Since the beginning of this brouhaha about Edo governorship election, I have been unconcerned.
Not because I have exited being a political commentator. No.
As a Senior Advocate of Personality Politics (SAPP), I have always believed that political parties are mere clubs where politicians regularly join and leave in pursuit of their political ambitions which ideally should be leadership and service to the people.
Unfortunately, the political ambition of an average Nigerian is to rule and loot (apologies to the very few sincere and accountable ones).
As regards the situation of Edo state today, I can only feel sorry for them.
The battle in Edo today can be likened to a lion and a tiger chasing an antelope.
The only assured thing is that the antelope must be eaten.
It's just a matter of who the eater is.
Asue Ighodalo becoming governor means Obaseki continuing his grip on the resources of the state. He becomes a godfather.
Monday Okpebholo becoming governor means Oshiomhole achieving his long lingering quest of becoming a godfather.
The only option for a prosperous Edo state would have been Olumide Akpata.
I heard you saying "you wish" so that's set aside, maybe for now.
Whatever the outcome of this election is, Edo people should brace up for another 8 years of misery.
It's either Obaseki continues or Oshiomhole takes over.

i get what you are saying but it really does not matter who appoint the inec chairman what is most important is having systems in place that block human excesses which we currently don't have. Inec is one of the only organisations in Nigeria that is improving but it is doing so at a slow pace because politician on both sides prefer it that way. Somebody would have to still appoint the chairman. I was very careful with my choice of words Electronic voting Machine with emphasis on paper trails. First the system properly designed cannot be hacked without trace. I know this for a fact. 2 even if an insider was able to hack the network there is a paper trail that everyone can see which can be used to prove the result are not accurate. The emphasis is the paper trail. Stealing the voting machine would be useless so you don't even require poling agent. Little modification inec can do now before going for any up cycle election. Is to use already existing computer vision technology from the bvas to not only do facial accreditation but to take pictures of all ballot paper used and then the bvas automatically collate the results. The collated results and the ballot used are automatically sent to the server. The result could be signed and then be written on paper and given to agents. The paper copy is also scanned and uploaded. Political parties would automatically have all documents to prove over voting. The reason why society functions is by building systems that even if people go rogue they could be easily be caught. The moment where it becomes very easy to prove over voting, and the system is transparent then you eliminate the need for even going to court. The only thing you could not solve is vote buying and voter inducement that would be left to the police. But ballot stuffing can be easily solved. Even as bad as the process is you can see where over voting occurs. Chidoka former aviation minister did nice analysis of the results using bvas report and irev data. You cannot prove over voting in court using just those two you still need polling unit result and voter register from polling unit

It does matter who or what process ushers in the head of our institutions!

If the process that brought in the INEC chairman and REC officials are flawed,our elections will be filled with so much controversy no matter the mode of transmission!

If the process that selected and appointed the head of our judiciary is tainted with bias and corruption,the electronic process will be skewed to favour the ruling party who will arrogantly order the opposition to go to court knowing it will amount to nothing as they are in control of that arm of government!

If the means through which the IGP is chosen is based on religion,seniority and loyalty to the presidency,then do not expect the IGP or police to guarantee free and fair election for all and sundry!


The process is far more important than the tool used for election!
A tool or equipment is fraudulent in the hands of a corrupt and an unaccountable INEC official who knows the electoral law cannot punish them if they do what is wrong!
The process not the tools or equipment make our institutions credible!
If we must build a strong institution,we must ensure the process for recruitment is transparent and the recruited accountable to the people and not to the presidency!

the reason for rigging is because politician know it is almost impossible to prove rigging with the current manual process their is too much human involvement. To prove over voting you would need all polling unit result, bvas accreditation records and voter register for each polling unit. Good luck getting those documents that is if your polling agent have not been compromised. The moment all this individual components are electronically available As bad as the judiciary or inec staff would be one cannot hide under technicalities because the over voting or vote allocation would be very easy to prove. With electronic voting machine having paper trails all the ballot used and results would be electronically available. The results are automatically collated no room for mistakes as results are real time. You can file petition after results are announced as all all the required documents needed to prove over voting are immediately available.

As much as I agree with your submission about the reliability and effectiveness of electronic transmission of results,there are certain aspects you are missing from my point!

Remember that the electronic transmission isn't full proof and can be altered to favour the ruling party!

All that is needed is a call to INEC chairman instructing him to alter the results and refuse any opposition from inspecting the BVAS or database where these information are stored!

This is why for INEC to be fully and truly independent,the authority of the president to select either chairman or REC officials should be expunged from the constitution!
Secondly,there should be punishment for the electoral regulatory agency when they default on their own laws!
U cannot declare a mode of transmission only to change it during the election proper!

Same is applicable for security and the judiciary!

As long as the president is the one who selects the CJN,these judges will always be subservient to the president esp when their opponents are told to go to court!

No matter how many policemen are sent to protect each ward,ballot snatching will never stop and the police will even assist the agberos to steal more!

Until we have a truly independent police, judiciary and INEC,I do not expect this election to be different from others whether past or previous!
