The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has said that the University has continued to maintain its Number One position among universities in the country because it is “blessed with a crop of dedicated staff, who take their jobs seriously”. Prof. Ambali, who stated this in Abuja penultimate Wednesday (December 23, 2015) during a visit to the Federal Ministry of Education, said that the choice of the University by most admission seekers in the country is due to its over 15 years uninterrupted academic calendar. The Vice-Chancellor, who was responding to a question posed to him by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, on “why Unilorin is the most preferred university among admission seekers in the country”, said, “The University started on a good footing as a branch of the University of Ibadan and within nine months, we were upgraded to a standard University and since then we have been championing the course of quality education.” Prof. Ambali explained further, “We ensure that we give the best education deserved. In the last 15 years, we have never closed our doors to our students. We have a dedicated crop of both academic and non-teaching staff that take their jobs seriously. We try to work towards our mission by ensuring that we create the enabling environment conducive for teaching and learning, and we cherish very much that when you come to the University of Ilorin you will feel proud to belong to the academic environment. We also ensure that the maintenance culture that is lacking in some universities is well adhered to”. Pointing out that the University has zero tolerance to vices such as cultism, examination malpractices, indecent dressing, corruption, and laziness to work, among others, the Vice-Chancellor said, “We have a well-cultured system on ground that whoever is caught will face the disciplinary committee and if found guilty will be asked to go and that has also given us a unique picture of a university”. “We continue to sustain whatever we initiated”, Prof. Ambali disclosed, explaining that “in the last three years, we started a programme of empowering all our students with PC tablets. This was well received by all and even this year will not be a difference. In a couple of weeks to come we will be distributing another set of PC tablets to our new students”. The Vice-Chancellor also told the Minister, “We also make sure that our staff abide by the rules of the game. We make sure that they know that the University belongs to them and that has been demonstrated. For instance, the University ASUU has built hostel for our students and constructed shopping mall for members of the University Community”. Prof. Ambali said that the University of Ilorin also has high regards for international scholarship. He said, “We have a number of MoUs with a number of international partners. We also have quite a number of international students. We also have a very good and robust research outfit. We also won a total of 10 research grant awards out of 22. The University of Ilorin is the first to attain such height in terms of research grants awards and among several other achievements and that has made the University of Ilorin truly the preferred choice”. Also with the Minister during the meeting were the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okojie, and the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Folasade Yemisi Esan, among other top ministry officials. source: unilorin.edu.ng cc: lalasticlala front page pls |

UNILORIN MAKING NAIJA PROUD SINCE 500 BC |
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research,
Technology and Innovation) of the University of
Ilorin, Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, has said that the
management of the University is set to put the
University on the world map, as it gears up to
break new grounds in the area of technological
development.
Prof. Olatunji disclosed this last Tuesday
(December 1, 2015) while featuring on 'Oro to n
lo', a Yoruba current affairs programme on
Unilorin 89.3 FM.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor said that a pointer to
the University's seriousness in realising this lofty
goal was the successful manufacture of drone by
a team of the University scientists led by Prof. S.
A. Abdulkareem of the Department of Chemistry.
According to Prof. Olatunji, the drone will be
deployed for such functions as disaster
management; security measure; weather
monitoring; aerial imaging, and public safety. It
will also take the pictures of crowd and towns,
record events, dispatch letters, and give security
reports of potential dangers on the campus.
Prof. Olatunji disclosed that efforts are being
made by the University management to ensure
that in the next 10 years, products like Unilorin
motor cars, Unilorin motorcycles, etc. will be in
the Nigerian and African markets.
It will be recalled that two sets of drones were
displayed during the just concluded 31st
Convocation/40thAnniversary of the University to
the admiration of the guests and members of the
University community.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the
drones were manufactured at the University of
Ilorin with imported parts from abroad.
The German-trained scientist disclosed that the
management is doing everything possible to
make sure that the University of Ilorin remains
better by far not only in terms of academic
excellence but also in research findings and
discoveries.
Prof. Olatunji also disclosed that the Unilorin
Virology Centre is underway, pointing out that
when completed, it will be saddled with the
responsibility of conducting research into,
identifying and combating new and existing
diseases in the society.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor stressed further that
on completion, the Virology Centre would
drastically reduce foreign medical tourism by
many Nigerian politicians and money bags. “It
will help the institution in achieving its mandate
of providing community service through
prevention and treatment of viral diseases”, he
said.
Prof. Olatunji also described the Central
Research Laboratory (CRL) of the University as a
world class resource with first class equipment
courtesy of the commitment of the Vice-
Chancellor of the nation's most patronised
University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON).
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, who commended
the management of the University for making
funds available for research, appealed to the
Federal Government to make more funds
available to tertiary institutions in the country to
meet their needs.
Prof. Olatunji described the choice of Prof. Isaac
Adewole as the new Minister of Health as a wise
decision, saying that the immediate past Vice-
Chancellor of the University of Ibadan is the right
man for the job.
The Professor of Chemistry also urged
academics never to shy away from politics,
saying that the country will remain in the
cesspool of poverty and underdevelopment if
technocrats from the education sector prefer to
be cowards.
While commenting on the current fuel scarcity in
the country, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor observed
that until the government as well as other well-
meaning Nigerians divert their attentions from
crude oil to agriculture, the problem will continue
to persist.
He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to make
agriculture his priority and to encourage local
farmers through soft loans.
Prof. Olatunji however disclosed that the
University administration has invested heavily on
date palm plantation, oil palm plantation, Teak
plantation, and Jatropha plantation, all of which
will eventually boost the institution's Internally
Generated Revenue (IGR) on maturation. |
