Car TalkMercedes Benz EQV Makes Debuts As World’s First All-electric Premium Van by Bigbass(op): 7:57am On Aug 24, 2019
Mercedes Benz revealed the EQV Concept as a near-production prototype, which is now morphing into a mass-production vehicle wearing the simple EQV moniker. The German company describes the newest addition to the EQ lineup as the “first fully-electric premium MPV” and promises it will deliver emissions-free mobility combined with “impressive driving abilities.” The passenger van will celebrate its world public premiere during this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show from 12 to 22 September

Mercedes first previewed this electric van with the Concept EQV in March at the Geneva auto show and said at the time that this electrified version of the company’s V-class van would have a 100.0-kWh lithium-ion battery. The production EQV keeps that battery size, but the usable capacity is now listed as 90.0 kWh. Mercedes says the EQV will have a range of about 249 miles based on the more liberal European cycle, although official tests have yet to be conducted.

The EQV is practically identical to the concept from earlier this year. That’s good news as the study featured a sleek and balanced design, which stays true to Mercedes’ bus roots but also incorporates modern touches like the sweptback headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights.

Car TalkNew Peugeot E-208 Revealed With 211-mile Range by Bigbass(op): 7:49am On Aug 24, 2019
Peugeot is now taking orders for the all-new 208. First deliveries for this models are due in early 2020.

The 208 range comprises four trim levels (Active, Allure, GT Line and GT), with buyers being able to pick three petrol engines, one diesel or a fully electric set-up.

Active trim (£16,250) includes alloy wheels (steel wheels for the e-208), Active Safety Brake with pedestrian detection, electric and heated door mirrors and LED daytime running lights. The e-208 in Active trim also features pre-heating functionality and automatic air conditioning.

Allure models (£18,850) benefit from leather-effect seat trim, 3D i-Cockpit with a configurable 3D head-up instrument panel and ‘claw effect’ full LED rear-lights. The e-208 starts from £26,250 in Allure spec.

GT Line models (£20,070) feature front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, 17-inch wheels, eight-colour ambient interior lighting, and full LED headlights. Buyers will have to cough up £28,100 for the electric model in GT Line.

Only the e-208 is offered in GT spec (£29,650), which features automated parking assistance, adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go Alcantara trim, heated front seats, and 3D i-Cockpit with a larger 10-inch touchscreen.

The new 208 is well-distanced from its predecessor, adopting the same design language as the new 508. The front is defined by the pair of large LED fangs hanging off the new headlights, and overall the new model receives a much sportier looking bodykit than before. GT Line cars as pictured get flared black wheel arches – a visual nod to the 205 GTI – plus a large black spoiler on the hatch-lid. Every car boasts the new, distinctive rear end too, making use of a gloss black insert spanning the width of the tailgate.

Car Talk2020 Lincoln Aviator First Drive Review With Luxury Lifestyle by Bigbass(op): 10:10pm On Aug 21, 2019
The Aviator buries the MKT’s ancient bones and moves to a new architecture that rotates the engine 90 degrees so that torque now flows to either the rear wheels or all four. Sharing this core componentry with the new Explorer, the Aviator is still very much a gilded Ford. Crucially, the visible and tangible similarities are few and insignificant enough not to matter.

Aviator can be hustled quite capably around some pretty serious mountain roads thanks to the advanced suspension and inherent chassis balance afforded by its rear-drive-based architecture (all-wheel drive is optional). Though the standard steering ratio and tuning is unique to Aviator, we sampled the available adaptive steering, which is paired with the air suspension and alters the ratio and effort based on speed. Thankfully, it’s not overt in this adaptability. Its effort is consistent and natural, there’s no slack on center, and turn-in is crisp in the Normal driving mode. Selecting Sport mode, or rather “Excite,” dials in exactly the right amount of extra weight to provide additional confidence and control when on a twistier road.

Those drive modes also change pedal feel from the electronic brake-by-wire system, with distinctive setups for Normal/Conserve, Excite and the two inclement weather modes. It’s a subtle difference and you may not even notice it, yet it’s important to note that there’s no Individual mode that allows you to mix and match different control calibrations. Lincoln engineers thought that sort of enthusiast-oriented fiddling really wasn’t in keeping with the Aviator’s character and purpose. Either way, the settings as-is are well calibrated and appropriate for the situations they’re intended for. We wouldn’t have fiddled with them anyway.

Car TalkAcura’s Type S Concept Is A Sedan With A Stunning Look by Bigbass(op): 3:01pm On Aug 16, 2019
Acura is looking for a hit. While the strong-selling MDX and RDX crossovers are largely supporting the luxury brand, Acura would really like to gain some enthusiast credibility and make good on the brand’s performance claims. Hence the return of the Type S performance badge, applied here on the Acura Type S sports-sedan concept.

This concept rides on 285-width summer tires on all four corners, which is positively huge for an Acura sedan. Four-piston yellow Brembo brake calipers are used, shining brightly through 21-inch wheels. Instead of the fake vents all over the Civic Type R. Acura says the venting and grille space up front is functional, allowing air to get through to the “high-performance engine and brake package.” Though again, we don’t know what that high-performance engine will be just yet.

It seems that the TLX will be the first production Acura to revive this treatment. A turbocharged V-6 is said to be in the cards, although no specs are available yet.

Car TalkHonda Odyssey Celebrates 25 Years With New Updates by Bigbass(op): 7:20am On Aug 14, 2019
The Honda odyssey has been around for 25 years, so what better way for Honda to celebrate than by slapping a bunch of chrome onto the fifth generation of its tried-and-true minivan? A 25th Anniversary Edition package is newly available for the 2020 model year and it comes with all manner of adornments.

The package, which is essentially a collection of accessories, includes numerous 25th Anniversary badges, a special key, illuminated door sills, and chrome trim for the roof rails and doors. Two levels of the package are available, one with the badges and chrome trim and another that also adds some gaudy chrome wheels (we’re not sold on the aesthetics). But we admire Honda’s willingness to embrace tackiness. According to the online configurator, the package costs $1803 without the 19-inch chrome wheels and a steep $3999 with the wheels.

All Odyssey trims will now come with the 10-speed automatic transmission as standard instead of just the top two trims (Touring and Elite). Previous to the 2020 model year, the lower-trim (LX, EX, EX-L) Odysseys sent their power through a nine-speed automatic that has been eliminated from the Odyssey lineup. Every model will have Honda’s start-stop system as standard now that the 10-speed is on every trim, too. There was no fuel economy difference according to EPA ratings, but we do enjoy using Honda’s 10-speed automatic more than the nine-speed.

Pricing for the 2020 Odyssey starts at $31,785 for the base LX trim and ranges up to $48,415 for the top Elite model. The 2020 model dealership start today.

Car Talk2020 Lincoln Aviator Hybrid Has More Horsepower Than Expected by Bigbass(op): 9:57pm On Aug 13, 2019
Lincoln seems to be in the midst of an awakening with new products like the 2020 Aviator SUV. The plug-in hybrid version of Lincoln’s new mid-size SUV will offer more power and torque than previously announced, a lot more in fact.

Lincoln has confirmed the powertrain at 494 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque, up from the 450 hp and 600 lb-ft that was announced when the vehicle debuted at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. That makes the Lincoln quite a bit more potent than the rival BMW X5 x4eDrive iPerformance , which only comes with 394 hp and 442 lb-ft.

The 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 still produces 400 hp, but the torque figure has gone up from 400 to 415 lb-ft – a modest but welcome increase. The hybrid model makes even more than expected, though, with power jumping from 450 hp to 494 hp and torque from 600 lb-ft to 630 lb-ft.

Car Talk2020 Toyota Tundra Pricing And Review by Bigbass(op): 4:32pm On Aug 12, 2019
Toyota Tundra went through its latest redesign, ushering in a more rugged and modern look. Since then, not much has changed, save for the 2015 introduction of the TRD Pro model. Most of the 2020 Toyota Tundra lineup will carry on unchanged, but the TRD Pro model will receive a few valuable updates. Visually, the 2020 Toyota Tundra will be nearly identical to the current model. It’ll continue with its massive grille with an upper air intake, to-the-point body lines, and two cab formats: Double Cab or CrewMax.

The 2020 Toyota Tundra is dropping the smaller 4.6L V8, while the starting price increases approximately $1,755 to $35,020 before destination charges. There is also the introduction of the 2020 Tundra TRD Pro shorter double cab at a lower prices. Toyota is also celebrating 20-years of the Toyota Tundra this summer.

The most significant changes to the 2020 model are the inclusion of the standard Toyota Safety Sense P, bundle of active safety systems (forward collision and lane departure warnings, active cruise control and automatic high beams) along with Apple Car Play, and Android Auto smartphone connectivity on every trim level. The 2020 Tundra also does away with the 4.6-liter V-8 in lower trims; all models come standard with the tried-and-true 5.7-liter V-8 and a six-speed automatic transmission. Output figures for the 5.7 are unchanged from the 2019 model at 381 horsepower and 401 pounds-feet of torque.

Car TalkThe Future Bmw X8 M Brings Hybrid V8 Power by Bigbass(op): 7:28am On Aug 09, 2019
According to this new report from Automobile Magazine, a BMW X8 M is currently in the works and it’s going to be a sort of crossover between the BMW X6 and M5 Competition. I know, have fun wrapping your head around that one. According to this report, the upcoming X8 M is internally called “Project Rockstar” and it’s going to be a hybrid SUV from BMW M only.

M Division CEO Markus Flasch recently said it was actually likely such a car will exist in the future but gave no hints as to what it could be. We’d heard some whispers that it could be a potential BMW X8, an SUV entirely unique to the M Division. While we didn’t have any concrete evidence, it not seems as if our sources are correct.

It’s still said to be powered by the brand’s 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8, which will likely develop around 600 hp. However, paired to that V8 is said to be an electric motor and some batteries to help it make upwards of 750 hp. That’s an extraordinary amount of power and would qualify the BMW X8 M as the most powerful production Bimmer in history.

Car Talk2020 Nissan Sentra Speid With A Manual Transmission Ransmission by Bigbass(op): 7:21am On Aug 09, 2019
The new Sentra appears to be better-looking inside and out, and we’re happy to see that it’ll still offer a stick-shift.

Also, there’s a manual! The 2019 Sentra offers a manual in the base trim and slightly warm Nismo trim, but it’s great to see the next-generation won’t be giving it up. Even if it isn’t the most engaging gearbox to row through, the ability to shift gears ourselves is still very much appreciated when the other option is a CVT.

We’d wager that the Sentra’s standard engine will be a naturally aspirated inline-four, possibly the Rouge Sport’s 2.0-liter which makes 141 horsepower, with a turbocharged engine possible as an upgrade motor. A continuously variable automatic transmission is sure to complement the six-speed stick, and the automatic will likely come standard on most of the Sentra’s trim levels.

Car TalkIIHS Concluded That Knee Bag Aren’t Effective by Bigbass(op): 8:05am On Aug 08, 2019
An IIHS study released Wednesday concluded that knee airbags didn’t significantly reduce the risk of injury in real-world crashes, and test data from the agency may show that the supplemental airbags may have increased injury rates in certain crashes performed by the insurance industry-funded agency.

The organization gathered data from its internal crash testing as well as that from real-world crashes, and compared injury results between vehicles with and without knee airbags. In real-world crashes, knee airbags barely reduced the likelihood of injuries from 7.9% for cars without them to 7.4% for cars with them. In the IIHS’s controlled testing, it found that in moderate overlap frontal tests, the airbags had no effect. In the small overlap frontal test, the airbags slightly increased the risk for injury around the legs, though they also slightly reduced the risk for head injuries.

Car Talk2020 Nissan Titan Xd's Is Putting An End To The Cummins Diesel Engine by Bigbass(op): 7:42am On Aug 08, 2019
Nissan will stop production of the Titan XD with the 5.0 litres Cummins diesel V-8 in December 2019. The regular-cab version of both the Titan and the Titan XD are also casualties of a 2020 refresh that will be revealed later this year, Nissan spokesperson Wendy Orthman confirmed to C/D. Nissan claims this is a move to “focus on the heart of the truck market.”

The diesel engine isn’t the only Titan option to go away at the end of this year. The Nissan representative informed us that the regular-cab variant of both the regular Titan and the heavier duty Titan XD will also be continued. That will leave just extended cab and quad cab variants available.

Though these options are going away for the Titan, the truck will receive a refresh this fall. We’ve seen the updated Truck covered in camouflage. It shows a tweaked front fascia with a grille that has a very slight “T” shape to the opening, a clear allusion to the first letter in the truck’s name. The interior appears to be very lightly updated with a larger infotainment screen and new buttons. This updated model will likely only feature the 5.6-liter has powered V8 makes 390 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque, unless Nissan has another engine in the works to offer alongside or in place of that V8.

Car TalkTop 12 List Of The Most Expensive Suvs 2019-2020 by Bigbass(op): 7:05pm On Aug 07, 2019
12. BMW X5 M $102,695. 567HP V8 TWIN-TURBO

The BMW X5 M is an SUV. The 2018 X5 M starts at $76,502 (MSRP), with a destination charge of $995. It gets EPA-estimated 16 MPG combined. The X5 M may have slightly less cargo space than its competitors, and its six-figure starting price is prohibitive, but all is forgiven in the face of its 567-hp twin-turbocharged V-8. That powerplant, plus the standard eight-speed automatic transmission, propelled this beast from zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds in our testing. Yes, 3.8 seconds! The fun doesn’t stop with straight-line speed, either. To drive the X5 M is to challenge the laws of physics.

11. VOLVO XC90 T8 eAWD 440HP TWIN ENGINE PLUG-IN HYBRID. $105,900

The 2019 Volvo XC90 places in the middle of our competitive luxury midsize SUV rankings. It has a top-notch interior and loads of standard safety features, but its performance trails that of many rivals, and it has a poor predicted reliability rating.

XC90 T8 has a plug-in hybrid powertrain that pairs the inline-four twin-charged engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 444 horsepower. The electric assistance helps propel the T8 off the line with authority, though some critics lament the unrefined transitions between the electric and gasoline engines. All XC90 models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s OK, but it sometimes hesitates to downshift, struggles to find the right gear, and occasionally shifts harshly.

10. MERCEDES AMG GLE 63 S COUPE $111,995. 577HP

The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupé skillfully embodies the firmly established principles of Mercedes-Benz design: sensuousness and clarity. The top-of-the- range V8 model from Affalterbach manages in an emotively appealing way to bring the fascination of motor sport to everyday life with a powerful dominance. A very first glance reveals the new four-door coupé to be an extrovert, proudly standing on its large wheels.

Mercedes AMG GLE 63 S Coupe thunders from rest to 62mph in about the same time it takes to say its name, which seems about right considering that its slightly old-school biturbo 5.5-litre V8 pumps out 577bhp and 560lb ft in its marginally hotter ‘S’ form. With the assistance of 4Matic four-wheel drive, a standard 9G-Tronic nine-speed transmission and the massively shod optional 22-inch alloys, this GLE emphatically denies its elephantine kerb weight much say in the matter. The 0-62mph dash takes a scant 4.2sec, while electronics call time on straight line performance at 155mph.

Car Talk2019 Toyota RAV4 Won TSP+ Award by Bigbass(op): 7:51pm On Aug 06, 2019
The Toyota RAV4 is one of the best-selling car in the World, behind only the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks, but how safe is it in a crash? The IIHS recently tested the 2019 RAV4 and as you’d expect, the results were excellent (with a slight caveat).

There’s a big caveat, however. The TSP+ award only applies to RAV4 Hybrid Limited models that are equipped with the available curve-adaptive LED projector headlights. These headlights earned a “Good” rating, but the other headlights in the RAV4 lineup didn’t fare as well. The LED reflectors on the gas-only RAV4 and the Hybrid LE trim received a “Marginal” rating, while the static LED projectors on the Hybrid XLE, Hybrid XSE, and Hybrid Limited are rated “Poor.” The CR-V’s headlights are rated “Acceptable” or “Marginal” depending on the trim. Halogen lights on the LX, EX, and EX-L are “Marginal,” while the LED reflectors on the Touring trim are deemed “Acceptable.”

Like the CR-V, the RAV4 earned “Good” scores in all crash tests. Fortunately, this doesn’t vary based on trim. Both vehicles got a “Superior” score in front crash prevention, avoiding collisions in the 12-mph and 25-mph tests. But while this rating comes thanks to an optional safety system on the CR-V, the RAV4 earns it all with standard equipment.

Car Talk2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Price Still Cheap by Bigbass(op): 7:38pm On Aug 06, 2019
Toyota presented the brand new Toyota Yaris Hatchback back in April. To say that it’s an improvement over its dated predecessor is an understatement. Based on the Mazda2, the new 2020 Yaris stands out from the subcompact crowd with its bold styling, sporty handling, and a revamped interior.

2020 Toyota Yaris has been offered as a sedan or hatchback usually have different prices, Toyota is taking an entirely different approach because the 2020 Yaris hatchback won’t cost you any more than the sedan.

All Yaris hatchback models come standard with 16-inch aluminum wheels, fog lamps, keyless entry with push-button start, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and automated emergency braking. The XLE trim adds faux-leather upholstery, automatic LED headlamps, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, automatic climate control, and rain-sensing wipers.

The hatchback is powered by the same 106-hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine as the sedan and should deliver similar fuel economy; the 2019 sedan with the automatic transmission is rated for 32 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, and 35 mpg combined.

2020 LE Hatchback will start at $18,705 and $19,705 if you upgrade to the XLE trim. Both prices include the destination charge and match the prices of the LE and XLE versions of the sedan. For reference, this also makes the 2020 Yaris cheaper than the outgoing model, which started at $17,285 for the equivalent LE model.

Car Talk2020 Honda Pilot Comes With A Black Edition by Bigbass(op): 8:14am On Aug 04, 2019
Year after Honda gave the Pilot a significant update for the year 2019 model, the Japanese automaker is now adding the new range-topping Black Edition trim for 2020. Based on the Honda Pilot Elite, the same as our long-term Honda, the Pilot Black Edition adds several new design cues inside and out.

The Black Edition (pictured above) is the most aggressive looking and most expensive of the Pilot trim levels. To differentiate it on the exterior, Honda has added badges to the grille and tailgate, 20-inch black wheels, and blacked-out the grille and trim pieces. Like its Ridgeline equivalent, the only color available for the Black Edition is Crystal Black Pearl. Inside, the cabin receives special red accent lighting complimented by red stitching on the seats, door panels, and steering wheel. The Black Edition also features special logos on the seats and floor mats.

Pricing for the 2020 Pilot varies drastically depending on the trim level. The base LX trim with front-wheel-drive starts at $32,645 (including a $1,095 destination charge) while the Black Edition with AWD tops out at $50,715. Some optional features include Cabin Talk (an in-vehicle announcement system), a power liftgate, wireless charging, and 4G LTE connectivity.

Car Talk2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition Price Released by Bigbass(op): 8:03am On Aug 04, 2019
Toyota is adding two special edition models for the 2020 model year, the Land Cruiser Heritage Edition and 86 Hakone Edition. Both vehicles will feature special touches and they won’t come cheap, especially for the hulking Land Cruiser.

Toyota only offered one option on the 2019 Land Cruiser, rear seat entertainment for $2,200, and it comes along for the ride here, too. A regular 2020 Land Cruiser is set to start at $86,710. Under the hood is the same 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Toyota’s go-anywhere goods like the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension system, CRAWL control, Multi-Terrain Select, and Off-Road Turn Assist all come standard on the 2020 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition.

Toyota previously said they’ll be hitting dealers in late summer, so check your local Toyota dealer out soon to see if they were lucky enough to take delivery of the special-edition car.

Car Talk2021 Toyota Sienna Spied For The First Time by Bigbass(op): 5:50pm On Jul 30, 2019
The SUV or Crossover explosion is in full force, but the minivan isn’t dead just yet. In fact, when it comes to a do-all family vehicle with seven-passenger seating, you’ll find more than a few opinions that still favor the minivan as the superior machine. The Toyota Sienna has a long history in the shrinking minivan segment, but as we can see with these brand new spy photos, it will live on in a fourth generation.

This prototype was recently caught undergoing hot weather testing in Death Valley, California, where we imagine the extensive camouflage tarps make cooling even more of a challenge. This represents our first look at the next-generation minivan, and to Toyota’s credit, exterior design elements are well and truly obscured.

The big wheels, lower grille mesh and flared rocker panels suggest that this particular next-generation Sienna is an SE, the “sportier” trim level that boasts tighter suspension and steering tuning (current version shown above). Much like it did with the recently redesign Camry and Avalon, it seems reasonable to assume that the dynamic gap between the Sienna’s LE and SE trim levels would narrow given the handling improvements inherent to Toyota’s TNG platform that assuredly underpins its new minivan.

As for power, the familiar 3.5-liter V6 with an eight-speed automatic should be present, with all-wheel-drive being an option. Additionally, a hybrid model should arrive in the next-generation van as well.

The current Sienna received a minor refresh for the 2018 model year, but the third-generation platform dates all the way back to 2010. As such, we expect Toyota to fully reveal its new Sienna early-to-mid next year as a 2021 model.

Car TalkHonda Civic Si Vs Hyundai Elantra Sport Compact Comparison by Bigbass(op): 10:17pm On Jul 27, 2019
If you’re looking for the ultimate performance Honda or Hyundai , the 2019 Civic Si and 2019 Elantra Sport aren’t your bag. Save your pennies for a Civic Type R or Veloster N, two of the best-driving sport compacts to hit the streets, since, well, ever.

On some level, I feel for the engineers responsible for the Civic Si and Elantra Sport. With the 306-hp Type R and 275-hp Veloster N sitting at the top of the ladder, starting at around $30,000 and the 175-hp Civic and 147-hp Elantra nipping at their heels for $20,000 at the bottom, there’s not much daylight for these warmed-over sport compacts. Yet both manufacturers made the best of a not-great situation.

Then again, if you are in the market for affordable performance, the price jump to a Type R (starting at $37,320) or Veloster N, (starting at $27,830) may be the difference between making rent or picking up a second or third job working for Lyft or GrubHub. Given their price points—$23,645 as tested for the Elantra Sport and $25,960 for the Civic Si—both automakers have done a lot with a little.

The Honda team arguably has the stronger hand. The Civic Si sedan (also available as a coupe) benefits greatly from both ends of the Civic lineup. From the Civic Type R, the Si gets a real mechanical limited-slip front differential and a lesser version of its electronically adjusting adaptive suspension with two modes: normal and sport. From the standard Civic, the Si gets a juiced-up version of Honda’s 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4, now making 205 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque, paired to a six-speed manual.

Car Talk2020 Toyota 4runner Reviews And Specifications by Bigbass(op): 9:11pm On Jul 25, 2019
Toyota must have thought the same thing, because they put together a brief video tutorial for the 4runner’s manually operated, two-speed transfer case. It lets you shift the truck between two- and four-wheel-drive (at speeds below 50 mph); or to its low-range 4WD for low-speed rock crawling, driving in soft sand – or wherever you want, frankly.

The Toyota’s outstanding Crawl Control can automatically trigger brakes at individual wheels to walk you up or down hills with no human throttle or brake inputs, if those inclines seem beyond a driver’s skill grade.

By now, serious off-roaders – can I get a show of dirty hands? – are rolling their eyes and asking why I’m bothering to explain the obvious. But that’s the point: The 4Runner, and vehicles like it, were once synonymous with the SUV: a steel-frame, truck-based vehicle with genuine four-wheel-drive. Today, the 4Runner is a niche vehicle, including features and capabilities that can seem odd or superfluous to the crossover-driving masses.

2020 4Runner is as charming and trustworthy as ever. If your lifestyle leans toward commuting, family chauffeuring, or road trip on the Interstate, well, let’s put it charitably: The 4Runner is not the ideal tool for the job. Besides the inherent detriments common to truck-based SUVs, the 4Runner was last full redesigned for 2010. As such, its ride and handling, interior and fuel economy, especially (you won’t see 20 mpg on a bet) have fallen behind the competitive curve.

To address some – but not all – issues, Toyota has mildly updated this 2020 version. Grilles are slightly revised, in part to accommodate a new front radar sensor for the previously unavailable but now standard Toyota Safety Sense Plus suite of accident avoidance features: automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automated high beams and lane-departure alert with trailer sway control.

Inside, a new driver’s instrument panel is more handsome and informative, including a chrono-style speedometer and tach. Toyota has also managed to shoehorn in its 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or Alexa. The 4Runner previously had a tiny 6.1-inch touchscreen and none of those smartphone connectivity features. Should you choose a TRD Pro or Limited model, the new system adds a 15-speaker, 550-watt JBL audio unit. In another nod to modernity, back-seat riders get a new pair of USB ports that fans have been demanding (the old 4Runner had one). Proximity entry with push button start also becomes standard on nearly all models.

Mechanically, the TRD Pro adds a cat-back exhaust system with a slightly huskier growl. Though it’s questionable whether anyone really needs to hear the 4Runner’s ancient, 4.0-liter V6 groan its way to high revs. That V6 delivers an unchanged 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. Toyota says it’s good for a 0-60 mph run in a reasonable 7.5 seconds, which is a touch quicker than a burly Dogde Durango with its 293-hp V6.

As noted, nothing announces the 4Runner’s authenticity like the manly-man transfer case once found on every four-wheeler. (You might crawl beneath the TRD Pro version to spot its 2.5-inch-diameter Fox shocks, or its expanded skidplates, but that would take more effort). Today, even most Jeeps (or the 2020 Toyota Tacoma pickup we tested at Moab) have replaced manual transfer cases with electronic knobs or switches, which are easier to operate but not nearly as tactile and cool. Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system and Crawl Control are still operated with knobs, though they’re oddly located on the ceiling forward of the rearview mirror.

Toyota hasn’t divulged pricing for the 2020 4Runner that goes on sale this fall, but cost increases should be negligible. For reference, a rear-drive, 2019 SR model starts from $36,405, while the TRD Pro goes for $47,910. Analysts’ crystal balls do see Toyota bringing an all-new 4Runner to showrooms, finally, around 2022. It seems likely that the 4Runner can withstand market pressures until that sixth-generation model arrives, especially with its antiquated infotainment and missing safety tech features being corrected for 2020. Its market niche is also showing surprising endurance, thanks in part to Americans’ increasing demand for SUVs with authentic design and rugged personality. This old soldier actually sold nearly 100,000 more units in 2018 than it did when it was brand new in 2010.

Car TalkAudi’s Hot New Crossover Alternative by Bigbass(op): 2:59pm On Jul 24, 2019
Audi revealed its new 2020 A6 Allroad, which we described as the cure for lame crossovers. We still stand by that. Based on the also new A6 sedan, the A6 Allroad is a wagon variant with a slightly higher ride height equipped with various features such as hill descent control for off-road conditions. There also enhanced wheel arches to help provide a more “outdoorsy” look, similar to what Subaru does when turning the Legacy sedan into the Outback.

But at the time of the reveal, there was no indication the Quattro AWD A6 Allroad was coming to North America. Its younger sibling, the A4 Allroad, is fortunately offered here, but nothing was mentioned in Audi’s press release about the A6 Allroad’s arrival. Today, however, new information has come to light. We’ve been alerted to Audi’s official Canadian website, and lo and behold, there’s a page displaying “The 2020 Audi A6 Allroad.” Tagline: “Adventure Awaits.”.

Car Talk2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Has 760-HP More Than Hellcat by Bigbass(op): 2:12pm On Jun 20, 2019
Ford has finally confirmed the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500’s 5.2-liter supercharged V8 will produce a whopping 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. That makes it more powerful than the 650-hp Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and 707 hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat but it falls short of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, which has 797 hp and 707 lb-ft on tap.

760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. That’s a lot of power that puts it ahead of a lot of serious competitors. That’s 110 more horsepower than the Chevy Camaro ZL1; 53 more horsepower than a Dogde Challenger Hellcat; and even 5 more horsepower than the Chevy Corvette ZR1. Even against exotic cars it’s impressive, with 70 more horsepower than a Porsche 911 GT2 RS, 50 more than a Ferrari F8 Tributo, and 1 more than the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ.But, as Mopar fans already know, the Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye’s 797 horsepower and the Demon’s 840 horsepower still surpass the new Shelby.

Of course, as we’ve covered previously, the Shelby isn’t just about horsepower. Its dual-clutch transmission shifts gears in under 100 milliseconds. Its aerodynamics can produce up to 550 pounds of downforce. It even has huge 16.5-inch brake rotors and available carbon fiber wheels.

Car Talk2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 And 718 Spyder Arrive With 414-HP Engines by Bigbass(op): 9:33am On Jun 18, 2019
The Cayman GT4 is back, and so is the Boxster Spyder. Get excited, folks. This time they’re called the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder (not Boxster ) respectively, and the mid-engine Porsches are packing even more punch than before. We absolutely adored the Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder when we drove them a few short years ago, and this duo promises to be better yet.

The two mid-engine sports cars rank as the top performance picks in their respective lineups and remedy the biggest problem many enthusiasts had with the 718 Cayman and Boxster: the fact their turbocharged four-cylinder engines didn’t sound as good as the flat-six engine in each car’s predecessor.

Porsche says it’s a new engine, and it develops 414 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque on its way up to an 8,000 rpm redline. The new 4.0-liter is based-on the same family of turbocharged engines in the new 911, but Porsche has re-engineered it for a non-boosted application. Don’t mistake it for a de-tuned version of the 911 GT3 engine that makes 500 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque, though — that one revs out to a glorious 9,000 rpm. The engine in these cars uses Porsche’s adaptive cylinder control technology, so in low-load situations, it’s able to temporarily interrupt the injection process in one of the two cylinder banks. For now, it looks like a sizable upgrade over the 911 S-derived 3.8-liter flat-six that came in the previous generation of these cars.

Car Talk2020 Bmw X3 M Competition And X4 M Competition. by Bigbass(op): 12:24pm On Jun 17, 2019
The X3 is BMW’s compact crossover SUV, and the X4 is the lower-roofline, sportier-silhouette hatchback version of the same vehicle meant to appeal to younger buyers. The “Competition” designation denotes the still-higher-performance and still-more-expensive versions of both vehicles, and it is Competition versions journalists are testing at and around New York’s Monticello Motor Club country club racetrack. The X3 M and X4 M are indistinguishable from behind the wheel and on their spec sheets, so the only difference is which you prefer. That, and the unfortunate absence of overhead grab handles for passengers in the X4 M.

Tall and taut

Driving on the rolling rural byways of New York and northern New Jersey in the vicinity of the Monticello race circuit, the X3 M and X4 M feel, well, exactly like BMWs. That means the thick-rimmed, leather-wrapped steering wheel provides direct feedback and immediate response to steering inputs.

Especially impressive is the vehicle’s ability to change direction through switchbacks, as the active dampers help the BMW hide its bulk. The active all-wheel drive similarly helps minimize understeer in the slow corners, where a heavy machine with power passing through the front tires would normally frustratingly succumb to sliding its front end.

One contributor to this Toronto Red X4 M Competition’s handling prowess is the addition of chassis braces that reinforce the regular platform to prevent it from twisting under the incredible loads generated by the M upgrades. There are five additional or beefier braces at the front of the chassis and three more or enlarged ones at the rear. Models with a sunroof get another A-frame brace under the bottom of the vehicle at the rear to further resist twisting forces.

This is critical because “the chassis is the biggest suspension component,” Barbisch noted. The aim is to take it out of the equation as much as is possible by making it as stiff as is practical. The result is a pair of crossovers that drive much like their M3 and M4 cousins, just higher.

Regular X3 M/X4 Ms roll on dubs, but the Competition models I tested mount their huge Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber to 21-inch wheels.

Pinnacle of inline-6 power

BMW’s most-powerful straight-6 ever, a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter unit, lives under the hood of both vehicles. In regular X3 M/X4 M trim, it produces 473 horsepower and 442-pound-feet of torque. In Competition spec, horsepower rises to 503, but torque is unchanged. It powers all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Fully 90 percent of this engines are different from previous BMW 3.0-liter straight-6s. This engine has a larger bore and a shorter stoke, as well as a forged crankshaft and forged pistons, to push the rev limit to 7,700 rpm. In the Competition version, the air intake and exhaust systems are enlarged for better flow at maximum revs.

The engine engineers seem most proud of how quickly the straight-6 revs. In fact, I found it revs so fast that, with the transmission in manual mode, it can be easy to hit the rev limiter when coming out of slow, second-gear corners on the track. It’s probably better to leave it in automatic mode than to play Formula One driver by squeezing the paddles.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB Seven-Seater Will Be Arriving Later This Year
June 11, 2019 Carzbass 0 Comments Edit

The long-awaited 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLB has just been launched as the latest addition to the German car manufacturer’s huge fleet of SUVs.

The Mercedes-Benz GLB initially appearing as a concept before becoming very real, was unveiled tonight in Utah. It’s about the same size as the GLA and GLC, but can seat two more people than those cars in optional configurations. It’ll be made here and sold here, and my early guess is that many, many of these will be sold.

As its name implies, the Mercedes-Benz GLB slots nicely between the GLA and the GLC with its 111.4-inch long wheelbase. The SUV will be available as a seven-seater but Mercedes is still referring to the vehicle as forming part of its “global compact car family.”

A digital cockpit with a 7.0-inch instrument screen and a 7.0-inch center touchscreen display dominate the dash, the latter allowing access to a multitude of standard-issue tech including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The automaker’s MBUX system with voice control is also standard, as are a suite of driver assist systems including active braking, crosswind assist, and a rearview camera. Optional packages include blind spot assist, navigation, parking assist, larger 10.25-inch displays, an upgraded Burmester surround system, heads-up display, and much more.

Car TalkMercedes-amg Unveils Most Powerful Four-cylinder 416hp Engine Ever by Bigbass(op): 3:54pm On Jun 07, 2019
The world’s most powerful 2.0 litre, four-cylinder series production engine has been revealed by Mercedes AMG, set to feature in its upcoming ’45’ model range.

Developing 415bhp in its most potent ‘S’ form, this completely new 2.0 turbo replaces the engine in used in the previous A45 A-Class, CLA45 and GLA45

Another major aim has been extracting a sportier driving experience from the engine by altering its torque delivery. While the previous, M133 four-cylinder engine’s torque curve resembled a diesel’s, rising steeply to level off across a wide chunk of the rev range, the new M139 2.0 produces more of a crescendo of thrust.

The aim is to produce the rising rush of acceleration characteristic of a revvy, normally aspirated engine. Rather than flat-lining, diesel-style, from around 2000rpm, AMG’s new engine generates peak torque at 5200rpm, while nevertheless producing more shove than the old one between 1000-2000rpm, the strongest surge developing from 3000rpm. Overall, said Illenberger, “it produces a more sporty delivery”.

The transmission shares the engine’s cooling circuit and has its own heat exchanger mounted directly to it. Also interesting is the fact that the engine is oriented 180 degrees opposite its predecessor with the exhaust manifold and turbo facing the firewall. This apparently helps reduce the complex turns needed for intake and exhaust piping, and that presumably also improves gas flow. And like all of AMG’s big V8s, each engine is assembled by one person’s hands.

The 2020 Lexus RX Makes Debut With Newly Upgraded Features

Product proliferation has become the norm in today’s auto industry. But for Lexus, despite adding an assortment of sedans, sports cars and sport-utility vehicles, the Japanese luxury brand is effectively defined by a single model, the midsize RX crossover.

The Lexus RX created the luxury crossover was made with high levels of comfort, a car-like driving experience, and impeccable build quality. Fast forward to today, the fourth-generation Lexus RX receives significant updates for the 2020 model year on the safety, multimedia, and chassis fronts.

You’ll need a magnifying glass to see the 2020 lexus’s exterior updates. Thinner headlight clusters, a reshaped spindle grille with square-like inserts, and updated taillights comprise the most obvious changes from the outside. The interior looks similar to the pre-refresh model except for the addition of paddle shifters, six standard USB ports and standard NuLuxe leatherette upholstery on all variants.

The bigger news is in the cabin, where a 12.3-inch touchscreen is now available. An 8.0-inch touchscreen comes standard. While the frustrating remote touchpad system is still present, the addition of touchscreen functionality should improve the system’s ergonomics. Both Apple Carplay and Android Auto are now included, the latter of which is the first for a Lexus model. Opting for the bigger screen also brings improved voice control, which Lexus says can handle bigger inputs such as address entries.

Every RX now comes standard with Lexus’s latest suite of safety tech, which includes new technologies such as low-light pedestrian detection and lane-tracing assist. The pre-collision warning system also now detects bicyclists, in addition to other vehicles and pedestrians.

Lexus also tinkered with the RX’s driving dynamics, albeit minimally. New hollowed-out front and rear stabilizer bars and reinforced bushings work to reduce body roll, while the shock absorbers are re-tuned for a smoother ride. Additionally, the F-Sport package now includes Active Variable Suspension (AVS) from the LC sports coupe. The 2020 Lexus RX’s changes are rather reserved, however, the revisions made are welcomed, particularly those to the infotainment system. The inclusion of Android Auto is an especially important addition – one that will hopefully trickle down to other Lexus models. With its slightly tweaked exterior styling and more user-friendly cabin, it’s likely the updated Lexus RX will maintain the sales success of the current crossover

Car TalkWhat You Should Consider Before Buying Any Suvs by Bigbass(op): 5:59pm On Jun 01, 2019
What you should consider before buying any SUVs

SUV Types
There are car-based and truck-based SUVs. But that distinction is much less relevant today, because most models have converged into a design that has more in common with cars than traditional trucks.

Modern SUVs, sometimes called crossovers or CUVs, are built with unibody construction where the frame and body are unified, just as they are in today’s cars. These SUVs have a fully independent suspension, which helps provide better handling and ride comfort than truck-based models. Often, they offer all-wheel drive and can handle moderate off-road situations, but they aren’t designed for more challenging off-road conditions, such as rocks, deep water, loose sand, or steep inclines. Most car-based SUVs have modest towing capacity.

There are some truck-based SUVs left. Those use a body-on-frame platform (often sharing components with the automaker’s pickup trucks). They typically can carry and tow more than a similar-sized car-based model, and when fitted with four-wheel drive, they’re better equipped to tackle serious off-road terrain. But their handling is usually cumbersome, and the ride can be bouncy and unsettled. Most body-on-frame SUVs use a solid rear axle, as pickup trucks do, but some have an independent rear suspension, which gives those a more comfortable ride and more responsive handling characteristics.

We group SUVs by size in our comparisons and ratings.

Subcompact SUVs
One of the fastest growing categories, subcompact SUVs such as the Ford EcoSport, Hyundai Kona, and Mazda CX-3share a platform with similarly sized cars. These are alternatives to a traditional hatchback car, with an elevated ride height, upright seating, and available all-wheel drive. Their small footprint makes them easy to park and maneuver. Buyers shouldn’t expect huge cargo volume or serious off-road capability.

Although technically not subcompacts, there is a growing niche of tiny SUVs from luxury brands such as Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and Mini that offer upscale interiors and strong performance, but these models cost as much as a midsized SUV.

What You’ll Spend: A few basic subcompact SUVs start at less than $20,000, but most climb well into the $20s with popular features, such as all-wheel drive and key advanced safety systems.

Small SUVs
These are well-suited for drivers who are looking for more room than a small sedan can provide. Small SUVs offer a higher driving position than cars and flexible cargo space. Fuel economy is typically 25-28 mpg overall, although there are some thirstier models.

Most have limited off-road abilities but are sufficient for the occasional dirt road, muddy trail, or beach sand.

Compact luxury SUVs typically offer sportier handling, quieter cabins, nicer fit and finish, and more amenities than regular small SUVs, though buyers will pay more and get reduced fuel economy. Many luxury SUVs at this size offer much more thrilling performance than shoppers can get from mainstream brands.

What You’ll Spend: Compact SUVs start in the low 20s and many pass $30,000 in their top trims, which are now more feature-rich than ever. Luxury models hover around $50,000.

Midsized SUVs
For many families, midsized SUVs provide the best balance of power, interior space, cargo room, and safety. Midsized models come in two- and three-row models, although the third row is usually meant for kids to ride it; they’re typically cramped and difficult for adults to get into. Models from mainstream brands typically are equipped with premium features that can rival some luxury vehicles. Fuel economy hovers around 18-22 mpg, and tow capacity is typically 3,500 to 5,000 lbs. Some models must have a trailering package to get that maximum towing capacity. Luxury midsized SUVs tend to rachet up the comfort, performance, and refinement.

What You’ll Spend: Midsized SUVs span from the mid-$30,000s to more than $50,000 for three-row models.

Large SUVs
There is plenty of power, interior space, and towing capacity with large SUV, but they’re very often big, bulky, clumsy, and thirsty. They may be just the thing for drivers who need to haul a trailer. However, a midsized model can be better for passenger comfort and daily driving. Buyers who need more seating capacity, rather than work ability, should consider a minivan. It may not have an SUV’s adventurous image, but a minivan should get much better fuel economy, be more comfortable, and have more flexibility switching between people and cargo.

What You’ll Spend: Large SUV prices now range up to $80,000 or more for top trims. Luxury-branded models for all sizes add considerably to the bottom line, essentially pricing them into the next larger size.

What SUV Buyers Should Consider
Seating
Almost all SUVs carry at least five people. Some midsized and full-sized models include a third-row seat that increases passenger capacity to six, seven, or eight. But many three-row SUVs have limited cargo space when the third-row seats are upright. Most third-row seats can fold flat when not in use, or nearly so, opening up additional luggage space.

Cargo
The SUV’s versatile seating configurations mean that all the space behind the front seats is available for cargo when the second- and third-row seats fold flat. The most convenient type of third-row seat is one with a split design, so one part can be folded for cargo while still allowing someone to sit in the other part. SUVs usually have a higher cargo floor than minivans do, which can make loading heavy objects difficult. Some luxury models come with air suspensions, so drivers can lower the vehicle for easier loading. On the other hand, truck-based models typically have higher maximum payload capacities, so drivers can carry more weight. Some even offer power-operated, hands-free liftgates, making it easier to access the cargo bay.

Safety and Advanced Driver-Assist Systems Technologies
Consumer Reports’ safety ratings include assessments of crash-avoidance capabilities and crash-test results, based on tests performed by the federal government and insurance industry. Further, our road tests detail issues regarding child seat installation and headlight performance.

Forward collision warning (FCW), automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, and blind spot warnings (BSW) are crash avoidance technologies that CR believes should be standard on all vehicles. And these should be on the next new or used model you buy.

FCW technology provides a visual, audible, and/or tactile alert to warn the driver of an impending collision with a car or an object directly in its path. AEB responds to an imminent collision, braking if the driver doesn’t react in time. BSW monitors a vehicle’s flanks, warning drivers that another vehicle is alongside, where it may be difficult to see.

Other modern safety advances include telematics systems that can alert emergency personnel if an airbag deploys, such as GM’s OnStar service; lane departure warning systems that sound an alert if drivers change lanes without signaling; lane keeping assist to center the vehicle in the lane if drivers start to drift; and rear cross traffic alert that monitors the sides of the vehicle when drivers are backing out of a parking spot, and can even apply the brakes if needed. (Learn more about car safety.)

2WD vs. AWD vs. 4WD
Most SUVs use a front-drive platform and are available with all-wheel drive. Truck-based models have a rear-drive configuration and are available with four-wheel drive.

AWD and 4WD provide power to all wheels, but even though they sound similar, they’re not quite the same thing. AWD is a lighter-duty system that stays engaged and ready to vary the power distribution between front and rear wheels at any time. AWD is usually fine for typical adverse weather conditions and tackling dirt roads.

SUVS with true 4WD are few and far between. They have low-range gearing for tackling difficult off-road terrain, such as rocks or steep dirt hills. Drivers who travel almost exclusively on pavement without snow or ice, should consider a two-wheel-drive model; it will save on the purchase price and likely provide better fuel economy. These configurations are common in southern California, Texas, and Florida. Drivers who choose 4WD should look for a system that provides full-time 4WD operation. Don’t drive vehicles with part-time systems in 4WD mode on dry pavement, because they won’t be able to manage the power distribution front and back, affecting handling and potentially damaging the mechanical components.

Towing
Truck-based SUVs offer much more towing capacity than any other vehicle except pickup trucks. Most larger models can tow up to 9,000 pounds, or the equivalent of a large boat. Some powerful midsized models can pull as much as 5,000 pounds, enough for a small boat or camper. Buyers should look at the tow-capacity rating and be sure they get a vehicle that can comfortably handle the load they need to tow. Midsized and larger SUVs often require an optional tow package to reach that maximum rating.

Choosing Between a New or Used SUV
Like with any type of car, the first decision to make in choosing the right SUV: Will you buy new or used?

Buying a brand-new SUV certainly has its benefits. New SUVs have the very latest safety gear and engineering improvements, not to mention a bumper-to-bumper factory warranty. With a new vehicle, you know what you’re getting; you don’t have to worry about potential service problems or concealed collision damage. Further, you can have your choice of color, trim line, and option level. And financing rates are typically lower than for a used vehicle.

The key drawback to buying a new SUV is how quickly they depreciate. They’ve been known to shed half their value in the first two to three years. But the depreciation picture can change a lot from year to year, depending on competitive forces, fuel prices, new model introductions, and other factors. Financing a new vehicle with a small down payment can easily make buyers “upside down” on the loan, where they owe more than their SUV is worth.

Buying a used SUV can save money up front and over the long haul. Plus, the U.S. used-car market is more than twice than the size of the new-car market, so there are plenty of choices. One of the best strategies is to find an SUV you like that’s only two to three years old—likely a vehicle that’s been returned from a lease. Such a vehicle has already taken its biggest depreciation hit and should have the majority of its useful life ahead of it. Modern vehicles, if soundly maintained, can stay on the road for 200,000 miles or longer.

Buyers should be wary of SUVs that have been heavily upgraded for off-roading. Modifications such as oversized wheels and tires, and steering and suspension changes can affect how an SUV will handle in a panic maneuver, such as an emergency lane change to dodge an unexpected road hazard. Improper equipment and installation can cause accelerated wear, leading to expensive repairs. Mud and dirt in crevices, under the hood, or in hard-to-reach places, as well as dents and scrapes underneath the vehicle, can be an indicator1 selecting a good new or used SUV, even if the vehicle’s still covered by its original factory warranty. Check with Consumer Reports to find ones that have top-notch reliability scores.
