NAF UAV, NOT HELICOPTER, CRASHED IN KADUNA

Contrary to reports on social media as well as on a handful of traditional media outlets that a NAF helicopter had crashed in Kaduna earlier today, 1 July 2024, be informed that no helicopter crash occurred. Instead, a NAF Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) experienced a mishap after take-off for a mission, at a location near Rumji Village and about 15 Km from Base. Since it is an unmanned vehicle, there were no casualties on board or on ground. Preliminary investigation has since commenced to ascertain what may have caused the mishap. Nigerians can be rest assured that this minor setback will not, in anyway, impinge on all ongoing operations.

It should also be pointed out that the propensity to always rush to press in the name of ‘breaking news’ without a hold of the complete facts should be discouraged in its entirety. While the news of the crash filtered in, some outlets had misinformed Nigerians that a helicopter had crashed without the decency to clarify from the NAF. This attitude should be discouraged as it negates the principle of developmental journalism, balanced reporting and fairness. Members of the media are again advised to always seek clarification from authorized military outlets before rushing to ‘break’ the news.

CAS CHAIRS NAF SAFETY REVIEW BOARD, CALLS FOR APPROPRIATE ACTIONS TO BREAK ACCIDENT CHAIN

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has stated that the actions or inactions of all Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel will help to either propel or break the accident chain sometimes experienced in the course of NAF activities or operations. He also called for the emplacement of appropriate actions to break the accident chain so as to enshrine a good safety culture that transcends all levels in the NAF. He made this known earlier today, 2 July 2024, as he chaired the 2024 NAF Safety Review Board (SRB) meeting held at NAF Headquarters, Abuja. According to the CAS, “As members of the Safety Review Board, it is vital that we thoroughly examine all the safety issues arising from this meeting and come up with objective and innovative ideas that would enhance safety in the NAF. While we all know that safety is a collective responsibility, this Board is primarily accountable for safety administration in the NAF.” While noting that accidents are the results of a sequence of events, beginning with deliberate decisions taken, he also stated that the NAF cannot afford to pay lip service to issues relating to safety and called for determination of all personnel to improve safety in the various areas units.

Speaking on the importance of the meeting, Air Marshal Abubakar stated that the NAF regards safety as one of its core functions and is committed to developing, implementing, and reviewing policies to ensure that all activities are conducted in a safe and conducive environment. He then assured that the NAF will intensify efforts to enhance safety in the NAF as it continues its transformation into, “an agile and resilient force that effectively meets the airpower demands of national security in all operational environments”. The CAS also stated that more interesting and auspicious days lie ahead for the NAF in view of the Government’s commitment to equipping the NAF with modern platforms. The need for a proactive and enhanced safety culture, he continued, is thus critical in ensuring that their usage are maximized.

Earlier, the Chief of Standards and Evaluation, Air Vice Marshal Micheal Onyebashi revealed that the SRB is the apex body of the NAF Safety Management Structure, designed as a biannual meeting that deliberates on major policy, resource allocation and regulatory issues relating to safety. He went on to state that the Board is required to give direction and guidelines that would ensure the entrenchment of a healthy safety culture in the NAF. He then noted that the NAF has since commenced the introduction of safety education at all NAF entry points and training institutions as directed in the last SRB, as well as leveraging the online learning infrastructure at the Air Warfare Centre, Abuja, to sustain an appreciable level of safety education across the NAF. Speaking further, he noted that with the reactivation of NAF platforms as well as the induction of additional platforms, the need for the SRB, commands and units to work assiduously to ensure that safety standards are maintained in all NAF activities is imperative. He then reminded the Board of its responsibility to proffer strategies and ideas that would enable the NAF to experience continuous improvement of safety in all its operations.

While delivering his paper at the meeting titled, ‘Senior Managers’ Role in Organizational Safety Management System’, Dr Iteke Ifeanyichukwu Chukwunonso of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, stated that managing safety entails managing risks and reactively, proactively and predictively controlling risks to an acceptable level. He also noted that safety management should have a business-like approach and be woven into the fabrics of an organization until it becomes a part of their culture. While commending the NAF for its exceptional safety standards, he called on its leadership to continue to retain the responsibility and accountability for safety. Engr Chukwunonso also emphasized the need for NAF leadership to promote open reporting through non-punitive disciplinary policies while encouraging incentives for promoting safety. In closing, Engr Chukwunonso noted that senior management remains the core for safety management in any organization.

AIR FORCE WAR COLLEGE PARTICIPANTS VISIT MOROCCO AND TÜRKIYE

As part of efforts to deepen understanding of global geopolitics and military-industrial dynamics, the Air Force War College (AFWC) recently undertook an international study tour to TĂźrkiye and Morocco. The tour was majorly aimed at equipping the participants with a deeper understanding of the complexities of international politics, security, and the interdependence of modern nation-states. The overarching theme for the tour was "Military Industrial Complex and National Development: Lessons for Nigeria," with a focus on understanding the technological advancements and manufacturing capabilities of the armed forces in these countries. The participants also explored how these 2 nations have leveraged their military-industrial complexes to bolster their national development agendas.

According to the Commandant of the College, Air Vice Marshal Gabriel Kehinde, "The goal of the study tour was to provide our participants with a comprehensive understanding of the linkages between military capabilities, technological innovation, and economic progress. By examining the models adopted by TĂźrkiye and Morocco, we aim to draw valuable lessons that can inform Nigeria's own path towards strengthening its defense industry and fostering sustainable national development." Upon their return to Nigeria, the participants presented their findings in both oral and written forms, highlighting the unique strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) observed in each country. These insights and lessons learnt will then be utilized to guide the Nigerian Air Force's (NAF) strategic planning and decision-making processes, as the Service seeks to optimize its own military-industrial capabilities.

The successful completion of the study tour underscores NAF’s commitment to fostering a highly informed and strategically minded officers’ corps, capable of addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing global security environment.

Nothing is my own..truth is nothing would change on the ground as long as things continue the way it is now..!!

As long as the military don't go killing people any how in the east there won't be a reactionary attack on them or have you quickly forgotten so fast how the killing of the military started in the east...what about boko haram? All by the same foolish act of the military.

Playing the colonial handbook they thought they can force everyone to a stand till by pointing rifles at them but unfortunately those they are pointing rifles at also got their hands on same rifles...the rest is story today..!!!

Simple fact..!!

God help the military to save the country..!!

Killing people any how; where and how ?
You forgot how your eastern people have been Killing their own people say less of countless dead bead decomposing bodies of police personnel or brutal/barbaric Killing of soldiers.

I hope you know how many IDP camps we have scattered all over the country?

I see now you are calling the police...I'm not blaming the army and never will...I was responding to the dude who is asking IPOB to come and see something cos of some new birds the military bought and I simply told him ipob is never the problem of Nigeria and the birds bought won't change anything on the ground..!!

If the army fail to do what they need do to preserve themselves and the country and instead running after ipob what's my own there...!!? grin grin grin

Your problem and pain was that he called "IPOB to come and see" right?

The truth of the matter is they'll have a taste of it if the killing of security personnel continue? And let me enlightening you on some issues on security.

BH/ISWAP & IPOB/ESN/BIAFRA agitation are two defferent entities. The government has been folding there arms and not wanting a military scale intervention in the east.

The problem we have in the SE and NW/NC should be handled by police and civil defence if they where properly trained and equipped, the military shouldn't be in those places in the 1st place.

The government is just trying to avert another civil war, the IPOB/ESN is never too big to be handled by the army.

Like you said it's none of your business and what's your own kiss

Nonsense..what have they been able to do to boko people, fulani terrosit and bandits for over a decade now.?

You people just be talking rubbish...!!
Nothing would still change on the ground..that's a fact you can take to the bank..!!

The most they can do in the east as usual is to attack and burn the market and old people's home, nothing more...!!

Sentiments apart, what have they been able to do with BH/ISWAP ?
The NA/Armed forces has done alot, go ask people leaving in Borno and Yobe state especially. They will tell you what happened in the past and what's happening now and how they can sleep with their two eyes closed.

The just emerging security threat is the banditory, Fulani herbsmen clash & attack on communities and kidnapping in the N.W & N.C.
And also the IPOB thugs, kidnapping, Oil militants and other huligance like the Auto pilot/Unknown Gunmen has they call it. You want us to put the blame on the Army, what about the Nigerian police and the people of the communities living in that area.

First of all, a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the Army for it's Air Corp. I'm truly elated for the force and Nigeria at large.

That said, I have a few questions and reservations:

1. Why the very old BELL UH-1? Why not the BELL 412 that's equally used by the NAF? In my opinion, that would ease training, interoperability, and maintenance

2. Another concern are restrictions the Americans may place on the procured helos? If we fall out with the Americans, you know how they are. So why risk it?

3. Why don't we go for mid sized transport helos like the Mi-17 transport helos that can pack a decent amount of troops for air assaults

For me Also I don't really like the idea of the very old Bell UH-1 with two rotor blades, but the good thing is that we are starting from somewhere and more goodies to come.

Secondly the Russia Mi-35m/MIi-17 would have been the better procurement for the NA aviation, But has it stands now the sanctions on Russia has made it virtually impossible to buy hardwares from them. And I'll say for now we are in good terms with uncle Sam but over reliance on them might cause some future difficulties like weapon restrictions etc.

Thank God for emerging countries like China and Turkey who are developing faster in Air assets. We can always rely on this emerging friends.

NIGERIAN ARMY TAKES DELIVERY OF ITS FIRST SET OF AIRCRAFTS...As Army Aviation becomes a reality

The Nigerian Army (NA) has taken a significant step in enhancing its operational capabilities with the delivery of the first batch of new aircrafts. The berthing of the aircrafts marks a significant milestone in the development of the Nigerian Army Aviation’s capacity to provide air support for ground operations. The aircraft BELL UH-1H (HUEY) helicopters, were formally received by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja in a brief ceremony held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Thursday 20 June, 2024.

Receiving the aircrafts, General Lagbaja, noted that the renewed drive to establish an NA Aviation wing was conceived by the then-former COAS, Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah (rtd), in 2014, with a three-phase ten-year implementation plan.

The COAS extolled former Chiefs of Army Staff, maintaining, that their tenacity and drive, along with the collective efforts of personnel and Nigerian Government’s political will, have been instrumental in realizing the fruition of NA Aviation.

Gen Lagbaja appreciated the various successive administrations for their support in training NA Pilots and Ground Crews as well as putting in place requisite structures. The COAS profoundly expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fulfilling his promise to fund the acquisition of NA platforms and providing all support to actualize the dream.

The BELL UH-1H Helicopters are equipped with advanced sensors and enablers to conduct a range of missions, including reconnaissance, surveillance, rescue, logistics, transportation, and medical evacuation.

The Army Chief also appreciated the forerunners, particularly the sister services and the Nigerian Police Force Aviation wing, for their support and encouragement. He noted that the NA is spurred to serve the nation better with the acquisition of the new platforms and provide Nigerians, an enabling environment for economic prosperity.

In his remarks, the Coordinator, NA Aviation, Brigadier General Musa Alkali, stated that the arrival of the NA Aviation vanguard platforms is a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the operational capabilities of the NA Aviation, in line with the COAS’s Command Philosophy.

Brig Gen Alkali stressed that the acquisition of the platforms is a clear demonstration of the NA’s aviation resolve, which started 40 years ago to continuously improve and adapt in the face of an evolving security landscape, adding that this will boost the NA’s reconnaissance, surveillance, and air mobility capabilities. The Coordinator acknowledged the tireless efforts of those involved in the execution of the NA Aviation plan, as well as the international partners.

Earlier, a Consultant for the Nigerian Army Aviation, Major General Emeka Onwuamaegbu (retired) who is also a trained Helicopter Pilot, lauded the Nigerian Army for sustaining the vision over the years that saw to the actualization of the Nigerian Army aviation.
