The Department of State Services said in Abuja on Tuesday that it had arrested a student of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Abdussalam Yunusa, who was recruiting for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. A statement issued by the spokesperson for the security agency, Mr. Tony Opuiyo, said that the suspect was arrested in Kano. He said that the arrest of the suspect was sequel to available intelligence, which he said indicated the suspect’s terrorist antecedents and covert drive to indoctrinate and recruit susceptible youths in the country. The statement said, “On January 17, 2016 one Abdussalam Yunusa, a recruiter for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria was arrested in Kano. “His arrest was sequel to available intelligence which indicated his terrorism antecedents and covert drive to indoctrinate and recruit susceptible youths in the country.” Before his arrest, Opuiyo said that Yunusa had completed arrangements to embark on a journey to join an ISIS terrorist training camp in Libya, with other Nigerians whom he recruited for the group. He gave the names of the recruited ones as Muhammed Rabi’u, Yahaya Jimoh and a female, Zainab Sunday. He said that Yunusa was a 400-level undergraduate of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, where he was studying for a degree in Information and Media Technology before his arrest. He was alleged to be a member of an extremist cell, comprising one Ibrahim and Abubakar Ligali, whom he (Yunusa) revealed was currently undergoing terrorist training in Libya. Yunusa was said to have listed a Republic of Niger national, Ibrahim Jihad, and one Aminu as other ISIS agents operating in Nigeria and West African. The cell was said to be funded by one Abu-sa’ad Al Sudani, a media expert with the extremist group. The statement said the group was funding terrorist activities through electronic money transfers. By Peter Egwuatu LAGOS — Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, charged the Federal Government to create enabling environment to attract private investment which is needed to grow the economy. Also, the Senate Committee chairman on Trade and Investment, Senator Sam Egwu, charged industries within the county to operate within the laws of the land as the National Assembly was ready to make laws that would attract investment in Nigeria. Obasanjo Speaking at the official opening of British American Tobacco Company Nigeria, BATN, head office in Lagos, Obasanjo said: “Government must partner with private sector to attract both local and foreign investments. ”In 1999, Nigeria emerged as a democratic nation and needs sustenance and support from private sector from within and outside its economy. A few investors were skeptical about the political and economic climate of Nigeria. The government then embarked on reforms programme and intensify calls for investment in Nigeria, bringing various investors and providing them with necessary information and government incentives and opportunity. So, BATN was among the first set of companies to take us serious and believe in the country. “In the year 2001, BATN was the first tobacco company to sign a Memoradum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Grovernment which led to an investment of $150 million and the modernisation of its Zaria factory.” He noted that the commissioning of the company’s office complex in Lagos signified continuity of business in Nigeria and it was also in the midst of the economic challenges that the company had showcased its entrepreneur mindset and had continued to play a key role in the social economy of the county, in the area of agricultural development and afrostation, corporate social responsibility, economic development partnership among others. He pointed out that it was at such a time like this we are reminded of the importance of the role of private sector as the engine for economy growth. In his remark, Senator Sam Egwu said: “The state of our economy today demands there is need for economic diversification to mineral resources to deliver economic growth. “As a result, massive industrial development and expansion of existing industries must be rigorously pursuit and BATN seems to be leading in this. “However, industries in Nigeria must operate within the laws of the country and in line with international best practices, considering the peculiarity of its products. “As legislators, the Senate, and by extension, the National Assembly Committees on Industry, are committed to ensuring the creation of conducive environment that will enable the private sector to enhance massive industrial development in the country." By Chidi Nkwopara OWERRI—Imo State Government has appealed to the state and national leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to consider the long standing cordial relationship existing between them and drop their planned shutdown of the state. Labour had threatened to shutdown the state if Governor Rochas Okorocha failed to recall the over 3,000 workers of the 19 parastatals, agencies and departments, which he summarily sacked recently. According to a press statement signed on behalf of the Governor by his Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, government appealed to labour not to embark on any strike that would not benefit anyone. “The national leadership of the NLC should be patriotic enough to advise the leadership of the NLC in the state to honour their invitations to participate in the high-powered 18 – member committee set up by the state governor to review the cases of the staff affected by the suspension in question, so that the matter can be resolved amicably in the spirit of no victor, no vanquished”, Okorocha pleaded. While recalling that the inauguration of the committee could not take place last Tuesday, because the Labour Representatives did not come for the exercise, Okorocha equally recalled that the Committee has the state NLC Chairman, the Trade Union Congress, TUC Chairman, the State Chairman of Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, and the Chairman of National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, as members. Others chosen from labour unions are the Representative of Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Representative of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Imo State University, IMSU, Imo Polytechnic, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Chairman of Imo State branch of Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, and representative of the Judiciary Service Union of Nigeria, JUSUN Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/sack-of-3000-workers-imo-govt-begs-labour-to-shelve-strike/#disqus_thread Cc: Mynd44, Lalasticlala |
