Politics › Jonathan Is The Reason Why Some States Cannot Pay Salaries- Oshiomhole by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:12am On Jun 02, 2016
By Ameh Comrade Godwin

The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has explained why many states in the country are struggling to pay their civil servants’ salaries.
He attributed the current economic challenge to the misrule of the past administration led by Goodluck Jonathan.

He said even governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, which ruled the country in the last 16 years agreed with their colleagues from other parties that the “challenge today is as a result of abuses of yesterday”.

Oshiomhole spoke with State House correspondents shortly after a meeting he had with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said he and five of his colleagues had earlier met with Buhari on Tuesday to discuss the huge challenges being faced by many of the states.

Part of the problem, he said, was that many workers were not being paid.

According to him, once salaries wee not paid, the situation creates a vicious circle with landlords not getting their rents and market women unable to sell, leading to a depressed economy.

He said, “These issues were discussed yesterday (on Tuesday) and as usual President Buhari has been extremely supportive even though we all agree including PDP governors among us that the crisis that we are being faced was as a result of the misrule of the past.

“The challenge of today is as a result of the abuses of yesterday.

“But inspite of that, President Buhari has been very helpful. But for that, many states would have gone into crisis. I don’t know what you will call a state that is completely insolvent and bankrupt.

“We have to appreciate the President for the leadership he has provided; ‎I mean we all have a greater sense of security today than was the case around this time a year ago.

Had it been Buhari never promised to make someone's government ungovernable, had it been he never promised to soak dogs & baboons in blood, had it been buhari was never a sectional & regional president, had it been Buhari never classified some citizens as 1st class & some as 3rd class citizens, if Buhari can come down from his high horse & eat the humble pie; all these won't be happening.

Politics › Boko Haram Responsible For Scarcity Of Tomato In Nigeria- Lai Mohammed by BeeBeeOoh(op): 3:58pm On Jun 01, 2016
By Seun Opejobi

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed says degraded insurgent group, Boko Haram, are responsible for the ongoing scarcity of tomato in the country.

Speaking on Channels Television, the Minister said farmers have been forced to quit the North East due to the level of insecurity in the region.

According to Mohammed, “People talk about the price of tomato but they forget one thing; they forget that the price of tomato today is a direct result of the fact that we have lost two years harvest to Boko Haram insurgency.

“Most of the people you see riding Okada (motorcycles) in Lagos are people who would have been in the farm to produce consumable items.”

Attributing the scarcity of tomatoes to insurgency, the Minister said, “Do you farm where there is war? We have lost two seasons of harvest in addition we have had very poor rainfall last year and this year. These are the combined responsible for the scarcity of tomato. Go and ask economists and agriculturists, they will tell you.”

Politics › Who Are The Niger Delta Avengers?? by BeeBeeOoh(op): 2:07pm On Jun 01, 2016
Nigeria has been hit by growing unrest in the country’s oil-producing south by a new militant group calling itself the Niger Delta Avengers.

Here is what is known about them:

–What’s the story so far? –

The Avengers describe themselves as young, well-educated “worthy outlaws” and have since early 2016 been attacking Nigeria’s oil and gas infrastructure, helping drag production to 20-year lows. They demand an independent state and want international oil companies out of the region.

– Who are they? –

“Even the Nigerian security services are not 100 percent sure what they are up against,” Dirk Steffen, from the Denmark-based Risk Intelligence firm, told AFP. Still, given their ability to execute attacks on critical oil and gas infrastructure, it’s likely some members were part of former militant organisations, he added. But the group’s level of organisation is under debate. “The Avengers may not be a defined group of people, except for a core of maybe 100-150 people or so,” said Steffen.

– Why now? –

In 2009, Nigeria reached a ceasefire with militant groups which previously disrupted oil production and introduced an amnesty programme. That gave former rebels a monthly stipend and jobs training in the oil industry as welders, divers and technicians. But after the economy took a nosedive following the crash in global oil prices, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has struggled to pay for the amnesty programme. He has even hinted at winding it down, making some 30,000 ex-militants on the payroll angry. He has also ended lucrative security contracts with former militants to protect pipelines.

– What else?

Buhari, from the majority Muslim north, has charged prominent politicians and ex-militants from the oil-rich mostly Christian south with corruption. That’s stoked longstanding animosity between the north and the south — an opposition stronghold — with some criticising his anti-graft fight as a “political witch-hunt”.

– What makes them different? –

Like previous militant groups, the Avengers want a greater share of oil revenue, amnesty payments, and clean-up and compensation for spills. But they also have a series of political demands that culminate in the creation of an independent Niger Delta state. They demand the release of pro-Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu, who has been imprisoned on charges of “treasonable felony”, and say members of Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) should face corruption trials like the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

– Who supports them? –

“The Avengers and other groups that have popped up in recent months are likely getting some support from former and current PDP members,” Philippe de Pontet, Sub-Saharan Africa analyst at risk consultancy firm Eurasia Group, said in a recent report. “It was always expected that there would be backlash to the Buhari administration in the region. If anything, the surprise is that the first 10 months of Buhari’s term were as quiet as they were.”

– What have they attacked? –

The Avengers’ attack on Shell’s Forcados underwater flow line in February used divers, showing they have the skills and knowledge of oil infrastructure to target areas that will significantly halt production. Other attacks include the sabotage of Chevron’s offshore Okan gas valve platform, and bombings of Eni’s infrastructure and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipelines, which provide gas to Lagos for power generation.

– Why does it matter? –

Nigeria has budgeted for production of 2.2 million barrels per day this year but the attacks have cut output to 1.4 million bpd, according to the country’s junior oil minister Emmanuel Kachikwu. The sabotage couldn’t have come at a worse time, with Nigeria, which normally depends on oil export sales for 70 percent of government revenue, on the brink of a recession.

Internationally, Nigeria’s oil disruption — along with unrest in Libya and wildfires in Canada — has pushed up the price of the commodity around the world.

– What’s the government response?

Buhari said last weekend he is going to “re-engineer” the amnesty programme, which could be an olive branch to the militants. At the same time, however, he is sending more troops to the creeks and swamps of the Niger delta region. There are fears a heavy-handed response will breed more discontent and attract more people to join the avengers.

Business › Decline In Economic Activities Persisted In May- CBN by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:14pm On Jun 01, 2016
By Babajide Komolafe

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Wednesday said that the decline in economic activities in the first quarter of the month persisted in May.

The CBN disclosed this in its Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) report for May.

The report revealed that, “Out of 16 sub-sectors in the manufacturing sector, eleven sub-sectors recorded decline in the review month while five sectors recorded expansion. Out of eighteen non-manufacturing sub-sectors, fourteen sub-sectors recorded decline, while four subsectors recorded expansion.”

In the manufacturing sector, “Production level, new orders, employment level and raw material inventories declined at a slower rate; supplier delivery time however improved at a slower rate.”

In the non-manufacturing sector, “Business activity and employment level declined at slower rate; while new orders and raw materials inventories declining at faster rate”.

The Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) CBN’s Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMII) are based on survey of manufacturing and non-manufacturing executives, who indicate change or no change in the level of business activities in the current month compared with the previous month.

The CBN stated that, “The Manufacturing PMI rose to 45.8 index points in May 2016, compared to 43.7 in the preceding month. This implies that the manufacturing sector declined at a slower rate during the review period.

“Of the sixteen manufacturing sub-sectors, eleven recorded decline in the review month in the following order: primary metal; paper products; petroleum & coal products; furniture & related products; fabricated metal products; printing & related support activities; non-metallic mineral products; electrical equipment; textile, apparel, leather & footwear; food, beverage & tobacco products and chemical & pharmaceutical products.

“The remaining five sub-sectors however recorded expansion in the following order: computer & electronic products; appliances and components; cement; plastics & rubber products and transportation equipment.

“The composite PMI for the non-manufacturing sector recorded decline for the fifth consecutive month. The index remained at the 44.3 index points registered in the preceding month. Of the eighteen non-manufacturing sub-sectors, fourteen recorded decline in May 2016 in the following order: professional, scientific, & technical services; public administration; management of companies; construction; real estate, rental & leasing; information & communication; utilities; finance & insurance; agriculture; wholesale trade; accommodation & food services; health care & social assistance; repair, maintenance/washing of motor vehicles and electricity, gas, steam & air conditioning supply.

“The water supply, sewage & waste management and transportation & warehousing sub-sectors remained unchanged, while the remaining two subsectors recorded growth in the order: arts, entertainment & recreation and educational services.”

Politics › Soldier And Policemen Fight In A Bank In Calabar by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:22am On Jun 01, 2016
Bassey Inyang, Calabar

There was pandemonium yesterday inside the banking hall of a popular bank, located at Calabar Road, in the heart of Calabar, the Cross River State capital, following a fight that pitted a soldier against four riot policemen.

The incident occurred at about 11 am, causing confusion among the numerous customers who had gone to the bank to transact business.

The fight forced many customers to flee from the bank when, a policeman discharged a canister of tear-gas inside the banking hall filled with customers.

As some armed soldiers and armed policemen arrived, obviously on the invitation of their feuding colleagues, customers ran helter-skelter to avoid being caught in a possible crossfire.

The immediate cause of the fight between the lone soldier and the four policemen could not be ascertained, but a handful of men and staff of the bank intervened and stopped the fight.
When the fisticuffs ended, the soldier and some of the policemen had sustained injuries while the soldier’s uniform was torn.

The policemen, who were seething with anger, left the banking hall and waited outside while the soldier remained inside the hall.
Before long, some armed riot policemen and regular policemen drove-in in pickup trucks to the bank and demanded to see the soldier who was still holed up inside.

However, while the policemen were busy demanding to reach the soldier, a detachment of soldiers also arrived the bank in trucks; a development that led to sporadic shooting into the air, and scampering for safety by passers-by and onlookers.
But after wise counsel by the superior officers in both camps prevailed, some of the policemen and soldiers entered the banking hall to settle the rift.
