Champions League last 16: Liverpool v Inter Milan
Venue: Anfield Date: Tuesday, 8 March Kick-off: 20:00 GMT

Liverpool's Roberto Firmino, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip have all returned to training after missing games through injury and illness.

Defender Matip and Spain midfielder Thiago could feature when the Reds host Inter Milan in the Champions League last-16 second leg at Anfield.

Boss Jurgen Klopp suggested Brazil forward Firmino might need a few more days training before he returns.

Liverpool established a 2-0 first-leg lead in Italy on 16 February.

Firmino, 30, scored Liverpool's first goal in Milan but he has not played since because of a groin injury.

The 30-year-old Matip has not featured since the Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea because of illness and Thiago, also 30, was injured in the warm-up at Wembley.

'We are not a team who defends results'
Despite his side establishing a healthy lead from the trip to Milan, Klopp is taking nothing for granted against the Serie A champions.

Liverpool struck twice in the final 15 minutes in a tough encounter against Inter, with Mohamed Salah also on target.

"They don't come here as tourists," said the Liverpool boss.

"I know that they want to chase the game - that's what we want to do because we are not a team who defends results."

Having secured the EFL Cup, Liverpool are in the hunt for four trophies at the business end of the season.

They are six points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City, but have a game in hand and meet Pep Guardiola's side at Etihad Stadium on 10 April.

In addition, the Reds are in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Manchester United: Players Increasingly Concerned By Managerial Uncertainty by Bashi32(op): 5:50pm On Mar 07, 2022
Manchester United's players are becoming increasingly concerned at the managerial void at Old Trafford as their season continues to unravel.

United's 4-1 loss at Manchester City on Sunday was only their second defeat under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

However, they have won just eight of the German's 18 games in charge, including none of the last three.

Meanwhile, BBC Sport also understands England striker Marcus Rashford is unsure of his Old Trafford future.

Manchester City outclass Manchester United in derby
'Phil Foden sets the tempo' - how City 'steamrollered' United
Rashford still wants to play for United and has another full season left on his contract - plus the option to extend until 2024.

But the 24-year-old, who started yesterday's game on the bench despite the absences of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani, feels his career has stalled and is concerned his international prospects will be damaged if the situation fails to improve.

In addition, it is hard to see Ronaldo, 37, wanting to stay for a second season if United fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Rangnick admitted to United's own media channels that his side 'can almost not drop any more points' over their final 10 games if they are to secure a top-four berth.

Considering their run-in includes trips to Liverpool and Arsenal, plus home games against Tottenham on Saturday and then Chelsea on 15 May, getting maximum points will not be easy.

United know a failure to secure a place in next season's Champions League will hamper their chances of trying to sign new players - or persuade others to stay, such as France midfielder Paul Pogba, who is out of contract in the summer.

While United's players understand much of the responsibility for the current predicament lies with them, there is also a belief they are not being helped by the extended period without a permanent manager and lack of clarity over who will eventually succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked on 21 November.

Paris St-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax's Erik ten Hag remain the frontrunners for the post. Last week, United's football director John Murtough said a 'thorough process' was underway and it is understood that is advancing.

However, both men have contracts until 2023 and crucial Champions League last 16 second-leg ties looming, so direct communication at this stage would seem unlikely.

The situation is adding to a general air of uncertainty around Old Trafford, with numerous players becoming disenchanted with life at the club.

Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Cavani are almost certain to leave when their contracts expire in the summer. There is uncertainty too over the futures of goalkeeper Dean Henderson, defender Eric Bailly, plus Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek, who are currently on loan at Sevilla and Everton.

Speaking after the defeat by Premier League leaders Manchester City, midfielder Scott McTominay said accusations by former players Roy Keane and Gary Neville that United gave up at the Etihad were "incredibly disappointing".

"I have nothing to say about problems [at the club]," McTominay told Sky Sports. "It's not my place to say anything. We have a big end to the season coming up and we need to get in the Champions League. That's all I'm thinking about.

"Whatever goes on behind the scenes is completely irrelevant to me. Obviously I'm part of it, but you have to concentrate on your own game. You can get too distracted by all the things that are going on at the football club.

"We have to stick together. We can't let something like this be so damaging to us that we lack confidence going into the next game."

What has happened to Maguire? Man Utd's disastrous defence laid bare in derby defeat

The Red Devils were beaten 4-1 by Manchester City on Sunday as the club's under-fire captain struggled throughout at the Etihad Stadium

Match statistics: Manchester City 4-1 Manchester United

Whenever Ralf Rangnick has been asked about Manchester United's defence in recent weeks, he has been able to produce statistics suggesting that they are improving under his management.

No stats can hide what happened in Sunday's Manchester derby, thought

United were torn apart at times by Manchester City, succumbing to a 4-1 defeat that leaves them outside of the Premier League's top four, a point behind Arsenal despite having played three games more than the Gunners.

The display by United's defence was so bad, it posed the question of whether they should reconsider their transfer priorities for the summer so as to bolster their backline.

It has become norm to see Pep Guardiola’s side dominate derbies, even if United have emerged victorious from the Etihad Stadium on a number of occasions, but this was a performance that verged on embarrassing by the end.

“You’re f*cking sh*t” rang out from the home fans after Riyad Mahrez volleyed in from the edge of the area to make it 3-1, and to be fair to the supporters, they were not wrong.

United had started the game promisingly. Without Cristiano Ronaldo, who missed out with a hip injury, Rangnick deployed a striker-less system, with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes operating as false nines.

But instead of the forwards firing blanks in Ronaldo's absence, it was his side's porous defence that will have left Rangnick scratching his head for answers.

Amid reports that his team-mates have questioned whether he should be in the team, Harry Maguire put in one of his worst performances in a United shirt.

Raphael Varane was unavailable here due to testing positive for Covid-19, meaning Rangnick had little choice than to select his club captain, but Maguire’s display at the Etihad will do nothing to convince any doubters that he is the answer for United at the back.

The still images after Kevin De Bruyne had scored his and City's second of the afternoon showed United defenders strewn on the ground, with Maguire among them.

The England international, who just a few months ago was one of the star performers at Euro 2020, had embarrassed himself in the build-up, as instead of clearing the ball after David de Gea had parried Phil Foden's shot, Maguire let it go through his legs so City could provide a finish.

Maguire lacked composure, was static in his defending, slow to react and - at times - rash. When he was shown a yellow card by Michael Oliver for needlessly hauling down De Bruyne on the break in the second half, there would have been some mean-spirited United fans hoping he was about to be put out of his misery and be sent off.

City are so good they do not need a helping hand to secure victory, but the rest of United’s backline seemed determined to assist.

Victor Lindelof was undone by a majestic piece of Foden skill in the build-up to City's second goal, and the Sweden international looked nervy and slow next to Maguire. For a partnership that cost £110 million, they do not look capable of leading United back to the top any time soon.

The same can be said of Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Fred was so frustrated with the right-back's performance that he could be seen clapping repeatedly towards his team-mate during the second half in a bid to either offer encouragement or try

Guardiola knew from the first whistle United would be weak down the right, and that is where City got all their joy. Their first goal came from some nice interplay down that side, and by the second half they were toying with Wan-Bissaka.

Jack Grealish had the beating of the full-back for the whole game, and Diogo Dalot must wonder what he has to do to get another chance.

Whether that would be enough to shore up United is unlikely. They have conceded 38 goals in the Premier League this season; only Southampton and Leicester City have let in more among the top 13 sides in the table, while Burnley in the relegation zone have only been breached 36 times.

Article continues below
As much as there are issues to resolve both up front and in midfield, it is becoming clearer and clearer that defensive reinforcements are required this summer.

Rangnick said in his pre-match press conference that United could learn from Liverpool and Manchester City by having a "clear transfer strategy".

After watching them concede four against City with a four-man defence that cost around £180m, he could not be more right.

SportsReal Madrid Go Eight Clear With Comeback by Bashi32(op): 2:50am On Mar 06, 2022
Real Madrid go eight clear with comeback

Real Madrid came from behind to beat Real Sociedad and go eight points clear at the top of La Liga.

The visitors led through a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty after 10 minutes with what would prove to be their only shot.

Eduardo Camavinga and Luka Modric scored brilliant goals from long range for Madrid in quick succession.

Karim Benzema, who had two goals disallowed, scored a penalty and substitute Marco Asensio sealed the win from Dani Carvajal's cut-back.

France veteran Benzema, who is La Liga's top scorer, has scored 20 league goals for the fourth campaign in a row.

It looked as if his luck was out when he had a goal ruled out seconds after Camavinga's opener - and then another in the second half by the video assistant referee - both for offside.

But the VAR ended up helping him score when it gave a spot-kick for a foul on Vinicius Jr which Benzema coolly slotted home.

Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid, who have not lost a home game in La Liga this season, took advantage of second-placed Sevilla drawing 0-0 at Alaves on Friday.

Real Sociedad, who would have gone third with a win, remain sixth in the table

Manchester derby: Manchester City and Manchester United meet at Etihad Stadium

Manchester City host neighbours Manchester United on Sunday in a derby that could have a big bearing on the Premier League title race - as well as the scramble to finish in the top four.

Pep Guardiola's leaders are three points clear of nearest rivals Liverpool after the Reds' 1-0 win against West Ham on Saturday.

When asked about the Manchester derby following that game at Anfield, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said "of course we are interested in it".

If City lose on Sunday, Liverpool would have the chance to go top of the Premier League next weekend, when they play on Saturday and their rivals do not play until the Monday.

With 11 games left, United have 47 points - 19 fewer than City's 66 - and are fourth in the table with a two-point cushion over fifth-placed West Ham, but Arsenal are a place further back and have three games in hand on United.

"We are playing against one of the best teams in the world," said United's interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

"In the end it is about controlling the game, not letting them play and have the ball without pressure. That is what they are always looking for.

"We are fully aware of how they want to play. It is about putting them under pressure and taking the ball off them. Some teams have done that over the past few weeks."

Guardiola said City, who will be without defender Ruben Dias for up to six weeks, need to win "almost all the games" they have left to be champions.

"If we lose this game and win the Premier League, I would sign for that right now," added the City boss.

"It's not the cup where you lose and it's over. We have to try to do what we can, but I don't look at the table and them [United] being 19 points behind.

"I see them as a good side and that's all."

A key moment in the title race?
City are chasing a fourth title in five seasons and were 14 points clear of Liverpool after beating Chelsea on 15 January, although Guardiola's side had played two games more.

City entertain Liverpool on 10 April, but the only other team in the Premier League's current top six they have to play is West Ham away on the penultimate weekend of the campaign on 15 May.

While City are chasing success on three fronts - Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League - United can only dream of such lofty ambitions right now.

They have not won the league since 2013 and, despite re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo and spending £73m on Jadon Sancho, they are locked in a six-club race - featuring Chelsea, West Ham, Arsenal, Tottenham and Wolves - for the third and fourth Champions League spots after an inconsistent campaign.

They entertain Spurs on 12 March and are at Arsenal on 23 April. In addition, the Red Devils still have to play Chelsea, who currently sit third, on the penultimate weekend of the season.

City's miserable home record against their rivals
For all that City have been Manchester's dominant force over the past decade, they have not had too much to celebrate when hosting United in recent seasons, with the red half of Manchester winning 11 of their 21 games against the Blues at the stadium they moved to from Maine Road in 2003.

Guardiola's side have lost their past three league and cup home games against United.

City's most recent home win over United was November 2018, although they did beat their neighbours at Old Trafford this season.

What's changed since they last met?
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge of United when City cruised to a 2-0 victory in a one-sided game at Old Trafford in November.

Eric Bailly turned Joao Cancelo's cross into his own net after seven minutes before Bernardo Silva took advantage of awful defending from Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw to steal in on another Cancelo cross at the far post.

Solskjaer was critical of his side's abject performance and said afterwards: "You want to see a better Manchester United than that.

"This was a big step back. Players are human beings. We have to come out against Watford like a proper, hurt animal."

Solskjaer lasted one more match before he was sacked after a 4-1 defeat at Watford.

United have taken 26 points in Rangnick's first 13 league games in charge. It would have been more but for frustrating draws against Watford, Southampton, Burnley, Aston Villa and Newcastle.

A fourth successive United win over City at Etihad Stadium, however, will lift the mood for the all-important run-in.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Real Madrid Laboured To Victory Over Struggling Alaves To Move 7 Points Clear by Bashi32(op): 11:35pm On Feb 19, 2022
Real Madrid laboured to victory over struggling Alaves to move seven points clear at the top of La Liga.

Carlo Ancelotti's side failed to create any clear-cut chances in the first half but broke the deadlock on 63 minutes through Marco Asensio's curling strike.

The home fans showed their displeasure for much of the game, but Vinicius Jr grabbed a second from close range following a slick team move.

And striker Karim Benzema converted an injury-time penalty for Real's third.

Relive Real Madrid's win over Alaves
Alaves should have taken a shock lead but Pere Pons struck wide after rounding Thibaut Courtois and the goal empty.

But when Asensio curled home a stunning opening goal, the Spain international put his finger to his lips urging the crowd to get behind the team rather than jeer them.

Vinicius Jr then saw a low shot kept out by Fernando Pacheco and Benzema's follow-up was cleared off the line, but the Brazilian striker finished off a fine passing sequence for the second in the 80th minute.

Benzema scuffed a shot against the post but converted from the spot late on after Rodrygo was tripped inside the box.

Alaves, meanwhile, had opportunities themselves but Jason fired over from the centre of the area and Luis Rioja struck straight at Courtois.

Real lost their Champions League last-16 first-leg tie against Paris St-Germain on Tuesday and will see their advantage at the summit cut to four points again if second-placed Sevilla beat Espanyol on Sunday.

Son Heung-min and Harry Kane cemented their reputation as one of the Premier League's most successful forward partnerships on Saturday, as Tottenham regained the lead against Manchester City.

The pair combined to allow Kane to score in the second half at the Etihad Stadium with the game poised at 1-1.

Kane in particular had reason to celebrate, with his strike putting an end to a lengthy drought against Pep Guardiola's
Just under an hour had been played at the Etihad when Tottenham, who had gone ahead early through Dejan Kulusevski prior to Ilkay Gundogan's equaliser, went back ahead.

A flowing move out from the back landed at Son's feet, and the South Korea international swung a cross into the penalty area to leave Kane with the simplest of finishes.

It was the 36th goal that Son or Kane have assisted for the other, matching a Premier League record.

Kane, who was close to leaving Spurs for City in the summer, also broke his own rotten run of form against the club.

Not since 2016 had the England star netted against the Citizens, having gone nine matches without troubling the scorers in the interim.

Spurs went on to win the match 3-2, with City's dropped points giving the chasing pack hope in the Premier League title race.

Harry Kane's stoppage-time goal gave Tottenham a stunning victory over Premier League leaders Manchester City in a chaotic finale at Etihad Stadium.

City thought they had rescued a point moments earlier when Riyad Mahrez converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review, but there was another twist to come and Kane, predictably, provided it.

The Spurs striker, whom City had tried to sign in the summer, rose highest to nod home Dejan Kulusevski's cross in the 95th minute and spark wild celebrations from the travelling fans.

It was a dramatic end to a pulsating match that had already seen Spurs pegged back twice, with City running out of time to find a third equaliser.

Tottenham's first goal came after only four minutes, with Son Heun-min beating the offside trap and squaring the ball for Kulusevski to score on his first start for the club.

City levelled when Hugo Lloris spilled Raheem Sterling's cross and Ilkay Gundogan pounced to turn in the loose ball, but they could not turn their possession into more goals.

Spurs continued to threaten on the break in the second half and were back in front on the hour mark when Kane finished a move he had started, running onto Son's cross to fire past Ederson from close range.

Kane was denied again by Ederson and then had another strike ruled out for offside but it appeared City would have the last word when they were awarded a spot-kick at the end of the 90 minutes.

Referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot for a handball by Cristian Romero after a VAR review and it seemed Mahrez had salvaged a point.

Kane had other ideas, and his winner means City's lead at the top over Liverpool, who have a game in hand, is down to six points.

Kane shows why Guardiola tried to sign him
Kane has been below his best for much of the season but his performance here was a reminder of why City boss Pep Guardiola was so keen to sign him at the start of the season.

The Spurs captain did not just score twice, he was the key man in his side's gameplan, constantly dropping deep to collect the ball and finding willing runners ahead of him.

It was a display that also demonstrated why Spurs chairman Daniel Levy fought so hard to keep his side's talisman.

Kane was absent and seemed set on a move to the Etihad when Tottenham beat City on the opening day of the season. This time, it was the same result but he was the main man.

His side's fans serenaded their captain at the final whistle, singing "Harry Kane, he's one of our own" as he and his team-mates celebrated a famous victory in front of the travelling supporters.

Tottenham had lost their previous three league games and slid down the table, but this win reignites their bid for a top-four finish, and in style.

Guardiola gamble does not pay off
This was City's first league defeat since October, when they lost at home to Crystal Palace, yet they did not play badly against Spurs - instead this goes down as a masterclass from Spurs boss Antonio Conte.

Guardiola gambled by continuing to play with a high line against a manager known for orchestrating quick breakaways and, this time, he lost.

For long spells all of City's players were camped in Tottenham's half, probing for a weakness.

All it took for Tottenham was to win the ball back and, usually via Kane, they would trigger a lightning counter-attack.

It was a tactic that led to Spurs' first two goals but the biggest sucker-punch was saved for last, with Conte's side finding the winner when most people in the Etihad were expecting a charge from the home side.

Qatar World Cup 2022: Belgium boss Roberto Martinez predicts 'best tournament seen'

Roberto Martinez will be hoping to lead Belgium to World Cup glory in Qatar
Belgium manager Roberto Martinez believes this year's World Cup in Qatar may prove to be one of the best ever.

The tournament is usually held in summer, but will take place from 21 November to 18 December when temperatures will be a little cool

"I think this could be the best World Cup or international tournament that we have seen just because the physical level of the players will be at an optimum.

"Everyone will be within 1,000 playing minutes having been just a few weeks after the start of the season - this is the perfect moment for players to go and play for their national team."

Martinez's side are one of the favourites to win this year's World Cup, which is likely to be the final chance for Belgium's so-called 'golden generation' to claim a major trophy.

The decision to host the tournament in Qatar has received plenty of criticism because of concerns over the country's human rights record.
