Business › CBN Policy Meeting "Strengthens" Naira Against Dollar- The Cable by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:19pm On Sep 19, 2016
The naira on Monday appreciated against the dollar at the interbank market, owing to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) policy meeting and its expectations.

According to NAN, the local currency gained 1.4 points to exchange at N307.25 to the dollar, from N308.69 it exchanged on Friday, representing an appreciation of 0.5 per cent.

It, however, stabilised at the parallel market, exchanging at N425 to the dollar, a figure it had maintained for three days, while it traded against the pound sterling and euro at N550 and N470, respectively.

Trading at the bureau de change (BDC) segment of the market also showed the naira stabilising against the dollar, closing at N422 while it settled at N549 and N470 against pound sterling and euro, respectively.

Currency traders attributed the relative stability of the naira to the anticipation of a likely policy change by the MPC meeting that is underway at the CBN.

They expressed the hope that the apex bank would reconsider its foreign exchange policy with a view to coming up with the best option that would rescue the nation’s currency.

Politics › Group Accuses Gov. Dickson Of Attempted Bribery Of Appeal Court Judges- SR by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:46pm On Sep 19, 2016
“As the people of Bayelsa State await the verdict of the Appeal Court in the governorship tussle between the APC candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva, and PDP's Governor Seriake Dickson, we have found it pertinent to alert the nation that‎ a bribery ring is making frantic efforts to infiltrate the appeal panel."

The Bayelsa Professional Youths Forum raised alarm on Monday over the alleged attempts by Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson to use a retired Supreme Court judge to influence the outcome of the appeal filed by All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Timipre Sylva against the judgment of the Election Petition Tribunal.

Group coordinator Edison Bibiaredei stated that though the State is expectant about the outcome of the appeal, the alleged attempts by the Bayelsa State governor to hire a retired Supreme Court judge to bribe and subvert justice is criminal and should be rejected.

“As the people of Bayelsa State await the verdict of the Appeal Court in the governorship tussle between the APC candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva, and PDP's Governor Seriake Dickson, we have found it pertinent to alert the nation that‎ a bribery ring is making frantic efforts to infiltrate the appeal panel,” the group announced.

"The bribery ring, ostensibly working for Governor Dickson, is being spearheaded by a Delta-born Bayelsan, a retired justice of the Supreme Court, who has made attempts to 'reach concerned judges' in respect of the pending case at the Appeal Court.

"This has become very imperative in view of several unguarded utterances made by Governor Dickson that he has already perfected plans to procure a favorable verdict as far as the appeal instituted by Sylva is concerned.

"We have it on good authority that the said judge has a budget of N5 billion for this unwholesome act. In the first instance, he had made an attempt to deliver the sum of N3 billion to an agent of the panel for onward transmission to targeted points in order to influence the outcome of the verdict. The balance of N2 billion is to be put on hold until the delivery of a verdict in favor Governor Dickson.

"This is ridiculous and very mindlessly conceived when juxtaposed with the suffering of Bayelsa workers as a result of months of unpaid salaries.

“To underscore the seriousness of the matter, we have a few hours ago, forwarded an evidence-backed petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the anti-graft agency to commence an investigation to unravel the finances of the said retired Supreme Court judge.

"We call on Nigerians to ignore Governor Dickson’s false alarm as regards the closeness of a certain judge on the appeal panel to Sylva. To say the least, this is the governor’s usual style ‎whenever he has perfected acts as in the case under scrutiny. The alarm is a pre-emptive act meant to deter and possibly suppress our curiosity over the movement of huge cash bags out of the Bayelsa Government House to Abuja.

"For the records, there are several blackmail outlets already being bankrolled by Governor Dickson both in the conventional media and online platforms with similar conclusions aimed at blackmailing the same Nigerian judiciary to do his bidding," the group’s statement read.

‎Contacted on the development, an aide working for the State government, who pleaded anonymity, dismissed the claim by the group as a lie and a deliberate attempt to arm-twist the judiciary.

Politics › Anti-graft War: Stop Celebrating Criminals, Ribadu Advises Nigerians- SR by BeeBeeOoh(op):
A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has said that for the war against corruption to succeed, Nigerians must stop celebrating criminals.

Ribadu, who gave the advice at the 2016 conference of the Nigerian Institute of Management in Abuja on Monday, also said that security votes should be abolished.

According to him, leadership is essential for the anti-graft war to succeed. He said that leadership at all levels should provide the needed example.

He stated, “There should also be the will to apply the sanctions. As I have pointed out several times, lack of will by the political leadership to prosecute the war against corruption takes us to nowhere. The political leadership should be determined and it should be seen to be serious about it.”

He also said that all government expenditures should be budgeted, adding that extra-budgetary spending should be criminalised and “security votes should be completely phased out.”

He stated, “Honesty has to be lifted to the position of a prized and rewarding national value. Criminals should not be celebrated as heroes on account of their wealth.”

Politics › Again, Militants Blow Up NPDC/Shoreline Pipeline In Delta by BeeBeeOoh(op):
*Renews warning to First Hydrocarbon, Seplat, Total E&P, Shell, Agip, Saipem, Mobil

WARRI- THE Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, NDGJM, a militant group in Delta State, yesterday, claimed that its strike force blew up the Afiesere-Ekiugbo delivery line, operated by the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company, NPDC/Shoreline Petroleum at Ughelli, Delta state, on Sunday.

In a statement by self-styled Gen Aldo Agbalaja, the group said: “The Opudo strike force, at about 11:30 pm on Sunday, September 18, 2016, struck the Afiesere – Ekiugbo delivery line in Ughelli, operated by NPDC/Shoreline.”

“The Operation Crocodile Tears is not slowing down, but determined to achieve target. Until the federal government takes the proper steps, this song will continue to play,” it added.

The group asserted: “This is to once again emphasize our earlier revelation that the so-called Operation Crocodile Smile is nothing but a scam: some jumbled job, sewn together to retire some recently embezzled military budget.”

“Were it a serious endeavor, as the entire military system has sought to bamboozle Nigerians and the entire world to believe, the half-baked operation would have at least been reaping marginal results, besides those wrong arrests, lacking in intelligence that it had realized,”
it added.

Day of reckoning close for Burutai

On protection of oil pipelines by the military, it said: “This is to you, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, let you crocodile continue to smile, your time of reckoning is at hand, probably by the time the smiling crocodile finally sinks, you will see its tears and blood.”

“Under your nose, the very task of guarding oil assets (which we consider a waste of time, resources and a failure of priorities) will fail because you are both insincere and incompetent.

We‘re just starting

“The Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate is just starting, you are yet to see what we are about, by the time the alpha operations are initiated, you will need more than these fighter jets to keep your troops safe in any part of the Niger Delta,” NDGJM asserted.

The group warned the oil and gas companies, who have put their trust in the guns and fighter jets of the Nigerian armed forces to wait for their rewards.

Its words: “We have observed that you have placed your trust in the guns and fighter jets of the Nigerian armed forces, our words for you are few: keep at it and wait for your rewards, which have almost come upon you. It is a reflection of your minds towards our people; you obviously do not believe that the people of this part are deserving of good lives. You hide behind the guns of the oppressors to pillage our lands and our people, leaving us despoiled and our lands raped. You do all manners of things you will dare not imagine in other parts of the world where you operate.”

“Here, you have failed all basic corporate social responsibilities, leaving the people to languish in lack and ruin. Continue with your insolence against our people, but we will vow to you today that we shall uproot every asset and facility you think you have secured with soldiers and their guns.

“Shorelines, First Hydrocarbon, NPDC, Seplat, Total E&P, Shell, Agip, Saipem, Mobil and co wait for us, we are just coming out for you,” it added.

Business › Dangote To FG: Sell NLNG, Beef Up Reserves, And Recession Will Go By December.. by BeeBeeOoh(op):
Aliko Dangote has prescribed ways through which Nigeria can get out of recession before the end of 2016.

In an interview with CNBC Africa, the billionaire said: “The only way for us to get out of this recession is to make sure we move into action quickly; action by diversifying the economy quickly.

Here are the details of Dangote’s prescription:

SELL STAKE IN NLNG AND AFRICAN FINANCE COOPERATION

“If I had challenges in my company, I would not hesitate to sell assets, to remain afloat, to get to the better times, because it doesn’t make any sense for me to keep any assets and then suffocate the whole organisation.

“What we need to do now in my own thinking… we have a lot of assets to sell. We can sell part of the joint venture; part of the shares. You know government normally owns 60 percent.

“We can sell in an open tender be it Chinese. We can change the term and make it an operating one, just like what we have in NLNG. We also have another asset I think we don’t really need.

“The African finance corporation; it can fetch them $800million easily. My own suggestion before was that they should even sell 100 percent of NLNG. I don’t think government should be in any business of investing in sectors of LNG.

“A company like that, with earnings of $1.5 billion on the average, they should get anywhere between $12 billion and $15 billion.”

SHORE UP RESERVES WITH NLNG SALE PROCEEDS

“You will not believe that the crisis that we have today, if we have $15 billion, adding it to our $25 billion, that is $40 billion reserves. That will give confidence, confidence will come back, then government will back it up with proper economic policy, where people can see the roadmap.

“Latest by fourth quarter we will be out of recession. It should be a partnership between government and private sector. We have all the answers, Nigeria falling into recession does not really scare me, if we take action.”

NAIRA AT 250 TO THE DOLLAR

The businessman said if the government boosts reserves as suggested, the naira may fall to 250 to the dollar and help the economy.

“Once we can sell assets, and put $15 billion together, you’d be very shocked at how much the dollar will actually drop, you can easily see 250. What is happening today is mere speculation.

“To currency, everybody will speculate, banks will speculate, companies will speculate, individuals will speculate, because if you have money you want to send in from abroad you will keep sending in trickles.

“If you know that CBN has $40 billion in reserves today, if you have $100,000, you might even sell it forward because you know that this rate is going to crash and you must quickly sell it.”

OTHER THINGS WE LEARNT FROM DANGOTE’S INTERVIEW

•India has no oil, yet has over 2 billion tonnes in refining capacity

•Nigeria imports poverty and export jobs

•We do not produce up to five percent of the clothes we wear

•Government should not be in the business of building factories, but just collecting taxes

•China has more than 500 billionaires on the Forbes list and over three million millionaires

•If I have to build a road of 1,000 kilometres in Nigeria, I don’t have to waste years talking about it. I raise money and build it, and hand over to government after 20 to 25 years.

•If not for Dangote Cement, government will have to put down $2.5 billion dollars in 2016 to import cement.

•We need 65 million cubic metres of sand for Dangote refinery.

•Dangote Refinery mechanical completion will finish by 2018, but oil will flow into the refinery by first quarter of 2019.
