Politics › Re: Why Obidients Are Very Insulting By Soibi Versatile by Basic123: 10:25am On Jun 11
Dailymemoirs4:
Why Obidients are very insultive

By Soibi Versatile

Presidential election aspirant Peter Gregory Obi has gained nationwide popularity since his decision to contest for the top office in 2023. Obi, who was formerly a vice presidential candidate to Atiku Abubakar in 2019, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, due to internal wrangling connected to the 2022 presidential primaries. Obi left for the Labour Party and clinched the ticket to run, forming a strong online base called the "Obidient movement".

The rise of the Obidient movement in Nigeria’s political space has been accompanied by a pattern of online aggression and physical confrontations that has defined its public image. While every political group has a fringe, the tone and frequency of insults, threats, and mob action associated with many Obidients stand out in the current cycle. Understanding why this behavior has become a hallmark requires looking at the movement’s structure, communication culture, and political grievances.

The movement was largely built on social media platforms where anonymity and virality reward outrage. Twitter, WhatsApp groups, and Facebook pages became the primary organizing tools during the 2023 elections. In that environment, clout is gained through hot takes, call-outs, and ratioing opponents. Nuance does not trend. As a result, a culture developed where insulting perceived enemies of Peter Obi was treated as proof of loyalty and common sense. The algorithm amplified the loudest voices, and those voices set the tone for thousands of younger followers who equated aggression with activism.

The Obidient base is fueled by deep frustration with the Nigerian state. Many supporters are young, educated, and unemployed or underemployed, and from a region that has not held power since 1966. They see the political class as a cartel that has stolen their future. That anger is legitimate, but without traditional party structures to moderate messaging, the anger often finds expression in personal attacks. When political discourse is framed as a moral war between good and evil, opponents are not just wrong. They become enemies deserving of ridicule, doxxing, and harassment. The moral certainty removes restraint.

The movement lacks a centralized leadership that can enforce discipline. Peter Obi himself has repeatedly called for civility, but the Obidient label was crowdsourced. Anyone with a phone could claim it. This decentralized model was powerful for mobilization but created no mechanism for sanctioning members who cross lines. Without party elders, ward chairmen, or a formal code of conduct, there is no internal cost for being insultive. In fact, those who attack prominent critics often gain followers and donations, creating a perverse incentive.

The 2023 election aftermath entrenched a siege mentality. A large portion of Obidients believe the election was stolen through judicial and INEC complicity, but such assertions are based on conjecture and theories that cannot be proven by learned thinkers. That belief reframes every political debate as a continuation of injustice. If you think the system is rigged, then shouting down opponents feels like self defense. The court losses and the language of “stolen mandate” hardened attitudes. Political rivals are no longer counterparts in democracy but collaborators in a crime. That framing makes violent rhetoric feel justified.

Ethnic and religious fault lines have been weaponized in the discourse. Obi’s candidacy galvanized support in the Southeast and among Christian communities who felt marginalized. Some supporters interpreted criticism of Obi as an attack on their identity. In response, they met political disagreement with ethnic slurs and religious insults. Opponents replied in kind, and the cycle escalated. Once identity is involved, political arguments quickly become personal, and the line between online insults and real world confrontation gets thinner.

The lack of political experience among many Obidients shows in their engagement style. Traditional parties train members through student unions, local government politics, and years of compromise. The Obidient wave brought in people whose first political act was a presidential campaign. They skipped the gradual socialization that teaches negotiation, tolerance of dissent, and the long game of coalition building. As a result, disagreement is treated as betrayal, and the response is to cancel, curse, or threaten rather than persuade. They are ill mannered, badly raised, and divisive in their political rhetoric.

Prominent influencers within the movement model combative behavior. Skit makers, musicians, and Twitter personalities who drive Obidient messaging often rely on insults for content. Their followers mimic the style because it looks effective. When abuse is packaged as comedy or “dragging,” it normalizes vitriol for younger audiences. The economic incentives of the attention economy mean that the most insultive posts get the most engagement, and engagement translates to monetization.

The response from opponents has also been inflammatory, creating a feedback loop. Politicians from rival parties have mocked, dismissed, and profiled Obidients as naive or tribal. Security agencies have been accused of profiling supporters. Each incident is catalogued online as evidence of persecution, which then justifies more aggression. In this tit for tat environment, restraint is seen as weakness, and the base rewards those who “fight back” with the harshest language.

The consequence is that the Obidient brand now carries a reputation for toxicity that undermines its political goals. Swing voters, undecided elites, and potential allies are alienated by the insults. Violent incidents at rallies and attacks on journalists reinforce the perception that the movement cannot tolerate opposition. For a group that wants to win national elections, the inability to expand beyond a core of angry loyalists is a strategic liability. Political power in Nigeria still requires bridges across regions, and bridges are not built with abuse.

Changing this trajectory would require deliberate culture work from within the movement. It would mean creating structures that reward persuasion over insults, and leaders who are willing to lose online clout to gain national trust. Until then, the pattern of aggression will continue to define how the public experiences Obidients, regardless of the merit of their grievances.

Election is a game of numbers and manifestos are used to convince electorates of the benefits of supporting a particular candidate, not verbal insults, online dragging, and bitterness from not being in power for over sixty years. The end result will be another electoral defeat that would perhaps put an end to that sort of approach once and for all in the Nigerian political space.

I am very sure they will change him. One thing I have noticed about the Obidients is the demand for accountability. It is something we have lost as a nation because people have gotten tired of complaining and not seeing any change but this is what people expect even in all the parties but unfortunately, the babasopecracy will not let it be.
