The President and Commander-in-Chief Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has lauded the Nigerian Army as a formidable force whose legacy of courage and professionalism, continues to shape peace, stability and security across Nigeria, Africa and the global stage. The President gave this commendation on Monday 6 July 2026, at the Grand Finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026, held at Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Represented by the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, he described the Nigerian Army as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s security architecture and a respected contributor to international peace support operations.

President Tinubu noted that from its early engagements in global conflicts to its leadership in regional interventions and United Nations peacekeeping missions, the Nigerian Army has consistently demonstrated resilience, discipline and operational excellence. He affirmed that these contributions have not only safeguarded Nigeria’s sovereignty but also reinforced peace and stability across Africa and beyond.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Army, the President pledged sustained support for its modernisation drive, enhanced troop welfare and the acquisition of advanced capabilities to address evolving security threats. He also commended the successful hosting of the African Land Forces Forum, describing it as a strategic platform that deepens international military cooperation, fosters innovation and strengthens collective responses to emerging security challenges.

Reflecting on the theme of NADCEL 2026, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” President Tinubu said it captures the enduring bond of trust between the Nigerian Army and the citizens it serves. He paid tribute to fallen heroes whose sacrifices have preserved the nation’s unity and assured that their families would continue to receive government support. He further applauded ongoing efforts in indigenous defence production, intelligence sharing and the integration of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence, to enhance operational effectiveness.

In his remarks, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, commended the Nigerian Army for its steadfast role in maintaining peace and security in Rivers State and the Niger Delta region. He acknowledged with glowing tribute the contributions of the Nigerian Army to protecting critical national assets, sustaining law and order and creating an enabling environment for economic growth. The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s continued support for the Nigerian Army, noting that collaboration with 6 Division has remained vital in addressing security challenges and preserving stability in the Niger Delta Region.

Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, emphasised that the Nigerian Army’s responsibility extends beyond battlefield victories to sustaining peace, defending national interests and securing the future of the nation. He noted that the Army has remained resolute in adapting to evolving threats through professionalism, resilience and patriotism.

The COAS reiterated that the Nigerian Army would continue to pursue a robust modernisation agenda focused on enhanced capabilities, renewal of equipment, infrastructure development and the induction of advanced operational platforms in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda. He stressed that addressing contemporary security challenges requires a whole-of-society approach, driven by strong collaboration among the military, government institutions, international partners and citizens.

The grand finale for the NADCEL 2026 featured a colourful military parade, tactical demonstrations and equipment display alongside the presentation of the COAS Commendation Awards to outstanding personnel. A Research and Development Exhibition, highlighting the Nigerian Army’s growing strides in indigenous innovation and technological. advancement, reinforcing its readiness to meet present and future security demands.

The event was attended by former Presidents, including General Yakubu Gowon, General Olusegun Obasanjo, Chiefs of Army Staff from 17 African countries, Special Adviser to the president of Liberia, members of the national and state house of assembly as well as former Chiefs of Defence Staff and former Chiefs Army Staff among others.

You still haven't mentioned what the chiefs aren't doing or are doing wrong compared to former service chiefs.
NAF has sustained intelligence driven airstrikes infact this CAS has more record of precision driven strikes and he keeps building on that capability majorly in terms of training.
The Army Aviation and UAV has been very active in recent times since beginning of the year.
The COAS has been pushing for funds to improve early warning systems in the NE to be able to thwart ISWAP attacks and there was been improvement as regards that.
So tell me exactly what they aren't doing correctly.
If you're blaming the chiefs blame the troops as well.

I already gave an explanation. Firstly the incident happened in a area where no solid/visit security presence apart from local vigilante. Now it already happened first set of rescuers that pursued the terrorists ran into IED two vigilante were killed. They threatened to kill the Hostages if force is used, I believe you've come across several case study 2024 UK SBS raid in sokoto amongst others. We tried negotiations for the safe release but it stalled. Now two weeks ago ONSA is coordinating kinetic means of rescuing them I have video of them in the forest I can share personally with you

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), through the Air Warfare and Doctrine Centre (AWDC), has reinforced its commitment to strengthening joint operational effectiveness by conducting an in-theatre Air-to-Ground Integration (AGI) and Civilian Harm Mitigation (CHM) orientation training for personnel of Operation Savannah Shield. Held from 22–26 June 2026, the programme brought together personnel drawn from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and the NAF. The specialised training was designed to deepen participants' understanding of joint force employment, enhance air-ground coordination and improve mission planning and execution within contemporary operational environments.

The comprehensive programme combined classroom instruction, interactive engagements and practical demonstrations to enhance participants' operational competence. Training focused on key air-to-ground integration procedures, joint planning, mission coordination and contemporary operational practices, alongside legal, ethical and practical measures for mitigating civilian harm during military operations. An abridged Air Liaison Officers' course was also conducted for NAF pilots and Regiment officers at NAF Base Kainji, broadening their understanding of joint air operations, operational planning, air mobility coordination and inter-service collaboration. These engagements further strengthened participants' appreciation of integrated battlefield operations and the importance of precision, professionalism and effective teamwork in modern military missions.

Speaking during the programme, the Commandant, Air Warfare and Doctrine Centre, Air Vice Marshal Garba Jibia, underscored the growing importance of integrated operations in addressing evolving security challenges, noting that effective coordination, rapid decision-making and seamless cooperation between air and ground forces are essential to mission success. Echoing the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke's assertion that "Decisive air power delivers its greatest effect when seamlessly integrated with surface operations," he explained that the training was carefully designed to enhance professionalism and mission readiness in line with the Chief of the Air Staff's command philosophy. Participants described the programme as insightful, practical and professionally rewarding, noting that the knowledge gained would strengthen future operational planning and mission coordination. The successful training further underscores the Nigerian Air Force's commitment to building an integrated, mission-ready joint force capable of delivering precise air power effects while safeguarding civilian lives, thereby enhancing operational effectiveness and national security.

[/b]TROOPS OF OPERATION FANSAN YAMMA DEAL HEAVY BLOW TO TERRORISTS, RESCUE ABDUCTEES IN SOKOTO AND KATSINA STATES[b]

Troops OF Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA in a sustained effort to rid the North West region of terrorism and banditry have recorded another significant operational successes. Through a series of coordinated offensive operations across Sokoto and Katsina States, the gallant troops neutralised armed terrorists, foiled a terrorist attack and thwarted a kidnapping attempt and recovered large cache of arms and rustled livestock.

The first of these decisive encounters occurred on 21 June 2026, when armed terrorists attempted to infiltrate Tureta town in Sokoto State. Responding swiftly to actionable intelligence, the vigilant troops engaged the criminals, forcing them to abandon their sinister mission and flee.

Following this initial encounter, aerial surveillance tracked the fleeing terrorists to Sulubawa Gidan Kare village, where they were observed moving with abducted civilians and rustled livestock. Acting promptly, the troops launched a hot pursuit. Despite encountering a hastily mounted ambush by the retreating terrorists, the troops displayed exceptional courage and superior firepower, fighting through the ambush and compelling the criminals to scatter. This valiant effort led to the successful rescue of the abductees, the recovery of the rustled cattle and the seizure of 2 motorcycles used by the terrorists.

In a related development during the early hours of 22 June 2026, troops executed an intelligence-driven dawn raid on a known terrorist enclave in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The surprise assault completely overwhelmed the terrorists. During the ensuing firefight, 2 terrorists were neutralised, while several others fled the scene with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.

A thorough exploitation of the hideout yielded significant recoveries, including One PKT assault rifle, one AK 47 rifle with a quantity of ammunition, 3 motorcycles, mobile communication devices, rustled livestock, and other logistical items used to facilitate their criminal enterprises.

These recent victories underscore the unwavering determination, professionalism, and resilience of the troops of JTF NW Operation FANSAN YAMMA in taking the fight directly to the enclaves of terrorist and criminal elements. We assure the public that aggressive operations will be sustained to dismantle all terrorist networks, deny them freedom of action and restore lasting peace and security across the North West region.
