There was confusion in Amanato community in Onicha, Igboeze area of Ebonyi State during the weekend following the gruesome murder of a middle aged man.

Residents of the community were shocked when they found the headless body of one of their sons dumped along the road.

It was gathered that the deceased was beheaded at night when he was returning home from a popular drinking joint. According to residents, the incident was not unconnected with an irreconcilable differences between the deceased and his assailant whose name was given as Ogo Nwaji over the debt of N200.

It was learnt that the suspect allegedly confronted the deceased where they were drinking a local gin and requested that the deceased pay him the N200 debt he was owing him but the deceased according to an eyewitness claimed he was not owing him (Nwaji) any money.

Argument erupted in the process, which led to exchange of abusive words between the duo.

According to eyewitnesses, Nwaji who left the scene angrily, got to his residence, brought out a sharp cutlass and laid ambush on his victim at night and cut off his head as he was returning from a drinking joint.

BusinessFuel Scarcity: Abuja Women Take-over Black Market by barx(op): 9:37pm On May 20, 2015
While fuel scarcity bites harder in Abuja, black marketers have increased in number and smiling to the banks. In the days gone by, only male adults slug it out in the streets running around to sell the product, but today, women have joined the league. Women, dressed in wrapper and young ladies in trousers pace up and down the streets and armed with the hoses and jerry cans are common sights in Abuja and that has been the new trend in over three months the city has been grappling with the pains of fuel scarcity.

At the genesis, it used to be young men, especially from the north of the country that dominated the ad-hoc business.

Right now, it is quiet sad, that as it worsens, apart from women now in the picture, little boys of 11-15 who should be in school are out on the streets, even on the highways hawking a commodity that the country is supposed to have in abundance.

The question among Abuja residents is why fuel scarcity in the filling stations while supply never dries up among the hawkers in the black market. They express concern that they can’t situate where the hawkers get their supply from because the picture of dire scarcity painted by petroleum markers should also cause a dry-up in the supply that keeps the markets thriving.

Abuja Metro found that some black marketers travel to nearby states to get the fuel. But others say that they actually get it in Abuja as most filling stations prefer to sell to black marketers to customers with cars as the stations make massive profit from them.

From the security men at the filling stations who collect money to let cars that are not in the queue have access to the station, to the policemen who patrol around to seize fuel from hawker, sometimes collect bribe from the black marketers, so many odd businesses have been spawned by the man-made scarcity that has become part of the city’s life.

While people see the boys at the expressways and streets with gallons of fuel, there is always a nook around from where the main black marketers sell to the young men and now women, who the people refer to as the black marketers. Apparently, the boys on the street are not even the real ones but just the visible outlets out to get food or a little luxury in their life.

The hustllng of these black marketers is now part of the city as they hang around the major vroads. However, in their struggle, they are always on the look out for patrol vans of the police that seize their gallons of fuel

Abuja Metro spoke to a woman who is not only a visible black marketer but also the invisible as she sells to the boys. She said the reason there are more black marketers started from the top and boils down to the bottom with multiplier effects. She narrated that: “The problem is from the top because the filling stations also buy from the black market, so they sell it costly like they buy.  They also complain and there is no good profit, because getting the fuel has become very hard task. We get it at very high rate also. For every 25-litre sale, we make a profit of between N300 and N400. But if we get direct supply from Abuja, we can get it cheaper, but there is no reasonable profit.

Speaking on why there are women thriving too in the business, she said it is because of the economic situation in the country which is even worse with the fuel scarcity as cost of commodities and services also went high.

“When we come into the business, one will go home and tell the other woman the profit she made in the sales and by the next day, the woman who was told of the profit possibility also starts hawking. For instance, you tell her, I bought fuel at N3000 and sold it at N4000, making N1000 gain, the woman listening gets excited about such profit margin that also comes fast. Tomorrow she will eventually give it a try. That is why everyday you see more females on the streets hawking fuel.”

Still speaking on the struggle to make the best of the bad situation and how and where they get their fuel, she said, “we travel to the nearby states like Kaduna, Niger or Nasarawa or the outskirts of Abuja to get the fuel. I go there with two or three people. There, we buy at N130 for a litre but their liters are tampered with and the queues at the filling stations not so long that we save time buying unlike in Abuja where buyers can wait for an entire day to buy fuel.”

On the other hand, an engineer, Stanley Mbah, who works near a filling station along the Kubwa expressway said, “they get fuel here in filling stations in Abuja, I see them everyday, the filling stations prefer to sell to them than they to car because they make more profit from them. The question is, what is the Petroleum Task Force doing? Why can’t the government monitor where the fuel supplied filling stations go to? What is the media doing about exposing this wrong thing going on? When Nigerians talk of corruption at the top I say, it is around us, patrolling.”

“I have not seen anything done by the government, we see people hawking petroleum like groundnut and government officials that should enforce the stoppage pass like they don’t see them.

“Now women are in it, because of poverty, you see women and girls in the everywhere in Abuja hawking fuel, all out to look for food for the hungry mouths at home.”

CrimeMob Burns Woman To Death In Bauchi Market by barx(op): 1:49pm On Mar 01, 2015
Some residents of Bauchi on Sunday set ablaze a lady at the popular Muda Lawal market.

The mob were said to have acted after the lady refused to be searched, amidst suspicion she was a member of the Boko Haram, whose insurgency including use of suicide female bombers has caused the death of about 20,000 people including in Bauchi.

When confirming the incident to PREMIUM TIMES, the Bauchi police spokesperson, Haruna Mohammed, said the incident occurred at about 7:00 a.m. at the market entrance.

The spokesperson said police patrol teams including an explosive ordinance disposal unit rushed to the scene, dispersed the crowd and restored normalcy to the area.

The victim, yet to be identified, was already burnt to death when the police arrived, he said.

Mr. Mohammed, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the case was being investigated and the perpetrators would be arrested. He warned members of the public against taking laws into their hands as anyone arrested would face the full wrath of the Law.

A witness, Dauda Galambi, said he saw the protesters put tyres on the victim, and set her blaze while throwing stones at her, with some chanting “kill her, don’t allow her to go; kill her before security protect her.”

“Actually, I arrived late so I don’t know what happened. I only witnessed tyres on the lady and rains of stones,” the witness said. “But I was told she refused to be screened by the security officials at the market entrance.”

FamilyPlease Dissolve Our One-week Marriage, His Manhood Is Too Big, I Can’t Cope – Wi by barx(op): 11:04am On Mar 01, 2015
A Sharia Court in Samaru, Gusau, Zamfara State, was thrown into laughter during the week, when a housewife, Aisha Dannupawa, pleaded with the court to dissolve her one-week marriage to her husband, Ali Maizinari, because she could not cope with the size of his penis. When the case came up, Aisha told the court that she married her husband after the failure of her first marriage. Aisha, who is a mother of three told the court that before she packed into her husband’s house, as the tradition demanded, she was invited into his parents house, adding that “when he came, we had sex but the experience was a nightmare. Instead of enjoying the sex, it turned out to be something else because his penis was too big.” She also revealed to the court that after the horrible experience, she took some medication, which was given to her by her mother. “I told my mother about the experience but she told me to endure and that with time, I will be able to cope. She then gave me some drugs,” she said. She continued, “two days later when he came to visit me, we had sex again, but the experience was too much to bear. It was then I knew that I could not continue with the marriage because of the size of his penis.” The husband, Maizinari, who did not deny the wife’s allegation, told the court that he was willing to divorce her only if she would pay back the dowry and all that he spent on her during the courtship. When he was asked to state the total amount spent, Maizinari said that what he expected from her was N60,000. However, the President of the court, Alhaji Mamman Shinkafi, told the couple to try to reconcile before their next date in court.

RomanceAdvice For Building Relationships That Are Healthy, Happy And Satisfying by barx(op): 12:50pm On Feb 24, 2015
A strong, healthy relationship can be one of the best supports in your life. Good relationships improve all aspects of your life, strengthening your health, your mind, and your connections with others. However, if the relationship isn't working, it can also be a tremendous drain. Relationships are an investment. The more you put in, the more you can get back. These tips can help keep a healthy relationship strong, or repair trust and love in a relationship on the rocks.

How to strengthen your loving relationship
Everyone’s relationship is unique, and people come together for many different reasons. But there are some things that good relationships have in common. Knowing the basic principles of healthy relationships helps keep them meaningful, fulfilling and exciting in both happy times and sad:

What makes a healthy love relationship?

Staying involved with each other.
Some relationships get stuck in peaceful coexistence, but without truly relating to each other and working together. While it may seem stable on the surface, lack of involvement and communication increases distance. When you need to talk about something important, the connection and understanding may no longer be there.
Getting through conflict.
Some couples talk things out quietly, while others may raise their voices and passionately disagree. The key in a strong relationship, though, is not to be fearful of conflict. You need to be safe to express things that bother you without fear of retaliation, and be able to resolve conflict without humiliation, degradation or insisting on being right.
Keeping outside relationships and interests alive.
No one person can meet all of our needs, and expecting too much from someone can put a lot of unhealthy pressure on a relationship. Having friends and outside interests not only strengthens your social network, but brings new insights and stimulation to the relationship, too.
Communicating.
Honest, direct communication is a key part of any relationship. When both people feel comfortable expressing their needs, fears, and desires, trust and bonds are strengthened. Nonverbal cues—body language like eye contact, leaning forward or away, or touching someone’s arm—are critical to communication.

Relationship advice tip 1: Keep physical intimacy alive
Touch is a fundamental part of human existence. Studies on infants have shown the importance of regular, loving touch and holding on brain development. These benefits do not end in childhood. Life without physical contact with others is a lonely life indeed.

Studies have shown that affectionate touch actually boosts the body’s levels of oxytocin, a hormone that influences bonding and attachment. In a committed relationship between two adult partners, physical intercourse is often a cornerstone of the relationship. However, intercourse should not be the only method of physical intimacy in a relationship. Regular, affectionate touch—holding hands, hugging, or kissing—is equally important.

Be sensitive to what your partner likes. While touch is a key part of a healthy relationship, it’s important to take some time to find out what your partner really likes. Unwanted touching or inappropriate overtures can make the other person tense up and retreat—exactly what you don’t want.

Relationship advice tip 2: Spend quality time together

You probably have fond memories of when you were first dating your loved one. Everything may have seemed new and exciting, and you may have spent hours just chatting together or coming up with new, exciting things to try. However, as time goes by, children, demanding jobs, long commutes, different hobbies and other obligations can make it hard to find time together. It’s critical for your relationship, though, to make time for yourselves. If you don’t have quality time, communication and understanding start to erode.

Simple ways to connect as a couple and rekindle love

Commit to spending quality time together on a regular basis.
Even during very busy and stressful times, a few minutes of really sharing and connecting can help keep bonds strong.
Find something that you enjoy doing together, whether it is a shared hobby, dance class, daily walk, or sitting over a cup of coffee in the morning.
Try something new together.
Doing new things together can be a fun way to connect and keep things interesting. It can be as simple as trying a new restaurant or going on a day trip to a place you’ve never been before.

Couples are often more fun and playful in the early stages of a relationship.
However, this playful attitude can sometimes be forgotten as life challenges or old resentments start getting in the way. Keeping a sense of humor can actually help you get through tough times, reduce stress, and work through issues more easily.

Focus on having fun together

Think about playful ways to surprise your partner, like bringing flowers or a favorite movie home unexpectedly.
Learn from the “play experts” together. Playing with pets or small children can really help you reconnect with your playful side. If it’s something you do together, you also learn more about your partner and how he or she likes to have fun.
Make a habit of laughing together whenever you can. Most situations are not as bleak as they appear to be when you approach them with humor.

Learning how to play again

A little humor and playful interaction can go a long way in relieving tense situations and helping you see the brighter side. If you’re feeling a little rusty, learn more about how playful communication can improve your relationship, and for fun ways to practice this skill.

Relationship advice tip 3: Never stop communicating

Good communication is a fundamental part of a healthy relationship. When people stop communicating well, they stop relating well, and times of change or stress can really bring out disconnect. As long as you are communicating, you can work through whatever problem you’re facing.
Learn your partner’s emotional cues

Each of us is a little different in how we best receive information. Some people might respond better to sight, sound, or touch. Your partner’s responses may be different from yours. Take some time to learn your partner’s cues, and be sure to communicate your own as well. For example, one person might find a brief massage after a stressful day a loving mode of communication—while another might just want to talk over a hot cup of tea.

So much of our communication is transmitted by what we don’t say. Nonverbal cues—such as eye contact, leaning forward or away, or touching someone’s arm—communicate much more than words. For a relationship to work well, each person has to be receptive to sending and receiving nonverbal cues. Learning to understand this “body language” can help you better understand what your partner is trying to say. Think about what you are transmitting as well, and if what you say matches what you feel. If you say “I’m fine,” but you clench your teeth and look away, then your body is clearly signaling you are not.
Question your assumptions

If you’ve known each other for a while, you may assume that your partner has a pretty good idea of what you are thinking and what you need. However, your partner is not a mind reader. While your partner may have some idea, it is much healthier to directly express your needs to avoid any confusion. Your partner may sense something, but it might not be what you need. What’s more, people change, and what you needed and wanted five years ago, for example, may be very different now. Getting in the habit of expressing your needs helps you weather difficult times, which otherwise may lead to increasing resentment, misunderstanding, and anger.
Use your senses to keep stress in check

If you’re not calm and focused, you won’t be able to communicate effectively. The best way to reduce stress quickly and reliably is through the senses. But each person responds differently to sensory input, so you need to find things that are soothing to you.
Relationship advice tip 4: Healthy relationships are built on give and take

If you expect to get what you want 100% of a time in a relationship, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Healthy relationships are built on compromise, and it takes work on each person’s part to make sure that there is a reasonable exchange.
Recognize what’s important to your partner

Knowing what is truly important to your partner can go a long way towards building goodwill and an atmosphere of compromise. On the flip side, it’s also important for your partner to recognize your wants and for you to state them clearly. Constantly compromising your needs for others' will build resentment and anger.
Don’t make “winning” your goal

If you approach your partner with the attitude that things have to be your way or else, it will be difficult to reach a compromise. Sometimes this attitude comes from not having your needs met while you were younger, or it could be from years of accumulated resentment building up in your current relationship. It’s all right to have strong convictions about something, but your partner deserves to be heard as well. You are more likely to get your needs met if you respect what your partner needs, and compromise when you can.
Learn how to respectfully resolve conflict

Conflict is inevitable in any relationship, but to keep a relationship strong, both people need to feel they’ve been heard. The goal is not to win but to resolve the conflict with respect and love.

Make sure you are fighting fair.
Don’t attack someone directly; use “I” statements to communicate how you feel.
Don’t drag old arguments into the mix.
Keep the focus on the issue at hand, and respect the other person.

Relationship advice tip 5: Expect ups and downs
It’s also important to recognize that there are ups and downs in every relationship. You won’t always be on the same page. Sometimes one partner may be struggling with an issue that stresses them, such as the death of a close family member. Other events, like job loss or severe health problems, can affect both partners and make it difficult to relate to each other. You might have different ideas of managing finances or raising children. Different people cope with stress differently, and misunderstanding can rapidly turn to frustration and anger.
Relationship advice for getting through life’s ups and downs

Don’t take out your problems on your partner. Life stresses can make us short tempered. If you are coping with a lot of stress, it might seem easier to snap at your partner. Fighting like this might initially feel like a release, but it slowly poisons your relationship. Find other ways to vent your anger and frustration.
Some problems are bigger than both of you. Trying to force a solution can cause even more problems. Every person works through problems and issues in his or her own way. Remember that you’re a team. Continuing to move forward together can get you through the rough spots.
Be open to change. Change is inevitable in life, and it will happen whether you go with it or fight it. Flexibility is essential to adapt to the change that is always taking place in any relationship, and it allows you to grow together through both the good times and the bad.
Don’t ignore problems. Whatever problems arise in a romantic relationship, it’s important to face them together as a couple. If an aspect of the relationship stops working, don’t simply ignore it, but instead address it with your partner. Things change, so respond to them together as they do.

Romantic relationships require ongoing attention

Many couples focus on their relationship only when there are specific, unavoidable problems to overcome. Once the problems have been resolved they often switch their attention back to their careers, kids, or other interests. However, romantic relationships require ongoing attention and commitment for love to flourish. As long as the health of a romantic relationship remains important to you, it is going to require your attention and effort.

PoliticsCorruption Scandal Rocks Jonathan Campaign Committee by barx(op): 11:17am On Feb 24, 2015
The unit of the President Goodluck Jonathan campaign organisation responsible for mobilizing the civil society has been hit by a corruption scandal that has now paralysed its operations.

Members of the committee are divided over the leadership style of its chairman, Nick Eze, a professor.

They accused Mr. Eze of cornering the kick-off funds he received from the presidency and of sabotaging the entire campaign.

“As far as the presidential campaign organisation is concerned, the Civil Society committee is a fraud,” an aggrieved member told PREMIUM TIMES. “Professor Nick has abandoned his office and is now running the committee from his bedroom.”

Several members of the committee, who spoke with this newspaper, expressed frustration with Mr. Eze’s management of the committee.

“On one occasion, he called a meeting and we asked for accounts, he insulted us and said that he is a personal friend of the president and only reports to him directly,” another committee member said. “We are just committee members on paper.”

The committee is currently dormant as members appear disillusioned and too disgruntled to mobilize voters for the president.

A member of the committee, who said he stopped work since early February, claimed that highhandedness is widespread amongst other committees. He explained that the selfish interest of the committee chairman is the reason the president is going round by himself meeting with every group.

“Ordinarily, we should have done that for the president,” he said.

Mr. Eze dismissed the accusations. He said they were “unfounded” and coming from “jobless people.”

He blamed the opposition for sponsoring the “jobless people” making the accusations.

Troubled campaign

Troubles began when Mr. Eze bought a bulletproof Prado SUV, shortly after receiving the kick-off funds. Members of the committee, who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES, accused the professor of enriching himself with the funds rather than applying it to the campaigns.

They also claim that Mr. Eze cornered other cars meant for the committee and drove them down to his home in Enugu state, South East Nigeria, where he is currently hiding them. He is also accused of not letting money go round committee members and owing sitting allowances.

A committee member said Mr. Eze’s posturing is strenghtening claims that the PDP is almost always about “sharing money” even if its earmarked for public good.

PREMIUM TIMES understands that the crisis in the committee peaked early February when angered committee members protested alleged claim by Mr. Eze that he had spent N100 million in organising campaign events.

Some committee members challenged the claim, saying the less than 140 attendees at the events in Abuja and Lagos were drawn locally and paid N3,000 each in stipends.

Members of the committee subsequently complained to the National Campaign Adviser, Tony Anenih.

“He refused to show up after Anenih summoned him,” a member of the committee said. “He was later forced to appear before Anenih after police officers were used to bring him in.”

Several members of the committee now are now up in arms against Mr. Eze. Thursday last week, angered members of the committee planned a meeting to pass a vote of no confidence on him and demand his removal as well as a refund of all funds he had so far received.

Shortly before the meeting, Rufai Alkali, the special adviser to the president on political matters and a close friend of Mr. Eze, intervened.

The “temporary truce” was reached in Mr. Alkali’s office, members of the committee told PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Eze denied the meeting was over the scandal. He argued that only the chairman can summon meeting and that the absence of minutes from the Thursday meeting invalidates its existence.

“Committee members did not give me money,” he said in defence of accusations he is not accountable.

The no-confidence vote was stalled but committee members remain angered and are spoiling for fresh showdown with Mr. Eze.

The spokesperson for the Campaign, Femi Fani-Kayode, did not answer or return calls seeking his comments for this story.

CrimeBoko Haram: Generals Lead Battle As Effort To Capture Shekau Heightens by barx(op): 7:17am On Feb 23, 2015
Following the spate of recent successes recorded by troops against Boko Haram insurgents in the north eastern parts of the country, Nigerian troops have been put on red alert for any insurgents’ leader bearing the name of Imam Abubakar Shekau who is believed to be desperately looking for escape routes.

A senior military source however, informed PRNigeria that troops have been urged to try at all costs to capture Shekau alive so that he would face justice.

On at least two occasions now, troops have claimwd to have killed characters calling themselves Abubakar Shekau in videos but the insurgents have allegedly managed to find other individuals looking like him in pretense that the Boko Haram leader is still alive.

The order to catch Shekau alive is therefore to ensure that it will no longer be possible to resort to the same trick.

The rumour about Shekau’s invincibility is reportedly one of the factors that troops are afraid to confront the Boko Haram terrorists.

Meanwhile, troops’ morale has been greatly boosted in recent times by arrival of sophisticated armaments and the decision of senior military officers to lead the war against terror directly which also influenced the change of some commanders.

An intelligence sources disclosed that some of the successes recorded in recovery of big towns in the North-East were due to deployment of new strategies, improved disciplinary measures, and sincerity of participating countries in the regional alliance and the acquisitions of latest equipment.

In the past, Colonels have led direct attacks on Boko Haram in accordance with military tradition but because of the large scale desertions recorded, Military Generals then decided to directly lead the war and this has greatly boosted morale.

It was even learnt that many of the troops that earlier deserted have returned while others have expressed desire to return to the front.

Within a week of the massive operation, the troops have recovered Monguno, Marte, Gamboru Ngala, Dikwa among other big towns and several surrounding communities in Borno State from Boko Haram.

The source added that, “with acquisition of new equipment from various sources and the specialised training of the troops on guerrilla warfare, the military indirectly called the bluff of some deceptive western countries who are now trying to save face by claiming to work with our neighbours.

“The effective collaboration and mutual relationship with our neighbours is paying off as they now realise that inactions can pose disasters to their countries too,” he concluded.

CrimeINVESTIGATION: The Mystery Man Of Nigerias $182million Halliburton Bribery Scam by barx(op): 10:36pm On Feb 20, 2015
Who is Abu Shuaibu?
That is a question reporters from PREMIUM TIMES and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists have battled for months to unravel. They haven’t succeeded.
The man’s name keeps popping up like mushrooms in the leaked records from HSBC, a huge global bank based in London, which has now been exposed for its role in acting as conduit for bribes and other illicit businesses.
Just plug in Jeffrey Tesler into the data, obtained by the French newspaper Le Monde and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, and Mr. Shuaibu’s name will rush to the surface.
Mr. Tesler is the U.K. lawyer, who used a network of secretive banks and offshore tax havens to funnel $182 million in bribes to top Nigerian officials in exchange for a $6 billion contract to build Nigeria’s liquefied natural gas company.
The leaked file show strong financial ties between Mr. Tesler and Mr. Shuaibu, and suggested both, along with other Nigerian individuals, corporations and at least a political party, may have worked together while the U.K. lawyer was engaged in the infamous bribery scheme.
The HSBC files identify Mr. Shuaibu, along with retired General Chris Garuba (a former governor of Bauchi State, former Commandant of the National War College, and  former Commander of UN forces in Angola) and his wife Rita, as HSBC clients.
Their names are listed along with Mr. Tesler’s in an account named Bridlington Enterprises Limited, a Gibraltar-based shell company for which Mr. Tesler acted as attorney.
The records show that the account, for which Mr. Shuaibu was identified as beneficial owner, was opened the year before Mr. Tesler sent his first bribe payment to Switzerland, although the files do not show that Mr. Tesler transferred money into the Bridlington account, which held as much as $367,547 in 2006 or 2007.
But while Messrs Tesler, Chris and Rita Garuba are well known, very little is known about Mr. Shuaibu, although bank documents identify him as a real estate dealer  and consistently gave his address as P.O. Box 53322, Ikoyi WAN-Lagos.
Yet it was the 65-year-old who effectively ran Bridlington’s accounts, repeatedly visiting HSBC in Switzerland, and making several withdrawals in cash. On one occasion – on November 11, 2005 – he visited the bank to request a transfer of 600,000 U.S. dollars. It is not clear to whom the money was sent.
The leaked files have provided fresh insight into Nigerians who worked with or had link with Mr. Tesler while he wired bribes to Nigerian officials.
Investigators in Nigeria and the United States, who investigated what is now infamously known as the Halliburton bribery scam, were unable to identify Mr. Shuaibu, the Garubas and another individual, Andrew Agom (a senior government official and chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, (who was killed in an attack on a motorcade), as business associates of Mr. Tesler.
But the HSBC files have clearly established the financial links between the individuals.
However, our efforts in the past months to track down Mr. Shuaibu or establish his real identity have so far been unsuccessful. The Abu Shuaibus we ended up identifying and contacting turned out to be different from that of Mr. Tesler’s record.
The Garubas, who could have provided a clue – since they shared ownership of Bridlington with him – did not respond to requests for comments by ICIJ and PREMIUM TIMES.
At 6.25p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, Rita, who runs the Abuja-based law firm, Temple Chambers, answered the phone but abruptly terminated the call after listening to our enquiry. She did not answer subsequent calls.
Mr. Tesler too did not respond to ICIJ’s requests for comment.

Mr. Tesler was sentenced to 21 months in prison and he forfeited $149 million from his Swiss accounts to the U.S. government for serving as the go-between for bribes paid to secure contracts for KBR, the former Halliburton subsidiary, and the other consortium members, the Japanese firm JGC Corporation, Paris-based Technip, as well as Italy’s ENI S.p.A. and its Dutch subsidiary Snamprogetti Netherlands B.V.
The forfeited money is still to be paid.
Between 2009 and 2011, the consortium members paid penalties totaling more than $1.5 billion for their role in the bribery scheme. Two KBR officials who had worked with Mr. Tesler, Wojciech Chodan and Albert (Jack) Stanley, KBR’s former chairman and CEO, were sentenced to one year of probation and 30 months in prison, respectively.
Dick Cheney.
Mr. Cheney had been chairman and chief executive of Halliburton, the parent company of KBR, for five years — from 1995 to 2000 — before becoming U.S. vice-president in 2001.
Mr. Cheney’s lawyer has asserted repeatedly that his client was not involved. “The Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission investigated that joint venture extensively and found no suggestion of any impropriety by Dick Cheney in his role of CEO of Halliburton,” attorney Terrence O’Donnell wrote in a 2010 statement to the Associated Press.
Meanwhile, Tesler, now 66, has served his sentence and returned to England, where he told authorities he would “spend the last few years, which God may graciously grant me, to seek forgiveness.”
In Nigeria, anti-corruption campaigners continue to call on authorities to identify and prosecute Nigerian citizens involved in the scandal. While never publicly released, a 2010 Nigerian government document reportedly included three Nigerian presidents, a vice-president, a minister, intelligence chiefs and corporate titans in a list of bribery beneficiaries. The report did not name the Garubas, and Messrs Agom and Shuaibu.
“In terms of the personalities and the amount of money involved, it is probably the biggest scandal in Nigeria’s history,” Dauda Garuba, Nigeria coordinator at the Natural Resource Governance Institute, said in an interview with ICIJ. (Dauda Garuba has no connection to the Garuba family in the HSBC files.)
“But although we’ve seen the indictment and conviction of foreign companies and their top executives in Europe and America,” Mr. Garuba said, “Nigeria’s own government has not taken action in the very country in which the corruption took place.”

Investigation revealed that the discovery was made a day after the world celebrated the famous Saint Valentine’s Day, at Okwu village.

An eyewitness, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, told Vanguard that a close look at the lady’s corpse revealed bruises, especially around the breasts and private parts.

Although the witness did not completely rule out what he called a brutal gang-rape of the girl, he could not, however, identify the victim or give her actual age.

The witness said: “I am not too sure that it was a case of ritual killing because no part of the girl, on the face value, was missing.

“It is, to me, a case of brutal gang-raping to death of the unfortunate girl.”

Speaking also on the issue, the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Leo Nwokocha, said the identity of the dead lady was still unknown.

According to the royal father, police stormed the scene soon after getting wind of the incident and removed the corpse.

The traditional ruler said he had no doubts that the police and other security agencies were on top of the situation, with a view to ascertaining who the perpetrators were and making them to face the full weight of the law.

The body of the girl had been moved to the morgue of Aboh Mbaise General Hospital.

No police officer at Aboh Mbaise Divisional Police Headquarters was prepared to speak on the issue, but only referred Vanguard to the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem.

CrimeBricklayer Hacks Neighbour To Death Over Generator Fumes by barx(op): 9:01am On Feb 16, 2015
29-year-old bricklayer, Ibrahim Tijani, has hacked to death his neighbour, Bashorun Okanla, for complaining about fumes emanating from his generator.

The incident happened in the Okun Ajah, Ogombo area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect, an indigene of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and the deceased lived in an uncompleted building.

On the fateful day, Tijani was said to have turned on his generator around 11am, while the fumes escaped into the room of the 57-year-old carpenter.

Okanla, who was married with kids, was said to have cautioned Tijani and later, an argument started between them.

The argument was said to have degenerated into a fight and in the ensuing brawl, the suspect picked a cutlass from his room and cut the victim in the hand and leg.

He was rushed to a hospital in the area where he reportedly gave up the ghost.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, said the police from the Ogombo division recovered the cutlass used in committing the crime.

He said, “It was on February 8, 2015 around 11am. The suspect and the deceased were neighbours. They both lived in an uncompleted building, which I learnt was owned by a Nigerian based in the USA.

“Tijani turned on his generator and the fumes escaped into the room of Okanla, who dashed out and asked him to take away the generator from the place, but he refused. That was how they began fighting and dragged themselves into the bush.

“The man then picked a sharp cutlass and cut the deceased in the hand and leg and ran away.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect ran to the Ogombo Police Station to evade the wrath of residents.

They were said to have followed him there and told the police what had happened, leading to Tijani’s arrest.

It was learnt that Tijani, when interrogated by the police, confessed to the crime, adding that he had had a misunderstanding with the deceased before the incident.

He said, “On Sunday, I turned on my generator and when Baba Ade (Okanla) asked me to turn it off, I refused. Then he used a stick to hit me and we started fighting.

“A neighbour came and separated us and asked me to sit down beside him. But Baba Ade still went and destroyed my generator. I became angry and went inside my house and picked my cutlass. I used it on him.”

Our correspondent learnt that the deceased’s corpse had been deposited in a mortuary.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said the police had started investigation into the case.

He said, “Confirmed. Case transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation for further investigation.”

CrimeNyako's Son Arrested By EFCC by barx(op): 8:11pm On Feb 13, 2015
Two weeks after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, declared former Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako and his son, Abdul-Aziz, wanted, operatives of the anti- graft agency, Friday morning arrested the younger Nyako in Gombe, Gombe State.
A statement by the spokesperson of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said he was immediately flown to Abuja, where he is currently being grilled by a crack team of detectives who had been working on the Adamawa investigation for several months.
Abdul-Aziz, who was declared wanted by the EFCC in the case of stealing, abuse of office and money laundering, is currently being interrogated over alleged illicit funds traced to companies in which he has interest.
Specifically, he is being asked to explain how over N15billion funds belonging to Adamawa State was allegedly laundered into the accounts of five companies said to owned by him- Blue Opal Nigeria Limited, Crust Energy Nigeria Limited, Blue Ribbon Multilinks Limited, Tower Assets Management Limited and Blue Ribbon Bureau De Change.
The funds was allegedly funnelled into the accounts of the companies from Adamawa state accounts domiciled in a new generation bank by the account officer who incidentally is the manager and an in-law to Ex-governor Nyako.
The EFCC said the manager claimed he transferred the funds through verbal instruction from the former governor for purposes that were not stated.
The commission said its investigations revealed that from 2007 to 2011, then Governor Nyako directed that all state-owned accounts domiciled in various banks be transferred to the new generation bank .
Abdul-Aziz’s company, Blue Opal, is said to own, among other investments in Nigeria, an estate in Abuja, while his father’s account officer owns several properties and investments scattered around Abuja, Yola and Kano.
