BY LEKE ADESERI, South West Regional Editor LAGOS—Vanguard can authoritatively reveal that barring last minute changes, Governor Rauf Aregbesola will present the list of his cabinet members to the State House of Assembly tomorrow. When contacted on the issue yesterday, the Director of Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, said; “it is not unlikely but I have not discussed the issue with his excellency.” According to him; “He, the governor, has been extremely busy since he came in yesterday, so the discussion on the matter has not taken place.” Proposed cabinet Although the shape of the proposed cabinet is still very sketchy, usually reliable party sources said there will be between 12 and 17 commissioners and their choice will cut across various interests like party loyalists and technocrats Governor, Aregbesola, earlier fingered unsuccessful attempt to truncate and emasculate his administration early this year through an aborted impeachment plan by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for his cautious approach in constituting his cabinet. Speaking through Okanlawon then, the governor lashed out at the Peoples Democratic Party whose leaders he described as corrupt, for scheming to upstage him shortly after he was sworn into office last year. In a statement issued in Osogbo, Okanlawon explained that Aregbesola had not yet constituted his cabinet in view of the attempt to use the state House of Assembly to remove him from office shortly after he was sworn into office. He also cited the unfriendly posture of the legislature when a list of caretaker committees for the 30 local councils was submitted to it for approval as among reasons for the cautious tread. His words: “Nigerians cannot forget the evil intention of the PDP controlled House of Assembly shortly after Aregbesola’s assumption of office in November 2010. The attempt to remove the governor, through the instrument of the legislature, the obstinate posture of the House over the list of caretaker committees of local government councils submitted to it and other clandestine moves were enough indications that all the PDP was out to achieve was manacle the Aregbesola administration to prevent any records of performance.” With this scenario, Okanlawon explained further that political expediency dictated that the governor and his modest team continue delivering quality services to the people while awaiting a more conducive time to appoint his commissioners. The PDP, had hardly allowed the newly inaugurated Osun State House of Assembly to settle down barely two weeks before it went to town crying foul over non-appointment of commissioners, the statement added. Meantime, the governor himself lashed out at critics over his non-constitution of a cabinet seven months after he assumed office. He said the opposition lacks the credibility to fault his government after they allegedly failed to serve the people well for over seven years. Aregbesola, who responded personally for the first time on the controversial issue, said what the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) achieved during its governor’s tenure could not be matched with the successes recorded by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in seven months. The PDP had consistently criticized Aregbesola for his failure to put a cabinet in place seven months after he came to power and offered to select commissioner nominees capable of making the list from the ACN fold. He said the comments by the opposition on his administration were misplaced agenda, pointing out that “it is ironical that the same people who allegedly misled people in the state could turn round to condemn a performing administration. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/07/seven-months-after-aregbesola-submits-cabinet-list-tomorrow/ |
