Politics › FG Inaugurates Presidential Committee, Task Force On Rice And Wheat Production.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:56am On Jun 08, 2016 |
The acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has inaugurated the Presidential Committee/Task Force on Rice and Wheat to facilitate its programme on self-sufficiency in food production.
The inauguration, which took place at the office of the Vice President on Tuesday, was attended by the governors of Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje; Kebbi, Abubakar Bagudu; and Ebonyi, Dave Umahi, as members of the committee.
Other members are the Minister of State for Agriculture, Mr Heineken Lokpobiri, the president of Rice Farmers Association and the president of Wheat Farmers Association.
Bagudu, who is the Chairman of the Committee Kebbi Governor, told State House correspondents that the committee’s terms of reference include “identifying all that we need to do in order to make Nigeria self-sufficient in rice and wheat production.”
He said the committee would find out means of stepping up the current efforts to produce both commodities in Nigeria for local consumption and for export.
He added that “we are optimistic that given the current efforts in place across the country, our farmers, and the increasing interest in investing in agriculture by many Nigerians, we should be able to achieve the target within a short time.
“That will lead to our national aspirations and there has been significant achievement in that respect.
“Last season, the governor of Kano and myself supported our farmers to produce more wheat.
“And wheat farmers have signed an agreement with flour millers which the millers agreed to obtain all that the wheat farmers are able to provide.
“We are seeing increasing interest in rice as well; many millers are now willing to work with farmer groups,’’ he said.
The governor observed that President Muhammadu Buhari had always emphasised the importance of farming and farmers to the Nigerian economy and that it was important that they got rewarded for their efforts.
According to Bagudu, the governor of Kano has been doing a lot and it is a model that other rice producing states should copy to attract more investors to the scheme.(NAN) Read more at http://www.herald.ng/fg-inaugurates-presidential-committeetask-force-rice-wheat-production/#oh7VhAVuq6kLt850.99 Lalasticlala

Politics › Buhari Not In London For Treatment- Femi Adesina by BeeBeeOoh(op): 12:04am On Jun 08, 2016 |
Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja The Presidency on Tuesday said President Muhammadu Buhari did not violate any rule in the treatment of his ear infection because he was treated by Nigerian medical experts in the country.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, stated this in an interview with our correspondent.
He was reacting to reports making the rounds that by traveling to London, Buhari violated the Federal Government’s rule that says that government officials will not be paid for foreign medical treatment, unless the case cannot be treated in Nigeria.
Adesina referred our correspondent to the statement he issued on Sunday about the President’s 10-day vacation.
He explained that Buhari did not go to London for treatment but to rest.
He said the President had been treated in Nigeria and would only seize the opportunity of his trip to carry out further evaluation.
Adesina said, “You can check the statement we issued on Sunday again. The President did not go to London for treatment.
“We made it clear in that statement that he had been treated in Nigeria here.
“The medical experts here only told him that since he will be in London, he can seize that opportunity for evaluation.
“The President has not broken any rule.”
The statement issued on Sunday read, “President Buhari will take 10 days off and travel to London from Monday June 6th, to rest.
“During the holiday, the President will see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for a persistent ear infection.
“The President was examined by his Personal Physician and an E.N.T Specialist in Abuja and was treated.
“Both Nigerian doctors recommended further evaluation purely as a precaution. http://www.punchng.com/buhari-not-london-treatment-presidency

– The Nigerian Navy has paraded a suspected militant leader along with six other suspects arrested for other crimes.– The suspect whose name was not given is accused of coordinating attacks on all the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) facilities.– The commander of the NNS Delta Commodore Raimi Mohammed said his men are working to apprehend other collaborators who were currently on the run.The Nigerian Navy has arrested the suspected coordinator of the multiple attacks on oil and gas facilities in the creeks of Delta state.
Niger Delta militants have vowed to continue the bombing of oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta region despite large military presence in the zone.
The suspected militant leader was paraded by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta in Warri on Monday, June 6 along with six other suspects arrested for other crimes, including one of the alleged killers of some security personnel and civilians at Batan community, Warri south-west council area of Delta state, on April 30, the Nation reports.
In an address at a press conference held at the base of the command in Warri, the commander of the NNS Delta, Commodore Raimi Mohammed said the arrest of the suspect who coordinator of the attacks on all the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) facilities would curtail further attacks on facilities in the area.
“Today I am pleased to announce that after several weeks of persistent efforts, the Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with other security agencies, has arrested the main coordinator of attacks on NNPC and Chevron oil and gas facilities that we have witnessed since May 4, 2016, with the attack on Chevron’s Okan valve platform, offshore Escravos.
“This arrest came after weeks of trailing and arrest of his foot-soldiers. It is important to mention that the suspect is also deeply involved in pipeline vandalism for stealing crude oil. He steals crude oil from about 35 abandoned oil well-heads and crude oil pipelines in Okpoko and Obodo in Warri South-West council area of Delta state. The Nigerian Navy believes with the arrest of this suspect, the attacks on Chevron/NNPC oil and gas facilities will abate”, the naval chief said.
The Navy boss who said the materials used in blowing up and vandalising facilities had been recovered noted that his men were working to apprehend other collaborators who were currently on the run.
Meanwhile, the United States of America has appealed to all parties involved in the dispute in the Niger Delta region to resolve their disputes through peaceful means.
According to Vanguard, the US embassy to Nigeria on Tuesday, June 7, in a statement issued by the embassy’s public affairs Unit in Abuja said is it was monitoring reports of attacks and other incidents in the Niger Delta, adding that it shared the concerns of all Nigerians about these attacks. http://www.naij.com/853082-good-news-navy-arrest-avengers-warlord.html?source=index_main http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/navy-parades-bombing-kingpin-others/http://www.herald.ng/nigerian-navy-nabs-niger-delta-militant-kingpin/Lalasticlala

Career › Skye Bank Disregards Fg's Order, Fires 200 Staffs.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:59am On Jun 07, 2016 |
Despite the embargo which the federal government placed on dismissal of staff in the banking sector, Skye Bank Plc fired at least 200 staff on Monday.
Citing petitions and complaints, Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, asked the banks to suspend retrenchment pending a stakeholders meeting on July 2.
Ngige said any action taken in that regard would be seen as illegal, saying a meeting on the way forward would be held on July 2.
“Following spate of petitions and complaints from stakeholders in the banking, insurance and financial institutions, I hereby direct the suspension of the on-going retrenchment pending the outcome of the conciliatory meetings in the industry,” he had said in a statement late Friday.
“In this wise, all the retrenchments and redundancies done in the last four months and all proposed ones should be put on hold pending the outcome of the proposed stakeholders’ summit for the banking, insurance and financial institutions’ employers and employees, slated for July 2.”
But the commercial bank went ahead with its action on the next working day after the directive was given.
One of those affected by the sack told TheCable that he picked up his own disengagement letter at the Victoria Island, Lagos headquarters of the bank.
The staff, who worked in one the bank’s branches in Ikeja, joined the organisation at its inception in 2006, and rose to the position of a senior banking officer (SBO).
The banker blamed the situation on the economic crisis, saying his former employers paid him off.
Skye Bank later confirmed the retrenchment of staff, but said those affected failed in the bank’s appraisal exercise held in 2015.
The bank also explained that those laid off were duly exited in line with the bank’s staff exit policy.
The current economic crisis has led to massive job loss, particularly in the banking sector.
Last week, Eco Bank relieved over 1,000 staff of their duties. The dismissal came a few months after 50 senior managers were sacked.
In its latest report, the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said 1.5 million Nigerians became unemployed in the first quarter of 2016.
The report said the country’s unemployment rate grew from 10.4 percent in the last quarter in 2015 to 12.1 percent. http://www.thecable.ng/skye-bank-disregards-fgs-order-fires-200-staffs Lalasticlala |

Politics › FG To Reduce Military Operations, Dialogue With Niger Delta Militants.. by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:41am On Jun 07, 2016 |
President Muhammad Buhari has constituted a high powered committee to begin an intensive dialogue with aggrieved Niger Delta militants. The federal government will also reduce military operations in the region to allow dialogue with the militants and other aggrieved individuals.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja as part of an update on the security challenges in the oil industry. Recent attacks by the Niger Delta Avengers have reduced Nigeria’s oil production from 2.2 million barrels per day to 1.6 million. The Nigerian Army had recently said dialogue with the group was not yet a realistic option because there was no sign that the militants were ready for dialogue.
Kachikwu, however, said the dialogue team which would be led by the National Security Adviser, retired Maj-Gen Babagana Monguno, has the service chiefs comprising Chief of Defence Staff and heads of the army, Navy, himself and Minister of Niger Delta as members.
“That list is basically in the working, what His Excellency has done is put a list of forerunners who will now sit down and begin to say who else should be co-opted in this. It is still work in progress,” the minister said.
He added that efforts were being made to create an integrated platform that involves representatives of the various communities in the region who would also engage the militants.
The minister further revealed that the intensity of military presence in the area would be reduced for a week or two for the dialogue to take place.
“My first appeal will be to my brothers who are engaged in these acts of protest to sheath their sword and dagger and get back to the table so that we can have conversation as Nigerians,” Kachikwu said.
“The president is very interested and has mandated that we should use every available opportunity to dialogue this issue and find a quick closure of this matter and this government is very committed to a long term solution to the issues that have bothered this geographical space for quite a while,” Kachikwu added.
Earlier yesterday before Kachikwu’s news conference, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, at a meeting with a delegation of the European Union (EU) led by its Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr. Michel Arrion, said the federal government was beefing up security in view of the current militancy in the Niger Delta. Osinbajo said at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja that government was engaging leaders and people of the Niger Delta on the spate of attacks on oil installations in the area.
According to him, besides reaching out to people in the area, the government was also beefing up security. He said the government was working to minimise the losses arising from the attacks. He said the focus of the Buhari presidency was to ensure that the man on the street in the Niger Delta receives the benefit from all that is available there.
He also called on the leaders in the region to be accountable to the people. Arrion said his delegation visited Osinbajo as a follow-up on President Buhari’s meeting with EU leaders during his visit to the continent. Politics › Why Buhari Can't Spend Recovered Loot- Naij.com by BeeBeeOoh(op): 6:55am On Jun 06, 2016 |
– President Muhammadu Buhari cannot touch the recovered loots because of legal issues– Federal Government says has set up an account for the stolen funds– Presidency revealed that the loots will be spent on infrastructureDespite recovering stolen Nigerian money, President Muhammadu Buhari might not be able to spend the monies on urgent needs of the country, the chairman Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay has revealed.
Speaking with Punch newspaper, the Professor of law said the Federal Government has set up an account for the stolen funds.
“Regarding the funds frozen under the interim forfeiture, the Federal Government can’t touch it for now because certain cases have not been concluded and the forfeiture is interim because technically, the court can order the release to the owners if the occasion demands it but if it goes the other way, there will be a permanent forfeiture order and that is when the properties would accrue to the government and would therefore be used for the benefit of Nigerians,” Professor Sagay said.
He added that the decision not to name looters was made in a bid to encourage others, who had stolen, to return money.
“The way I see it, it is more political than legal. It is not party politics but about conduct. I believe the government feels that if you name names, those who are about to come out and also bring out whatever has been looted, would withdraw.
“On the legal side, I don’t see the problem that is being talked about because once a person is going to be charged to court for corruption or illegally acquiring resources, there is no liability in announcing it.
“After all, we have been seeing the names of all those accused and charged. So, the main reason is to encourage others, who are still hiding their loot and speculating what to do, to come out and hand over the loot so that the country can recover more of what has been stolen.”
Speaking further, he said the decision not to name looters might also have been in a bid not to embarrass some Nigerians who received government funds without knowing that the money was for arms or that the money was stolen.
“There are some people who actually received those assets and money without knowing that it was stolen or whose knowledge of the source would be very difficult to establish.
“So, if you are in a situation, where you thought your political party had raised money legitimately and you were given an amount for the purpose of campaign, then you may have a strong case against any criminal charge like the newspapers, who have received money, but you may be willing to return the money having found out that it was illegitimately acquired.”
Meanwhile, Presidency has revealed that the recovered loots will be spent on infrastructure.
According to the special adviser to the President on media and publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, “The President said it sometimes ago in Kaduna that recovered money would be spent on the development of infrastructure. The infrastructure includes roads and railways among others,” he said.
Mr Adesina added: “Nigerians can be assured that the money would be spent transparently and judiciously. They have nothing to fear.
“These funds would be spent to better the lives of Nigerians; this is what this government is committed to.”
Recall that the Muhammadu Buhari-led government revealed that N78, 325,354,631.82; $185,119,584.61; £3,508,355.46 and €11, 250 had been recovered from alleged looters.
According to the FG, the funds were recovered separately by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation; Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission and the Department of State Services. http://www.naij.com/850745-revealed-buhari-cant-spend-recovered-loots-yet.html?source=index_main Lalasticlala

Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN said at the weekend that the federal government may not want to name looters of the national treasury so as not to discourage others from returning stolen funds.
Falana while reacting to the list of cash recoveries from looters made public over the weekend by the government said the figure announced had not taken cognizance of the totality of the funds that had been recovered by all the anti-graft agencies.
“From the information at my disposal the figure announced by the information minister is a fraction of what the EFCC has recovered and deposited in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). In order not to discourage others from returning stolen fund the government may not want to name the looters yet. In fact, some of the looters who have stolen the bulk of the missing money who are on the run are being pursued in different jurisdictions in the world”, Falana said Read more at http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/fg-may-/quonot-release-looters-names--falana/149941.html#AZwhkAuWDvSPvtGm.99 Lalasticlala
