A day after his security aides were withdrawn by the Federal Government, the Speaker of the House of Reps, Aminu Tambuwal, has filed a suit against the FG before a Federal High court in Abuja.
Tanbuwal filed the suit today Oct. 31st asking the court to declare that the withdrawal of his security aides while he's still the Speaker is unlawful and unconstitutional. He also asked the court to restrain FG from further infringing on his rights and privileges. There are reports they are trying to declare his seat vacant and organize a bye-election for the purpose of replacing him. Tanbuwal asked the court to restrain FG, INEC, PDP and IGP from doing this. In the meantime, he wants the court to order FG to return his security detail pending the determination of the suit.

JONATHAN 2015: Guess Goodluck Jonathan is giving out bags of rice for his campaign.

Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has said he patronises drinking joints every Friday in order to get close to the ‘common man’ in the state.
The governor said this in Abuja on Thursday while defending the concept of “stomach infrastructure” introduced by his government.
He told journalists that it would be wrong to assume that stomach infrastructure meant only sharing of food and money to the people.
Fayose said, “I also go to beer parlour on Fridays to stay with the common men there. Governance is not church; it is about diverse characters and you must relate with them as such.
“Christmas is coming, why do people go out of their ways to be shopping or doing other things if it is not just to make people merry?
“So, I’m grooming chicken, buying rice, yams, plantain, and the rest of them. I am sure if I give them to families during the festive period, they will be happy. So, stomach infrastructure is a way of life.”
The governor said that most people who committed crime did so because they felt that life was no longer worthy of living for them and that there was no one to tell them that there is life for them.
He said it was because of this that he set up a department for stomach infrastructure and also appointed a special assistant and a personal assistant on it.
“So, my style, without apology, is that stomach infrastructure is a way of life for me, I will relate well with my people to alleviate poverty and hunger,” he added.
He said that the welfare of the people in the society mattered, hence his condemnation of spending N3.3bn on the building of Governor’s House by his predecessor, ex-Governor Kayode Fayemi.
“That is not to condemn or fight anybody but I have another instance, the University of Ado Ekiti has most of its courses yet to be accredited and they needed about N800m to sort out those problems, will the governor be living in affluence when the whole state is in darkness?,” he asked.
On the face-off between him and members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, the governor said he was already discussing with the speaker.
He said he was sure that the leadership of the House was ready to work with him.
He said, “I am an experienced governor and I know the game. Very soon, my House of Assembly will be together, working to keep the ground running; they want to work with me and I want to work with them.”

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday engaged some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in a meeting aimed at taking a common position on the Tuesday defection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.
The meeting took place hours after the House said the PDP, individuals and groups condemning the defection of the speaker to the All Progressives Congress should not dictate to it on how to conduct its affairs.
Tambuwal had announced his defection from the PDP before he adjourned sitting till December 3.
The situation made the President to summon the National Chairman of the PDP, Adamu Mu’azu, to the meeting which had the Deputy Speaker of the House, Emeka Ihedioha; the Deputy Leader of the House, Mr. Leo Ogor; and a member from Delta State, Ndudi Elumelu, in attendance.
Some PDP governors such as Gabriel Suswam (Benue); Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom); Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa): Ibrahim Dankwabo (Gombe) and Sullivan Chime (Enugu) were also part of the meeting.
Top government officials who attended the parley included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim; the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki; and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Muhammed Adoke (SAN).
One of those in attendance told one of our correspondents on the condition of anonymity that the meeting centered on how to make Tambuwal vacate his seat as speaker.
“The issue of the Speaker and his exit was one of the fundamental issues discussed at the meeting,” he said.
The source however did not disclose the decision reached at the meeting.
Another source said that Ihedioha “took the heat at the meeting.”
He did not explain further.
The presence of Adoke and Dasuki at the meeting suggested that they might have reviewed the legal and security implications of the options available to them with the two government officials.
Earlier, Mu’azu had at another meeting the President had with a delegation of the Federal Capital Territory Council of Chiefs, dropped the hint that Jonathan summoned him.
“The President had summoned me for a meeting. I was with him when he wanted to come and receive you and he told me to follow you. I only did follow follow,” he had told members of the delegation.
The PDP had shortly after Tambuwal announced his defection called on him to do the needful by resigning as speaker.
The party, argued through its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, that since Tambuwal became the speaker on the ticket of the “majority party (PDP), he had no right to continue to occupy the seat.
But the House said on Tuesday that the PDP and most of the commentators on the issue were “ignorant” of the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the House Standing Orders.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Victor Ogene, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, said Tambuwal did not breach any law in defecting to the APC.
He also noted that there was no provision in the constitution prescribing that the speaker must be elected from among the majority party members.
Ogene cited Section 50 (1)(b) of the constitution to buttress his argument.
He said, “The clear provisions of Section 50(1) (b) of the Nigerian Constitution easily settle the worries regarding the continued speakership of Tambuwal – ‘There shall be a Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives who shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves.’’’
He also noted that the speaker was elected as the representative of the “generality of Nigerians” and not necessarily because he belonged to a particular political party.
On the views of some “commentators” that Tambuwal should have vacated his office by virtue of the provision of Section 68(1)(g) of the constitution, he replied that the matter was still awaiting judicial decision.
Ogene added, “It is common knowledge that following the defection of 37 members of the House in December 2013, from the PDP to APC, there has been multiple court cases on the matter, thus rendering it subjudice to discuss any likely outcome.
“Everyone is thus enjoined to await the final judicial pronouncement on the issue of defection, which has afflicted virtually all political parties in the land.”
He warned the PDP against interfering with the lawmakers’ “privilege” and constitutionally-guaranteed freedom to choose their leaders.
Ogene stated, “Additionally, Order 1, Rule 1 (2) of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives states: ‘ In all cases not provided for hereinafter, or by sectional or other Orders, precedents or practices of the House, the House shall by resolution regulate its procedure.’
“It is in the light of the foregoing that the House wishes to appeal to those who seek to regulate its procedure from outside its hallowed chambers to have a rethink, as the nation’s Constitution, the Standing Orders of the House and precedent – as in the Speakership of the late Edwin Ume-Ezeoke in the Second Republic on a minority platform – have all provided answers to what would have otherwise been a knotty political issue.”
But as Ogene spoke, the PDP through its National Vice-Chairman of the party in the South-South, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, vowed to do everything within its powers to regain the speakership of the House.
Ojougboh told journalists at the national headquarters of the party in Abuja that there was no way Tambuwal and other defectors from the party would be allowed to go away with the party’s mandate.
He said, “PDP is a very disciplined party. If you come and steal in the PDP and use the PDP to elevate yourself and get into office when the time comes, God will get you out like the issue of Tambuwal.
“You can see how God has exposed him. PDP will do everything within the law to regain its seat and that is what we are going to do in Edo and Rivers states as well. We are going back to the South-South to regain our seats.”

Sata had traveled to London for unspecified medical treatment last week, and died at a hospital there Tuesday evening. Officials did not disclose a cause of death.
"It's shocking, it's devastating, because I knew he was sick. But I did not know it was going to end this way," said George Zulu, permanent secretary at the Zambian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "(We) lost a man who devoted his whole life to his country."

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said he could not rule out the possibility of committing errors while administering the affairs of the country.
He admitted that while leading the country, there are possibilities of “faults and failures.”
Jonathan spoke at the second edition of an interdenominational church service with the theme “A day with Jesus for Nigeria in Israel” held in Israel as part of his two-day pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The event which was aired live was monitored on the Nigeria Television Authority.
The errors notwithstanding, Jonathan said he was sure that God would not allow him to take a decision or steps that would be against the interest of the country.
“For me, and I believe for the governors that are here with me, we are mere mortals. As mere mortals, we are not insulated from errors. There may be faults or failures. But one thing I know is that God will not allow me to do anything that will not be in the best interest of our country,” he told the congregation that included state governors, ministers, clerics and Nigerian pilgrims.
The President said despite the many challenges facing the country under his watch, he saw a new Nigeria emerging.
He said he saw a new Nigeria that all its citizens would be living in peace and unity and children yet unborn would be proud of.
Jonathan said, “I see a new Nigeria emerging; a Nigeria that our children will be proud of; a Nigeria that things will work; a Nigeria that we will have good education system; a Nigeria that we will have a good health system.
“I see a new Nigeria that we will have food security; a Nigeria that we will have houses for our people; a Nigeria that we will have good infrastructure for our movement. Above all, a Nigeria that we will live in peace and unity.
“Of course, we know that this is a period of challenges. Even as if we are saying this, it looks like a mirage to people because we know the challenges we have.
“But it does not take a lifetime to solve a problem. With prayers and unity, we shall overcome all our challenges.”
While identifying the Boko Haram as one of the greatest problems of his administration, he made a case for collective efforts to tackle the nation’s unique challenges.
He also listed kidnappings in the South, poor governance and corruption as some of the nation’s vices.
The President however said that with citizens’ commitment and prayers, the nation would overcome.
Quoting from Lamentation 3:37, Jonathan declared, “Who is he that speaks against Nigeria and comes to pass when the Lord has not commanded it?” amidst a loud ovation from the congregation.
He asked the pilgrims to pray for unity, peace and security as well as against what he called counter forces that could hinder his administration’s transformation agenda.
Jonathan said, “With unity, we can do anything. The country was so united when we encountered Ebola. With God on our side, we were able to conquer Ebola Virus.
“That singular act had brought Nigeria to the limelight, even when CNN(Cable News Network) talks about Ebola, it make reference to Nigeria. That is what unity can do. With unity and prayer, we will get to where we want our country to go.
“My request is that you should stand by the government. When you stand by the government just like you stood by us during the Ebola era, we will surely overcome our challenges,” he said.
The Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo, preached the sermon at the service that featured special prayers for the President, his family, other leaders and the country.
Other Nigerian pilgrims joined the President and its entourage for the service.
The President had earlier in the day had a bilateral talk with the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in Jerusalem.
Jonathan is expected back in the country on Monday (today).
The other clergymen present at the service were the Primate Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh; and President, Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor.
Governors Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom); Gabriel Suswam (Benue); Willie Obiano (Anambra); Jonah Jang (Plateau) and their wives joined members of the Federal Executive Council like the Minister of State for FCT, Olajumoke Akinjide; Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo; and Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe at the service.

Kidnappers have released the immediate past President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Mr. Okey Wali (SAN).
The incumbent president of the NBA, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), said in a statement that Wali was released at about 11pm on Thursday.
Wali, who was abducted in Port Harcourt on October 11, was said to have been released “hale, hearty and in good spirit.”
Alegeh said, “The 26th President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Okey Wali, SAN, was at about 11pm tonight (Thursday) 23rd October, 2014 released by his abductors after thirteen [13] days in captivity. I have personally spoken to him and can confirm that he is hale, hearty and in good spirit.
“He expresses his thanks and appreciation to members of the Bar and Bench, the security agencies, friends and family for their concern, support and prayers during the period of his ordeal. He gives glory to God for his safe release.
“The Nigerian Bar Association is greatly delighted by the safe release of Okey Wali (SAN) and wishes to express appreciation to all NBA members and well-meaning Nigerians who supported the Bar and the Okey Wali family during this trying period.
“We must also commend NBA members for keeping calm throughout this period and not taking any steps that may have directly or indirectly jeopardised the efforts for his safe release which have now yielded positive results.”
While commending the various security agencies for the safe release of Wali, the NBA also challenged the government to be alive to its responsibility of addressing the increasing spate of insecurity in the country.

A bomb blast at a bus station in a north Nigeria area previously targeted by Boko Haram killed five people, police said Thursday, in what appeared to be the latest crack in the government’s purported ceasefire with the Islamists.
Police in Bauchi state confirmed overnight witness reports of a huge explosion at the terminal in the town of Azare at 9:45 pm (2045 GMT).
Area resident Musa Babale said the blast“shook buildings”and sent locals rushing for shelter.
“The whole place was a mess,”he told AFP after visiting the site late Wednesday.
Bauchi police spokesman Mohammed Haruna said the bomb killed five people, leaving them“burnt beyond recognition,”and that 12 others were injured.
Several witnesses said they believed the bomb had been embedded in a parked car and was detonated remotely, but police did not give details on the nature of the explosive device.
While there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Bauchi has been one of the hardest hit areas in Boko Haram’s five-year uprising against the Nigerian state.
Bus station bombings have also become something of a hallmark for the insurgent group after twin attacks at a terminal on the outskirts of the capital Abuja earlier this year killed nearly 100 people.
The station in Azare, a town roughly 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the state capital Bauchi city, is a widely used transit point by travellers coming from Nigeria’s embattled northeast, which has been under a state of emergency since May of last year.

Babale said locals were fortunate the blast went off later at night, as the Azare station is packed with commuters earlier in the evening and the toll could could have been much higher.
Azare saw a series of attacks blamed on Boko Haram through 2012, while Bauchi has been consistently targeted throughout the uprising, including through church bombings, coordinated gun raids and notably a massive prison raid in 2011.
Any indication that the latest explosion was tied to Boko Haram will further undermine the government’s claim to have negotiated a ceasefire with the extremist group.
The surprise deal was announced by the presidency and military on Friday but there are already strong signs that the pact was hollow.
Violence raged through the weekend in the northeast and the credibility of the so-called Boko Haram negotiator has been widely questioned.
A top aide to President Goodluck Jonathan also said the Islamists had agreed to release the 219 schoolgirls held hostage since their April 14 abduction in the northeast town of Chibok.
Like with the ceasefire, there has so far been no sign that the hostage release deal is legitimate.
Nigerian negotiators were reportedly set to resume talks with Boko Haram envoys in neighbouring Chad next week, but further questions will likely be asked about the identities of the so-called rebel negotiators.
Boko Haram, which wants to create an Islamic state in mainly Muslim northern Nigeria, is a fractured group with an unclear command structure.
Analysts doubt that the individuals in talks with Nigeria have the influence to enforce a blanket ceasefire.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has accused his predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, of spending N50m on beds in his and his wife’s bedrooms in the newly built Ekiti State Government House.
He claimed in a statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday that what was spent on the two bedrooms, their toilets and bathrooms was in the region of N100m.
The statement titled “N3.3bn new Government House Is Fayemi’s Show of Wickedness To Ekiti People,” was signed by his Special Assistant on Information and Social Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka.
But Fayemi, through his media aide, Olayinka Oyebode, said the allegation was more aboutThe Comedy of Errors.He advised Fayose to stop the theatre of absurd.
The statement by Olayinka described the new government house as an act of insensitivity to the plight of Ekiti people, many of whom, could not afford to feed once in a day.
According to the statement, no progressive-minded Ekiti person would see the “out-of-this-world luxury” provided with over N3.3bn borrowed funds for Fayemi, his wife and children and will not weep for the state and its people.
It claimed that the bed on which Fayemi slept before he left government was N30m while that of his wife was over N20m.

The statement read in part, “Between Fayemi and his wife, what was spent on their bedrooms, toilets and bathrooms will be in the region of N100m.
“How can a responsible government use borrowed funds to provide this kind of luxury for the governor and his family alone in a state where a lot of people cannot afford to feed more than once in a day?
“People should ask the former governor what was really wrong with the abandoned governor’s lodge used by his (Fayemi) predecessors?
“Shouldn’t such funds expended on the hilltop edifice have been used to resuscitate the moribund textile factory in Ado-Ekiti that was turned to lock-up shops to provide employment for our teeming youths?
“Also, was Fayemi living in that manner of opulence before he became governor? Was he sleeping on a body-massaging bed and bathing in an electric-controlled Jacuzzi?
“Here is Fayemi, who could not pay workers salaries, owing them two-month salaries before he left. A Fayemi, who out of sheer wickedness refused to pay pensioners N2.4bn pension and gratuities; N400m workers leave bonus, N700m subventions to parastatals and tertiary institutions and remit N2.4bn four months’ cooperative society’s deductions from workers salaries preferring to use N3.3bn borrowed funds to provide luxury for himself, his wife and children alone.
“This is wickedness!’’
The statement quoted Fayose as being alarmed at the waste of Ekiti resources to provide comfort for a single family out of the thousands of households in the state.
It added, “The governor would have preferred to sell out the property and use the fund to provide basic amenities and employment opportunities for the people.”
The statement also alleged that Fayemi was planning to buy a helicopter if he had returned to office for a second term because the plan was for him “to run government from the comfort of Oke-Ayoba Government House and move from there to anywhere he wanted without the people seeing him.”
It added, “That’s also the reason he (Fayemi) refused to renovate the Governor’s Office, leaving it in a state of disrepair because he knew that he was not going to use the office during his second term.
“Also, contract for the maintenance of the property was already awarded for N150m per annum.
“When we visited the Government House for the first time yesterday, Mr Governor was like; how I wish I can sell off this place or turn it to commercial use? It is simply wicked for a governor to be more interested in this manner of ostentatious comfort at the expense of the people.”
Fayose, according to the statement, wondered “if the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whom Fayemi and his so-called progressives claimed as their role-model, lived in any government house, much less of building an Emperor-like house for himself.”
“Did the late Adekunle Ajasin build a monarchical government house for himself? Did Baba Lateef Jakande live in any government house? These are great Yoruba sons, who recorded landmark achievements as premier of the old Western Region and governors of Lagos State and the old Ondo State respectively.
“The duo of Ajasin and Jakande were able to impact tremendously on their states because they did not like to waste public funds on the provision of luxury for themselves.”
The statement said that “left for Governor Fayose, he won’t use that aristocratic government house because it is a symbol of oppression in itself.”
The statement added, “He(Fayose) will prefer to live where Ekiti people can easily see him, touch him, eat with him and discuss the progress of the state together.
“But abandoning it would amount to colossal waste of public funds; but Governor Fayose will not hide himself from the masses.”
Fayemi’s media aide, however dismissed the allegation by Fayose, saying “I have taken a guided tour of that place and I don’t think I have seen such an outcry.
“I don’t know where they got their figure from; it sounds absurd. I ‘ll advise them to stop this theatre of absurd. Governance is a serious business and I am appealing to them not to reduce it to a joke.
“They are turning Ekiti into a circus show and they should stop it. It is childish and puerile for them to have come up with that figure. There is nothing ostentatious about Dr. Fayemi’s lifestyle: the lodge is there as a property of the state.
“Whether Fayose stays there or not is his cup of tea. The new government house is a legacy building. Dr. Fayemi did not go with it to Isan-Ekiti; it is for the state. It is not about personal aggrandisement; it is a befitting edifice for the state. Go to other states of the federation and see their government houses. Ekiti state deserves the best.”

According to the source, the ban arose from preliminary investigations by Britain’s Charity Commission that determined that monies donated to Bishop Oyedepo’s church for charitable purposes were funneled to Nigeria to fund the preacher’s flamboyant lifestyle.
Bishop Oyedepo owns a plush private jet and has a fleet of expensive cars, among many other astonishing personal assets.
Bishop Oyedepo was barred from entering the United Kingdom in July. However, when SaharaReporters contacted Nicola Kelly, a press officer at the immigration desk at the UK Home Office, she declined to comment on the case.
The same day, our reporter spoke to one Emmanuel Igban, a media aide to Bishop Oyedepo, but he denied that the high-flying preacher had been banned.
But our British source asserted that Bishop Oyedepo and one of his sons had been aware of the probe of church finances for at least three years now. He added that the probe was triggered after the British Charity Commission found out that the wealthy pastor had taken out more than £16 million from the UK since 2009. He added that the commission closely monitors any repatriation of church resources, disclosing that any repatriation of funds of that size was most likely illegal.
According to the source, Bishop Oyedepo claimed that he was running a not-for-profit religious organization, “but the commission determined that he was diverting funds to engage in a series of profitable ventures.”
Bishop Oyedepo, who recently turned 60, is believed to be Nigeria’s richest pastor and is widely regarded as one of the richest televangelists in the world.
The UK government has distributed notices warning airlines that operate flights to the UK not carry the bishop.
Mr. Oyedepo’s private jet is also barred from entering the UK airspace with him on board.
A few years ago, Bishop Oyedepo provoked international outrage when videotapes of one of his church events showed him slapping a teenage girl he accused of being a witch. In the face of mounting criticism, including calls for his arrest for assaulting a minor, Mr. Oyedepo boasted that he would slap the “witch” again.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday led other members of the Federal Executive Council to bid seven ministers who will be seeking elective positions in 2015 farewell.
Barring any last minute change of mind, the seven ministers will send their resignation letters to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, latest by Monday, hence they will not attend the next FEC meeting.
The seven ministers, according to the President, are Mr. Labaran Maku (Information); Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu (Health); Mr. Nyesom Wike (State, Education); Samuel Ortom (State, Industry, Trade and Investment); Senator Musiliu Obanikoro (State, Defence); Mr. Darius Ishaku (State, Niger Delta) and Chief Emeka Wogu (Labour).
They will be contesting the governorship elections in their various states.
The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, thanked the seven ministers on behalf of the FEC and wish them the best in their future endeavours while Maku responded on behalf of the ministers who are exiting the cabinet.

There are strong indications that former President Olusegun Obasanjo may have warned the All Progressives Congress not to field former Vice-President Abubakar Atiku as its flagbearer in the 2015 elections.
Obasanjo, during a recent visit by the APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to his residence in Abeokuta, was said to have warned the opposition party against fielding an “unclean vessel” as its presidential candidate in 2015.
An impeccable source, who was at the meeting but did not want his name mentioned, toldSaturday PUNCHthat last week’s visit by Tinubu to Obasanjo was meant to remind the former President of the need to support the APC to realise its ambition of winning next year’s presidential election.
The source said, “Chief Obasanjo appreciated Tinubu’s visit to his home, but specifically warned the APC to shut its door against “unclean vessel.”
“Chief Obasanjo reiterated his refusal to join the APC when Tinubu visited him in his Abeokuta residence, but warned the party to beware of Atiku.
“The former President appreciated the move by the APC to find out what he knew about two of the APC aspirants seeking the party’s presidential ticket. He was happy that the party consulted him over whom to pick as its presidential candidate. The former President gave detailed information on the APC presidential aspirants to Tinubu.”
But Atiku’s media aide, Garba Shehu, said he was not aware of such comments by Obasanjo against the former vice-president.
Shehu, who said that Atiku had consulted relevant stakeholders on his plan to become Nigeria’s president next year, said, “You can quote me; we are not in any way aware of such comment. What I can say is that the former vice-president has written a letter to his former boss, respectfully informing him of his wish to bid for the APC ticket.”
He also said that Atiku had sent similar letters to other Nigerians.
“These letters, which were personally signed, had gone to thousands of other Nigerians, including politicians, traditional and religious leaders as well as friendly-diplomatic missions.”
Senate President David Mark and Tinubu had last Friday held separate closed-door meetings with Obasanjo. Both Mark and the former Lagos State governor said the issues discussed at the meetings held at the Obasanjo’s Hilltop residence in Abeokuta centred on the state of the nation.
Tinubu had told journalists that he had discussion with Obasanjo on “some of his former boys” who would vie for elective positions in the 2015 general elections, especially the Presidency.
He had said, “We are here to pay homage to our former President and discuss with him because he has a number of influences in the political sphere.
“We need to talk to find out his thinking about Nigeria and the future. We need to seek his observation on some of his former boys who are running for Presidency in our party.”
Mark had also described Obasanjo as the father of the nation with a wealth of experience.
The Senate President had told journalists after the meeting that he came with his team, including Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan; the Peoples Democratic Party Women Leader, Mrs. Josephine Anenih; and Senator Polycarp Nwite, among others to discuss with the former President and raise some basic issues that affected both the party and the nation.
He said, “We discussed issues that will move Nigeria forward because Chief Obasanjo’s love for Nigeria is unquantifiable. So, we had a good discussion with him.”
Saturday PUNCHalso learnt that the former president would support APC in its bid to win next year’s presidential election.
Party sources said Obasanjo did not need to defect to the opposition party before he could support it to win the poll.
The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, told one of our correspondents on telephone on Thursday that the recent visit to Obasanjo by Tinubu was part of efforts to ensure that the opposition party got the former President’s support ahead of the poll.
Though the APC spokesperson said that he was not fully privy to the topic of discussion between Obasanjo and Tinubu, he said that if the party leader had gone to visit the former President, it was about how the former president could help the opposition party win in the 2015 general elections.
He said, “I am not fully aware of what they (Obasanjo and Tinubu) discussed. But of course, did you expect they would discuss church matters? Clearly if he went to visit Obasanjo, it had to be about politics and the party. What else would you expect them to talk about?
“That would not be the first time the party chieftains would meet with the former President. There is no secret about it. We want the party to win in next year’s elections. That is it.”
When asked whether the former President might defect to the APC to help the party achieve its goal, Mohammed said, “Obasanjo does not need to defect to the APC before he could help the party.
“The former President needs not declare openly or defect to our party before he can help us. Someone went to visit him, he was chased out; Asiwaju Tinubu went to visit him and he was entertained. What are you talking about? What does that tell you?”
Obasanjo had in 2013 embraced the APC when some of the party’s national leaders and governors elected on its platform visited him in Abeokuta.
The APC leaders then sought Obasanjo’s support for the party’s bid to win the forthcoming elections.
Among Obasanjo’s visitors during the December 2013 visit were Tinubu, former APC Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari; former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff; Senator Osita Isunazor; and Senator Bukola Saraki.
Tinubu, who hailed Obasanjo’s contributions to nation-building, had lamented that the country was divided more than ever.
Tinubu had added that the APC had resolved to rescue Nigeria and appealed to the former President to lead the mission.
He had said, “You have come out of tribulation and held the highest position in this country. We are here because of your courage. Nobody can say he has information more than you. You have surmounted a number of crises. Nigeria is divided more than before; to realise stable Nigeria, we want to encourage you to continue to speak the truth. We are resolved and determined to rescue Nigeria. We want you as navigator.”
But the Peoples Democratic Party, which apparently sensed that the APC might finally get Obasanjo’s full support, on Wednesday, made entreaties to beg the former President.
Obasanjo, a former Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, had refused to identify with the party following series of disagreements he had with President Goodluck Jonathan and the running of the party.
The former President even as the chairman of BoT of the party shunned the meetings of the various organs of the party, including its National Executive Committee.
But speaking while receiving former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who defected from the Labour Party to the PDP in Abuja on Wednesday, the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’Azu, begged Obasanjo to return to the PDP.
Mu’azu, who was reacting to an earlier apology offered by Daniel, said every member of the party must beg the former President for forgiveness.
He described Obasanjo as a pragmatic leader, who he said hailed from a zone he claimed had produced the best educated people in the country.
Mu’azu said, “I want to join former Ogun State governor, I want to join my dear elder brother and indeed all the teeming members here to very sincerely apologise to our leader, to ourbaba,mybaba,General, President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to forgive us.
“We cannot continue. I know he has been very prayerful. In the Villa, I know he used to pray every morning. Very early, 5:30 to 6am, he is praying.
“And I know he keeps on praying all the time. As we say in our Lord’s Prayer: ‘Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who trespass against us’; Baba, you have to forgive us. I beg you in the name of the Almighty God, so that you too can be forgiven. We are your children. We are making mistakes, we have made mistakes, we have apologised.
“We will not agree even if you want to throw the baby away with the bath water, the baby will not go without you.
“So, please baba, we apologise. Come and lead us. Even the President (Goodluck Jonathan) is waiting for you. Come and lead us. You are our leader, we appreciate you, we thank you for your leadership.”

Governor Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso of Kano State has accused President Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government of not being sincere over its defence of the seized $9.3m and another $5.7m by the South African government.
He said the seized money by the South African government under the guise of procuring arms and ammunition to fight insurgency, contravened established rules and guidelines.
The governor said it was a clear violation of the due process in the procurement.
Kwakwanso spoke in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday after the public presentation of two laws-Ekiti Magistrate Court Law 2014 and Administration of Criminal Justice 2014-by his counterpart from Lagos, Raji Fashola (SAN).
Fashola, who described laws and constitutionality as the bedrock of any nation, said the application of the Cremation and Public Health Laws gave the state a breakthrough in its fight against the Ebola Virus Disease that broke out in the country recently.
Kwakwanso, who had earlier inaugurated the Ire Burnt Brick Industry revamped by Governor Kayode Fayemi, said Nigerians must rise up to protect judiciary for the sustenance of the country’s democracy.
The governor said, “As a former Minister of Defence, I am very conversant with the way and manner, and the due process that is required to procure any arms, ammunition or equipment, there are rules and guidelines. Arms and ammunition are not rice and beans that you can just go to the market and purchase.
“Many of us were concerned when the information filtered in. In fact, we didn’t believe it initially, but along the line, based on the defence of what happened, we realized that it was a bitter truth that such a thing happened: that money of that magnitude in an aircraft flown to another nation, I think so many things have gone wrong. I think it is high time for the Federal Government to sit up to its responsibilities to ensure that things are being done correctly.
“Yes, we need arms and ammunition; yes, we need security in this country, but even under that circumstance, there are rules and guidelines that must be respected.
“While we are trying to tackle insurgency, we must follow the due process. Even in the operation there are rules of engagement; they are very important to protect the lives and properties of innocent people.”
Kwakwanso wondered why it took the Federal Government three weeks to accept that over 200 schoolgirls were abducted by Boko Haram in Chibok.
He said so many things were wrong under the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“That is why we are confident that by 2015 the APC will take over because all that we have seen in insecurity, unemployment, education…There are so many schools closed down in the North. Our children cannot go to school because some are being stolen,” he lamented.

Sacked acting Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has returned to the State House of Assembly as the Speaker.
Fintiri was the Speaker of the Assembly, which masterminded the impeachment of former Governor Murtala Nyako in July.
In a separate development, Fintiri has thanked the people of the state for the ” tremendous support” they gave him during his two months and three weeks’ tenure as acting governor.
A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Solomon Kumangar, in Yola, on Thursday, the ex-acting governor said he had reverted to his position as the Speaker while still pursuing his appeal against his removal as acting governor.
He expressed appreciation to “the youth, women, elders, stakeholders, the political and working class” for their support.
Part of the statement read, “Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who has since resumed office as the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, also expresses gratitude to all state legislators, members of the National Assembly, the Peoples Democratic Party, the opposition and the overwhelming majority of the people, who not only shared his vision and zeal of rescuing and emancipating Adamawa State from the shackles of bad governance but rallied together with him to banish tyranny, tribalism and primordial sentiment from adamawa State.
“He pledges his life to the struggle to lift Adamawa State out of the morass in which it has found itself and that the whole issue is not about Fintiri but about Adamawa State.
“He said anyone who takes the democratic revolution that has taken place as personal is being selfish and does not love Adamawa State.”
On the judgment of the Abuja Federal High Court, which terminated his reign, Fintiri said he would pursue the appeal until it was disposed of, adding that he was sure of victory.

At least 5,000 people have been killed in religious violence in CAR this year.
A deadline for the resignation of interim President Catherine Samba Panza – issued by a Christian-dominated militia – expired this week.
The latest clashes are the fiercest since a UN force took over peacekeeping duties last month.
According to an official from the UN force quoted by the AFP news agency, the violence was sparked this week by a grenade attack that injured several pedestrians in Bangui.
The attacker, riding a motorcycle, “was chased, apprehended and killed by unidentified men,” the official is quoted as saying.
Further clashes then erupted in the city’s KM5 district.
At least five people are said to have died since the violence began on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, a local Red Cross official, Pastor Antoine Mbao Bogo, was quoted as saying that the agency’s workers had suspended operations to help the wounded and collect dead bodies from the streets.
“We have been forced to do so because of the direct threat to our staff members,” Bogo told Reuters news agency. He refused to say who had made the threats.
CAR has suffered ethnic and religious unrest for more than a year since mainly Muslim Seleka rebels seized power in the majority Christian country.
Muslim rebel leader Michel Djotodia resigned in January under diplomatic pressure, but violence between Christian and Muslim militia groups has continued.
Both groups have been accused of targeting civilians. Thousands have been killed and tens of thousands more have fled the country.
The UN says that about 1.3 million people – a quarter of the population – are in need of aid.

The first person to be diagnosed with Ebola within the US has died, Texas hospital officials have said.
Thomas Duncan, who caught the virus in his native Liberia, was being kept in isolation in a Dallas hospital and receiving experimental drugs.
Earlier the US announced new security procedures at entry points to check travellers for symptoms of the virus.
More than 3,000 people have died in West Africa in the worst Ebola outbreak yet.
While Duncan was the first person to be diagnosed within the US, three American aid workers and a photojournalist contracted the virus in Liberia.
“It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7:51 am,” a spokesman said in a statement.
The news came shortly after US Secretary of State John Kerry urged all nations to boost their response to combat the virus.
“More countries can and must step up,” he said in a joint press conference with his British counterpart Philip Hammond.
The US has pledged as many as 4,000 troops to the region, while the UK is sending 750 military personnel to Sierra Leone.
Duncan, a Liberian national, tested positive in Dallas, Texas, on 30 September, 10 days after arriving on a flight from Monrovia via Brussels.
After going to hospital with symptoms, he told them he had been to Liberia but was sent home with antibiotics.
Four days later, he was placed in isolation and given an experimental drug to treat Ebola, but his condition continued to worsen.
Following Duncan’s diagnosis, the first case of contagion outside that continent was confirmed in Spain, where a nurse who treated an Ebola victim in Madrid contracted the virus herself.
Ebola spreads through contact with the bodily fluids of someone who has the virus and the only way to stop an outbreak is to isolate those who are infected.
Earlier on Wednesday, US officials announced travellers from Ebola-affected countries will face increased security scrutiny at American airports.
The Department of Homeland Security has ordered agents at airports and other ports to “observe” arrivals for potential signs of Ebola infection.
The new security measures, rolled out by the Transportation Security Administration, will reportedly take effect this weekend or early next week

THE Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress caucuses in the House of Representatives are set for another showdown when the House resumes on October 14 .
The issue that will spark off the row is the latest seizure by the South African authorities of $5.7m meant for arms purchase on behalf of the Federal Government by a private company .
Investigations byThe PUNCHon Tuesday revealed that the APC lawmakers were determined to ensure that the latest botched arms deal and that of September 5, 2014 were debated to determine those behind them.
But a source close to the House leadership said that the PDP caucus would ensure that the arms deals were not listed for discussion by members.
He said, “ We are very much aware that the opposition lawmakers will raise the issues when we resume on October 14. I can assure you that the issues may not enter the order paper but if they do, there would be a serious row. But of course, the majority will still carry the day. What you need to understand is that we know how to handle the opposition lawmakers.”
The Deputy House Majority Leader, Leo Ogor and the Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, in separate interviews on Tuesday, also hinted that a stormy session was imminent.
Ogor told one of our correspondents in Abuja that the PDP caucus in the House had given President Goodluck Jonathan full backing to procure arms through any means to enable the military to end the Boko Haram insurgency in parts of the country.
He said, “If smuggling arms into the country is the only alternative to defeat the insurgents, we owe no apology to anyone.
“President Jonathan can go the extra mile to import arms and ammunition.
“We will support him all the way if we must stop the slaughtering of our citizens like animals.”
Ogor claimed that the Federal Government was under pressure to get arms to combat terrorism, adding that it (government) would take all measures possible to bring arms into the country.
He argued that since the primary essence of government was to protect the lives of its citizenry, it would not use the lack of arms as an excuse not to play its roles.
The lawmaker said, “As a people, we have to look at the challenges that procuring arms through normal routes pose to the country.
“We are determined, as a government, to protect Nigerians no matter how much it will cost.
“Following the legal routes or due process has become a problem. Some of the arms and ammunition are not available at our disposal even when we paid for them.
“Therefore, we will do whatever it takes to fight the insurgents. How we get our arms and ammunition is not the subject matter here.
“What is important is that we must defeat Boko Haram, which is not getting its arms through conventional routes.”
On calls that the controversial arms deals should be investigated, he said, “Investigation can go on, but that will not stop us from buying arms.”
But the APC caucus which had demanded an investigation into the first $9.3m arms scandal , said the latest one had vindicated its call for a probe.
Gbajabiamila stated that, but for the current Sallah break, the APC caucus had planned to revisit the motion for a debate of the $9.3m arms deal by way of a substantive motion.
Gbajabiamila added, “We wanted to move a motion for the rescission of the decision of the House.
“However, the latest development has given us an added slant to the whole episode. It calls for urgent investigation. We will bring up another motion and let us see how they will reject it again.”
The APC lawmaker deplored the “worsening situation of things in the country,” warning that Nigerians would have themselves to blame in the future if they continue to keep silent.
“We cannot continue to fold our arms and allow things to get worse. Investigation is it; we have to investigate these strange happenings,” he said.
Hours after Gbajabiamila spoke with one of our correspondents, the APC, through its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, urged the Jonathan -led Federal Government to stop embarrassing Nigeria in the comity of nations.
The party asked the President to urgently address Nigerians on the embarrassments to which his administration was causing the country.
A statement by the APC read, ‘’Again, Mr. President, Nigerians are urging you to please come clean over these cash-for-arms scandals. They want you to answer critical questions on the legality of your administration’s repeated conduct.
“They want to know the identities of the two Nigerians who were arrested with an Israeli in South Africa over the first illegal deal, especially since the Israeli has been named.
“Nigerians want to know why the purported arms procurement for the government is done illegally between private companies that are neither known nor registered for dealing in arms? And why is the movement of mony not transparently documented for what they really are, if they are truly for legitimate purposes?
“They want to know whether indeed the weapons which the government is seeking so furiously to procure are for the battle against Boko Haram or for a sinister motive, considering the desperation of your administration to continue to rule at all costs and by any means possible.
“They want to know whether every Nigerian should begin to fear what will happen in the days and weeks leading to the forthcoming general elections, against the backdrop of your administration and party’s do-or-die politics.
“Mr. President, if the funds involved in the latest seizure were sent through bank transfer, can the government explain why (Ayo) Oritsejafor’s plane was stuffed with cash and transported to South Africa? Can your administration’s embarrassing explanation that it is customary for other country’s security agencies, including with MOSSAD, KGB and CIA, to cart plane loads of cash across the world to purchase black market weapons hold any more water now? These are some of the questions Nigerians are asking, not an untenable spin by untruthful government officials.’’
The PDP however fired back at the APC, saying its comments amounted to a show of shame.
The party said it remained solidly behind Jonathan in the steps he had taken to ensure the safety of Nigerians in spite of APC’s connivance with foreign interests to embarrass his government.
It said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, that “any responsible opposition which has the interest and welfare of the people at heart would concentrate on proffering solution to the problems of the nation instead of seeking political capital at all times.”
The statement read in part, said, “We state categorically that the actions preferred by some foreign nations against our dear country as we seek solution to our security challenges are unacceptable and totally uncalled for, especially given our cordial relationship with them and the roles Nigeria and Nigerians citizens played in assisting them in their internal struggles.
“Given the rush with which the APC attacked the Presidency, it is clear that they are working hand in glove with foreign interests in a concerted effort to tarnish the image of our dear nation, ridicule our government and frustrate genuine efforts towards ending the insecurity challenges we face as a nation.
“We have an opposition that has been conniving with foreign interests to destroy the image and unity of our country as a means to achieve political control.’’

A Lagos-based pastor, Mr. Kayode Jacobs, says he has been chosen by God to become the next governor of Lagos State.

He admitted that although he had little money, he could defeat the Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro; and Jimi Agbaje to clinch the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Jacobs, who runs Family and Relationships Ministry in Lagos, said he had been in politics for over 20 years having worked with a former Minister of Information, Mr. Dapo Sarunmi.
The pastor, who is an indigene of Badagry, said he had the backing of a large number of pastors in the state as well as massive grass roots following in 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas.
He said, “This is my David moment. You see, nobody expected David to become king of Israel because he was the last son but when God would favour him, he picked him from obscurity. I am sure that God’s favour will see me through.”
When asked why he was gunning for governorship instead of lower political positions, the journalist turned pastor, said the governorship position was the only office he could make a huge impact.
He said, “I don’t want to be a senator or a House of Representatives member because I don’t want to be debating and making laws. I need a position whereby I can make a direct impact on the lives of the people. Also, this was the position I was directed to contest for.”
Jacobs said Governor Babatunde Fashola’s policies were not people-friendly. He said Fashola’s government only favoured the rich while the poor were neglected.
He noted that Fashola’s achievements in terms of public infrastructure would not stand the test of time.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Abuja restated that the activities of terrorist groups across the world had nothing to do with Islam.
The President stated this when a delegation of the Muslim community, led by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, visited him at his official residence in the Presidential Villa, in commemoration of the Eid-el-Kabir.
Jonathan maintained that there was nothing Islamic about the atrocities being perpetrated by Boko Haram in Nigeria or Islamic State militants in Iraq, who had claimed to be fighting for the propagation of Islam.
“What is happening globally now has no religious basis. Only yesterday, a British aid worker was slaughtered by IS and that is not Islamic.
“Boko Haram killing innocent children and women in marketplaces, in mosques and schools definitely has nothing to do with religion,” he said.
The President noted that this year’s Sallah celebration was significant, citing certain natural coincidences, which, according to him, showed that something good was happening to Nigeria.
“This year is quite significant in terms of the celebration of Sallah, because the Day of Arafat coincided with a Friday, and, from what I was told, it takes a long time to have that coincidence.
“And remembering the fact that 2014 is our centenary year, it shows that something good is happening to this country.
“We may have our challenges as other nations, but when things begin to happen in a particular way, I begin to see light at the end of the tunnel.
“A number of things that have to do with our belief system suppose to encourage us to see our neighbours as ourselves,” he said.
While congratulating Muslims all over the world, Jonathan urged them to use the period to seek God’s mercy for those hiding behind religion to perpetrate evil.
He restated his belief in Nigeria, emphasising that the country had a lot to offer not only to its citizens but also to the entire world.
“Whatever obstacles we see are very ephemeral and part of history of nation building.
“If you read the history of all nations, there is no nation that does not pass through some challenges.
“But, they got over them and moved ahead; I think we are getting over our problems,” he said.
Earlier, the vice-president had prayed for peace and unity in the country.
He also prayed that Allah would grant the President the strength, wisdom and good health to lead the country out of its current challenges.
Among the vice-president’s entourage were the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki; the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba, and a former Peoples Democratic Party National Chairman, Bello Haliru.
Others included Primate, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), the Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Ghali Na’Abba; the Deputy Chief Imam of Federal Capital Territory, Sheik Ahmed Onilewura.

On this day, the pilgrims make their way from Mecca to a nearby hillside, Arafat, to pray for peace.

President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to remain patriotic in their support for the Armed Forces fighting the insurgents in the North-eastern part of Nigeria.
The president condemned the actions of the terrorists, saying it is now obvious that they do not mean well for anyone.
In his Independence Day broadcast on Wednesday, Jonathan thanked Nigerians for the support and faith they have shown in the country, highlighting what his administration is doing to halt terrorist activities in the country and what it is doing to relieve the victims.
“While we continue to deploy our resources in the fight against the terrorists, we do recognise the great toll the conflict is taking on our people,” he said.
“This is why, to assist the afflicted, we have launched the Victims Support Fund, an independent multi-sectoral charity, which will aggressively solicit resources to augment Government’s statutory intervention, in bringing succour to the injured, the displaced and the bereaved.
“In partnership with Nigerian business leaders and international partners, we have also introduced the Safe Schools Initiative which is aimed at promoting safe environments for education nationwide, starting with the North East region.”
He assured that the government’s overall objective is to do all it can to sustain the momentum of economic advancement in the North-eastern region of the country “despite the machinations of the terrorists and their sponsors.”
He enjoined Nigerians to continue keeping faith with the government on the fight notwithstanding political, religious or other such affiliations.
Moving on in the broadcast, the president pointed out that he has delivered on promises he made during the last independence speech.

First he mentioned the Sovereign National Conference, describing it as a centenary gift to Nigerians.
“We have successfully delivered on that promise as we established the 2014 National Conference headed by Justice Legbo Kutigi,” Jonathan said. “After months of deliberations, which did not come without its challenges, the conference concluded its assignment and has handed its Report to me.”
He assured that he has made a firm commitment that the government would act on the recommendations of the conference.
“ This, I have started by setting up the Ministerial Committee headed by the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation to work out the modalities for implementing the Report. Every promise I make, God willing, I will see to its fulfilment. I assure you, we shall implement the report,” he said.
He said a major lesson the confab has instilled in the mind of Nigerians is that a multi-ethnic country like must learn to embrace painstaking dialogue until consensus is established.
“To me, the National Conference is the greatest centenary gift to our country that we must cherish and sustain,” he said.
Robust Democracy
Next he commented on the achievement of 16 uninterrupted years of democratic rule, emphasising that the elections that have been conducted under his administration have been regarded both locally and internationally as transparent, free and fair.
“Our Administration has made a commitment to ensure that we build and sustain a democratic infrastructure anchored on free and fair elections. International and local observers have attested to the positive evolution of electoral credibility and we cannot afford to relent,” he said.
“We will continue to ensure that the will of the electorate prevails so that political leaders would be reminded at all times that there is a day of reckoning when they have to go back to the people at the polls. Election days must not be days of violence and death. We must remain vigilant to ensure that our electoral process is characterised by peace, security and transparency.”
He enjoined the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), all security agencies, politicians and the electorate to work conscientiously and peacefully, together, to consolidate on the gains of the recent elections.
“Free and fair elections have come to stay; nothing else will be acceptable to our people,” he declared.
Local Content
On the economy, the president mentioned the significant moves that has been made in the power, agricultural and oil and gas sectors saying the consolidation of these and many others has secured a place for the country as the biggest economy in Africa.
“Our power sector reform is on course with the ultimate objective of generating enough electricity to power our homes, industries and businesses,” he said. “We are making giant strides in the Agricultural Sector which we are re-positioning to diversify our economy. We will continue to upgrade our infrastructure to make life easier for all and create an enabling environment for enterprise to flourish.”
He explained that over the last four years, the implementation of the Nigerian Content Act in the Oil and Gas Sector has ensured major increase in the participation of indigenous Oil and Gas companies in the industry.
He said several critical infrastructure projects have been commissioned and commenced, pointing out that the level of indigenous asset ownership has hugely increased while utilisation of Nigerian-owned and built assets such as marine vessels and rigs is being progressively enforced.
“There has been maximised local value addition by encouraging the manufacture of equipment components and parts within the country,” he explained.
“There has also been massive growth in indigenous participation in the provision of goods and services to the upstream sector from 10 percent to 60 percent within the last four years.
“Today, following the rebasing of our economy, every international monitoring and ratings agency now acknowledges Nigeria as the largest economy in Africa, with a Gross Domestic Product of five hundred and ten billion dollars ($510 billion) which also places us as the 26th largest economy in the world.”
Access To Funds For SMEs
He mentioned that earlier in the year, the administration launched the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) and the National Enterprise Development Programme (NEDEP) with the stated objective of fast tracking inclusive growth, job creation, enterprise development and industrialisation.
“The success of these policies is already evident in the increased value addition in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors,” he said.
He said the one of the objectives of the administration was to make the country a regional hub for automobile production and that the objective is still being achieved since the country can now boast of made-in-Nigeria vehicles.
“A number of foreign auto manufacturers have established plants in Nigeria, complementing the laudable efforts of our local vehicle manufacturers who have also demonstrated great innovation and competitiveness,” he said.
On access to funds for small and medium scale enterprises, he said the administration has launched a special support programme for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises with an initial intervention fund of N220 billion.
“This is in addition to the Presidential Job Creation Board which I inaugurated recently with the charge to create three million jobs annually,” Jonathan said.
“In demonstration of our Administration’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit, we have commenced the new mortgage re-finance programme with the establishment of the Nigerian Mortgage Re-finance Company. It is expected that, in addition to creating additional housing units across the country, this initiative also represents a huge job creation opportunity.

“We have recorded notable success in the social sector. Nigeria has been globally acknowledged for reducing extreme hunger by more than half, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) formally presenting the country with an award for achieving the Millennium Development Goal on Hunger three years ahead of the 2015 target date set for the Millennium Development Goals.”
Agriculture
He said the progress made in the agricultural sector especially, is a results of deliberate government policy to increase capacity in the country’s agricultural sector of which the first step was to address and eliminate the graft in fertilizer procurement system and ensure that the product gets directly to the farmer.
“We are expanding our irrigation infrastructure to ensure that our farmers have sufficient water supply for dry season farming,” he said.
“A benefit of these combined actions is that our national food import bill has declined from 1.1 trillion naira (6.9 billion dollars) in 2009 to 684.7 billion naira (4.35 billion dollars) by December 2013, and continues to decline.”
Education
On Education, he said modern hybrid schools are being provided for less privileged children across the country, resulting in significant increase in the national school enrolment figure
He said in order to further enhance access to education at the tertiary level, fourteen new Federal Universities have been established; and, to encourage persons of exceptional abilities, a Presidential Scholarship Scheme based strictly on excellence and merit has been established.
Infrastructure
Jonathan said: “On infrastructure, we are building roads, bridges, and new rail lines to make it easier to traverse Nigeria and increase the integration of our people and our ability to do business with each other. In this regard, we have commenced the process of building the Second Niger Bridge. The Loko-Oweto Bridge over River Benue in Nasarawa and Benue States, will significantly reduce travel time by road between Northern and Southern Nigeria. The on-going dredging of the River Niger up to Baro in Niger State is opening up large parts of the Nigerian hinterland to maritime activity.
“The Zungeru and Mambilla Hydro-electric power projects are on course, and the Kashimbilla dam which we started a few years ago, is nearing completion. The successful privatisation of our power sector will in the long run enhance industrial growth. Policies such as this and others have raised Nigeria to the enviable status of being the number one recipient of Foreign Direct Investment in Africa in the past year.
“The result of this infrastructure drive is that two and a half million jobs have been created over the past two years. This is a record, which we are committed to improve upon to continue to provide jobs for our youth.
“An unprecedented number of Airports across the country, are not only being reconstructed at the same time, but being re-equipped and reassessed with emphasis on maintaining global standards.
Ebola
The president thanked the ministry of health and all Nigerians for the parts they all played in keeping the deadly Ebola virus at bay. He pointed out that the Ebola battle is still raging elsewhere in our sub-region and therefore enjoin all our Nigerians to continue to adhere strictly to all the guidelines that have been given by health officials to keep Ebola out of our country.
“I appreciate and welcome the spirit of collaboration, unity and partnership with which we confronted the threat of the Ebola Virus Disease. I thank all Nigerians for working together to prevent what could have become a major epidemic. I particularly thank the medical personnel, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice,” he said.
“This is the spirit which we must demonstrate at all times as we face up to our challenges as a nation: one people, united by a common resolve, in the pursuit of one common national interest.”
He said one major goal of his administration is for all Nigerians to have access to the good things of life.
