PART 2 OF MY TEACHING STORY

I submitted my application to many schools but 3 called me, I went for 2. Fortunately for dat school they conducted all d stages d same day. The theory, oral n micro teaching. I was asked to teach percentage during d micro teaching n God saw me tru. I was taken among 23 teachers dat came. I was offered as much as 18k n I gladly accepted.
After one year we wrote an internal exam n I scored 89percent n was promoted to teach basic 6. With 2k increment in my salary. Tanx to d ppl in dis thread cos they opened my eyes to see dat am being used. I have written 5 books n published 3 with childrens bk n novel inclusive but neva saw it as somfin dat can giv me edge ova odas until Goldendr said it.
Am very gud in maths n English so far I hv gotten one invite. But my fellow teachers my boss is very gud to me das why I find it difficult to live him. But I hv made up my mind. How will I handle him plss cos he neva wanted me to liv hence he's gud to me nt in terms of mony ooo
Babe, forget niceness oooo. If you want to really add value to your life its better you leave when u have the means to. Explain to your boss, if he/she is really nice like you said, then he should understand that you have to expand your coast. Besides the books and novels you have written can become part of scheme of work tomorrow, you can never tell but you can find out if you step out. All d best!!!

Thanks a bunch Bettydee. I'll visit the mentioned schools on Monday and ofcourse I do submit my credentials alongside. Please do you have an idea of their salary range? Do you know anything about Binta, Classic, Effortswill and Ronik? Thanks
Binta- super story school (35-45k), Classic (advanced kereje 25-28k), Effortswill ( top notch 45k and above), Ronik (not bad 35k and above).
The ones I mentioned depends on your power of negotiations and what you have inside you.... you can earn 50k in a place others are earning 23k. Goodluck to you!!!

I just want to give a tip to anybody going to schools to submit their CVs. Don't jst submit ur CV alone, submit together with an application letter and credentials most especially your cert. I submitted just my cv at some schools in warri and also submitted cv with my cert and application letter. Well guess what? I've gotten calls for interview at 3 schools already but I haven't gotten any call from schools I dropped just my cv only. It's no guarantee but, it goes a long way in helping you get an interview.
On point dude! I had to disregard most applications cos it was either application letter or CV alone, it makes the applicant seem unserious. If possible, include every certificate you ever had, you don't know where that big break may come from.

Uglychic's Opening Keynote session was introduced by herself who emphasized that students need to walk into school and feel like they are taking a “step towards the future, and not a step back in time”. This sentiment rank true in the constant challenge we have as instructional technologists to bridge the distance between digital immigrants and digital natives. Uglychic mentioned notable strides and achievements including that at Uglychic High School in Kereje. The school is a prime example of the success of community partnership.

Another notable point is that the National Educational Conference which enhances teaching skills and methods.

Her keynote focused on the question of “meaningful learning environments” and what it takes to create them. He proposed 3 preconditions for it to happen and related them to, of all subjects, Here are a few notes from his keynote address:

Effort is essential for meaningful learning…

“We telescope how long that learning takes place”…”underestimate how much time, energy, and struggle” is behind a successful organization, classroom, individua.l

There is a 10 year rule for success and proficiency proposed by psychologists…10,000 hours of practice necessary…which comes to 4 hours a day for all successful individuals

Effort…successful learning doesn’t begin with a talent, but with an approach to the task

Example: Nigerian students-will say you have to have a “talent” for math to be good for it. Asian counterparts-to do well at math takes effort.

Perseverance is essential…you must “build on your failures”…

We tend to embrace the capitalization learning style: where people build on their strengths until you reach an optimal state

But this is not the only kind of strategy. We need to try the compensation strategy. Instead of building on your strengths, you compensate on your weaknesses. When you find success from the compensation strategy, the results are much more meaningful and weighted.

Example: In NFL Football, the top 50 draft pics underperform compared to the 51+ draft picks.

“We need to have respect for difficulty.”

So the big question is…”How do we set up an environment where students are enabled to “flex” their compensation muscles?

Feedback is a critical aid to effective learning… so also it is to this thread.

We incorrectly think our learning/experience has to be linear. “We value and treasure the role of timely and targeted feedback as an aid to effective learning”

Feedback lies at the core of effective learning. We must take time to not only solicit feedback, but evaluate the results to see how we can improve.

Two preconditions for effective learning are
(1) interesting, real challenges, and
(2) a belief that this learning is urgent and important. Without them, there is no curiosity, no engagement, real attention or motivation to learn.

Summarizing point:

“Sometimes the struggle in learning something is where the learning lies.”

1. Effort-

Develop a professional development plan and stick with implementation for several years. Results may not be apparent until later.

Increasing teacher effort in attending professional development-Work with administration on paid time, substitutes, professionl recertification points, etc. Work with community partners to provide snacks, freebies, assistance, etc.

2. Perseverence

How do you keep teachers from quitting on implementing a technology tool if it “fails” the first time? I see this problem often. I never feel technology fails. Most of the time, any snags in implementing the technology tool was because of lack of planning and lack of understanding the tool.

I’m stuck here…please offer suggestions!

3. Feedback

Provide a “feedback/closure” session with teachers after a collaborative project; solicit feedback from students on what was learned and what could have been improved; develop improvement plans from feedback

Does anyone have any concrete suggestions on “how” to set up these preconditions in a school/classroom to create an effective and meaningful learning environment for teachers (professional development) and students? I’d love to hear your responses!
These are wonderful points I must say.....On the area of perseverance, following the example of using a new tool/technology. when something like that is introduced, get an expert to train the staff or send any of d staff on a seminar/workshop as regards the new tool, then make it a part of their teaching procedure, with that they become perfect in its use(because they have to use it on a daily basis). It becomes intresting to them(teachers) and they are able to guide the students smoothly through it.

My first interview was at Ogun, I goofed seriously. I did not divide the board into two, no date, no topic and to top it I was not talking to my students (interviewers). They told me they way I was teaching I could only teach University undergraduates.
After, the interview I was not selected as usual "we would get back to you" was the words the panel used.

Second interview, Kai! That when I knew unemployement is real and my 180k for a start disappeared. See crowd. Simple questions but the major thing they were looking at was those that could prepare lessons note which one of the invigilator told us............ I messed up. I no bother go back to the school, as I reach house na im I carry my mama lesson note begin dey study as if na final year exams I wan write.

Third interview, I knew I was going to kill them, I passed the test, lesson note but goofed again at micro teaching, why? I was not vast with the topic I selected (respiration) but this time I was confident, ruled the board, wrote the date and topic, but did not make the list.

Fourth interview, I prepared well, corrected all my mistakes. Interview started with waec past questions, I did not prepare for it at all, dem no call me- meaning I failed.

Note:I did not give up, I fell, I dusted myself up and tried again and in the process learnt and after each interview, I went back to look at my mistakes

Finally, I was coming from one of those frustrating interviews where they would drill you like say them wan pay you 1m, with two different panels. I just decided to log on to Nairaland and saw one advert and I applied by calling the number. I was asked to come to the school immediately. Right there and there I was given a micro teaching, na vexation I use finish the topic with confidence, this time mistakes made were corrected. The interviewer was shocked and was amazed that I did not teach while serving, how come I was able to perform exceptionally well? Says the interviewer, I answered, "I try to be the best in anything I want to do". He stared at me, looked at my resume and ask, if I can write a lesson plan, I replied, no sir. He fired another question in my discipline, I just laugh for my mind, the same question they asked in the just concluded waec examination, I aced it. As usual, the question applicants do not like came up.
Interviewer: How much do you intend to earn?
Me: sir, let me think. Am I working at present? No, do I need the job yes, why? I do not have any work experience and am tired of staying at home. All of these were questions running in my head. He told me, they were offering 30k........ I grabbed it with both hands.
After a year, I was at Ipaja with accomodation 50k. I got another offer at Owode!!!! I picked the former. Less I forget, lesson dey involve o, I take home say between 75-80, just 8.00pm-4.00pm with accommodation, no traffic, not like that my Banker friend that does 5.00am-10.00pm. There is money in teaching, especially if you know your onions well.

One day, a teacher asked his student “What are you going to do with your life?” The student was stunned for he loved this teacher and admired him. He had never felt such pressure from his teacher before. Stammering, this man replied, “I don’t know. Finish my studies and get a good job, I suppose"
“Get a good job,” his teacher repeated. “This is a phrase I have often heard. It is the single worst choice of your generation. Happiness is unlikely to come to the mind whose goal is to ‘get a good job.’” “Son,” this wise teacher asked, “Would you be interested in some specific advice from an old man who wished he had your youth and energy?”
“Of course, Doctor.”
“Look around you. Take a fresh, hard, and uncompromising look at life as you see it. Ask this question, ‘What needs to be done?’ When you have an answer, and it may take some time to get it, then go and do what needs to be done. Do it better than anyone else does it and the world will beat down your door for your help. Then you will not need ‘a good job’; and you will have more than a career.
You will have a mission.”

Many times, we focus on "getting a good job" and then when we get that job, we get disillusioned and want something "better".. Take the advise of this wise teacher (who, by the way, was the famous inventor, Buckminster Fuller) and really, "jobs" will come looking for you! But take heed... we need to all find the balance between AMBITION and CONTENTMENT

Xtfield, Manie and bettydee- would soon open her school. Tenderlyme, you can, should would, will, shall and definitely make it. Don't let failure deter you.

Wish everyone the very best...
lol, Amen to that madam artisticallyart. Really, we should always think about impactation and not just how much we could earn(though more goes with it also). when you find that need that is to be filled and you fill it with all that is in you, the world will be at your finger tips.

Please pardon my naivety, but want to know if there is any Secondary school in naija that pays entry level graduate to the tune of 90k upwards.?

Any idea about the entry level salaries of some of this schools: Corona schools, Chris land schools, Loyola Jesuit, DAY WATERMAN college and other schools in their class, especially those schools that was listed as top 100 schools in Nigeria by an active poster on this thread?

It is with disgust I write this to all members of this exceptionally great thread.

The only motivation we get from posting job advert on this thread is by reading your feedback which in turn helps other to make informed decision, but for the past 15 pages we have not had any feedback, imagine if we did not have feedback, how would you know what questions would be asked and how to prepare for the interview?

I am well aware that some of us used this as a spring board to better jobs but that is not enough not to post or contribute to the growth of this thread. The thread would outlive some of us.
Shout out to the Great Golden Dr., Corkqueen, Givemejoy, Ofumaria, Pastordoalone, Choirmistress, LaurelP, Odunharry, Upload, avicky, Manie, xtfield, Islamics, Kendraloops, VickyHills, Queenex, Chrisdenil01, Oluemmakay(a great beneficiary of this thread), visiting Professor, Larry37, Glocee, Makazona, funminicrown, 2str8, Marvelito, CaptainDo(a beneficiary too) coolhamid, bettydee, Sunnypar and IDrock(Deputy Op).

Please for those always requesting for vacancies in specific location, "we" always advice you go to schools within and around your locality to submit your resume.
Meanwhile, the get-together is taking place soon... Do not miss out on this wonderful opportunity.

To add to what my ogas at the top has said about CVs, a good teacher's cv must also be up-to-date,it shows that you didn't allow your brain to go to sleep at any point in time. It must also be brief but elaborate.i.e am not saying your cv should be up to 5pages and more,it should be kept short but also explanatory so that your employer would grab all is needed to know at a single glance.

Also, please and please, do not in any way use coloured paper for your cv,I have seen it before and its so annoying, what are you trying to tell your employer? Like Givemejoy will say,"my 2k".
