Crime › Desmond Nunugwo Dies In EFCC Custody by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:01pm On Jun 10, 2016 |
Desmond Nunugwo, a suspect who was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), over allegations of fraud, has died after spending six hours in EFCC custody.
Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesman, disclosed this on Friday, saying Nunugwo was taken into custody on Thursday, but died a few hours later. Uwujaren said Nunugwo’s demise was confirmed at a hospital where he was rushed to after he suddenly took ill.
“The late Nunugwu allegedly fraudulently obtained N91m from an acquaintance after he tricked her into believing that he had high net worth business associates in Dubai, United Arab Emirates who were at the verge of buying Nicon Insurance and convinced her of their disposition to help her stock fish business,” Uwujaren said in a statement.
“Consequently, she wired N91m into Nunugwo’s nominated account (Mainagge General Merchants) in Diamond Bank. After the transfer of the funds, Nunugwo became evasive forcing the complainant to report the transaction to the EFCC.”
“Consequently, Nunugwo was arrested in Utako, Abuja at about 5:33pm on Thursday, June 9, 2016. His statement was taken, where he admitted receiving the money from the complainant, with the additional information that he transferred N30m of the said money to Norway.
But he could not explain the whereabouts of the balance of N61m. “The suspect was detained at about 7:30pm, in the absence of anybody to take him on bail.
“Six hours later, he suddenly complained of discomfort and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.”
Uwujaren said after his arrest, the suspect confessed to transferring N30 million out of the money to Norway, but could not account for the balance. He added that the incident had already been reported at Wuse police station in Abuja, where investigation has commenced. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/fraud-suspect-dies-efcc-custody/ |

Politics › Biafra Anniversary Impasse: Gov. Obiano Pledges To Hospital Bills Of Victims by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:10am On Jun 09, 2016 |
Dom Ekpunobi, Onitsha ANAMBRA State Governor, Willie Obiano has pledged to offset hospital bills of some Biafra agitators who were injured during the celebration of the 49th anniversary of the declaration of Biafra.
The governor also called for calm over the crisis rocking Nkpor community.
Obiano made the pledge at Nkpor town hall when he came to sympathise with the people of Nkpor on the bloody clash between security operatives and Biafra agitators in which about 50 members were reportedly massacred and scores injured.
“We have compiled the list of the injured in different hospitals where they are hospitalised.”
The governor urged Nkpor people to always ward off undesirable elements who come into the community to tarnish their image.
“I came to sympathise with you for what happened. Before I came in as the governor, people were not sleeping, but now we sleep. Don’t allow strangers to disturb Nkpor.”
Obiano recalled how he deployed diplomacy to evacuate Boko Haram suspects brought into Ekwulobia Prisons and also gave befitting burial to Biafra war heroes. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/biafra-anniversary-impasse-obiano-pledges-to-offset-hospital-bills-of-victims/Lalasticlala

Career › Top 3 Nigerian Banks Where Staff Do Not Work In Fear by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:26pm On Jun 08, 2016 |
The mass sacking of personnel from various banks in Nigeria has in recent time stirred panic in the hearts of many Nigerians, especially the young ones graduating daily from various higher institutions across the country.
What is the way forward for the sacked professionals?
An economic melt-down has been blamed for the mass sacking of bank staff, a development which has caused very heated debates at various levels, causing many to doubt the possibility of a future for young Nigerian professionals. It is no news that Nigeria has so many youths (graduates) loitering the streets, with hopelessness boldly written on their faces. However, even as the hardship struck hard at the Nigerian economy, three banks were outstanding in the sense that they did not lay off staff, a feat which many of our new generation banks must strive to attain.
Below are the top three outstanding Nigerian banks which did not lay off their staff in troves. It is remarkable to note this because so many lives were destroyed, families broken due to the massive retrenchment of the times.
3. Guaranty Trust Bank
Having clinched the African Banker Award for innovation in 2016 under the leadership of Mr Segun Agbaje, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) has kept a very good record. Beyond bringing simple banking for every Nigerian regardless of class, GTB has kept in line with their principle of being an employer of choice which goes beyond the regular pay package.
GTB within the year in focus was one of the leading banks in terms of training and mentoring staff. Leveraging advancements in technology to pioneer innovative products, there is no doubt that their rapidly growing customer base has help them to keep and nurture their staff even in the face of a dying economy.
2. Zenith Bank Plc
With over 500 branches and business offices in prime commercial centres in all states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), there is no doubt that Zenith Bank is one of the largest in Africa. But being large is not all it takes in the banking industry; hence Zenith has continued to grow operating on a culture of excellence and strict adherence to global best practices.
Having grown its shareholder’s fund of N20million in 1990 to N509.25billion as at year end 2013, one can easily understand how this bank has been able to maintain its staff, seeing to their welfare and ensuring that they are not let go into the oblivion of the Nigerian economy.
1. Fidelity Bank Plc
Without mincing words, Fidelity is undoubtedly among the fastest growing commercial banks in Nigeria today. With a stable and innovative management as led by (Nnamdi Okonkwo), this bank’s staff are jealously admired in the banking industry. The bank has earned itself a reputation for quick service and SME banking.
University graduates also often seek to join the bank because of its graduate and leadership training programs. Little wonder why in 2014, Fidelity Bank announced the promotion of 963 out of its employees, on conclusion of its 2014 annual staff performance appraisal.
These three Nigerian banks have distinguished themselves and as such deserve worthy mention. This piece has been written as to give upcoming professionals in the banking sector an idea of where they can build their carrier without fear of sudden retrenchment, as well as to urge other banks within the sector to stop the massive dismissal of their staff, as this has a grave adverse effect on Nigeria as a nation. http://www.naij.com/853609-top-3-nigerian-banks.html?source=index_featured

Politics › Senate Summons Ngige Over Threat To Banks.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:08pm On Jun 08, 2016 |
The senate has summoned Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, over his threat to withdraw the license of any bank that retrenches its staff.
Rafiu Ibrahim, chairman senate committee on banking, insurance and other financial institutions, hinted the decision of the senate in a point of order he raised on the matter on the floor of the senate on Wednesday.
“The minister of labour made a statement threatening banks to stop retrenchment of staff. Banking being a very sensitive industry, any misguided statement can have a throwback on the industry; it can create a run on the banks,” he said.
“As the chairman of the senate committee on banking and finance, we want to invite the minister, the central bank and the banks to know if they are talking about retrenchment and what will happen.
“We want to know the basis of the directive and the basis of the threat.”
Senate President Bukola Saraki only reacted cursorily to Ibrahim’s statement since he came under 43- which has to do with personal explanation.
“They will come and meet before your committee isn’t it? So, it is just for our information,” he said. http://www.thecable.ng/senate-summons-ngige-threat-banks

irunooboo: When the military is deployed to the south east, you will change your minds. The herders have the right to live and work anywhere in the country. The land and territories in Nigeria belongs to the FG. Resisting an FG policy of such magnitude is equal to treason. Nnamdi kanu has really done a great job brainwashing the igbos into thinking their tiny five states is biafran territory. I do not support killer herdsmen, but the fulanis have the right to graze their cattle in peace. Biafra will never come in Jesus name Haba! Auntie Takitizi nah, Are Biafran's or Nnamdi Kanu the the cause of low turnout of customers?? Are they the cause of reduction in price of “Insertion”??. Please Blame Buhari, he's the cause of everything except “You Not Having Sense”. Don't channel all ur predicaments & fraustratons to IPOB's, Biafran's OR Nnamdi Kanu.. |
