The United Kingdom has gone a long way to eradicate racism in the work place, but unfortunately Africans know too well, that it is still there. Your accent, the colour of your skin stand you out and in certain cases, make it hard for you to fit in. Laws cannot prevent work place cynicism and the silent slurs targeted at you for being the colour you are. A Fly Girl is Amanda Epe’s debut book, an inspirational memoir of her days working with British Airways; travel tales through the lens of a black African woman. Her readers’ journey with her from Las Vegas to India, as she explores the world whilst working for possibly the best airline in the world. Epe’s well documented and interesting book is the first narrative of its kind as she is the first seminal storyteller on the narrative of being black Cabin crew with British Airways. Amanda Epe writes articles, essays, poetry, fiction and self help; her work has been featured in publications and anthologies in the United Kingdom, United States and in Nigeria. She spoke recently in an interview. Why did you write this book? I was obliged to write this for my spirit and I didn't want to take this story unpublished to the grave. What is your favourite part of your story? If I had to put a bookmark in one place it would be the active, funny, bright and sunny story in Miami. At what time or point did you feel the need to write this story? It was strongly felt in 2013, a time of writing in my serene state and being fully inspired. It was the starting point anyway, at least I put a pen to paper and wrote the first paragraph, most of the work continued the following year. Racism occurs in different ways to different people, and many people talk about this every day. What more are you adding to the conversation? My angle has some insight into the in-depth thoughts of being black and wearing the union jack. Is there a place for the woman in the business community? During my life in the air, I worked with business savvy women and I reflect on one in particular that endeavoured to become a grand entrepreneur through trade and travel, she was an inspiration. Woman are not just in business but are on top. I admired a recent report of a Black British woman Karen Blackett who is the first businesswoman to top the Powerlist 100, and also Folorunsho Alakija on the billionaire list, the latter an example of how times have advanced with women working and trading in oil. When you talk to women across the world, what is the one thing they tell you? We are all singing the same song but with various tunes, in the western world equality is still sought, and across the globe we are coming out, stepping up or striving to make our mark. Is it a question really that black people are not well integrated into the community? In comparison to other western nations I feel that black community are somewhat integrated, until we are fully empowered economically there will always be marginalisation You have a very British accent, is this book personal then? How can you suffer racism when you are British? My Britishness has a prefix, readers can learn more about this concept in reading some chapters in the book. Returning home to Nigeria… is that an option? Good question, and to run from racism is just running, if I had ran away as a new recruit I wouldn't be telling this story, how long must one fight is another story. In the play Pandora's Box by playwright Ade Solanke this issue of returning to Nigeria was discussed, one of the characters the uncle was telling the diaspora his niece and her friend to "stay there" (U.K) and fight. The friend who had decided to make a new life in Nigeria (the character Bev whose parents migrated to Britain from the Caribbean) argued against him speaking about England saying " Uncle, I'd love to contribute to my country. I've tried to. But do they want my contribution? Well, I refuse to be wasted!" She goes on to say that we are more than English and wanting to discover another part of her. I agree with the character, and Nigeria is certainly an option. Look at the statistics of Black British actors and entertainers who cross the pond heading to USA. You are a very busy woman campaigning for women and their issues, is this another empowering tool? It is simply my writing journey although it is part of empowering if a woman reader feels inspired in her journey by relating to my writing/storytelling, then that is a success for me. What next? The mission continues, I must follow the call to write and to work, to do the things that give me joy, the works that are creative and that can be shared. Why should I buy your book? Two words, I guarantee you'll engage and enjoy it. What will our readers hear about your book that they haven’t heard elsewhere? This author shares her experiences and thoughts from her travels, and discusses taboo topics and issues not easily for conversation in our and the wider community. If you were me right now, what sort of questions should you I be asking? O.K I would like to tell you about the euphoric feeling of delivering my debut, and that it was created for people like me, but also beyond that target group. If you ask about my readership I feel that outside of Black women in diaspora and at home, this book relates and can be read by an international audience of men and women. How long did it take you to write this book? About nine months flat Is there a part 2 coming on? My journey and travels continue, a travel series perhaps. Two thoughts before you go. Many people are afraid to fly, my thoughts on this analogy is to feel the fear and still take off. I have overcome that fear of writing and sharing so please do share your stuff! Where can we find more about your book? A Fly Girl, the kindle version is now available on Amazon. A Fly Girl will be available in print from Amazon, Waterstones and all good retailers by January 2015. From a relatively unknown UK-based artiste, Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo, D’Banj has become one of the biggest musicians in Africa over the last decade. Widely known as the Kokomaster, D’banj has several local and international awards and endorsement deals to his name today. Singer D'banj is being threatened with legal action as a result of debts he is claimed to be owing However, the pop star seems to be going through an unpleasant period in his career as some people who claim to be owed by D’banj are threatening a legal action against him. According to NET investigations, the issuance of dud cheques and non-payment of accrued debts top the list of infractions against the DB Records boss who now calls himself Bangalee. As things stand, D’banj may be dragged to court by a top oil and gas industry player, Henry Ojogho, Vice Chairman of Broron Group. Ojogho, who is also the Vice Chairman of MindHub Tehnologies, an integrated Rice farming and milling production company, alleges that D’banj, through his company, DKM Media Limited, obtained a loan of over N60m from him in January 2013 and has not paid back the said sum despite signing an undertaking to do so. In addition, the man is claiming that the entertainer has issued two cheques already; one on December 20, 2013 and another on January 20, 2014, both of which had to be returned unpaid after presentation because the pop star’ accounts were not funded enough. According to documents obtained by NET, a firm of attorneys, D.U.ODIGIE & CO acting on behalf of Henry Ojogho, in a letter addressed to D’Banj, wrote: ‘Following the default by D KINGS MEDIA LIMITED to pay the debt to our client, and pursuant to the aforementioned personal Guarantee/ Memorandum of Undertaking, you issued two post- dated cheques; one for the sum of $240,000,000 (Two Hundred and Forty Thousand United States Dollars Only) dated 20/12/2013, and the other for the sum of N15,000,000,00k (Fifteen Million Naira Only) dated 20/1/2014. Both cheques were returned unpaid on presentation by our client. ‘We are further informed that although you thereafter paid the sum of N8, 600,00.00K (Eight Million, Six Hundred Thousand Naira Only) out of the N15,000,000,00k (Fifteen Million Naira Only) (in) Cheque, leaving a balance sum of N6,400.000.00k (Six Million, Four Hundred Thousand Naira Only), you have failed, neglected or refused to redeem the entire or any part of the $ 240,000.00 (Two Hundred and Forty Thousand United State Dollars) cheque.’ Further investigations by NET revealed that Henry Ojogho is not the only wealthy man claiming D’banj owes him in recent times. There are a number of others, according to our sources. So bad is the situation that an industry source who pleaded anonymity, chides the ‘Igwe’ singer thus: ‘Using the sympathy and naivety of unsuspecting investors coming into the game to dupe them is criminal and absolutely destroying the image of the industry at large, because in the long run it affects and corrupts the judgment of genuine investors who would pull out for fear of being duped.’ NET also contacted the law firm of the claimant and a lawyer at the chambers but who doesn’t want his name disclosed spoke to us, saying: ‘It is true that we have such a case in court but the case is yet to come up for hearing so I cannot comment on it yet. ‘Professionally, I cannot make any comments now because the defendant has not been served the court papers because they said he’s out of the country. But, any moment from now, he’ll receive the writ of summons. As soon as he receives it, then it becomes a public case. ‘But for now that he has not been served, the law does not allow me to make such comments because as far as the law is concerned, the man is not aware yet, but I can confirm to you that the matter is in court.’ Other people D’banj allegedly owes… D’banj It is alleged that D’banj approached a number of very wealthy people with business proposals, urging them to invest in the industry and set up entertainment companies. With the promise of developing artistes and huge returns on investments, the businessmen became interested only for him to collect their money and move on to the next target with the same ‘format’. Below is a list of a number of names he allegedly owes according to sources. WALTER WAGBATSOMA (200,000 Pounds) Mr Walter is a billionaire with investments in major areas, ranging from oil and gas to real estate, banking, equities and even insurance. He is the founder and executive Vice Chairman of Ontario Oil and he’s one of the first men who were said to have handed money to D’banj, with a whopping sum of 200,000 Pounds said to be involved. PRINCE D. OKONKWO ($200,000) He’s the chairman, Board of Directors of Tetrazini Group of Companies and he is said to have given about $200,000 to D’banj in the name of investing in entertainment. When the issue with Prince Okonkwo got out of hand, D’banj was said to have sought help from Dapo Abiodun, boss of Heyden Oil and Gas who helped him take care of the debt through a repayment plan. The Koko Concert Drama… Still fresh in the memory of Nigerians is the controversial 2012 edition of Koko Concert in which people had to trek for miles before getting to the venue and back. This is not forgetting the inhuman treatment meted out to those with regular tickets. D'banj reportedly made close to N87m from tickets sales alone at that event and reports allege he collected a whooping $500,000 from GTBank and other title sponsors of the show. D’banj is reported as yet to recover from the 2012 Koko Concert though, which is believed to have led him not just into debts but made him part ways with several of his closest allies. Is D’banj broke? D’banj’s last real album, a ground-breaking body of works titled The Entertainer was released in September 2008, before he released the DKM compilation in June 2013. It’s safe therefore to say D’banj hasn’t released an album in the last 6 years, yet he has managed to stay very relevant in the industry, which is largely due to his staying power and tenacity. In 2014, he has been part of several campaigns in agriculture, poverty alleviation, economy, and recently became the first African Ambassador for BeatsByDre having signed a deal with tech giants, Apple. He is also putting finishing touches to plans to drop an album in celebration of his 10th year anniversary in the music industry. Having said that, it’s evident that while he has not headlined any major show in the last 6 months, D’banj has other multiple streams of income. However, it is amazing that despite D’banj’s remarkable success and many endorsement deals over the years, he has no building or house of his own. The place he currently calls home, a building on Osaro Isopkai Street in Lekki is a rented apartment. As a matter of fact, investigations revealed his current rent in the said apartment will expire this month. D’banj returned to the country on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 after spending about 3 months in the United States of America. And now that he is back, a court case bearing his name might come up for hearing soon, unless he is able to settle or pacify those who are reportedly waiting to swoop on him. source: http:///1viZyxp http://dailypost.ng/2014/11/24/dbanj-hit-messy- debt-scandal/?wt=4 |

The attention of the Hon Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal CFR, has been drawn to publications in the media to the effect that the Inspector General of Police has ordered that he, Speaker, be invited to the Force Headquarters and that he be arrested if he resisted. The Honorable Speaker wishes to state that he is a law abiding citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who has no immunity against arrest and prosecution except privileges as may be provided by the Legislative Powers and Privileges Act. Accordingly , the Hon Speaker states for the records that he is available, ready and willing to answer any lawful invitation from any of the Security agencies on any matter for which they may require his attention. The Speaker expresses dismay at the unprofessional conduct of the Nigerian Police in the attempt to stop him from accessing the House of Representatives chambers on the 20th November 2014 to preside over the Special Session of the House on the State of Emergency Extension requested by Mr President, for which he had recalled members from their working recess. Most disgraceful is the false statement later issued by the Police in which they claimed that in the lawful exercise of their duties “ Alh Aminu Tambuwal CFR, arrived the venue with a motley crowd, who broke the cordon, assaulted the Police and evaded due process”. This blatant falsehood coming from a law enforcement agency, that is expected to be neutral and lawful, is unfortunate, to say the least. For the avoidance of doubt, the Hon Speaker came to National Assembly accompanied by Hon Members as is customary during any sitting of the House. They all came with their official vehicles but were disallowed from driving into the premises. Certainly Hon Members, who arrived the precinct of the National Assembly in response to a call to perform an urgent, critical national assignment, cannot be described by any self respecting institution as “a motley crowd “ It is important to remind the Nigeria Police Force that as a public institution that provides common services for all the arms of government, they must not allow themselves to be used by one of the arms to undermine the others. The Inspector General of Police, Abba Sulaiman may have given orders for the arrest of Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Daily Trust has learnt. Sources told Daily Trust a similar order has been handed down to the Department of State Security (DSS.) The orders were given following the fracas that broke out at the National Assembly on Thursday where members of the House of Representatives were confronted by armed security personnel who threw canisters of teargas at the speaker and other lawmakers to stop them from accessing the parliament building. The speaker and some of his colleagues who supported him beat the security cordon and later held a brief plenary thereby stopping some members in their tracks who had gathered protected by scores of Police and DSS operatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against the leadership of the House. Sources at the Police headquarters revealed that the Police chief gave the order for Tambuwal's arrest after a meeting with Vice President Namadi Sambo and the National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki. "I can confirm to you that the order for his arrest has been given today (Friday). The signal from the IG's office specifically directed the FCT and Sokoto State commissioners of Police to serve Tambuwal with notice of invitation to the force headquarters and if he resists, he should be arrested immediately, “the source revealed. "The involvement of Sokoto CP was because the Speaker was sighted in Sokoto on Friday where he picked the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship form for the coming elections. It was assumed that he was out of Abuja as such other police divisions were involved in the matter." Sources at the meeting in Villa indicate that both the Vice President and the NSA chastised the Police boss for the failure of his men to prevent Speaker from entering the national assembly premises. "The NSA was particularly angry and told the IG in clear terms that he doesn't know his job. He said how did the Speaker and the members break a cordon organised by the FCT Police commissioner. The NSA then made it clear that the Police authorities must rectify the anomalies or they will face the consequences. The IG then said Tambuwal will be arrested for questioning.” source: dailytrust |

As part of the steps to rescue the abducted 219 Chibok girls, the Defence Headquarters has confirmed that troops are already in Sambisa Forest where the girls are purportedly being held hostage. The DHQ was however silent on the next line of action claiming only that the military has a “major plan” in the offing. It said that contrary to insinuations, Nigerian soldiers are trained for counter-terrorism. The Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade made the disclosure at a session with Editors and Defence Correspondents, which was organized by Nigerian Initiative, a non-governmental organization active in the redefinition of Nigerians’ perception of their country. He said: “What makes it difficult to get to Sambisa Forest? All of it is strategic, gentlemen. We are not even completely out of Sambisa Forest as I am talking to you. We are in Sambisa Forest and we are in places contiguous to it. “But we have a major plan in mind which I should not be disclosing now. We are not weak, we have the capacity.” Meanwhile fears were yesterday raised that Boko Haram terrorists may have relocated the over 200 abducted girls of Government Secondary School, Chibok and other abducted victims from Sambisa forest to their new haven in Balmo Forest, which borders Borno and Bauchi states. |
