EducationRe: Who Is ASUU Really Fighting For? by Bishops10(m): 6:49am On Jul 28, 2022
khadaffi:
I'll drop my comment. Let me cough first

Edit
This issue had been previously overflogged here on NL. I think around 2010 or 2011, before that NL crash .

ASUU is another political organisation. I pity for any silly student that joins ASUU in castigating the government. I graduated in 2007 and before I
graduated, every strike ASUU engaged in they kept saying they were fighting for student. And my questions has always been how? See I know my position is not the popular one but if we all sit down and apply common sense you will see the sense in what I'm saying. Now ask yourself, how many of these top ASUU chairman kids attends schools in Nigeria. If we are saying our leaders destroyed the country ASUU are among the leaders destroying Nigeria and the earlier Nigerians realise this the better. A Professor is a Nigerian leader, A VC is a Nigerian leader, etc

Now here is the crux of the matter. There is no reason why any of these civil servants (Doctors, teachers, journalists, Police, Army) should go on strike, I repeat no reason. In Nigeria however we have seen doctors going on strike abandoning patients who might even be on life support to die simply because government did not pay them enough. How crazy does that sound. It is also the same madness that has continually occurred in the teaching profession. Now I'm not holding brief for government. Nigerian government has been useless over the years to say the least. There is no civil servant that will tell you today that he/she is satisfied with what the government has done in their agency and praise the government. But how many of them do you see engaging frequently on strike? I want to use the Nigerian Army in this regard as a case study. These guys has never gone on strike even when it was clear that government bought fake bullet proof and all manner of nonsense that have been meted out on them. These guys are still on the job. It is not easy. It's not easy for anyone in this country and the least we would expect from unions is to alleviate or reduce the problem of the common man. My own humble submission is for government to either scrap the Union(ASUU) or they could make it in a manner that joining ASUU should not be mandatory. Rather there should be two or three recognised union where every staff can choose to join any and choose who and when you will pay your dues. The dues should not be automatic deduction from your salary. The Union are thieves and if NANS was still a credible union it should have engaged them seriously.

I expect to be insulted for this opinion though
The current President of ASUU Prof Osodeke Emmanuel, his children attended school here in Nigeria, Infact the same Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) Abia State where he Lectures.

Firstly say what you know ...Enugu water board still functions , imo still functions ...but the reality is it's far more economical to dig a borehole down south ...it's cheaper 80k to 400k ..and you won't spend more than 5k per year for pumping water
Sorry Sir, Which Imo state? You obviously don't live in this state.

The Otamiri water Board behind Chisco that has gone moribund for years?
The last time I saw Government Supplied water(Within Ikenegbu) was during Udenwa's tenure or Maybe early years of Ohakim's Tenure.
PoliticsRe: #osundecides2022: Eight Factors That Helped Adeleke Defeat Oyetola by Bishops10(m): 6:57pm On Jul 17, 2022
sreamsense:
All those factors are irrelevant, reason for his defeat is because he was given opportunity to prove himself in good governance but failed to impress people. There was no visible significant things he has done in remote towns and villages that people can point to. He started building roads in many remote towns and villages when election was approaching which people believe he was only doing that to canvass for election because he may soon abandon them.

He also abandoned good policies of Aregbesola without replacing them with convincing alternatives. Another reason why people voted him out is that he is too dull, no charisma like Aregbesola. Adeleke was only elected because APC did not provide better alternative. Adeleke is just given four years to prove he myself if he has something to offer beyond dancing. If he turns government house to club house or dancing hall, he will be sent packing in the same manner. People of Osun don't hate Tinubu, they just don't want bad product of Oyetola.

You might be surprised that by next year, Tinubu may gather above 80% of Osun votes, because they know him as personally competent, but they never want somebody to hide under him to grab second tenure after glaring non-performance from Oyetola
They've won you people and you all are out with Yeye Analysis......yimu

"I'm disappointed honestly, a very high percentage of this gender only think about Marriage/Husband,not that they are ready for it but because Nkechi, Favour, Blessing are Married.

Most of them singing this have Indirectly chased many men away with their bad character.

Channeling this energy to something more resourceful will go a long way helping you become a better woman thereby positioning you for Marriage.

In this generation filled with Prospects, this is all we can get, very sad.

EducationASUU Strike: Abia Varsity Students Berate FG Over Lingering Crisis - Punch by Bishops10(op): 7:57am On May 12, 2022
The students of the Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State, have berated the Federal Government over her failure to proffer a lasting solution to its lingering crisis with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The students also lamented that the incessant strike actions by the lecturers to press home their demands were lowering the standards of teaching and learning in the various public universities in the country.

The MOUAU Student Union Government Public Relations Officer, Chijioke Emmanuel, told our correspondent that the development was heart-breaking, adding that the reality of the incessant industrial actions haunts the students’ minds.

He pointed out the students were outraged that strike actions have undoubtedly become part of the university’s academic calendar such that it now appears to be that no session is duly completed in public universities without at least a warning strike action which could last for a few weeks, or a full blown strike action, such as the ongoing strike in the country.

He said, “ASUU has embarked on industrial strike actions for a record number of at least 22 times from 1981-2018, and according to ‘dataphyte’, ASUU has also spent one in every four days on strike in the last 6 years. In recent times, at least from 2017 to 2020, the number of days spent on strike in Nigerian universities has seen a growth from 8.9% in 2017 to 68.4% in 2020.”

“The question of whether or not strike is the answer is a bit difficult to answer in a binary format, and the Student Union Government has charged the Federal Government with irresponsibility and unintentionality on their part for not allocating up to at least 26% of the annual budget to improving educational standards, frameworks, and structure in the country, which has been the core of the strike actions embarked upon by the union.

“This is disdainful on the part of the Federal Government, for the government ought to know that national development, scalability and international industrial competitiveness of any nation are driven by sound and quality education at all levels, especially at the tertiary/university level. And any form of neglect in this part will plunge the nation into underdevelopment, long term.

“There is a need for urgent intervention from the government to end, not just the present strike action, but to also inhibit future strike actions by fulfilling the reasonable demands of the Academic Staff Union Of Universities as far as infrastructural development of universities academic welfarism is concerned.

“There have also been concerns over payment system where the union has refused to accept to enrol their members in the IPPIS payment structure because of its impedance on the autonomy of the universities, and the FG’s doubts about the integrity of ASUU’s UTAS payment algorithm.

”This disagreement made over conference tables has only sent students away from their reading tables, and the resultant effect of this is borne heavily by the students who are slowly, but increasingly, losing regard, thirst and hunger for education. This country will lose global competitiveness in technology if this continues, because the students who are being prepared to compete globally and bring this country to achieving its potentials are out of school because of poor planning and hesitant implementation of the right policies.

“ASUU, on the other hand, should be considerate in making demands and probably find another alternative to pressing home their demands than strike actions.

Also, Nduka Ifeanyichukwu, a 200 level student of the university, expressed his disappointment over the development.

He said, “I am currently in 200 level, and in the two sessions from 2020-2022, I have experienced about 10 months of non-academic activities due to the strike, and more will come if the FG doesn’t do something urgently.”
