Towards a beautiful face. Maintaining a clear and beautiful skin, takes time, consistency and effort. Dermatologist may recommend lots of products, but some of them can be expensive and may actually take a long time to work. You can, however, incorporate some home remedies for blackheads and whiteheads into your daily beauty regimen and in a few weeks, you will experience a drastic reduction or even total elimination of the problem. ● Toothpaste – Toothpaste is an effective blackhead and whitehead remover. Apply a thin paste to your infected areas and let it sit on your face for at least 25 minutes. You will probably feel a burning sensation when you apply the toothpaste, but this is normal and will pass. Once you remove the toothpaste, the top of your blackheads and whiteheads will disappear, but you still need to thoroughly wash your face to remove the buildup underneath. Repeat this home remedy every other day for two weeks. ● Tomato – Tomatoes have natural antiseptic properties that dry up whiteheads and blackheads. Peel and mash a small tomato. Apply the tomato pulp to your blackheads and whiteheads before going to bed. Leave the tomato pulp on your face while you sleep and then wash your face in warm water in the morning. ● Lemon -Wash your face in warm water. Then, squeeze the juice of one lemon into a bowl. Add in a pinch of salt and stir the mixture. Apply the mixture to your blackheads and whiteheads. Leave the mixture on for approximately 20 minutes and then wash your face with warm water again. ● Lime – You can also use equal parts of lime juice and cinnamon powder and apply this mixture to blackheads. Leave it on overnight and rinse it off in the morning ● Cornstarch – Mix about a three-to-one cornstarch to vinegar ratio into a paste. Apply it to your problem areas and let sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Remove the paste with warm water and a washcloth. ● Yogurt - Mix three tablespoons of plain yogurt with two tablespoons of oatmeal. Add one teaspoon of olive oil and one tablespoon of lemon juice to the mixture. Stir the mixture thoroughly and apply it to the effective area of the face. Let the mixture sit for five to seven minutes then rinse off with cold water. ● Almond or oatmeal – Mix either oatmeal or almond powder with just enough rose water to make a spreadable paste. Apply it to your problem areas with your fingertips first and then apply it to the rest of your face. Let it set for about 15 minutes and then rinse your face with cold water. ● Rice – Soak rice in milk for 5 hours and then grind this in a blender until it is paste-like in consistency. Use the paste as a scrub on affected areas of the body. ● Potatoes – Grate raw potatoes and then rub the area with the mixture. Wash it off after 15 minutes. ● Fenugreek leaves – Crush some fenugreek leaves and mix with water to form a paste. Put this on the face for 15 minutes and then remove it. Do this every night to keep your face free of blackheads. ● Coriander leaves – Mix some coriander leaves and a little turmeric powder with water and form a paste. Use this as a mask to eliminate blackheads. ● Oatmeal -Grind oatmeal into a powder in a blender and then add some rose water. Use this on affected areas for 15 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. ● Baking soda – Prepare a mixture of equal parts of baking soda and water and rub it onto your face or other body areas prone to blackheads. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. ● Honey is also good for removing blackheads. Spread honey on the affected area and remove it after 15 minutes. Remember – Be gentle to your skin. Never pinch, scrape, poke, press, or squeeze too hard! (Culled from facts that blow your mind). |

We all like to look our best, but did you know your beauty routine could be bad for you? From salon treatments to everyday beauty procedures, experts enumerate some beauty health hazards that are better avoided altogether. According to the online portal, realbuzz.com, top on the list is eyeliner, which has been around for centuries and is popular with many women as a way to frame the eyes and make them stand out. An ophthalmologist, Dr. Yemisi Oye, says, ordinarily, eyeliner is no cause for concern; however, applying any product so close to your eyes can come with its risks. She notes that many eyeliners contain chemicals that can cause irritation, and applying them too close to the inner corners of the eyes can block the tear ducts. She counsels, “To keep your eyes healthy, use natural kohl eyeliner, avoid applying too close to the tear ducts, and replace your eyeliner every three months.” Another health hazard noted by experts is how we wear our hair. Most women, for all sorts of reasons, wear wigs. Experts contend that wigs may look harmless in themselves, but when you also consider the tugging and pulling that go with combing the hair while wearing the wig, then you should be aware that you are pulling at the root of your hair. Consultant Dermatologist and Medical Director, SkinHealth, Dr. Laide Pearse, says he keeps seeing mostly young ladies who have suffered severe alopecia because of extended wig-wearing period. Pearse notes, “What we are saying here is that, however refined a wig is, it is unnatural and, because of our weather, even the finest of them soon goes hard after some time. As such, if your wig is sewn or gummed to your hair — as is the usual practice — whenever you apply the comb, you will be pulling hard at the root of your hair. This can strain the connective tissue in the scalp, leading to headaches, hair breakage and loss.” The same issue applies when you wear your hair in a tight braid or when you wear tight headbands. Another health hazard has to do with the use of hair dye. Just because of the youth culture, it has become rather difficult to age gracefully. So, people use hair dye to ‘correct’ the grey. Well, no doubt, shiny black hair looks youthful, beautiful and generally acceptable, but experts warn that much may be at stake! Professor of Anatomy, Prof. Oladapo Ashiru, warns that the chemical para-phenylenediamine is thought to be behind up to 80 per cent of allergic reactions to hair dye. He notes that though most of the reactions are relatively minor, users may develop blisters and skin sores, while para-phenylenediamine has been linked to more serious conditions such as permanent hair loss, cancer and, in rare cases, even death due to severe reaction. Hair-straightening products (hair perms) come next. In 2011, the U.S. Department of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a health warning over the risks of exposure to the carcinogen formaldehyde found even in straightening products listed as formaldehyde-free. Whilst salon workers who regularly use these products are at the most risk, OSHA says it is wise to avoid the dangerous chemical. Oye also notes that mascara can harbour bacteria that is transferred into the product after each application and which can reproduce in the dark, warm environment of the mascara tube, potentially leading to eye infections. “To help reduce the health risks associated with it, make sure you store your mascara in a cool place and replace it after three months. Also, avoid applying your mascara in the car or on a journey as the motion can cause scratches to the eye during application, which can also lead to infections.” As beautiful as it is on the lips, lipsticks also took some bashing from experts. Statistics reveal that the average woman unwittingly swallows between four and nine pounds of lipstick in a lifetime. A 2004 study revealed that up to 28 per cent of lipsticks contain chemicals that can cause cancer; while another 2007 study by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics also found that more than 50 per cent of lipstick brands tested contained lead. Experts advocate natural, organic brands of lipstick, especially for pregnant ladies. Not the least on the list are false nails. The dermatologist says when applied properly, they should pose little risk to user’s health. The problem is the long term use, or when one uses cheap acrylic or poorly fitted nails. He warns that these can damage the nail bed, lead to fungal infections between the false and natural nail and may also lead to natural nails coming off. He also notes that some nail bars use acrylic nail products containing the chemical methyl methacrylate, which has been linked to respiratory problems and severe allergic reactions. Scientific researches have also suggested that over-exposure to the ultra-violet lamps used to fix artificial nails can also increase risk of skin cancer. Source: Punch

Two toddlers in Ketu, Lagos State, who were declared missing on January 25, 2013 have been found dead in an abandoned vehicle on the premises of a building next to theirs on Taike Street. Punch Metro had on January 30, 2013, reported story of the kids – Toheeb Adedokun (three) and Tajudeen Falilu ( three). The family as well as the police had suspected that they were kidnapped before the discovery of their remains on Monday. Our correspondent learnt that the vehicle in which the children were found was a Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle, which was used as collateral. According to a police theory, the children went into the vehicle but were trapped inside, causing them to suffocate. The Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, said the corpses were discovered by bank officials, who had gone to redeem the vehicle. She said, “On Monday, at about 4:30pm, one Phillip Odi in company with Julius Odetola, both of whom are employees of Berachah Microfinance Bank, reported that on the same day, they received a text message from Macdonabi Jones Enterprise Limited, a customer of the bank, who pledged his Honda Pilot as collateral. “The bank employees said on reaching the house located at 20 Taike Street, where the vehicle was parked, they discovered the corpses of the two children.” The tragic news, however, did not go down well with residents of the street as they alleged foul play. Our correspondent, who visited the children’s parents, learnt that the occupants of the house where the corpses were found had fled for fear of being attacked. Some residents told PUNCH Metro that the occupants of the building had a case to answer. One of them , who identified herself as Iya Basira said, “How could two corpses be in a compound for over a month and no one smelt any odour? “We looked for these children for weeks and even the occupants of that building were aware that the children were missing.” Our correspondent observed as residents pursued one of the occupants of the building, who was strolling down the road. “Go away, we don’t want you in our neighbourhood”, they shouted. It was learnt that earlier, an occupant of the building had to come with two policemen to be able to take some of her properties from her apartment. It was also learnt that the vehicle had been taken to the Special-Anti Robbery Squad, Ikeja. The parents of the toddlers and other members of the family said they planned pursuing the case to a logical conclusion. Toheeb’s mother, Adijat, said the death of the children was controversial because on the day they went missing, the said vehicle was not parked in the compound. She said, “I went to that compound to look for them. On getting there, I saw a neighbour, Sir Kay’s wife. Sir Kay is into rental service and he is also a teacher. His wife told me she saw the two children that day. I didn’t see that vehicle in the compound because I looked around.” Asked how she heard about the death of the toddlers, she said, “Some policemen came to me this morning (Tuesday) and asked if I was the mother of one of the missing children. They showed me pictures of the children and told me to point to mine which I did. They asked me to describe the clothes my child wore that day and I told them that he wore polo shirt (army colour mixed with red) with shorts. They asked for the clothes the second person wore and I told them. “They told the fathers of the kids to follow them but we (women) were told to go back as we might not be able to withstand the shock. When I saw my husband’s face, I knew the worst had happened.” Our correspondent, who went round the building, a bungalow with three flats, learnt that the landlord was late and the tenants had not returned. The signs and symptoms of breast cancer: How to check your breasts thoroughly Anastacia has revealed she is battling breast cancer for the second time. The I’m Out of Love songstress took to Facebook to break the news of her diagnosis, admitting her heartbreak at having to cancel her European tour to undergo treatment. Anastacia has been diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time ©RexThe 44-year-old said she is determined to beat the disease again, encouraging sufferers to live by her motto: “Don’t ever let cancer get the ‘Best of You!’” [Related: Anastacia reveals she has been diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time] A spokesperson for the star wrote: “A born survivor, Anastacia has one goal and that is to make a full recovery with the support of her family, friends and everyone around her.” The singer first survived breast cancer back in 2003 and has since become an inspiration to fellow sufferers – publicly speaking out about her refusal to let cancer beat her. In the UK alone, around 50,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. It remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, with one in eight women developing breast cancer at some point during their lives. Breast cancer charities are enouraging women to regularly check their breasts to know what is normal ©RexYet new improvements in screening, treatment and better awareness mean more women than ever in the UK are surviving the disease. Celebrities, such as Anastacia, who choose to speak out about their battle with the disease are helping to highlight the importance of regular breast checks. [Related: The five health symptoms women should never ignore] Eluned Hughes, of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, told us: “When celebrities feel comfortable to talk about their own experiences with breast cancer it really does help to raise important awareness of the disease. “We’re privileged to have a fantastic selection of celebrities support our breast awareness campaign, Touch, Look, Check (TLC). “Celebrity involvement in our TLC campaign has continued to have a huge impact. Their standing in the public eye means that we’re able to get even more women talking about their breasts and the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.” The spokesperson added: “We know that more than half of UK women are still not regularly checking their breasts, and the level of publicity a celebrity can bring is invaluable if we are to stop women dying from breast cancer. “We’re sorry to hear about Anastacia’s news and we wish her the very best with her treatment.” Elsewhere, Kristin Hallenga, founder of UK-based breast cancer charity Coppafeel, said celebrities speaking out not only raises awareness, but also helps to alleviate women’s fear of checking their breasts. “People like Anastacia help to get talk of the disease into people’s minds,” she told us. “The fact that she’s speaking about what she’s going through is so important as it encourages women to talk about breast cancer and stamp out the fear of checking their breasts.” The charity aims to raise awareness and educate young women into getting into the habit of knowing how their breasts look and feel normally. And Kristin says getting women used to checking when they’re young could be life-saving later on. She explained: “A key message for us is to get young people thinking about it. “If they are already talking about cancer and noticing any changes in their bodies then, they’ll be more likely to know the signs when they’re older and higher risk.” Here, Coppafeel reveal their top tips to performing a thorough breast check: 1. Look for nipple discharge 2. Feel for lumps and thickening 3. Look for swelling in your armpit or around the collar bone 4. Feel constant pain in your breast or armpit 5. Look for changes in skin texture, e.g. puckering/ dimpling 6. Look for nipple inversion and changes in direction 7. Look for a change in size and shape 8. Look for a rash of crusting of the nipple or surrounding area For more information on how to spot the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and to receive mobile alerts to remind you to check your breasts, visit www.coppafeel.org http://uk.lifestyle.yahoo.com/anastacia-vows-to-beat- breast-cancer-for-a-second-time–we-reveal-how-to- perform-a-thorough-breast-check-124711769.html |
