Effective military operations depend not only on combat capability but also on seamless coordination, sound judgement and the protection of civilians. In this regard, the Air Warfare and Doctrine Centre (AWDC), Abuja, conducted an in-theatre Air-to-Ground Integration (AGI) and Civilian Harm Mitigation (CHM) training for troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA at the Nigerian Air Force Base, Katsina, from 19 to 23 October 2026. The training brought together 51 personnel, comprising 20 Nigerian Army and 31 Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel, to strengthen joint operational effectiveness and promote responsible employment of airpower.

Through classroom presentations, interactive discussions and practical demonstrations, participants explored air-ground coordination procedures, air support limitations, targeting processes, coordinate systems, location marking and emergency close air support. The CHM component addressed civilian harm risk factors in the North-West operational environment, legal and ethical considerations, and measures to incorporate civilian protection into operational planning and execution. Speaking on the training, the Commandant of AWDC, Air Vice Marshal GI Jibia, emphasised the importance of effective coordination between air assets and surface forces, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to practical, lessons-driven training. The Joint Task Force Air Component Commander, Air Commodore CE Illoh, also commended the initiative and urged participants to apply the knowledge acquired in subsequent operations.

The training forms part of the NAF’s lessons-learnt initiatives to translate operational experience into improved professional competence, stronger coordination and better-informed targeting decisions. In line with the Command Philosophy of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is strengthening its M-346 maintenance capability through specialised training in Italy. The programme, which commenced on 13 July 2026, involves 13 personnel comprising 4 officers and 9 airmen and airwomen, receiving training in airframe, propulsion and engine run procedures.

The training progressed from theoretical instruction in Turin, focusing on airframe and propulsion systems, to practical sessions at the M-346 production facility in Venegono, Varese. The practical phase was successfully completed on 25 September 2026, equipping participants with hands-on aircraft maintenance skills. The final phase, covering engine run procedures, involves 2 officers and 4 airmen and airwomen, with completion scheduled for 25 October 2026.

The Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has intensified counter-terrorism operations in Borno State, neutralising six Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP)/Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) terrorists, arresting 11 suspected terrorist collaborators and recording the defection of a JAS member. These successes underscore the sustained operational pressure being exerted on terrorist groups and their support networks across the theatre.

At about 12:37 am on 25 October 2026, troops of 29 Task Force Brigade Garrison, in conjunction with Hybrid Force personnel, conducted an ambush against ISWAP/JAS terrorists along the Targejeri axis of Kaga Local Government Area (LGA), Borno State. The encounter resulted in the neutralisation of six terrorists. Recovered items included one AK-47 rifle, three magazines and 169 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. Other items recovered were two Android phones, three button phones and charms.

In a related development, troops conducted a follow-up raid in Benisheikh town, Kaga LGA, at about 6:20 am on 24 October 2026, following earlier operations against suspected terrorist collaborators. The raid resulted in the arrest of six additional suspected collaborators, bringing the total number of suspects apprehended in connection with the investigation to eleven, including the five arrested earlier.

Items recovered during the raid included one AK-47 rifle, three empty magazines, 169 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, three terrorist uniforms, one turban, one head mask, two Android phones, three button phones and charms. The suspects are undergoing investigation to establish the extent of their involvement in terrorist activities and identify possible links to other members of the network.

Similarly, at about 9:20 pm on 24 October 2026, troops of 192 Battalion (Main), supported by Hybrid Force personnel deployed at Hambagda Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Gwoza LGA, received one JAS member who surrendered around Hambagda village along the Gwoza–Limankara road.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the individual had escaped from a terrorist enclave in the Gwoza area of the Mandara Mountains to abandon terrorism. He surrendered with one AK-47 rifle and one magazine containing 28 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, among other items. The individual is currently in custody and undergoing further investigation and processing in accordance with established procedures.

The latest successes demonstrate the sustained offensive posture, combat readiness and effective coordination of OPHK troops and Hybrid Force personnel in degrading terrorist capabilities, disrupting support networks and encouraging defections from terrorist groups. The recovery of weapons and ammunition, coupled with the arrest of suspected collaborators, further reinforces the Theatre Command’s determination to deny terrorists the resources and support required to sustain their activities.

The Theatre Command reiterates its commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations across the theatre, denying terrorists freedom of action and creating conditions for the safe return of displaced communities and the restoration of socio-economic activities. Members of the public are urged to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies in support of ongoing efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in the North East.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commenced the deployment of 600 Nigerian Army personnel to India for specialised jungle and mountain warfare training aimed at enhancing troops’ combat proficiency in difficult terrains and strengthening the Army’s capacity to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

The first batch of 300 personnel departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday, 22 October 2026, aboard two Indian Air Force aircraft, a C-17 and an Airbus A321.

The Coordinator, Nigerian Military Training Support and Advisory Team, Army Headquarters Department of Army Training, Major General UG Yusuf, who represented the COAS, witnessed the departure alongside the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria.

The training underscores the COAS’s commitment to building a professional, adaptable and combat-ready force capable of confronting terrorists, insurgents and other criminal elements operating in forests, mountainous areas and other challenging environments. It also aligns with his Command Philosophy, which prioritises operational effectiveness, realistic training, personnel development and enhanced combat readiness.

The specialised programme is expected to equip personnel with advanced jungle and mountain warfare skills, improve operational manoeuvrability and strengthen their capacity to deny criminal elements safe havens in difficult terrains. It will further reinforces Nigeria–India defence cooperation and the COAS’s determination to sustain a resilient, mission-ready Army capable of defending the nation’s sovereignty and protecting lives and property.

The Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has sustained intelligence-led precision air strikes against Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists across the Joint Operations Area, neutralising a total of 103 terrorists and destroying several logistics hubs and storage facilities between 10 and 18 October 2026. [/b]The successes were recorded through the coordinated employment of Nigerian Army Aviation, the Nigerian Army Remotely Piloted Aircraft (NARPAS) Regiment and Air Component assets, reinforcing the military’s resolve to dismantle terrorist networks and deny them freedom of action[b]

The sustained air campaign comprised seven strikes against terrorist targets around Gudumbali in Guzamala Local Government Area (LGA) on 10 October, Badu in Monguno LGA on 11 October, Mairari in Guzamala LGA and an area east of Badu on 13 October, Duste Uku in Gombi LGA of Adamawa State on 16 October, and the alternate residence of Abu Saleem, the ISWAP Wali of South Lake Chad, in the Arina Woje area of Monguno LGA, Borno State, on 18 October 2026. These operations reflect sustained operational pressure on terrorist concentrations, leadership structures and logistics networks across the theatre.

A significant success was recorded on 18 October 2026 when the Air Component conducted a precision strike against Abu Saleem’s alternate residence following intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance activities. Subsequent human intelligence (HUMINT) confirmed the neutralisation of Jindullah, a prominent ISWAP fighter reportedly serving as Abu Saleem’s chief security guard. The intelligence also confirmed the neutralisation of Abul Kissa, a member of the group’s Shura Council, alongside other prominent fighters within the targeted premises.

The strike completely destroyed the targeted structure and key logistics assets, including nine boat engines and several motorcycles stored within the premises. It also disrupted terrorist concealment arrangements within the forested area, further undermining the group’s ability to use the location as a safe haven for its activities.

Earlier, on 13 October 2026, the Guardian air asset tracked a group of 16 terrorists from the Mairari axis to a gathering of more than 100 terrorists accompanied by several motorcycles, approximately 23 kilometres east of Badu and 19 kilometres west of Monguno LGA. A subsequent precision strike on the gathering resulted in the assessed neutralisation of approximately 30 terrorists, while the extent of damage to the motorcycles remained unconfirmed.

The other strikes during the period targeted terrorist elements and facilities around Gudumbali, Badu, Mairari and Duste Uku. Collectively, the seven strikes resulted in the reported neutralisation of 103 terrorists and the destruction of several logistics hubs and storage facilities, significantly disrupting the group’s operational capabilities and capacity to sustain its activities.

The sustained successes underscore the effectiveness of coordinated, intelligence-led air operations in degrading terrorist capabilities, disrupting command structures and dismantling critical logistics networks. Through continued synergy among Nigerian Army Aviation, NARPARS, the Air Component and ground forces, OPHK remains resolute in maintaining operational momentum, denying terrorists safe havens and advancing efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the North East.

[/b]COAS REAFFIRMS CRITICAL ROLE OF ARTILLERY FIREPOWER IN ENHANCING OPERATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS[b]

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the critical role of artillery firepower as a force multiplier in enhancing the operational effectiveness and combat readiness of the Nigerian Army. He stated this during the firepower demonstration of the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery (NACA) Vulcan Training Period 2026, Exercise VULCAN GLOW XII, held at the Ground Stand, Nigerian Army Training Area, Kachia, Kaduna on Friday, 16 October 2026.

Represented by the Commander, Training and Doctrine Command, Nigerian Army (TRADOC NA), Major General Peter Malla, the COAS noted that effective artillery support, accurate fire delivery and seamless integration with manoeuvre arms were essential to strengthening combat capabilities and sustaining battlefield dominance. He explained that the exercise provided an opportunity to assess the proficiency of artillery personnel, the effectiveness of weapon systems and the responsiveness of fire support in contemporary military operations.

The COAS further stated that the exercise was designed to identify capability gaps, refine training methodologies and guide decisions on the deployment and employment of artillery assets. He emphasised that operational readiness, a key pillar of his command philosophy, could only be sustained through continuous mission-oriented training, doctrinal innovation and the development of a combat-ready, mission-capable and adaptable force.

He added that contemporary asymmetric threats, particularly in difficult and inaccessible terrain, demanded rapid response, accurate fire delivery and sustained operational capabilities. He therefore stressed the importance of maintaining the reliability, serviceability and operational effectiveness of artillery weapon systems to ensure successful mission accomplishment.

The COAS expressed confidence that the exercise would enhance personnel proficiency, strengthen fire support coordination, address operational deficiencies and improve the overall readiness of artillery units. He urged commanders, instructors and participating personnel to translate lessons learnt from the demonstration into practical improvements in artillery training and employment.

He also reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s loyalty to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He appreciated the President’s strategic guidance and continued support for the Nigerian Army while commending the Commander, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Major General John Adeyemo, the Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Artillery, and other personnel for their commitment to the successful conduct of the exercise.

Earlier, the Commander, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Major General John Adeyemo, described the firepower demonstration as the major activity of the Corps’ annual gunnery training period. He explained that the exercise was designed to optimise the Corps’ capacity and capability for decisive joint fire support in joint and multi-domain operations.

According to him, the exercise was structured to practise the Nigerian Army’s super camp concept and establish an integrated fire support cell involving relevant formations and units. He added that the training provided an opportunity to assess the performance of participating formations, identify areas requiring improvement and generate lessons to strengthen the Corps’ operational capabilities.

Major General Adeyemo expressed appreciation to the COAS, the Commander, TRADOC NA, senior officers at Defence and Army Headquarters and other stakeholders for their continued support towards the professional development of the Corps. The firepower demonstration featured practical displays of artillery capabilities, marking the culmination of the NACA Vulcan Training Period 2026. The event also featured free medical services for members of the host community as part of the Corps’ commitment to strengthening civil-military relations and promoting community wellbeing.

The successful conduct of Exercise VULCAN GLOW XII underscores the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery’s commitment to continuous training, operational readiness and the delivery of effective fire support in furtherance of the Nigerian Army’s operational objectives.
