Crime › Why I Dumped My One-Day-Old Baby - Mother (pictured) by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:26am On Sep 16, 2016
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Ifunanya Eme for allegedly dumping her one- day- old baby girl in the bush.

Ifunanya, aged 31, and a single mother, claimed she dropped the baby to die in the bush as she had no means of feeding her.

“The man responsible for the pregnancy denied me. I was staying in Ajah, a Lagos suburb, but relocated to Ajamgbadi where I was offered a job in a factory. When I thought about losing the job, I made up my mind to dump the baby that has already put me in problem.

“The baby is a child of destiny because, I did not go for ante-natal throughout the pregnancy. The day I was in labour, I did not seek assistance from anybody. I went to the bush with a knife. I delivered myself of the baby and I used it to cut the placenta. In fact, I made up my mind that I must do away with the baby. I don’t want to be embarrassed in future by the baby who would ask of her father.

“The only thing I know is that the man who is responsible for the pregnancy told me he was traveling. Since that day till now, the phone number he gave me can’t be reached, she said.

A police officer who doesn’t want to be named said the baby was discovered by a passer-by who heard her crying and reported to the police.

He said the trace of blood was trailed to the a house, where the woman was found.

Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the command has taken custody of the baby.

He said, “the baby was seen by the eagle eye the patrol team from Ajamgbadi Division. They picked up the baby during investigation, they were able to trace the mother. “The baby was taken to the hospital for examination and we will do the needful by sending her to the appropriate government agency for rehabilitation.”

Business › Oil Price Rise To $46 Per Barrel- PunchNg by BeeBeeOoh(op): 12:46pm On Sep 15, 2016
Oil prices rebounded slightly Thursday after tanking the previous day, but gains were capped by US stockpiles data and the prospect of rising output in Libya and Nigeria, dealers said.

At about 1015 GMT, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in October was up 20 cents at $43.78 a barrel.

Brent North Sea crude for November delivery won 32 cents to $46.17 compared with the close on Wednesday.

The market had tumbled Wednesday after the US Energy Information Administration said gasoline and distilled products inventories rose last week, overshadowing news of a surprise fall in crude supplies.

Later Wednesday, Libya’s National Oil Corporation said it would double production within four weeks after it was handed control of crucial ports that had been seized by forces loyal to the country’s rival administration.

The news from Libya — which has Africa’s largest oil reserves — fanned long-standing worries about a global supply glut and overproduction that have hammered prices for more than two years.

At the same time, Nigeria — which is the African continent’s biggest crude producer — appears set to also increase its oil exports, traders said.

Politics › Lai Mohammed To PDP: Bury Your Head In Shame As Buhari " Packs Your Mess".. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 12:31pm On Sep 15, 2016
Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, has asked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to “hide its head in shame”, saying the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to “pack the mess” it inherited from successive PDP administrations.

Reacting to PDP’s call on Buhari to resign, the minister said instead of showing remorse and rebuilding itself into a strong opposition party, the party had continued to blame the Buhari administration for past failures.

”We are on a rescue mission to resuscitate Nigeria after the PDP left it in a coma, and the noise from the same PDP seems designed to sabotage the rescue efforts. But we are not deterred,” Mohammed said in a statement

”While the PDP was emasculating Nigeria on all fronts, including social, economic and political, the rapacious party was deceiving Nigerians by giving them the illusion of growth and prosperity.

“Instead of showing remorse and rebuilding itself to a strong opposition party, the PDP has continued to blame the Buhari administration, which is left to pack their mess.

“PDP undertakers have continued to engage in a blame game, when they should be hiding from the shame they brought upon themselves and the nation.

”They keep saying we should stop talking of the past, yet the past will not stop rearing its head. They keep saying we should no longer refer to the past, but how can we forget so soon that our foreign exchange reserves plummeted from $62bn in 2008 to $30bn by 2015, at a time when oil prices were at a historic high, reaching a level of $114 per barrel in 2014.

“By comparison, Indonesia, another oil producing economy with a high population, increased its reserves from $60 billion in 2008 to $120 billion in 2015.

”The candid truth is that we failed under the successive PDP administrations to save for the rainy day, and we need to constantly remind ourselves of that so that we won’t repeat the mistake. Take the excess crude account which fell from about $9bn in 2007 to about $2bn in 2015.

“The argument that it was the state governors that depleted the account does not hold water since there were governors in place when the account was being built up.

”Worse still is the fact that up to $14bn in revenues from Nigerian LNG remains unaccounted for and indeed until the Buhari administration came to office, state governments never got any allocations from this source of funds which properly belongs to the federation account.

“The naked fact on the revenue front is that there was just a failure of leadership. This was compounded by the non-transparent uses of funds. We are all witnesses to the sacking of a Central Bank Governor because he raised an alarm about $20 billion that had gone missing.

”We are indeed still trying to recover huge sums looted from the national treasury under the PDP’s watch, with $15 billion stolen from the defence sector alone. Perhaps most painful is that because of the way funds (about $322m) returned from Switzerland were mishandled, we now have to accept conditionalities before our stolen assets are even returned to us.”

Mohammed added that while the government will continue to welcome constructive criticism, it had nothing to learn from PDP who wasted the country’s wealth in the time of economic boom.

The minister maintained that the economy was in a terrible state when the current administration came on board.

“After earning so much resources and increasing the total debt stock, our governments were not able to meet salary obligations, sometimes for up to seven months, then something was definitely wrong somewhere and if this is not evidence of a collapsing economy, one wonders what it is,” he said.

”Indeed, it was not so long ago that the fuel subsidy regime almost bankrupted the country. Through credibility and commitment to good governance, the current administration has managed to save up to N1.4 trillion that would have been spent on subsidies for PMS.

“Moreover, the daily demand for PMS hashas halved from 1600 trucks a day to 850 trucks a day. If we could achieve such savings, then clearly the petrol sector which was and remains a huge source of foreign exchange demand was not being well managed.

”It is also important to point out that the poor security situation in the north-east has had ripple effects on the economy. Apart from the dislocation of daily lives, there was extensive loss of agricultural production arising from the fact that our citizens in that zone could not go to their farms not to talk of planting and harvesting produce.

“Yet, in just a space of about 15 months, the Buhari administration has liberated this region from the clutches of Boko Haram, which is now left to release meaningless videos when it could no longer carry out spectacular attacks.”

Travel › Passengers Stranded As Arik Suspends Operations- Daily Trust by BeeBeeOoh(op): 4:49am On Sep 14, 2016
Hundreds of domestic and international passengers were stranded as Arik Air suspended operations at short notice yesterday.
The suspension of operations is attributed to the airline’s inability to renew insurance cover as well as its failure to pay backlogs of fuel debt running into billions of naira.

Arik, which is the largest West Africa airline operator, accounts for 60 percent of domestic operations in Nigeria.

The suspension left about 1, 500 passengers stranded at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja alone, a source said.

The source added that over 2,000 passengers were equally stranded in Lagos and five other destinations in Nigeria.

Frustrated passengers complained bitterly that the cancellations had cost them their businesses and other engagements in London, Ghana among other destinations.
There were angry scenes at Arik booking offices, especially in Abuja and Lagos where passengers hurled harsh words at ticketing and security staff.

For several hours, many of the passengers both at the international and local wings of Murtala ‎Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, were confused even as they expressed their frustrations with management of Arik Air whom they accused of keeping them in the dark.

“Why will they keep us in the dark? Where do I go from here? All my plans to arrive in London tomorrow have been shattered. Repaying my flight fare is not just what I want but even if they do that, will that fix all my business appointments they have shattered?” Biola Adebanjo, who later identified himself as a 35-year-old fashionista said.

“These people are quite heartless and wicked. I booked my return ticket to London last week and while doing that, the portal was still functioning and it did not reject my booking. I’m surprised that I can now come here and be told that all flights have been cancelled because of it is unable to renew its aircraft insurance,” another passenger said.

“Since they knew about the impending problem, why did they keep accepting bookings? Why did they bring us to see this state where there is no previous information or alert? Why? Why?” Joke Rochas, a
mother of two who said she had a flight booking to London said.

The airline said that it was “working around the clock to resolve the necessary documentation, which has been a challenge due to the long weekend holidays due to Eid al Adha,” a part of the statement read.

“At the present time, all flights of the airline have been cancelled for Tuesday, 13 September 2016,” a statement by the airline said.

This situation is likely to continue for the next few days until such time that NAICOM (National Insurance Commission) approves a waiver on a priority basis for the new insurance company to renew the policy, it added.

“All customers are kindly advised to contact Arik Air’s Call Centre (01-2799999), Airport or City ticket offices or visit the airline’s Website (www.arikair.com) for further updates. Passengers are also advised to check with the airline regarding the status of their flights before proceeding to the airport.”

The statement also conveyed the airline’s Arik Group CEO, Dr. Michael Arumemi-Ikhide’s wishes, advice and assurances to passengers and members of the public. ‎

‎ Arik Air is the third airline operator in less than three weeks to have suspended operations in recent times. Nigeria second biggest carrier, Aero Contractor was the first to grind its operation followed by First Nation airline which allegedly claimed to be undergoing maintenance of its A39 fleet.

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja yesterday, a senior staff with the Federal Airports Authority said the airline processed about 20 to 23 flights in and around Abuja daily.

One of Arik Air’s staff who spoke under condition of anonymity said the airline processed some 1,500 passengers daily out of Abuja alone. That suggests some 1,500 passengers were affected by the flights cancellation in Abuja alone.

Thus at an average ticket cost of N30,000 per seat, the airline may have lost some N45 million in revenue from Abuja outbound passenger yesterday.
An angry passenger, Mrs. Lawal stormed the Arik Air Abuja Station manager’s office in Abuja demanding for explanation.

“I bought a ticket with my daughter to Ghana for 6:30pm today (yesterday) I got to the airport and I’m told the flight has been cancelled till tomorrow evening (today). Is that the way you people operate?” She demanded.

“If you cannot operate normal schedule, shut down like Aero has done and let us know you are not flying. You have my email and my phone number and no one contacted me?” She asked the Arik Air Station manager, Mr. Wamildu Jilantikiri, who apologized and assured her Arik Air will resume normal flight operations Wednesday.

“How am I sure you will fly tomorrow? If the registration closes, what do I do? If only I got a notification, I would have looked for alternative.

When our correspondent contacted the General Manager, Public Affairs, NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye as to whether NCAA will activate punitive measures on Arik over customer rights issues, he said “arising challenges will be sorted out” without specifics on how that would happen.
However, a top management of Arik Air staff who didn’t want his name mentioned said the passengers may be compensated based on Arik Air policy and NCAA Act.
