The President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, on Tuesday in Abuja appealed to Nigerians to rally round Kogi workers by donating relief materials to them.

Mr. Wabba, who was answering questions from journalists on the Kogi worker who committed suicide on Friday, said this was necessary in order to avert another act of suicide.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Edward Soje had taken his life after going 11 months without his monthly salaries.

“With the suicide mission embarked upon by the state worker, it shows that Kogi state workers are already internally displaced.

“This unfortunate suicide mission by the Kogi worker is an issue that should worry all Nigerians, as non-payment of salaries is becoming a reality among workers in the state,’’ Mr. Wabba said.

He disclosed that the NLC would soon have an audience with the governor of Kogi State in view of the fact that the plight of workers in the state was becoming worrisome.

The NLC president however pointed out that non-payment of salaries had assumed a dangerous dimension in the country by leading to workers committing suicide, and should be tackled headlong.

He said the labour union would also take its case to the National Assembly.

“We will be demanding that the legislative body should urge governors of affected states to pay salaries when due.’’

Mr. Wabba however said it was unfortunate that the Kogi governor had two weeks ago during a courtesy call on President Muhammadu Buhari claimed that he was only owing two months’ salaries.

He added that it was more embarrassing that the same governor had, through the state’s Head of Service, later owned up that his government owed Mr. Soje only eight months’ salary.

“This is an issue the NLC will not take lightly. We are resolute and we will mobilise our people to protest the non-payment of salaries in Kogi.

“We have learnt however that the governor is in the habit of using thugs to harass people, but we shall be there, because we know he is not ready for dialogue,” the NLC president said.

NAN reports that the late Mr. Soje, who was a Director in the Kogi State Civil Service, had committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree in Lokoja, the state capital.

He was a Grade Level 16 officer in the State Teaching Service Commission at the time he took his own life.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) say Kogi workers have been reduced to beggars by virtue of being owed salaries and allowances “for a period of three to twenty-two months”.

The unions expressed shock on the suicide of Edward Soje, a director in the state civil service.

“Workers are walking the streets of Lokoja like beggars because their salaries and allowances have not been paid for a period of three to twenty-two months by the government,” the state TUC and NLC said in a joint statement.

The statement signed by Olakunle Faniyi and Kolawole James, state secretaries of NLC and TUC, called on the Kogi government to publish the names and the amount being owed cleared workers and pensioners in the past 21 months.

‘MANY WORKERS, PENSIONERS HAVE DIED’

Onu Edoka, state chairman of the NLC, has appealed to workers in Kogi State not to see suicide as a way out of the current hardship imposed on them as a result of non-payment of their salaries.

He said the wife of the director who committed suicide had not yet been informed of his demise.

NAN reports that a source close to the family said a team of pastors and relations who visited her at an Abuja hospital to break the news were advised by the management against it due to her state of health.

Edoka said many workers and pensioners had died due to non-payment of their salary and pensions by the state government.

According to him, many workers in the state have had their ailments aggravated as a result of lack of salary.

He said high blood pressure and diabetes had become common among them.

Edoka said organised labour had started compiling statistics of workers and pensioners that have lost their lives in the last one year, adding that figures of victims would soon be made public.

The NLC chairman called on President Muhammadu Buhari to come to the aid of workers in Kogi by sending foods, drugs and other relief materials to them through the National Emergency Management Agency.

He also pleaded with the presidency to set up a fact finding committee to come and ascertain the true situation of things with workers in the state.

The chairman expressed displeasure with the state government for taking to the pages of newspapers to publish the names of workers and their salaries.

He explained that the figures quoted by the government was not correct and urged the governor to invite the workers to the negotiation table.

PRAYERS FOR KOGI

Bayo Adelaja, a reverend at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Lokoja has urged Kogi people to fervently pray for the state to enable it surmount its present challenges.

Adelaja, who made the call while delivering a sermon; ‘God’s hand on the city’’ in Lokoja on Sunday, noted that there was the need for prayers following so many unpleasant happenings in the state.

According to him, everyone must pray against every satanic formation for God to intervene in the affairs of the state.

He said there were so many issues surrounding the state, and urged Christians to be very prayerful during the ember period.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has revealed that the process for the recall of Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, was being delayed by the court and the legal process initiated by the lawmaker.

Yakubu, however, insisted that the agency will not give up.

He stated this in Abuja on Tuesday, during a dialogue session with civil society organisations under the aegis of Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room.

Yakubu also said INEC has learnt some lessons from the Melaye recall process and has now reviewed its regulations and guidelines.

“These are legal processes. We cannot, as law abiding agency, ignore the court and just proceed.

“Supposing we do so, proceed; conclude the process and the court nullifies it? So we said we will continue to obey the law on this matter of recall. But I will not like to say more, because the matter is already before the court,” he said.

The House of Representatives has mandated its Ad Hoc Committee on Bail-out Funds to investigate non-payment of salaries of Kogi workers and report back within one week.

The House also mandated the Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) to within one week report and explain the utilization of Salary Bail-out Fund given to states.

The directives followed a unanimous adoption of a Motion of Urgent National Importance moved by Rep. Sunday Karimi (Kogi-PDP) at the plenary presided by the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara on Tuesday.

Moving the motion, Karim said in spite the federal statutory allocation, salary bail-out funds and Paris Club refund received by Kogi Government, non-payment of state and local government workers salaries lingered.

He said Mr Edward Soje, a Director in the Kogi Civil Service Commission committed suicide for not being able to meet his obligations as a father and a husband.

The legislator said the deceased took his life after his wife was delivered of a set of triplet at an Abuja hospital last week.

The lawmaker explained that the late senior civil servant was being owed 11 months salary which made it difficult for him to meet his responsibilities.

According to Karimi, the situation of Soje is the lot of the majority of the civil servants and pensioners in the state.

He expressed concern that the state government had opposed to and refused any authority to investigate the non-payment of staff salaries.

According to Karimi, if nothing is immediately done about the situation in Kogi, more civil servants who were frustrated will commit suicide

In her contribution, Rep. Nnkiruka Onyejeocha (Abia-PDP), she said it was sad for parents who worked for kogi government go several months without pay.

Onyejeocha called on legislators to support the motion and urged the committee to treat the matter with high speed.

Rep. Jimoh Olajide (Lagos-APC) commended the mover of the motion for the courage to speak for the people of Kogi.

He said the function of government was basically to ensure the welfare and security of the people.

According to Olajide, a situation where civil servants are committing suicide, nobody knows what is next.

The lawmaker, who advised the three tiers of government to be considerate and just, urged Nigerians not to commit suicide, no matter the difficulty.

The House urged the Federal and State as well as Local Governments to priorities payment of salaries.

The former acting governor of Kogi state and one time member Board of Trustees of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Clarence Olafemi has announced that he is joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
Olafemi made this known while addressing newsmen in Lokoja on Sunday.
The former Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly said himself and all his supporters across the state are joining PDP because there was no sincerity in the reconciliation of APC in Kogi.
He said they reached the conclusion to defect because the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello has decided to drive the original members of APC from the party. He also noted that the national body of the party cannot be trusted.
“Shortly after my return from abroad, my political group held meeting and we resolved on three options, the first option was to wait for the outcome of reconciliation initiated by APC at national level whether it will pacify our members.
“Some members who were not satisfied with the option said were of the opinion that neither the state governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello nor the party leadership at Abuja can not be trusted because there was is several reconciliation committees , but nothing comes of them at the end of the tunnel.
“The second option of his political group was to moved to APDA, a new political party, but the party may not be able to make impact as a result of funding and other factors associated with a new party.
“The third option was to move to the People Democratic Party since it was our former party that we defected from and we can not be new there. My supporters intended to wait till December this year, but when the party announced their wards and local government congresses, my supporters across the three senatorial districts of the state moved enmass to PDP in order to be part of the Congress.
“The broadcast made by Governor Bello during the 2017 independent day cerebration where the governor said that he does not regret any of his action taken and has no apology for any body on the appointment made so far, has further convinced us that the governor can not be trusted.
He recalled that it was only two months of salaries Late Abubakar Audu and Captain Idris Wada owed when they lost re-election in 2003 and 2015 respectively and wondered how Governor Bello would be able to escape the sledge hammer of the electorate in 2019 governorship election in Kogi state.

Unknown gunmen in Okene Local Government area of Kogi State on Friday evening ambushed officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agent (NDLEA) on duty, killing 3 on the spot.

The attack occurred last Friday evening around 8:30pm when six officers of the agency were on duty at one of their post around the main gate of the Federal College of Education (FCE) Okene where Onwumere Nicholas, Peter Ebun Olumuyiwa and Abdulrahman Musa lost their lives.

Peter Olumuyiwa is from Ogidi, Ijumu local government area of Kogi State.
An eyewitness, to newsmen that the incident which occurred around 8:30pm left three officers of the NDLEA dead while three others escape unhurt.

He disclosed that the hoodlums ran away with two rifles belonging to the deceased officers.

Confirming the incident, the Kogi state Commandant of the NDLEA, Alhaji Idris Bello, said three of his men fell to the guns of the hoodlums in Okene , while on patrol on Friday evening.
Bello added that NDLEA together with other sister agents in the state have put all necessary plans in motion to arrest the perpetrators of the heinous act.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State has said it is befuddling how the Governor Yahaya Bello administration is still able to find a voice in the midst of the bedlam and hardship that its “clueless policies has fostered on the unsuspecting good people of Kogi State”.
In a press statement signed by party’s Director for Research an Documentation, Achadu Dickson, PDP said the recent allegations made by the state government against former governor Ibrahim Idris stands truth on its head.
Achadu said the former governor led one of the most successful administrations ever known to the people of Kogi State.
“Once again, and for the umpteenth time, attention seekers and barefaced liars are on the prowl in the Confluence State. After an unsuccessful attempt by government to politicize and sweep under the carpet the inalienable agitations by workers in the state to demand for the payment of their salary arrears ranging from 2- 22 months, the Yahaya Bello administration turned its discredited propaganda machinery against former Governor Ibrahim Idris.
“In their latest antics, Kingsley Fanwo Director General, Media and Publicity to Governor Bello described the former governor as a failed politician and accused him of non-performance while in office. The only evidence adduced for the tag is the often recycled claim that Idris did not extend electricity to Abejukolo his ancestral local government headquarter. They are also unhappy, that the opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP is putting its acts together ahead of the imminent victory in 2019 general elections. They accused Idris of being the arrow head of the party’s reconciliatory moves in the state.
“It beats the imagination of right thinking humans, how the Bello administration is still able to find a voice in the midst of the bedlam and hardship that its clueless policies has fostered on the unsuspecting good people of Kogi State. But, being that as it may, we wish to clarify as follows:
“The brush of failure with which Idris’ traducers sought to tar him stands truth on its head. At the risk of sounding immodest, Idris led one of the most successful administrations ever known to the people of Kogi State. The International Market; the Specialist hospital; Confluence Stadium; Greater Lokoja Water scheme, housing estates in Otokiti, Ganaja and in the 21 Local Government Areas; Dualisation of all major roads in Lokoja, construction of about 2,000 primary school blocks of four classrooms each; massive infrastructure development in the rural areas are some of the legacy achievements of that golden era that people will not forget in a hurry.
“In addition, the political and financial support Idris gave to the State University, Anyigba ensured the accreditation of all its 29 programs in 29 months by the National Universities Commission, NUC. In 2012 when Idris left office, the university was the best among its peers in the whole country. It is also instructive that Idris constructed Lokoja- Ajaokuta road, a federal project, which refund of N12bn was recently paid to Gov. Bello. Needless, to say that a failure could not have attained such enviable records.
“When Idris defeated an incumbent and took over power in May 2003, he inherited unpaid leave bonuses and two months salary areas. He cleared all within a few months of assuming office. He also implemented relativity and a new minimum wage, making civil servants in Kogi State among the best paid in the country and the envy of all states in the North-Central. That is not all. In all his years in government, salaries, allowances, bonuses and emoluments were paid as and when due.
“Non payment of salaries which today is the signature of the Yahaya Bello maladministration was an aberration in the days of Ibrahim Idris in power. The most unfortunate thing however, is the fact that Bello’s so called ‘New Direction Movement,’ has proven incapable of a simple task of ascertaining or admitting the extent of its liabilities to the workforce.
“Alhaji Ibrahim Idris brought integrity, seriousness, fairness, prudence and equity to governance. Projects were sited and executed on the basis of needs and not whimsically on a chauvinistic consideration of the governor’s place of birth or proximity to same. Whereas the claim that Abejukolo lacked electricity during Idris’ tenure is completely untrue, his, was far from the nepotism in place in Kogi state today. We state emphatically that Abejukolo had light all through the period Idris was Governor. The people of Abejukolo are alive, and Fanwo’s haste to rewrite history with blatant falsehood cannot fly.
“It should be worrisome that one of the earliest projects embarked upon by Bello was the construction of the road to Agassa, his village. Sadly, the road is on the verge of being abandoned today.
“Fanwo’s claim that Idris gave contracts to one of his children and mismanaged N10bn monthly are tales from the pit of hell. All through the period Idris was in office, the highest allocation to the state was N3bn. The funds were prudently managed to record the landmark achievements of that era. It is instructive that although Bello have been collecting an average of the same N3bn monthly since he became Governor, he has frittered it away in loose living.
“We challenge Fanwo to either disclose the name of the son that got contract running into billions of Naira under former Governor Idris and other details or keep silent forever more. Indeed, it remains a mystery how a so called ‘Evangelist’ has so conveniently adopted ‘lying’ as second nature.
“Ibrahim Idris, Failed politician? Something must be terribly wrong for anyone to describe Ibro in such words. Let us check the facts. In his first outing in partisan politics in 2003, Idris won the governorship ticket of an opposition party, and proceeded to win the general election, leaving a major casualty in an incumbent whose love for power was extra-ordinary. He won re-election in 2007. Even when the election was annulled in 2008, on a rather technical ground that a candidate was unjustly excluded from the poll, Ibro again won the rerun election landslide, and distinctively governed the state for Nine years. He is the only Nigerian, living or dead who has accomplished such feat. He did not stop at that. After completing a statutory two terms in office, he led his party to another election victory on Dec. 3rd, 2011 and handed over power to a candidate of his choice, as his successor.
“Conversely, the only election in which Yahaya Bello stood as an aspirant, was far from being a success, as he did not even scale through the qualifiers. He was given a bloodied nose, in the 2015 All Progressives Congress, APC primaries in which he came a distant second to the late Prince Abubakar Audu. Now, as a governor (appointed, stray or circumstantial) Bello has demonstrated gross inability to inherit a political structure, let alone building one.
“Certainly, Fanwo’s tirades against Idris are at best the hallucinations of a confused mind. In any case, the longest day has an end. The current jamboree will soon be over, and Bello with his band of e-politicians will be required to face the will of the people. Then, we will know who a failed politician is.
“It should be noted that no amount of nitwit attacks will discourage Alhaji Idris from the task of ensuring good leadership in the state. He is a citizen that values his freedom of speech and association. As an elder statesman who has the interest of the masses at heart he will not be intimidated by those who are afraid of their own shadows. Those who live in a glass house, must be wary of throwing stones. Gov. Bello should call his attack dog to order, and halt this open desecration in the village square,” he said.
Achadu urged Governor Bello to role up the sleeves and get to work.
“He should find ways of paying workers salaries rather than dissipating energy looking for a fight. We advice him to leave Ibrahim Idris out of his woes. A word, as they say, is enough for a wise”

There is confusion in Kogi State as the Abuja-Lokoja highway is completely locked down following the alleged killing of a tanker driver by the officials of the state revenue board.

According to an eyewitness, the revenue officials were said to have flagged down the truck driver which was coming from Maiduguri and heading to the South West at about 1:00a.m, early Wednesday morning.

His vehicle was said to have been impounded until he paid a revenue fee of N5,000.

This was said to have generated a heated argument between the truck driver and the revenue officials which later escalated to physical fight.

The eyewitness also said one of the revenue officials, who was said to be dead drunk, allegedly hit the tanker driver with an iron object, which led to the death of the driver.

This was said to have infuriated other truck drivers who, in a show of solidarity, parked their vehicles on the highway.

The revenue officials were said to have vanished into the bush.

Hundreds of motorists passing the highway are currently stranded as movement of vehicles had been halted.
