Politics › 2019: Tinubu, Governors May Be Seeking Amaechi's Removal As Buhari's Campaign DG by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:14am On Jul 01, 2018 |
...Asiwaju tells ex-Rivers governor to resign How President upturned Imo congressAbimbola Akosile Less than a week after the All Progressives Congress (APC) held its national convention amid deep disaffection, a fresh crisis appears to be brewing in the party. Some governors in conjunction with a former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as well as some top security officers are alleged to have commenced moves against the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, principally to replace him as Director-General of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 campaign. This development is said to be connected to scheming ahead of the 2023 presidential run.
Many party members see the emerging situation as a huge challenge for the new leadership of the party under Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
While the power play in the APC assumed a new dimension, details of how President Muhammadu Buhari intervened in the recent crisis that rocked the Imo State chapter of the party emerged at the weekend. There was growing discontent as members rejected the president’s seemingly coercive intervention.
THISDAY gathered from impeccable sources at the weekend that the plot to displace Amaechi as the campaign DG had been on long before the national convention but was kept under wraps till after the exercise, as some of the actors had waited to see how the convention would pan out.
One of the reasons Amaechi is being opposed, according to the sources, is that many APC leaders feel he has a presidential ambition in 2023 and that the platform could put him in a vantage position by fortifying his ambition with vital contacts and network.
Although some of the northern governors, who ordinarily are Amaechi’s friends, are believed not to be averse to his ambition, if established to be true, they are said to nurse reservations about his closeness to el-Rufai. The relationship is being interpreted to mean that the Kaduna governor might be Amaechi’s favourite candidate as running mate in the event that he chooses to run in 2023. This is alleged to be why Tinubu is moving fast to oust Amaechi as the campaign DG. The former Lagos State governor has never hidden his interest in the country’s top job. He has taken steps to rally northern governors by dangling the running mate ticket before them, without showing preference for anyone for now.
The northern governors are believed to see their chances brighter with Tinubu than Amaechi, who they feel might have settled for el-Rufai.
The move against Amaechi as the president’s campaign DG, THISDAY, gathered, is being anchored on a bourgeoning narrative that the position should be held by a serving governor. There is also a position being advanced that the campaign director-general should, apart from being a governor, be chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, which narrows the job to Zamfara State Governor, Yari Aziz.
THISDAY sources close to Tinubu said there was a short meeting between him and Amaechi at the weekend in Lagos, where Tinubu allegedly asked Amaechi to drop his position as Buhari’s campaign DG. But when the former Rivers State governor disagreed, Tinubu was said to have asked him to resign his position as minister if he must retain his appointment as Buhari’s campaign DG.
Sources said Amaechi had immediately reeled off names of political parties’ DGs, who did not resign their former positions as at the time they took the job of DG in previous elections, noting that there is nothing conflicting between the two positions, to the best of his knowledge. He was said to have also mentioned at the meeting that the talk about his presidential ambition was the imagination of certain persons in the party, because he had never shared such information with anyone.
Meanwhile, the on-going celebration in Imo State by Governor Rochas Okorocha was said to have been made possible by Buhari, who was allegedly uncomfortable with Senator Osita Izunazo and ordered the new leadership of the party to declare the Okorocha faction of the party winner of the congresses in the state.
THISDAY gathered from reliable party sources that when some top APC members noticed the president’s body language, they approached him and advised against unilaterally declaring a faction of the party winner of an inconclusive congress. Such a move, the members believed, would contradict Buhari’s professed stance against injustice.
But the president was said to have dismissed the admonitions, saying as long as it is against Izunazo, they should go ahead and declare the Okorocha faction winner. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2018/07/01/2019-tinubu-govs-may-be-seeking-amaechis-removal-as-buharis-campaign-dg/amp/

Politics › Plateau Killings: External, Internal Forces Against Nigeria - COAS, Buratai Says by BeeBeeOoh(op): 11:03am On Jun 30, 2018 |
Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai said some external forces may be behind the recent violence on the Plateau and in some North-Central States to destabilise the country.
“We’re not ruling out the possibility of external forces destabilising the country,” Buratai declared at a press briefing in Maiduguri on Friday to flag off the 2018 Army Day celebration.
He described the killing on the Plateau as dastard. He said the army has taken steps to prevent escalation of the violence. He said the army was equal to the task of ensuring that nobody is allowed to continue in the violence. “We have deployed more troops as reinforcement.”
He also canvassed for development of long-term solution to some social problems that may have fueled the violence. “We must be thinking of solving some inherent problems that may have caused the crisis,” he counseled.
He said the army decided to hold its celebration in Borno this year to consolidate on the successes recorded in the counterinsurgency operation. He said the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), which commenced yesterday would be used to showcase the combat capability of the army.
“The celebration is to consoli- date our success in the fight against Boko Haram. The situation that was prevailing in this country in 2014 and 2015 was grave. We believe bringing the celebration here will further consolidate our successes. We want to show that the Nigerian Army has lived up to its bidding,” he explained.
He said the Nigerian Army Day Celebration came into being in 1976, adding that the celeberation was a reminder of the sacrifices made by troops of the Nigerian Army to keep the nation together. http://sunnewsonline.com/external-forces-involved-plateau-killings-army/

Politics › Miyetti Allah Slams Fulani Lawmakers For Failing To Protect Herdsmen.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:04am On Jun 30, 2018 |
The Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore has lambasted Fulani lawmakers in the National Assembly for failing to protect the interest of herdsmen.
The Secretary-General of the group, Saleh Al-Hassan, said this during an interview on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, on Friday.
He said, “Our elite have failed to protect us. Our National Assembly members that are of Fulani background are just there collecting money. They can’t protect their people. They don’t want to come out to say the truth.”
While insisting that herdsmen don’t bear arms, Al-Hassan said there would not be peace until those who feel cheated are given justice, adding that any attempt to chase them out of the country would fail.
Al-Hassan added, “If you have injustice in the land, you can only end up with negativity. There is nowhere you will find citizens being denied their economic rights and then you expect that there will be peace in that kind of place. What we are saying is give us a share of the land resources in this country.”
He also said herdsmen were the victims of the killings in Plateau and Benue states, saying no one had been brought to book for the killings of Fulani in Plateau State.
He said it was for this reason that the group decided to drag the state government before the ECOWAS court, where he said they were claiming N40bn for the killing of 5,000 herdsmen on the Plateau.
“So, no Berom man should begin to raise any moral justification. They are the ones that don’t want peace,” he added. http://punchng.com/miyetti-allah-slams-fulani-lawmakers-for-failing-to-protect-herdsmen/

Politics › Osinbajo Calls For Establishment Of State Police To End Killings.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:19am On Jun 30, 2018 |
The latest mass killings on the Plateau and the unrelenting spate of kidnappings in parts of the country may have caused the federal government to rethink its opposition to the issue of state police, with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday calling for their establishment.
Osinbajo, who stated this position yesterday in Lagos while delivering a lecture at the special parliamentary session in commemoration of the 3rd Anniversary of the 8th Assembly of Lagos State, contended that state and community policing by locals who understand the terrain and the local languages would no doubt address the problem of insecurity in the country.
Osinbajo made a case for state police to tackle the present security challenges confronting the nation, saying that “local policing is very important as part of our security architecture”.
Although the topic for the lecture was ‘Strengthening Legislative Institutions: Panacea for Eradicating Poverty’, the vice president narrowed the topic down to ‘Stronger State and the Eradication of Poverty.’
As against the general belief that the creation of a conducive environment by the government for business to thrive will check mass poverty, Osinbajo, however, stated categorically that poverty can be eradicated by having strong states with strong judiciary, executive and legislature that would channel the resources of the state to create wealth for the citizens.
“The three arms of government in the states must work proactively for the economic development of its citizens. To achieve this there must be devolution of powers to the states to enable them control their resources”, Osinbajo said.
He cited the great feat achieved by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who as Premier of the then Western Region recorded achievements that were acknowledged worldwide most of which have endured to this time, relying solely on revenue from taxes and cocoa.
Osinbajo also called for devolution of power and restructuring, but he stated that even without restructuring, it was possible to create a strong state without any major constitutional changes.
He cited how through the collaboration between the three arms of government in Lagos from the reign of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu to the present governor, the state has been able to win series of cases at the Supreme Court which have given more powers not only to Lagos State but many other states as well.
According to him, the Lagos Assembly has pushed the frontiers of federalism by passing laws which have strengthened federalism in Nigeria.
He noted that for outstanding economic growth, there is the need to focus on education, healthcare and the provision of jobs through deliberate programmes. According to him, pumping more resources into these sectors will benefit the majority of the citizens.
The vice president stated further that the present government was working round the clock to create an environment for business to thrive, through a micro-credit scheme especially for those at the lower rungs of the economic ladder in order to lift them out of poverty.
In his response, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode commended the leadership of the state Assembly for their team dynamics and infrastructural development within the Assembly. https://leadership.ng/2018/06/30/fg-mulls-state-police-to-end-killings/

Politics › Fuel Scarcity Looms As NUPENG Issues 7-day Ultimatum.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:40pm On Jun 29, 2018 |
An industrial action may be looming in the oil industry as the Port Harcourt zone of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has issued a 7-day ultimatum to one of the oil companies operating in the zone for alleged unlawful disengagement of some of its members.
Chairman of the Port Harcourt zone of NUPENG, Alex Agwanwor at a media briefing in Port Harcourt said the ultimatum was an outcome of an extensive deliberation by the union over the matter.
Agwanwor said three hundred of their members were unlawfully disengaged by the company, stressing that the move was against labour laws.
He called on the government to prevail on the company to rescind the decision, failure which their members in the zone will withdraw their services indefinitely.
“After an exhaustive meeting and deliberations by the Zonal Council of this union covering the 10 states in the South have resolved that a 7-day ultimatum has been issued for the unlawful disengagement and anti labour practices of some oil serving companies operating within the Port Harcourt Zone.
“The leadership of the Union wish to register our displeasure over the unwarranted disengagement of our members on board of a rig belonging to one of the oil servicing companies and the hostage taking of the workers by the management of the company.
“The management’s action is anti labour, uncivilized and condemnable and without giving recourse to their agreement they went ahead to terminate the contract of over three hundred of our members.
“We hereby give 7 days ultimatum to OES Deep See Offshore and other anti union companies who are fond of violating Labour Laws.
“If nothing is done by these companies to reverse their anti labour practices we will embark on an indefinite strike and we will be left with no choice than to withdraw our service.
“We will make sure this affects everywhere our members are involved including refineries and oil depots,” Alex said.
On his part, the National Vice President of NUPENG, Bassey Harry expressed the support of the National leadership of union to the decision of the zone. http://dailypost.ng/2018/06/29/fuel-scarcity-looms-nupeng-issues-7-day-ultimatum/

Business › FG To Review 500% Tariff On Alcoholic Beverages - Ngige Reveals by BeeBeeOoh(op): 12:07pm On Jun 29, 2018*. Modified: 5:18pm On Jun 29, 2018 |
Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, says the federal government will review the newly introduced 500 percent excise duty on alcoholic beverages.
Samuel Olowokere, director of press, ministry of labour and employment, made this known in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
The minister was quoted to have made the comment when members of the National Union of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Joint Employers and Workers Association visited him in his office.
“This will save the sector from imminent collapse and forestall the consequent loss of about two hundred thousand jobs,” Ngige said.
“You have written to the federal government through me that the increase in excise duty on alcohol and beverages will create job losses.
“Because once you add a new cost and pass it on, there will be consumer resistance, resulting in low patronage. Whereas the products coming from overseas that are being smuggled in which are cheap, will take over the market. It is a statement of fact.
“I have passed your complaints and luckily we have a listening President who wants the good of all Nigerians. The President will definitely ask the minister of finance and the economic management team to review the tariff.”
Ngige said Nigeria cannot afford to create poverty and job losses while promoting abundant jobs in other countries.
He, however, said that job losses are not part of the present administration and would not support the 500 percent tariff increase.
The minister said the economic and recovery growth plan (ELGP) of the government was partly tailored towards job creation rather than losses.
He said the cardinal place job creation and protection occupy informed the administration’s fidelity to non-declaration of redundancy in the federal ministries and agencies, hence no retrenchment of workers.
“This is not to say that we do not know that in some places available jobs have more than available staff members to match them but this is a compassionate administration,” he said.
“The President does not want to throw many families into anguish. The President always said that he was a salary earner in all his working life.
“You can also see that we did not place an embargo on recruitment as we used to have years ago even while we were under recession.
“The federal government has been replacing staff members who exited as well as creating new jobs in the public sector. But this has to be complemented with the private sector jobs to have a full blend.” https://www.thecable.ng/fg-will-review-500-tariff-on-alcoholic-beverages-says-ngigeLalasticlala, Mynd44
