The Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, has appealed to the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC, not to disappoint Nigerians again in the planned protest against what it described as the senseless and unacceptable increase in the pump price of petrol by the All Progressives Congress, APC government led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement on Monday, by its Executive Director, Comrade Ibuchukwu Ezike, the CLO said, “We are making this appeal in the aftermath of the 2012 Occupy Nigeria Protest against the same practice by the ousted Peoples Democratic Party, PDP government in which Labour consciencelessly disappointed all its allies and Nigerians.

“CLO has held consultation meetings with its members and affiliates nationwide who are very keen in joining the protest to demand government’s action lacking in human face and a gross violation of the rights of the citizens and laws of the land.

“We make bold to reiterate CLO’s position that what government after government has done over the years has been to increase the pump prices of petroleum production and not the removal of oil subsidy that has been since withdrawn since the military government. [size=13pt]It is agonising to note that a pump price of petrol sells for N15 equivalent in war torn Libya, while Nigeria, Africa’s second largest producer of oil is selling at the unacceptable and criminal price of N145 per litre.[/size]

“CLO condemns this increase and demand a reversal to the old N86.50 pump price.

“We recall that in 2012, APC elements agreed with Labour and Civil Society Organisations, CSOs that there was no subsidy on oil. Where did this magical subsidy that is being withdrawn by the Government coming from? [size=13pt][color=#007700]APC has deceived Nigerians enough.[/color][/size]

The protest must go on till victory is won by Nigerians as usual. “CLO, therefore, enjoins all its members nationwide to join the organised Labour in the planned protest to drive home the demand to reverse to the old price imposed on Nigerians few months ago.”

The federal government has said that there is no alternative to the new policy of deregulation of the price of petrol and  appealed to the leadership of labour unions and all Nigerians for understanding, as the current hardship would not last long.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Monday, the Minister of Information , Alh. Lai Mohammed, said that the paucity of foreign exchange has made it impossible for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to continue to solely import petrol.

His words, “Many have been asking why this would happen at this time and what triggered the decision concerning the new framework for petrol products supply, distribution and pricing.

“Gentlemen, we have no choice than to liberalize the price of petrol, if we are to end the crippling fuel scarcity that has enveloped the country, ensure the availability of the products and end the suffering of our people over the lingering scarcity.”

Abuja—Petrol stations in the country seem not to be satisfied with the recent hike in the price of petrol to between N135 and N145 per litre, as majority of them now resort to under-dispensing of the product.

Vanguard observed in Abuja and environs that a number of the petrol stations, though selling at N145 per litre, had manipulated their pumps, and were now defrauding motorists with incorrect measurements. Petrotec filling station in Suleja, Niger State, along the Abuja-Kaduna Expresway, was selling at N135 per litre, but a motorist complained that he bought 20 litres of petrol but was served about 15 litres.

At the NNPC Mega Station at Kado in Abuja, one motorist complained that before the hike, it took N2,500 to fill his tank when it was half tank but was shocked to spend N5,000 to fill his tank in the same position at the NNPC petrol station. He wondered why it would take double the initial amount, when the price was not doubled. Motorists called on the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, and other regulatory agencies to come to the aid of motorists and sanction defaulting petrol stations.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics, NAEE, weekend, emphasized the need for the Federal Government to fix the country’s refineries, stating that if all the refineries were working at about 80 to 90 per cent capacity, the price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, would drop to between N115 and N125 per litre.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Professor Wumi Iledare, President, NAEE, also called for the proper calibration and adjustment of the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency’s, PPPRA, pricing template for a market dictated margin.
