PoliticsThe kingdom of Benin by Binidefender(op): 2:21pm On Apr 26, 2019
The kingdom of Benin began in the 900s when the Edo people settled in the rainforests of West Africa. By the 1400s they had created a wealthy kingdom with a powerful ruler, known as the Oba. The Obas lived in beautiful palaces decorated with shining brass.

Gradually, the Obas won more land and built up an empire. They also started trading with merchants from Europe.

For 200 years Benin was very successful, but in the 1600s the Obas started to lose control of their people. By the 1800s Benin was no longer strong or united. The kingdom came to a sudden end in 1897, when a British army invaded and made it part of the British Empire.

How did the kingdom begin?
Around the year 900 groups of Edo people began to cut down trees and make clearings in the rainforest. At first they lived in small family groups, but gradually these groups developed into a kingdom.

The kingdom was called Igodomigodo. It was ruled by a series of kings, known as Ogisos, which means ‘rulers of the sky’.

In the 1100s there were struggles for power and the Ogisos lost control of their kingdom.

The Edo people feared that their country would fall into chaos, so they asked their neighbour, the King of Ife, for help. The king sent his son Prince Oranmiyan to restore peace to the Edo kingdom.

Oranmiyan chose his son Eweka to be the first Oba of Benin. Eweka was the first in a long line of Obas, who reached the peak of their power in the 1500s.

Oba Ewuare was the first of five great warrior kings. His son Oba Ozolua was believed to have won 200 battles. He was followed by Oba Esigie who expanded his kingdom eastwards to form an empire and won land from the Kingdom of Ife. Ozolua and Esigie both encouraged trade with the Portuguese. They used their wealth from trade to build up a vast army.

The fourth warrior king was Oba Orhogbua. During his reign, the empire reached its largest size. It stretched beyond the River Niger in the east and extended west as far as present-day Ghana.

Oba Ehengbuda was the last of the warrior kings. But he spent most of his reign stopping rebellions led by local chiefs. After his death in 1601, Benin’s empire gradually shrank

Kagawa10:
See this one. I already stated that only the royal throne has Bini blood, not the natives.

Besides, we all know why the children of the royal house have been emphasizing on their Bini blood after some Yoruba folks had wanted to forcefully remove Oba Akinolu and his royal families. It was a royal house politics which didn't concern the natives of eko island and these natives are the Aworis.

Question that should be asked is what bini culture did the Bini king leave in the royal house let alone at eko island at large? None. Because the royal house wasn't even a pure Bini blood to begin with. It has been diluted right from the start when the first king married a Yoruba woman who gave birth to a female child who eventually married a Yoruba man that replaced the Edo king.

What I'm saying is that the fact that the Awori once had a Bini king over them doesn't make them become foreigners in their own land. Except you have turn into a British or have your land become a British land as a result of once having British leaders in Nigeria, you're only speaking trash.
I have already told u that aworis are settlers in lagos they paid their royalties to the Benin that owned lagos,
If you don't want to belive that you can believe whatever your mutilated history tells you, ,because that's what afonjas are good at, changing history to favour them, even when they have no fact

Awori Own Lagos and Not Benin, we are talking about the Original Settler on a Land, not some terrorists from far away places that came to the Land before they were chased Out. Dahomey people paid tributary Status and Royalty to Oyo Empire does that means Benin Republic is also part of Yoruba Land?

Bro areas like Epe, isheri/ ikeja, Ibeju - lekki and Ikorodu amongst other numerous places had no contact with Bini kingdom and they had their own monarchs

Most Yorubas from this areas belongs to Yorubas of the ilaje, Awori, ijebu, some Egba and gun( a non Yoruba group from Dahomey)

The only Yorubas to have contacts with Bini were the Aworis on the island,

It is believed that in the quest to expand the Benin empire around the 16th century, the then oba of Bini ordered the invasion of lagos island, but on getting to the island the peaceful Aworis struck a deal with the Bini army.

They decided to pay tributes to the oba of Bini in return to keep their lands.

Thus, the oba of Lagos originated from Bini, but he doesn't own any land in Lagos. It still belongs to idejo chiefs ( the Awori chiefs).

However, the coming of the British put an end to payment of the tributes.

Stop reading fake history

The Yorubas in ibeju

ikorodu

Epe/ lekki

from ota, isheri to Ikeja

Even on the island the Benin monarch that ruled doesn't own any land it belonged to the idejo (Awori chiefs) A Yoruba clan also found in Ogun state.

I will agree with you that the Binis were the first non Yorubas to arrive at Lagos, not Igbos, not Hausas not even the British.

Go and read your history books
You don't know what you are saying you are the changing history to suit you and your people
you come from one village in Ogun or Osun or Oyo, and try to re-write the history of EKO!!!
