There has been speculation about an incident where Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was prevented from attending Buhari’s meeting with the National Security Adviser because of security reasons by the President. Reacting to this report, the SSA to President Buhari on Media Garba Shehu said, “That is the creation of someone who just wanted to write something. It was on the same day he travelled to Sudan to represent the President, the government and the people of Nigeria at the inauguration of the president of that country. “He couldn’t have been present in two places at the same time. Osinbajo is the Vice-President of Nigeria. In the absence of the President, he is the President. So, there cannot be dark corners into which he will not be allowed. It is not true.” Speaking on the National Assembly crisis, the presidential spokesperson expressed conviction that the party with the majority, the All Progressives Congress, and the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, would coexist harmoniously. http://ngupdate247.com/in-the-absence-of-the-president-he-is-the-president-ssa-on-buhariosinbajo-meeting-saga/ On Tuesday, against the directive of the APC, Senator Bukola Saraki was elected unopposed as President of the 8th Senate. Fifty-one senators, include the party’s preferred candidate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, were absent. Saraki and Lawan have been engaged in a fierce contest to clinch the Senate top job. The other senators were at the International Conference Centre, on the invitation of Buhari, who had called the meeting to resolve the National Assembly leadership crisis, at the time Saraki was declared Senate President. Speculation had trailed Buhari’s absence at a peace meeting, with some arguing that Buhari favoured Saraki. However, Shehu said, “It is a matter of courtesy that the office of the President would be given that respect. The PDP, which issued a statement saying the delay had embarrassed the country, should be asked: How many times have they suspended the plenary of the National Assembly, either the Senate or the House of Representatives, to go into the PDP caucus? “A party needs to meet to organise itself and it can’t be taken for granted. Buhari could not have failed in wanting to meet his party members in order to convey an important message to them. And he has not allowed that chance because at the time when he was setting out to go, the National Assembly they had begun voting, hence the mission was aborted. “The fact that he said he would work with the National Assembly (leadership) is consistent with his position as a principled democrat. It is a body recognized by law that is independent of his control. He cannot control them. They carried out a constitutional process and he will work with them.

Abuja – The wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, has appealed to governments at all levels to ensure fair representation of women in appointments. She made the appeal on Saturday night when she hosted Nigerian women and youths to an appreciation dinner for their support toward her husband’s victory in the last general election. The dinner held at the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Mrs Buhari expressed concern that the number of elected women in governance had reduced drastically in this new dispensation, saying that National and State Assemblies are the worst hit. “This is not fair; we are not asking for equal representation but fair representation in governance. “We must all make case for the fair representation of women and other challenges facing them especially the high rate of divorcees in the North and harmful widowhood practices in some part of the South East The wife of the president expressed regret that the rate of divorce among young women is a major setback, stressing that something has to be done to check the trend. “Also, the issue of sexual harassment of female students in our tertiary institutions must be checked.” She called for the speedy implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act. Mrs Buhari also dispelled the rumour that she was kept in the purdah (Islamic seculation) by her husband during the last Presidential campaigns. She said it was her personal decision not to come out for campaign because she needed to take care of the home front while her husband was in the field campaigning. “It was Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who talked me into it before I decided to join the train. “I have never been in purdah since I got married to my husband. “My husband is a very gender sensitive man with many daughters. “He even allowed me to go to school and to cut the long matter short, he is the pillar of my success.” Also speaking, the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, thanked the women for their support and urged them to continue to promote national unity. “Nigerians are people with strong faith; we as women must wake up and defend its unity. “It is time for us to stop fragmenting this country; Nigeria needs something new. “A new Nigeria means a new You,” Mrs Osinbajo said. Earlier, the APC Women Leader, Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani, said that the party leadership must ensure that they deliver on the change they had promised Nigerians. She said the dinner was meant to appreciate those who made the change possible by touring all parts of the country to campaign for the party’s victory. Former Rivers state governor, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, who was also the Director-General of the Buhari/Osinbajo Presidential Campaign Organisation, was the Chairman of the occasion. Other dignitaries were wife of the President of the Senate, Mrs Toyin Saraki; wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Gimbia Dogara. The rest were wife of the National Chairman of the APC, Mrs Victoria Odigie-Oyegun; wives of APC state governors and APC female deputy governors as well as wives of former governors. The APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was represented at the occasion by Sen. Babafemi Ojudu. Fresh revelation emerged Thursday over the ongoing controversy surrounding the victory of former Senate President, David Mark in the Benue South Senatorial District election as INEC card readers have detected more ghost voters. DAILY POST reports that the national and state Assembly tribunal in Benue State had authorized the senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Benue South senatorial zone, Comrade Daniel Onjeh and his party to inspect and take the electoral materials of the last senatorial election in the area. Onjeh contested the senate seat of the Benue South senatorial district against the senate President, David Mark of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Mark was however pronounced winner of the poll, which was allegedly marred by irregularities. Earlier, the card reader had detected 18, 424 ghost voters during the exercise. A statement issued by Onjeh’s media office says, “new INEC CTC Card Reader info we got yesterday, shows that only 87, 819 voters were actually accredited at the April 28 general election in Benue South; 58, 607 were manually accredited. “Against the total of 166, 633 fraudulently recorded by PDP and the INEC Makurdi earlier, Card Reader reveals that both failed and successful incidents of accreditation was 146, 426. Thus, aside other irregularities, 20, 207 Ghost voters were automatically detected! Presumably, if Onjeh’s 50, 115 votes is subtracted from 87, 819 = 37,704 for David Mark.” http://dailypost.ng/2015/06/12/benue-south-fresh-trouble-for-david-mark-as-inec-card-reader-detects-more-ghost-voters/ |
