bad move by Unity bank to do 1:10 they should have done 1:5. Now they have 11bln share outstanding at 5Naira. 2.50Naira with 22bln outstanding would have been better. I can not see myself buying Unity Above 3Naira. |

megainvest: @Elai147,
This confusion in the NSE is the reason I raised this quiz.
NSE doesn't always quote the ex-div date and the ex-div date is NOT always the closure date stated. You have to read the corporate action document very well to know the exact date. When that date is not clearly stated, then you should target at least 3 working days before the stated closure date.
This is the reason why sometimes people get the dividend and other times they dont. It's simply because the date was not well understood. In summary of all that has been said:
1. If you want a dividend you should buy at least one day before the ex-div date. 2. Ex-div date is the day the stock price is adjusted (mark down). From that day forward, you no longer qualify for dividend. 3. Closure date or Record date is usually a number of days after the ex-div date and it varies. This date is set to accommodate those who bought a day to ex-div date. 4. NSE dates are mixed up. Sometimes they report qualification date, others ex-div date and others record date. 5. The terms closure date and qualification date are misused sometimes. 6. To be 100% sure and avoid confusion, always ensure you have bought the stock at least 3 days to the first quoted date. No,Price is adjusted on the day the dividend is paid. For example the Gsk Share price will be adjusted on 12th of june. |

kettykings: Yes they voted for continuation but buhari is now elected as the president of Nigeria and not president of APC. Moreover Goodluck Jonathan built flyover in kano, commissioned railway project from Lagos to kano that are APC States and even built Universities in non PDP States Which flyover? The flyover was built by Kwankwaso. |

megainvest: 100% correct. The mark down date = ex-dividend date. The qualification date is the day before the mark down date. To get the dividend, you must remain with the stock till close of business on qualification date. Mark down date is the day the dividend is paid to investors. Eg Company A is trading at 20Naira declares 5 Naira, when dividend is paid the price is marked down to 15Naira.Your name must be on Register before Qualification or Ex-div date |

megainvest: What I said is "mark down date for dividend payment". The twist was intentional just to drive home the point of really understanding the dates marking down means removing dividend payout from price of a stock. |

megainvest: Morning quiz for all!
Mr bear has 1000 units of Company X shares on 13th of April 2015. Company X has just declared a dividend of N20 per share and the mark down date for dividend payment is 22nd of April 2015. Mr bear decides to sell off his shares to Mr bull on 21st April 2015. However, the settle date for Mr bull's transaction is T+3 which is 24th April 2015. Who gets the dividend?
A. Mr bear B. Mr bull c. None of them (i.e. Money goes back to company X!) Your quiz was confusing. You mentioned payment date instead of Qualification date. |
