As we go about our life the need for security comes to play. Today I will share with you some common misconceptions about security. Things that you have believed but are not really true. A safe neighbourhood is good enough: it is advisable to live in safe neighbour however the question you must ask yourself is, Is it truly safe? Is it protected all the time? You should know that burglars and criminals do not care if your neighbourhood is safe. More importantly 8 out of 10 burglars live in the neighbour and most burglaries take place between 9am and 3pm when adults are at work. Also most kidnap cases are masterminded by family and friends. So besides living in a safe neighbourhood, you need other security measures to be truly safe. Home security systems do not really deter criminals: Are you really sure about this? Researches say the opposite. Most cases criminal spotting home security devices will rather look for another target or another opportunity when those devices are not present. I have a security dog: dogs are good for security they reduce your risk. However they can be swayed and distracted. They cannot also tell if a familiar face is about to commit a crime. This is another reason why you need security system installed around you home. My personal computer has a safe password: One item that carries a lot of our personal information is our personal computer and smart phone. A long and complex password is good but cannot protect you from a determined hacker with one of the advance cracking software. Therefore beside a password, it is important you have an anti-virus installed in you device for surer protection. I can’t trust the police to protect me. Most Nigerians can relate with this statement. With extortions, harassment and other vices carried out by some members of the police one will want to believe that that statement is true. However for every criminal police officer there are many genuine ones. So having a police emergency number is an important collection, better still you can allow Guardian Angel do that for you when you want to reach the police in time of emergency. Simply download our mobile app from you app store for free, and trust that we will always be there when you need us. Live beyond these misconceptions and take your security personal. Stay safe. |
The security situation in Nigeria is really bad; I think every Nigerian would agree. All you need to do is read the crime section of most news papers, or hangout at a nearby joint and listen to gist; you would be almost too afraid to go outside in the evening. Let’s not even talk about North-Eastern Nigeria, or the Niger-Delta creeks, or various communities that have been attacked by Fulani herdsmen. The worst horror movies you’ve ever seen have played-out in those regions. I give a big and humble salute to men of our armed forces and security agencies who are sacrificing everyday to minimize these occurrences. But as we have often heard, “Security is everybody’s business”, and a security failure may cost us more than we can ever replace; thus the issue of security is not something we can comfortably leave to others to handle, especially in the Nigerian context. So how much do we Nigerians really do to mitigate our vulnerability to security risks? Not much surprisingly, especially given the limitations and short comings of our security agencies. Not that we should live in fear or anything like that, but is quite surprising that we in Nigeria do not do as much to ensure our personal security as even residents of countries who have more efficient security structures. I’ve wondered about this, given it some thought, asked some questions, and arrived at the following reasons. Please feel free to disagree, buttress, contribute, or even fight with me on these points. 1. Religion. I realized that religion is the number one reason for our failure in taking our personal security seriously enough. Our approach to religion in Nigeria has made us lax in a lot of areas, security not being the least of them. It is either we believe that God will supernaturally protect us from all evil, or we believe that whatever happens to us, whether good or bad, is God’s will. I am not here to argue religion, but I just have this to say; if you don’t go to work or your place of business for the next 6 months, will God protect you from the effect of that on your finances, or will you say that that is God’s will for you? Apply the same answer to your personal security. So next time you say, “It is not my portion!” or “It is God’s will”, ask yourself, “really?” 2. Reactive nature. In Nigeria, we tend to be more reactive than proactive, especially. This grim fact was made shockingly clear to me when I decided to do a survey of people who have phone numbers to call in case of emergency, and people who have a definite plan of what to do in the event of various emergencies. A shocking 60% of people surveyed do not have either, despite some of them knowing people it has happened to. And out of the 40% who do, 30% of them have been previous victims. So majority of those who have a plan of action for various emergencies have learnt from their own bitter experience. Are you waiting to learn from yours? 3. Tendency to blame others. We blame the government, security agencies, the society, our neighbours, our friends, “the old woman in the village”, the devil…. the list goes on, anybody but our selves. Yes you cannot do it all, but by asking yourself, “What could go wrong, and what can I do to prevent it?” You can save yourself a lot of heart ache. 4. Procrastination. A lot of times, when I visit a friend and see a faulty lock or any other security lapse, and I point it out, I would often hear, “I know, I’ve been meaning to fix that”. And I would respond, “ok, just make sure you advice the thieves not to come until you get around to it”. That often passes the message. If you know what to do to improve your security, and you can do it, do it now. Even the bible likens the unexpected second coming of Jesus like the coming of a thief, you never know when it will be. 5. Focusing more on immediate needs. Yes, we can blame the economic situation in the country for this, but we often put-off adopting certain security measures while we focus on “more pressing needs”. We all have our scale of preferences and our own way of prioritizing our needs, and of course there is so much we can afford. But if we attach enough importance to it, there are always certain levels of security measures that would fall within our budget. Let us keep asking the question, “what could go wrong and what can I do to prevent it?” It is not negative thinking, it is being responsible. Together we can achieve a safer, more secure society. Stay safe. |
Everyone has the right to safety and life devoid of fear of unwanted variables. Personal security and safety is a lifestyle, call it a culture, but the problem is,not too many people know this, for some, they know, while for others, they just don’t have any idea what we’re talking about. Which side are you on? Personal Security and Safety is the overall measure adopted to detect any threat to our existence. A general condition you put in place to avert, evade or check possible danger/s before they occur. Personal security and safety is a state of consciousness. 5 Effective Steps to Personal Security and Safety. There is no limit to personal security and safety, no measure is too big or small, they are all geared towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle and an optimal security alertness level in your community or office. PSS is a rule and must be adhered to. A quick check of the effective steps we considered to be key to your personal security and safety. 1. LOCK THE DOORS & WINDOWS. Never forgot that no matter what. It is basic, your home/office should be locked when you’re not around. I know someone who has the habit of coming back after the doors and windows had been locked just to confirm that everywhere was locked properly. Be like this person. 2. BE CONSCIOUS OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT. Vigilance shouldn’t be left for your local vigilante group, it starts with you. It is only fair that you understand your environment, know the faces of people that come in and out of your community, as difficult as it may sound, you can involuntarily know just by paying attention. Inform your significant others of your movement and its itinerary. Now here’s a quick one –don’t get distracted by earphones, text messages and phone calls especially when you’re walking alone in the night. You don’t want to be caught off guard, do you?Make casual eye contact with people when walking, it keeps your sharpness alive. Walk with confidence, it shows that you’re in control of your environment. Body language matters whole lot. Don’t walk with your hands in your pockets. If you’re scared of going alone at night, let someone accompany you. 3. DON’T BE OSTENTIOUS. Why shoot yourself in the leg, when you can do better. Don’t front your money, jewelries, phones and other valuables while in the public just to show off, the consequences are enormous and it can make you an easy target. Always keep your transport fare ready when boarding a bus rather than opening your wallet publicly. 4. BE FRIENDS WITH YOUR MIND. The mind is a powerful tool, make out time to listen to it. Trust your instinct, if something or someone makes you uncomfortable just ‘’get out ‘’ of there. Be careful of the strangers you respond to. 5. ALWAYS HAVE EMERGENCY NUMBERS/CONTACTS. Always know how to get help in the event of an emergency, security or medical. Don't wait till the situation develops before you think of who to contact and how. Effective steps to personal security and safety are endless, it begins with you, however, hope we did our best to bring you up to speed? Feel free to drop a comment in the comment section. |

Low quality seed, scarce irrigation services, lack of storage facilities and the ever-greedy middle men are other problems that the FG need to tackle if agriculture is to take a central position in country’s economy. These are the same problems of agriculture we read about and wrote to pass agricultural science exams in secondary school in the early nineties. If they are still the problems of agriculture today then we need to ask, "are we moving forward, or backwards,or marking time in one place?" |
