A total of 300 troops drawn from the various Units and Formations across the Theatre Command attended the occasion, where, as a rare privilege, troops freely interacted one-on-one with the Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen TY Buratai. At the event, without any restriction, troops were allowed to sincerely bare their minds on issues bothering them either as a group or individually, especially on professional matters like administration, welfare, logistics and general operational situation including progress and challenges. In his remarks, Lt Gen TY Buratai commended the troops for their gallantry and sacrifices and enjoined them to be more robust and unyielding in the fight to end terrorism in the North East Nigeria. He requested them to open up to him in case of any problem or issue that he needs to know and address. He conveyed the appreciation of Mr President, Commander in Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari for their commitment, sacrifices and loyalty to the nation. Instructively, the Chief of Army Staff used the opportunity to remind the troops of the expectationns of Nigerians as to their ability to keep the country safe, which as an Army, - we must be able to meet or surpass. Few of the major highlights of the durbar session include the need for more patriotism, professionalism as well as the need to reappraise, reorganize and re-strategize to boost the operation and defeat the insurgency/terrorism. Additionally, the need for troops to be mindful of fake news and terrorists' propaganda was also highlighted during the durbar. The climax of the occasion was that the troops had dinner with the Chief of Army Staff. They were elated, visibly happy and poured praises to the Chief of Army Staff for the opportunity, and most importantly for his untiring support in providing the required leadership, logistics and equipment to effectively prosecute the war. Issues that were discussed at the occasion will be disseminated to the rest of the troops in the frontline by the 300 representatives that attended. Toju200:They're not battling terrorism on a large scale like Nigeria, Chad and Egypt in North Africa. You see most of these weapon cache are discovered along border line territories. These terrorist hide there weapon cache in small cells where they can come pick it up anytime they need them. The way terrorist operates in the north Africa is defferent from West and central African countries. They operate in small unit and hit there target and blend in back to the society unlike here where they operate in large numbers or groups. |

krattoss:Of course this is about surviving and repelling enemies attack, use anything available to you. The most important thing is that the enemy does not overrun your base. But after battles, cache of weapons captured must be assembled and recorded for proper documentation and for forensic investigation must be transfered to the theatre command HQ. Some are repaired, documented and injected into the theatre, especially the AAG and Gun trucks. Some unserviceable weapons are destroyed from getting into the wrong hands especially assault riffles. I remember sometimes about 2-3 years ago some soldiers returning from the north east where caught with AK riffles, investigation reveals that they where weapons captured from BHT that where not remitted. So enemies weapon or Armor can be used to defend ones life or base but must be returned for proper documentation. |

NAF IMMORTALIZES LATE COMBAT PILOT AS PERMANENT SECRETARY MOD COMMISSIONS NEW ACCOMMODATION IN ABUJA In keeping with its tradition of immortalizing fallen heroes, especially those that paid the supreme price while serving the nation, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has named a newly built block of six 3-bedroom flats at the NAF Base, Asokoro, Abuja after late Group Captain Ubong Nnamso Akpan. The late senior officer who was a combat helicopter pilot died while on a combat mission in counterinsurgency operations in the Northeast on 13 November 2014. The building project, which was commissioned today, 26 June 2019, by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence (MOD), Mrs Nuratu Batagarawa, was executed in furtherance of the Federal Government’s determination to meet the residential accommodation needs of officers and men of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN). Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Permanent Secretary assured the NAF of the commitment of the Federal Government towards ensuring adequate provision of basic infrastructures for AFN personnel through befitting office and residential accommodations as well other welfare incentives. According to her, given the statutory mandate of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation, the AFN deserves befitting welfare packages. "Therefore, we are determined to continue to accord due attention to the welfare of our troops and continue to pursue these projects steadily, within the limit of available resources", she said. Speaking further, Mrs Batagarawa used the occasion to acknowledge the robust support and encouragement of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, without which, she said, the numerous projects and operational feats being celebrated would not have been possible. She added that the Ministry would not relent in its efforts to continue to boost the morale of personnel of the AFN for enhanced professional performance. The Permanent Secretary also expressed her appreciation to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, for the cooperation extended to the Ministry by the NAF towards the successful implementation of the project. Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Administration (COA) Headquarters NAF, Air Vice Marshal Kingsley Lar, noted that the new block would not only provide the needed comfort for the beneficiaries, but also augment the numerous ones being provided by the administration of Air Marshal Abubakar in ameliorating the accommodation challenges of NAF personnel in Abuja. The COA recalled, with nostalgia, the enormous contributions of late Group Captain Akpan to the Service and the nation, particularly in the counter insurgency operations. He noted that the late senior officer paid the supreme price while in active duty, hence the need to immortalize him. He expressed NAF’s continued commitment to support the families of all fallen heroes in all respects, while urging all serving personnel to remain unwavering in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities. Highlights of the occasion included the reading of the citation/Service Record of late Group Captain Akpan and presentation of keys to the beneficiaries of the new accommodation. slimthugchimee2:You mean the captured BHT, Honestly the only suffering he gets was when his been captured by troops and civilian task force. Once his been handed over to the Military police/intelligence is been treated well and deradicalized under Operation Safe Corridor, a military facility on the outskirts of Gombe Nigeria, that houses ex-jihadist fighters for the deradicalization programme under the Federal government amnesty offer. Hence these facilities that houses this convicts in Borno and Gombe are of best standards and practise. The Nigerian Counter Terrorism Strategy recognised that force alone was not enough to combat violent extremist elements in Nigeria and that a multi-faceted approach was required to counter the threat of violent extremism. The Office of the National Security Advisor (ONSA) was tasked with developing an ambitious countering violent extremism (CVE) programme consisting of three elements: community-based counter radicalisation; strategic communications; and de-radicalisation. The de-radicalisation element of the CVE programme included establishing a prison based de-radicalisation programme for sentenced and pre-trial prisoners. |
