Politics › Corruption: Negotiate With Looters - Bishop Kukah Tells FG by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:16am On Jun 23, 2018 |
The Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Mathew Hassan Kukah, has advised the federal government of Nigeria to change its tactics in the anti-corruption fight against looters.
Kukah said the government should negotiate with looters of the nation’s treasury in order to recover stolen funds.
The cleric made this known while speaking at the 29th and 30th Convocation lecture of the University of Jos on Friday.
Bishop Kukah explained that some countries had negotiated with corrupt officials to recover stolen funds and it worked for them, hence calling on Nigerian government to adopt the same tactic.
According to him “Fighting corruption as a whole is beyond just recovering stolen funds, although it is necessary to punish treasury looters and corrupt officials, to solve the whole problem would involve tackling it from the roots and that means the institutional framework.
“Investigate what they have stolen, then call them and negotiate how much of it can be recovered, while you put frameworks in place to holistically solve the problem.
"Corruption is not only a Nigerian thing. Former presidents of nations like America, France, Israel, South Africa, among others, have been removed due to corruption charges. Yet, their countries are working.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/06/23/corruption-negotiate-looters-bishop-kukah-tells-nigerian-govt/

Politics › PDP, Ohaneze Ndigbo Demand Immediate Release Of Senator Abaribe by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:38am On Jun 23, 2018 |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed fears over the safety of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, (PDP Abia), who was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The party lamented that the Gestapo-style arrest of Abaribe has further confirmed the earlier alarm that the APC-led Federal Government had commenced a total clampdown on the opposition and perceived opponents of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 re-election bid.
In a statement issued by its Spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP said the clampdown on Senator Abaribe was part of the moves to intimidate and emasculate members of the National Assembly who are known for their outspokenness against the constitutional violations and misrule of the APC administration.
The party said that the Federal Government had given no reasons for the arrest and detention of Senator Abaribe, who had been kept incommunicado without access to his lawyers and associates.
“The party also notes the apprehension of Nigerians following numerous alleged plots by the Federal Government to frame up other lawmakers, including Senate President Bukola Saraki, Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremmadu, as well as Senators Dino Melaye and Shehu Sani.
“Nigerians can now see that our dear nation is fast descending into a fascist state where constitutionally guaranteed freedom of speech no longer obtains and citizens are marked, arrested and detained on the whims and caprices of those in power.
The PDP asked the DSS to immediately declare Senator Abaribe’s whereabouts, as well as the charge against him, adding, “the laws of our nation are clear on the process of arrest and prosecution of any citizen and not recourse to clampdown and intimidation.”
On its part the leadership of the Ohaneze Ndi Igbo said the prevailing circumstances at the time of the disappearance of Nnamdi Kanu were beyond the contemplation of the law that a surety can guarantee the production of an accused person.
In a statement issued by its President General, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Ohaneze said the army “in the name of Operation Python Dance” invaded Nnamdi’s home and destabilised normalcy there.
The statement reads: “It is only the security agency that can disclose Nnamdi’s whereabouts.
“Senator Abaribe has no capacity, nor has any surety in the circumstances to know the whereabouts of Nnamdi Kanu. What happened in Umahia was an invasion, a war of a kind.
“Nnamdi may have been killed or captured in the imbroglio or even escaped into hiding.
“The onus lies on the security forces to disclose his whereabouts. The judiciary is beginning to tow the line of the executive by throwing the law overboard in matters that affect the South East. We are all equal before the law”. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2018/06/22/pdp-ohaneze-demand-immediate-release-of-senator-abaribe/amp/

Politics › Attack On Herdsmen: Christian Youths On Death Row Must Die - MURIC Replies CAN by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:35pm On Jun 22, 2018 |
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has frowned on an appeal made by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to President Muhammadu Buhari asking him to intervene in the death sentences passed on five Christian youths in Adamawa State.
The five convicts were sentenced to death for culpable homicide by Justice Abdul-Azeez Waziri of a High Court in the state.
They were alleged to have, on June 1, 2017, ‘willfully and intentionally conspired and attacked three herdsmen rearing cattle at Kadamun village in Demsa Local Government Area.’ One of the herdsmen, Adamu Buba, was killed and his body was thrown into a river.
In a statement on Friday, MURIC director, Prof Ishaq Akintola, described CAN’s action as an attempt to obstruct the course of justice using its connections in the Federal Government.
The organization said, “It is infantile, ludicrous and unacceptable. It is an attempt to aid and abet criminality while pointing accusing fingers at innocent Muslims. It is outrageously outrageous. This should not have come up at all. It is absolute bunkum.”
MURIC argued that at least four Muslim kidnappers were sentenced to life imprisonment by the same judge, in the same court and on the same day but CAN said nothing about them.
It added, “Again, where was CAN when the Fulani kidnappers of Chief Olu Falae were sentenced to life imprisonment about two years ago?”
Continuing, it asked, “Why is CAN being so parochial? How can we have different laws for different people? Which one does CAN want to follow: the rule of law where every Nigerian is equal before the law or the ‘rule of escape’ where Christians, rich and powerful citizens are above the law? Why is CAN eager to set them free if the organization is not their sponsor or very close to their sponsor or sponsors?”
Akintola expressed dismay at what he called, “well educated Christian leaders can openly canvass for selective justice. CAN wants criminals and killers among Christians to go scot free so they can kill more Muslims but the same CAN will not put in a single word for criminals among Muslims who were sentenced to life imprisonment.”
“Can you see what acrobatic religiousity has done to Nigeria?” What will happen if Muslim leaders also use their influence (and that is if they have any) to secure freedom for Muslims who commit murder? How can we find any solution to these killings? Our own stand is that whoever commits an offence, whether he is a Muslim or a Christian, should be punished in order to serve as a deterrent to others. Let the law take its due course. Sentence Muslims to death if they kill. Sentence Christians to death if they kill.
“There are criminals among Muslims and there are criminals among Christians but for any religious leader to seek immunity for criminals in his flock makes mockery of the judicial system. We are all looking for an end to killings in this country. People are just being killed like rams everywhere. It is therefore shocking to hear a group which claims to be holier-than-thou attempting to shelter killers because they happen to belong to the same faith.
“Interestingly, CAN has been in the forefront of those complaining. The umbrella Christian body was pointing accusing fingers at Fulani herdsmen and Muslims but the outcome of investigations now prove otherwise. Several members of Benue Christian militia have been caught with arms. They are being funded and trained secretly by the state government. A fake military barracks has been discovered by the army.
“Those who secretly fund a militia group are capable of doing anything. Those who set up fake military barracks can do and undo. We strongly suspect that these hitmen have been instructed to disguise as Muslims to stage attacks on Christian targets in order to hang the crime on Muslims.
“Otherwise what informed the ugly scenario in a Benue church where two Catholic bishops were killed along with other worshippers? Those being tried for this heinous crime are all Christians: Manga Husseini, David Akenawe, Agada Tsesaa, Tarza Orvanya & Ngyohov Shin. How far will some people go just to tarnish the image of Muslims? Soldiers also arrested two suspected members of a militia gang terrorizing residents of Katsina-Ala in Benue State two days ago and both of them are Christians.
“If we add the five Christians who killed the Fulani and wounded their cattle to the list of Christian killer militiamen, what we have is a situation where the riddle of killings is being solved little by little. The Fulanis have been complaining for a long time that they were being attacked. Whole Fulani families and communities were being wiped out. Their cattle were being rustled. Nobody listened to them because the perpetrators have been well trained, extra-careful, clever, methodical but merciless and deadly. We should not treat this case with kid’s glove now that some people have been caught.
The plot to incriminate Muslims or hang crimes on innocent Muslims in order to smear the good name of Islam is gradually unfolding. We will not stand akimbo while the real dramatis personae in this game use blackmail and intimidation to cover their tracts.
“Christian leaders should stop interfering with the course of justice. It is unethical to ask the president to intervene in a criminal case. Summon your legal team. Head for the appeal court. Afterall the convicts were tried by a court of competent jurisdiction. It was not a Shariah court.”
Concluding, MURIC said, “In our closing remarks, we urge President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore CAN’s request for freedom for killers. We commend the gallant soldiers, policemen and DSS who are working day and night in Benue, Taraba, Plateau and other places to ensure that killings stop and that killers are brought to book. Instead of conducting clandestine manouvres, we urge the leaders of CAN to join hands with Muslim leaders in an effort to enforce law and order in Nigeria.” http://dailypost.ng/2018/06/22/christian-youths-death-row-must-die-muric-replies-can/

Politics › House Of Reps Justifies N578billion Hike In 2018 Budget. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:57am On Jun 21, 2018 |
....Blames executive for late passage of budgetThe House of Representatives yesterday justified its decision to raise the budget estimates by N578 billion.
It also reiterated its stance not be subservient to the Executive on national budget preparation and approvals.
The House absolved itself of blame in the late passage of the budget. It blamed it all on the Executive.
In its reaction to President Muhammadu Buhari’s complaints while signing the 2018 Appropriation Act, the House said it is within its constitutional powers to alter the document.
The statement yesterday by its spokesman Abdulrazak Namdas, said it jacked up the 2018 budget because some of the projects designed by the executive did not meet the needs of the common man.
The lawmakers said the additional costs and projects to the budget were done in good faith for the sole purpose of improving the lives of Nigerians.
The statement reads: “The House of Representatives is appreciative of President Muhammadu Buhari in signing the 2018 Appropriation Bill into law and wish to make the following observations:
”That the budget is usually a proposal by the Executive to the National Assembly, which the latter is given the constitutional power of appropriation to alter, make additions, costs or reduce as it may deem necessary. The Legislature is not expected to be a rubber-stamp by simply approving the Executive proposals and returning the budget to Mr. President. Therefore, the additions Mr. President complained of in his speech are justifiable.
”We are on the same page with Mr. President in his desire to return our budget cycle to January-December. By the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2007, the budget estimates should be with the National Assembly around September of the year. In the case of the 2018 budget, the estimates came behind schedule in November 2017, even though this attempt was seen as one of the earliest in recent years. Going forward, we urge the Executive to speed up the reporting time to the National Assembly by complying fully with the FRA.
”Besides, there were delays that should be blamed on the heads of MDAs. Mr. President will recall that he had to direct ministers and heads of agencies to go to the National Assembly to defend their proposals. This came after the National Assembly had persistently raised the alarm over the non-cooperative attitudes of these government officials. On this grounds, the delay in passing the budget cannot be blamed on the legislature.
”New projects in budget. On this aspect, we have to remind Mr. President that we are representatives of our people and wish to state that even the common man deserves a mention in the budget by including projects that will directly affect his life positively. Some of the projects designed by the executive, as high-sounding as their names suggest, do not meet the needs of the common man.
“National Assembly budget. Before 2015, the budget of the National Assembly was N150billion for several years. It was cut down to N120bn in 2015 and further down to N115bn in 2016. In 2017, the budget was N125bn and N139.5bn in 2018. This means that the budget of the National Assembly is still far below the N150bn in the years before 2015.” http://thenationonlineng.net/house-of-reps-justifies-n578billion-hike-in-budget-2018/

Politics › Femi Adesina Accuses Opposition Of Widespread Killings In Nigeria by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:22am On Jun 21, 2018 |
The presidency Wednesday attributed the widespread killings in the country to the political enemies of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying they were the sponsors of the killing machines that have sent many Nigerians to their untimely graves.
According to the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, who spoke on Arise TV, a THISDAY sister broadcast network, the president’s enemies resorted to the bestial act to discredit his scorecard on security, which he said was one of the three-prong plank Buhari ascended the presidency.
He stressed that the killings across the country were being instigated and sponsored by the opposition to weaken the incumbent government as much as possible.
The presidential spokesman said security agencies were investigating those behind the killings in the country, warning that once they were identified, they would be dealt with.
He also stated that the protests around the country over the killings were driven by political motives.
According to him, “You have the true herders and farmers who are clashing and you have hidden hostile hands who have crept in under that umbrella to play what the president has described as irresponsible politics.
“This farmers – herders’ clash has been going on for a long time. When I say long time, I mean far long before this administration. Like the president said, the issue is even older than anybody living today. What you have today are being sponsored because they know security is one of the strongest points of the administration.”
Adesina added: “The president said so in a national broadcast. He also said the security agencies are investigating and has warned that once they are identified, they will be dealt with. The intension of the opposition in any democracy is to weaken the incumbent as much as possible and the opposition in Nigeria has identified security as one of the strong points of the Buhari administration. So they decided to go to that area finding the soft under belly and stick a knife into it.”
He regretted that though people were being killed, adding that security should be the concern of everyone.
“When our president met United States President, Donald Trump, recently, even Trump said security is a collective thing,” he said, adding: “What we see in Nigeria is that people expect security to come from the top, rather it should be bottom up.”
On the need to allow for state police to address the security situation in the country, he said the president could not do it alone because it was a party matter.
He said the Buhari administration had improved the Nigerian economy, adding that the kind of change that Nigerians envisaged in certain areas would not come in the short term.
The presidential spokesman said government’s spending had created jobs and denied that more Nigerians had lost jobs as a result of Buhari’s policies.
He said: “Those statistics you have of unemployment are from white collar jobs that is not all that make an economy. We have a record of blue collar jobs. For example, rice farmers, when this administration came were only five million. As at today, they are over 12 million, that is seven million additional rice farmers. When you heard that Nigeria cut rice importation by 90 per cent, it was not just from the blues.”
Speaking about the economic growth of over six per cent that the country recorded before the administration of Buhari as against the 0.8 per cent today, he said Nigeria was running a bubble economy that was unsustainable.
“Now the foundation of the economy is being changed,” he said, adding: “If you look at the figures you will see what manufacturing has contributed, what agriculture is being contributed and what the solid minerals sector has contributed.”
He also denied that the electricity situation in the country was getting worse, saying: “Comparatively, it is not getting worse. If you had less than 3,000MW of electricity in 2015 and now you have over 7,000MW that is an improvement. When people say the power outages have been on for a long time, they mean far long before this administration.”
On the doubts over the Buhari’s health, Adesina contended that it is human nature to have doubts, adding that it was also human nature to express belief and faith.
In a related development, President Buhari Wednesday in Abuja said his administration’s commitment to rapid development of Nigeria goes beyond ethnicity, religion and geographical space.
The president, according to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, made this remark while receiving Sheikh Ahmed Tijjani Ibrahim Inyass, the Grand Khalifa of Tijjaniya, from Senegal at the Presidential Villa.
The statement said the president expressed the overwhelming support of Nigerians and their confidence in his administration and told the Sheikh that he was “very pleased with the prayers and support of the Tijjaniya for this administration”.
It quoted the president as saying: ‘‘I know you are praying for the stability and prosperity of this country,’’ adding that the president thanked the religious leader for the visit, saying it “underscored the importance of the religious group in promoting good governance in the country”.
The statement added that the Sheikh commended the president for what he described as the good job he’s doing in Nigeria, adding: ‘More than 40 million Tijjanyia’s are praying for your success because we believe the Almighty Allah has chosen you to lead Nigeria at this time and to actualise the dream of a great country.”
It also disclosed that the Grand Khalifa, who was in Nigeria to commiserate with the late Isyaku Rabiu family in Kano, paid tribute to the memory of Rabiu, describing him as a great man and nationalist who was dedicated to knowledge, Islam and prosperity of Nigeria.
It also said the Sheikh offered prayers for the progress and prosperity of the nation as well as the good health, wisdom, strength and success of the president. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2018/06/21/presidency-accuses-opposition-of-sponsoring-widespread-killings/amp/

Politics › PDP Will Return To Power In 2019 - Jonathan, Atiku Says by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:15pm On Jun 20, 2018 |
Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday expressed optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would return to power in 2019.
They said the party is getting stronger.
They spoke with journalists when the ex-President hosted Atiku at his home in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
On PDP chances in 2019, Jonathan said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Ilechukwu Eze, that the party is better poised to win next year’s presidential election.
He said: “Yes, we had some issues in 2015. But as you know politics is a very dynamic business. I believe PDP is coming back and getting stronger.
“Even though we are in the opposition with fewer governors, PDP is still the strongest and largest party in the country.”
Jonathan said he was pleased that the former Vice President who came to Bayelsa to commission State Government projects paid him a visit.
The ex-President said he had enjoyed a long relationship with Atiku, beginning from his time as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.
Atiku insisted that only the PDP has the strength and structure to win the presidential election in 2019.
He said: “It is actually the PDP that has the strength and structure to get back to Aso Rock. There is no other party that has the structure and strength like the PDP. Without PDP, APC should not have been in Aso Rock.” http://thenationonlineng.net/pdp-will-return-to-power-in-2019-by-jonathan-atiku/

Politics › Anti-grazing Law: Defense Minister's Opinion Personal, Not FG's - Audu Ogbeh by BeeBeeOoh(op): 10:13am On Jun 20, 2018*. Modified: 2:35pm On Jun 20, 2018 |
The comment by the defence minister, Mansur Dan-Ali, that anti-grazing laws by some state governments are responsible for the farmers/herders clashes, has been described as his personal view by Audu Ogbeh, minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Mr. Dan-Ali, in January, while briefing state house correspondents at the end of a meeting of security chiefs with President Muhammadu Buhari, said the decision of some states to enact laws to stop open grazing triggered the violence.
He said, “Whatever crisis that happened at any time, there has to be remote and immediate causes. What are the remote causes of this farmers/herders crisis? Since Independence, we know there used to be a route whereby these cattle rearers use.
“Cattle rearers are all over the nation, you go to Bayelsa, you see them, you go to Ogun, you see them. If those routes are blocked, what happens? These people are Nigerians, it’s just like you going to block river or shoreline, does that make sense to you?
“These are the remote causes. But what are the immediate causes? It is the grazing law. These people are Nigerians, we must learn to live together with each other, that is basic. Communities and other people must learn how to accept foreigners within their enclave, finish!”
The minister expressed a similar stance in June, calling on affected states to suspend the implementation of the laws. His comment has since been condemned by many Nigerians\ including the Senate and the House of Representatives.
A fellow minister, on Tuesday, however, asked Nigerians not to consider Mr Dan-Ali’s views as that of the federal government.
The minister of agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, spoke on Tuesday at the presentation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan; a plan put in place by the federal government to permanently resolve the herders-farmers crises and improve meat and milk production.
PREMIUM TIMES published details of the plan, put in place by the National Economic Council.
At the event, Mr Ogbeh said the defense ministers’ statement was his personal view.
“As for the minister’s opinion, it is his view,” the agriculture minister said of Mr Dan-Ali’s comment.
Mr Ogbeh was responding to a journalist’s question on whether the livestock plan, focused on transforming cattle rearing from being nomadic to ranching, was implementable considering Mr Dan-Ali’s expressed views.
The agriculture minister said government was determined to implement the new plan.
“Cows cannot continue to roam the way they did in the past,” he said, promising to engage Mr Dan-Ali not to express such views in future.
He said the plan is evidence-based and NEC which adopted it is headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
“NEC is chaired by the vice president. The vice president is more powerful than any minister,” he said. Benue, Taraba and Ekiti are some of the states where the anti-open grazing law has taken effect.
Mr Ogbeh described the laws as “desperate attempts” to resolve the incessant violence; and not causes of the violence.
The laws were enacted after several states suffered deadly violence often blamed on herdsmen.
Hundreds of Nigerians were killed early January in some of these clashes in Benue and Taraba states.
Also at the presentation of the government plan in Abuja, the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, described the defence minister’s comments as “casting the government in bad light.”
“He needs to apologise to Nigerians,” Mr Ortom said while defending his state’s anti-open grazing law.
“We have challenged anyone with a better option to put it on the table,” he said of the state law.
The governor, however, said like any other law, it was still possible to amend controversial parts of the Benue law. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/273043-anti-grazing-law-defence-ministers-comments-personal-opinion-not-federal-govts-audu-ogbeh.htmlLalasticlala, Mynd44

Politics › FG To Disburse $322m Abacha Loot To Nigerians - Daily Trust by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:58am On Jun 20, 2018 |
The Federal Government is making final preparation to disburse $322 million fund repatriated from the accounts of former Head of State, late General Sani Abacha in Switzerland to Nigerians.
The National Coordinator of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), Nigeria and Special Assistant to the President on Justice Reforms, Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu disclosed this recently in an interactive session with newsmen.
Ibekeaku-Nwagwu said under MoU with Switzerland the funds would be paid directly into the accounts of the poorest Nigerians through their various accounts for two years and identification numbers to be made available on the website being developed by the National Social Investment office and the World Bank.
She solicited the patience of Nigerians, explaining that the agencies working on the modalities would brief the public on June 28, adding that the process for the payment will be transparent for civil society and the media to monitor.
She said despite oppositions against the MoU from within and outside government, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN) and his team have pursued President Muhammadu Buhari’s agenda of ensuring that the $322m was returned for deployment in the social safety nets project, which would make targeted transfers to the poor and vulnerable households.
“The poorest members of the community will be registered online, and before you make any payment, they must have an ID number so that every payment would be tracked. No amount will be paid out without a joint signature between Nigeria and the World Bank and without identification of individuals,” she said.
Ibekeaku-Nwagwu said President Buhari’s commitment to the Open Government Partnership during the London Summit in 2016 has enhanced transparency and accountability in government budgeting and contracting, adding that “If there is anything we have achieved its about getting Nigerian citizens to become conscious about what is happening with their money.” https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/fg-to-disburse-322m-abacha-loot-to-nigerians-257150.html

Politics › Why Should I Love Shittu, He's Not A Woman - Ajimobi Mocks Buhari's Minister by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:48pm On Jun 19, 2018*. Modified: 9:45am On Jun 20, 2018 |
Governor of Oyo, Abiola Ajimobi, has declared that he does not love the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, because “he is not a woman”.
Ajimobi, who stated he won’t support the Minister’s governorship ambition, said Shittu and his “disunity forum” were engaging in lawlessness in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a chat with Channels TV, the governor also reacted to how Shittu and his supporters were not allowed to enter venue of inauguration of APC state chairmen a fortnight ago.
He stated that the event which took place at the APC headquarters in Abuja was a restricted gathering because not everyone was invited.
“Were they invited? Only elected chairmen were invited. Governors, Ministers, Senators were not asked to be present. So why did they go there? It’s part of the lawlessness ”, he said.
The interviewer then asked: “It would appear there’s no love lost between you and your minister?”
Ajimobi replied: “I don’t love him, he doesn’t love me. He’s not a woman that I woud love. So, what is the love there? http://dailypost.ng/2018/06/19/love-shittu-hes-not-woman-ajimobi-mocks-buharis-minister-video/Lalasticlala, Mynd44
