Politics › Leave Our Lands, Itsekiri Leaders Warn Niger Delta Avengers.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 2:27pm On May 25, 2016 |
By Emma Amaize and Egufe Yafugborhi WARRI – ITSEKIRI leaders in Warri, Delta State, Wednesday, handed a strict warning to the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, the militant group that had claimed responsibility for the series of bombings on oil installations in the state, lately, to avoid Itsekiri land. Itsekiri Leaders of Thought, ILoT, an umbrella body of the Itsekiri ethnic group, gave the notice in a statement by the secretary, Mr. Edward Ekpoko and two others.
The leaders said: “We watched with surprise and anger the re-emergence and/or increase in insurgency in Warri area in particular the Niger Delta in general by a group, which calls itself the Niger Delta Avengers.”
“Its goal as claimed, among others, is to cripple the Nigerian economy if their selfish demands are not met. True to its promise between February and now major oil & gas pipelines have been vandalized bringing down our oil production to 1.65million bpd as against the 2.2million bpd estimated 2016 budget, the lowest in 22years “Following these unpleasant developments, the Itsekiri Leaders of Thought met and took the following resolutions: That the Itsekiri ethnic nationality condemns the criminal activities of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) and dissociates itself from the demands of the group.
“We can say that no Itsekiri person is a member of this nefarious group and we call on all our sons and daughters to assist the military and other law-enforcement agencies in arresting these criminal activities,” the leaders asserted.
According to them: “Niger Delta Region is not the home to ijaw ethnic nationality alone; several others including the Itsekiri, Urhobo, Bini, Ikwerre, Ibibio, Anang, Efik etc. are occupying it and most of the vandalized oil and gas facilities so far are on Itsekiri land. We warn those behind this heinous crime to leave off Itsekiri land.”
They also noted, “The agenda of the group is selfish and self-serving and does not have the support of the well-meaning people of the Niger Delta.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/leave-land-itsekiri-leaders-warn-niger-delta-avengers/ |
Politics › #BuhariOneYearLater: How Far Has Buhari Secured Nigeria? by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:34pm On May 25, 2016*. Modified: 2:06pm On May 25, 2016 |
image: http://images.dailytrust.com.ng/cms/gall_content/2016/5/2016_5$largeimg125_May_2016_130811183.jpg President Muhammadu Buhari’s work addressing the security challenges bedeviling the country started immediately on inauguration day on May 29 2015.
President Buhari, during the 2015 presidential campaign, derided the People Democratic Party (PDP) Administration of Goodluck Jonathan for not doing enough to check the excess of Boko Haram insurgents and other forms of crimes in the country.
In his inaugural speech, he ordered the armed forces to immediately relocate their command and control center to Maiguri Borno State, considered as the epicenter of insurgent activities in the North Eastern part of the country.
The president further demonstrated his commitment to campaign promises to check insecurity in the country by going on official visits to Nigeria’s contiguous countries which include Chad, Niger, Cameroun and Benin Republic to fast track agreements on a regional solutions to the insecurity in the area.
Significantly also, the president changed the leadership of the armed forces which reinvigorated the fight against the insurgents. This, in addition to the provision of military equipment, is believed to have in no small measure contributed to the successes of Nigerian armed forces have recorded in curtailing the activities of insurgents.
The president’ recent announcement that the Boko Haram group has been technically defeated evoked reactions from sectors of society with some of them pointing at the ability of the terrorist group to carry out suicide bombings and attacks in some remote areas in the north east.
However, as is evident in Operation Crackdown, a component of Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole, the Nigeria armed forces seems to have gained the upper hand in the counter insurgency operations now, carrying out daily clearance operations with reports of many insurgents killed or apprehended.
Also, large swathes of territory previously under the control of the insurgents appear to have been liberated by the military’s combined Special Forces and aerial operations. Many victims mostly women and children held captivity by the group have been rescued.
Recently, the administration’s counter insurgency efforts were boosted by the rescue of two schoolgirls who were abducted by Boko Haram 2014 in Chibok Borno State.
In spite of the work done in tackling the Boko Haram insurgents in the north east, emerging conflicts in other areas of the country, continue to threaten public peace and security in the country.
The government, it seems ,is obviously grasping with the aggressive resurgence of the farmers and cattle herders clashes in many communities across the north central states in the country.
Also another big challenge for the government is the renewed agitation for the division of Nigeria by separist groups in the south eastern part of the country like Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB.)
Another clear and present danger pertaining to the security of the country is the resurfacing of militancy in the South South part of the country with Niger Delta Avengers becoming infamous for attacking and blowing up infrastructures in the petroleum downstream sector.
Many have wondered if President Muhammadu Buhari score card in fighting insecurity in the country can be said to be in the excellent, good, pass, average or poor category.

Politics › FG To Repatriate Looted 300million Pounds From Jersey- Min. Of Foreign Affairs. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 11:53am On May 25, 2016 |
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, says the Federal Government is in the process of repatriating from Jersey the stolen 300 million pounds.
Onyeama stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at a news conference organised as part of activities to mark the one year anniversary of President Mohammadu Buhari’s administration. Jersey, an independent, English-speaking territory with a mix of British and French cultures, is the largest of the Channel Islands located between England and France.
The minister said that the money in Jersey would have been repatriated but for a last minute “objection’’ that was raised by the people, who were supposed to forfeit it. “We are just in the process of repatriating that in the UK itself.
Sometimes very often what happens is that the people, who have ownership or who claim to have ownership (of the money) might bring up a defence. “Like if you take the one in Jersey, it is like 300 million pounds or thereabouts; now everything had been done to repatriate the money.
“It was no longer contested; and then at the last minute, an objection was raised by the people, who were supposed to forfeit those funds.
“So, of course the authorities in Jersey were obliged – as much as they would have liked to just go ahead and repatriate it – to go through certain legal procedures, because the other party would have a lawyer and there were legal issues. “And then we have to now start going through that all over again; so that is really the challenge.’’
According to the minister, the important thing is that the process has been engaged. He said Nigeria would not relent in seeking to repatriate the alleged stolen funds. He also said that the process of repatriation of looted funds stacked in other countries like Switzerland and U.S. was in progress. “It is something that takes time – repatriation of stolen funds – because very often, you have to have an idea; you have to work on lead.’’
According to him, the repatriation of all other funds is in progress even though the Western countries where the stolen funds have been taken to, are creating barriers that will make it difficult to repatriate the monies. Onyeama, however, said the Federal Government would consider some mechanisms that would be deployed to make it “a bit easier’’ for Nigeria to get back the stolen funds.
“That is why the anti-corruption summit and the initiatives of Mr President are really focused on these Western countries to remove some of those barriers, some of those lengthy procedures that are in place, that make it possible for these people to delay and delay and delay.
“And that is what we are looking at; they are coming on board now these Western countries, more and more.
“And so, we just have to look at mechanisms to make it a bit easier when it’s more or less clear, that the stolen funds require us providing all the evidence and it is never easy.
“It’s never an easy task.” : http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/fg-repatriate-looted-300m-pounds-jersey-minister/

trillville: Nonsense, GEJ wasn't in power, Yaradua was.
Yaradua used up Obasanjo's crude oil savings to ameliorate our situation, that's why nigeria wasn't affected as badly.
GEJ, unlike Obasanjo, failed to save during the rainy days that's why we are feeling the hardship this harshly. Amechi & APC helped to destroy Nigeria's future: In January 2013, Nigeria has over $10 billion in it. Then, governor Rotimi Amechi led other Nigerian governors, under the umbrella of governors forum & ask the then President Goodluck Jonathan to share the money to the states. Jonathan & his minister of finance, world renowned economist, Dr. Ngozi Okojo Iweala insisted that the money should be SAVED FOR RAINNY DAYS. But, Rotimi Amechi led other governors to take FG to court. Jonathan's led FG then offered to settle the governor's out of the court by sharing $1 billion & saving up the rest for Nigeria & Nigerians. The governor's rejected the offer, they want it all. So, since the court mandated that the ECA is shared, the court gave judgement in their favour & the $10 billion was shared. FG lost, Nigeria lost, our children lost; essentially everybody lost. It's obvious that your ilk & some deluded fellows insulting & cursing GEJ but, turn around to laud APC & Amechi as saints forgetting that they(Amechi & other governors which some are now ministers) are the architect of Nigeria's present predicament. So, sir please do us a favour & SHUT UP |

Politics › Forex Scarcity: Marketers Still Depend On NNPC by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:14am On May 25, 2016 |
By Clara Nwachukwu Despite the ‘relief’ from the pains of scarcity, following the increase in the pump price of premium motor spirit, PMS, also called petrol to N145 per litre, and liberalisation of sourcing for foreign exchange, FOREX, majority of the oil marketers still depend on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, for their supplies. Dependence on NNPC supplies follows challenges being faced by petroleum products importers and oil marketers in sourcing for the requisite forex to enable them bring in refined products.
Nevertheless, with the gains of the pump price increase, marketers are now more willing to expand investments in downstream operations, including investing in private refineries. Pending final decisions on the refineries, the Major Marketers Association of Nigeria, MOMAN, revealed that its members has already invested about $2 million in ultra-sonic metering system for a more reliable volume capture from the vessel.
Speaking on the post-pump price increase status of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector at an interactive session with journalists in Lagos yesterday, the Executive Secretary of MOMAN, Mr. Obafemi Olawore, revealed that the hurdles in sourcing for forex from secondary sources were not yet over. He attributed such hurdles to marketers’ continued reliance on NNPC for fuel supplies, to complement the quantities they were able to bring in, noting that at N145/litre exchange rate was put at $1 to N285, while many marketers access forex at between N320 and N350 from the parallel market.
As a result, he said: “Marketers still depend on NNPC supplies, and the only way we can be free from this is for the full deregulation of the downstream sector.”
Denying widely held belief that marketers were reaping bounty profits at the expense of consumers through pump price increases, Olawore said: “Far from it, nobody is making premium profit anywhere. In fact we have remained in business for as long as we are able to cover costs.” Against this backdrop, he argued that the current practice of price adjustments ahead of full deregulation was very necessary.
He said: “This is the closes we have come to deregulation, as every pump price increase is one step further to deregulation. “With this latest increase, marketers will start making some reasonable money, with which we can reinvest in the downstream.
For instance, we have invested about $2 million in ultra-sonic meters because over the years, we have had issues of mistrust between marketers and NNPC agreeing on the volumes discharged from the vessel.
But with these ultra-sonic meters, there will be no disagreements. “Also, some of our members are also doing feasibility studies in private refineries and soon, people will begin to see a lot more investments in the sector to improve and enhance efficiency.” Explaining how the current pump price was arrived at, the MOMAN scribe, who was also a member of the Price Adjustment Committee, revealed that a number of prices were touted before arriving at the price band of between N135 to N145/litre, even as most marketers preferred the upper band.
He said: “N145/litre looked like the most affordable price. Initially, NNPC’s retail price was put at N104/litre at an exchange rate of N197 to $1, while other marketers was put at N145/litre at N285 to $1, but we argued that it will be suicidal for other marketers, so it was moved up to N120/litre.”
Again, we said that if the price margin between NNPC and other marketers was too wide, the purpose of the adjustment will be defeated, and it now became N143 for NNPC and N145 for other marketers.”
Olawore insisted that with full deregulation, marketers will not only be able to invest in refineries, as according to him, “full deregulation starts from the refining process. Marketers will be able to refine their own crude, sell at his own cost and be able to sell different grades of the same PMS such as regular, super, premium and five-star.”
He recalled that this was the practice in the past in Nigeria, before the indigenisation programme, which saw the acquisition of foreign owned assets by the Federal Government in the 1970s, including the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, a joint venture asset of the then BP and Shell. : http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/forex-scarcity-marketers-still-depend-nnpc/ |
