneku and environs in Ndokwa West local government area of Delta are now under siege following the killing of a soldier at a military check point by gunmen”, he stated. Contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Famous Ajieh said he was yet to get details of the invasion of the military check point. However on the shooting of the two brothers, PPRO Ajieh said that “report from Abbi village stated that one Akadibo Sunday, male aged 42 was shot at the back dead while asleep at night while one Chukwunalu Sunday 27, of same address was also shot in the chest wounded by unidentified assailants while trying to ascertain what was happening to the deceased. He added that “detectives have visited the scene and moved the wounded to the hospital and corpse to morgue while preliminary investigations are on www.vanguardngr.com/2013/03/gunmen-invade-checkpoint-kill-soldier-snatch-machine-gun/ |
