Two British fighters who were captured in Ukraine have appeared on Russian state television and asked to be exchanged for a detained pro-Kremlin politician.
Shaun Pinner, 48, and Aiden Aslin, 27, were defending the southern city of Mariupol with Ukrainian marines when they were captured. Today they appeared on Russian television and asked Boris Johnson to help bring them home.
They asked to be freed in exchange for Viktor Medvedchuk, a Ukrainian opposition figure who has previously been described as President Putin’s right-hand man in Kyiv. It is unclear how freely the two Britons were speaking, having been prompted by an unidentified man.
n a separate video released by the Ukrainians today, Medvedchuk appealed to Putin and President Zelensky to exchange him for Ukrainian soldiers taken prisoner by Russian forces. The opposition leader, 67, was captured by the secret services last week after escaping house arrest three days into the invasion. His wife has proposed swapping him for the two Britons.
Pinner, a former British soldier from Watford, said he had been fighting in Mariupol for five or six weeks and was now in the “Donetsk People’s Republic”, a breakaway state. Aslin, a former care worker from Nottinghamshire, was shown handcuffed and bruised in a propaganda clip after his capture last week.
Pinner served in the Royal Anglian Regiment for nine years. His Facebook posts indicate that he was in Bosnia for the UN Protection Force in the 1990s. He joined the struggle against Islamic State with the Kurdish People’s Protection units, known as the YPG, in Syria.
A statement from his family last night said he was “not a volunteer nor a mercenary” and had been serving with the Ukrainian military since 2018, since becoming a marine. They said they were working with the Foreign Office to ensure Russia upholds his rights as a prisoner of war under the Geneva Convention. The Foreign Office has been in contact with the families of the two men to support them.
Earlier in the weekend the state television channel NTV showed a tired looking Shaun Pinner, 48, and said he had been serving in the 36th Marine Brigade “which surrendered several days ago”. Only Pinner’s head and shoulders could be seen in the video. He spoke clearly and without emotion. No injuries were visible.
So do you know better than the US government that created NATO to counter the Soviet Union and is currently funding a war against Russia?
Don't quote me anymore if you decide to continue being unrealistic.
Lol! How ironic? Just look at you now...quoting the US to support the invasion of Ukraine. The USSR died in 1991, that's public knowledge. The US will obviously want to have a weak Russia as it's former enemy- it's logical. That's their opinion. But all former USSR do not agree
Shoodboi: Why will you believe the countries I'd name are friendly with Russia if you wouldn't believe factual statements that are right there on the NATO, EU, and Library of Congress links that I posted?
NATO itself makes it clear on the 3 reasons NATO was founded in a decasified document on its website:
The Soviet Union only asked to join because they thought NATO was founded to prevent another European war (which was what the US kept telling them)
Please read and digest these and if you'd reply me, use appropriate reference from appropriate websites as I did here. Thanks.
This is crystal clear, did the 3 core reasons say ' NATO was established to "attack or invade Russia"? Is Russia USSR? Does the USSR exist again? USSR died in 1991, just in case you forgot.
So if the East, West and North of Nigeria go their separate ways the North will still be refer to as Nigeria?
NATO is a defensive alliance, only those with sinister motives will be afraid of it. After all, Russia is not the only former member of USSR that's not a member of NATO. Why aren't others complaining ? Why is Putin the only one disturbing Europe's peace?
When Sarah says that all men are rapists people think she hates men not knowing she's speaking the facts.
Watch the video first and tell me whether it's not the girl raping the boy. The girl was the more active of the two in the video. Remember they are both minors
Shoodboi: Using the same logic, wouldn't I be correct if I say ex-Soviet states that joined NATO are acting out on a script by the US?
There is no record of Putin (or Russia) giving anyone any script but there are records of the US urging ex-Soviet states to join NATO. This started right after the fall of the Soviet Union when the US created the North Atlantic Cooperation Council to act as the first step to getting ex-Soviet states (other than Russia, which was the major bloc in the Soviet Union, and considered the successor of the Soviet Union) into NATO.
Also, lots of ex-Soviet states have super-good relations with Russia, so I don't understand why you're fingering Belarus and making it appear as if every ex-Soviet state hates Russia or want to join NATO.
Again, I'll take you to this quote from NATO's website:
It is often said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded in response to the threat posed by the Soviet Union. This is only partially true. In fact, the Alliance’s creation was part of a broader effort to serve three purposes: deterring Soviet expansionism, forbidding the revival of nationalist militarism in Europe through a strong North American presence on the continent, and encouraging European political integration.[/b]
The boldened is the main reason why NATO was founded. You should understand that WWII stripped the UK, Japan, and France of their superpower status, leaving US and the Soviet Union as the two economic and military superpowers left.
And both were trying to spread their ideologies throughout the world in their bid to expand and win more influence. The US spread capitalism while the Soviets spread communism. It was this communism the US was trying to counter with NATO.
And we see that through the Cold War and series of physical wars that occurred in the late mid to late 20th and even early 21st centuries, capitalism spread, making the US richer and the Soviet Union and other Communist states poorer as a result, leading to its collapse.
Now, regarding the Soviet Union wanting to join NATO, the Soviets thought NATO was founded to stop another war in Europe (as US told everyone at the time) without realizing it was formed to counter their influence. They soon found out though, leading them to be wary of the association.
You also need to understand that UK and France planned to invade the Soviet Union during WWII until of course, Germany invaded France, leading the UK and whatever was left of the French military to focus on fighting Germany. (Germany would later invade the Soviet Union too, dragging it into the war). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Pike
The US and UK were still interested in invading the Sovieet Union and even drew up plans, but abandoned them because the Soviet Union was too powerful. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Unthinkable
And why do they hate the Soviet Union so much?
Because Russia negotiated a surrender with Germany during WWI, leaving the American, French, and British to continue fighting the war.
Russia didn't leave the war because it wanted to. It left because its rulers were overthrown during a revolution and the new rulers were not interested in continuing the war. https://www.loc.gov/exhibits/archives/sovi.html
Kindly name the former USSR that are still friendly to Russia aside Belarus.
The bolded is your emphasis and interpretation. I've told you the primary objective of NATO was not to attack Russia but to be ready to defend smaller nations from being subjugated by Putin. Its obvious in the fact the USSR did put up a proposal to join for its own sinister purpose, but the request was declined for its intentions
If Russia and the US are giving out scripts and Russia's neighbours are accepting the US but rejecting Russia's what does that tell you?
Ishilove: Whether she was 'riding' whatever or not doesn't make it consensual. A minor cannot give consent to sex, no matter the circumstances. Mind you, if you post any video here, I will report that post. There is zero tolerance for child pornography globally
They are all minors.
From the video it can even be concluded that the girl raped the boy because she was more active.
Shoodboi: Putin never signed any pact with Ukraine. Russia did. And it signed the same deal with Belarus and Kazakhstan who gave up their nukes.
Also, Ukraine (and these other countries) did not have control over the weapons as the launch codes were with Russia. So the nukes were more or less useless unless they found a way to get the codes from Russia.
14 ex-Soviet states (including a few sharing borders with Russia) have joined NATO so it's false to assume that Russia has issues with ex-Soviet states joining NATO.
However, Russia has issues with Ukraine and Georgia joining because they share large land borders with Russia.
And Ukraine's case is worse because it controls Russia's access to the Black Sea (Russia has limited access to the ocean) and can block ships from exporting stuff out of Russia. Russia's other access to the ocean are in the North Sea which is frozen for most time of the year.
Asides that, Ukraine is super-close to Moscow. Kyiv to Moscow is a 1 hr 15 min flight, and the flight would be shorter when undertaken at some location closer to the Russian border.
Now, imagine NATO (which was founded with the sole purpose of invading the Soviet Union) keeping military hardware, aircraft, and soldiers, right at those borders?
I've taken time to bold some false comments you made. Those I'll address.
Of cos Russia has issues with ex USSR that don't act it's script or it's friendly with the West. As long as you act the script Putin hands over - you're good. Examples is Belarus. It's the only state Putin is not threatening and we all know they're his dummies.
NATO was the aftermath of the WW2. Democratic nations had to form an alliance to overpower future dictators like Hilter. Even Russia made attempt at joining NATO but could not meet the requirements .So NATO wasn't primarily an alliance to attack Russia but to defend against evil and non Democratic tyrants. It's just a coincidence that Putin is a tyrant . Russia's neighbours started taken shelter in NATO when Russia started invading some of them. Since Russia has become a predator, they went to NATO, NATO did not come to them.
Claims of joining NATO is just a ploy by Putin to invade Ukraine I just don't understand why that is hard to comprehend. This is a Putin that signed a pact never to attack Ukraine if they give up their nuclear weapons. The real question is why are all Russia's neighbours looking for protection but Russia don't want them to have that protection?
Shoodboi: This is what Ukraine should have done from the onset:
Join an economic alliance founded to unite Europe but no, Zelensky went on to try joining a military alliance founded to destroy its neighbor.
Unfortunately, switching from joining NATO to joining the EU in the middle of a NATO/EU-funded war is very suspicious, and clearly a poorly hidden plot to apply for NATO membership after joining the EU.
I've often told people, a president can't afford to be religious, especially if you're an American president with all the freedom of expression.
Obama just balanced everything to accommodate all interest. Sometimes, you have to do something against your own conviction
Krss216: I laugh,so cos em take picture for church come mean say e no dey evil? Dem dey write am for head,if you like go church from now till next year, you are evil you are evil.
The people pardoned are in APC when Alam was pardoned Wike wasn't this vocal.
The noise Wike is making is all political. All these politicians cover each others. And it the common man against them.
It cost lots of tax payers money to prosecute these corrupt politicians only for them to be granted stated pardon- it's sad
Maryjane001: This is the reason why I like Wike. He says his mind clearly and no matter what, you can do him nothing. He fears no one.
I v always objected to this presidential pardon and amnesty given to Boko Haram and terrorists. For me, any body them catch and you are found guilty of terrorism, na death sentence straight and it will happen that very day. Corruption and bribery laws for those stealing in Government would have to be very strict. Like seizing all the person's properties and sending them on exile. Reason I like China. Not the nonsense Nigeria is doing, you steal 200bn and bail out with 200 million. Bullshit.
First of all, that Nigeria's Constitution has to be amended then the whole Judicial system and the armed forces too. Too many loopholes. Those corrupt politicians when caught would get the best lawyers to twist the law to their own benefit and bribe a lot of hands.
demmie1: If you know the rules you will not say this. Nukes are not baby games, if Russia tries it, Russia too will collect, even China no go for do anything.
He who give, go collect. That's nuclear war rules
In times like this, no country will want to be first to be pushed to fire nukes.
The Nuclear Path which Russia is also a signatory states that no Nuclear Power should provoke the other by firing nuke. If Russia does it first, it'll be the culprit
All this anger from Putin is because if there is to be any conflict between the US and Russia, Russia will simply be a sitting duck. The US has allies all over Europe and Asia, especially in Eastern Europe. And striking and intercepting any Russian missile will be a piece of cake. Whereas, Russia doesn't have any allies in America.
Amatuer2pro: you think Moskva will sink like a chicken, want thing i know is russia does not bluff like west, if west really mean well for the world they should back and stay in their lane.
Ohislee: If US truly wants world peace, they should start by disbanding all military alliances like NATO.
Military alliance are like cult groups. An attack on one is an attack all and this is a threat to non members of such alliance.
As an individual, I don't know how you will feel if your next door neighbour, joins a deadly cult group that are your one time enemy. This means, they can start having their meetings next door. The slightest misunderstanding with your neighbour, becomes a misunderstanding with the entire cult group. I believe this is what Russian is trying to avoid.
Aside this, cult groups give rise to other cult group. Most people join this groups for protection. This can also be said for military alliances. It would give rise to rival military alliance.
NATO is a cult. Russian is within their right to defend itself from cultist.
Russia is also part of a fragile alliance with China. Blood oath is not involved. Just meet certain democratic conditions. The alliance is to protect smaller nations. Remember, the US is the world's capital, as such it's a father figure to all nations.
You neighbours will only make alliance for protection if you are a bully with sinister motives.
I'm disappointed you didn't mention how Russia has been trying to subjugate all former Soviet Union members by increasing its nuclear status while neglecting it's economy. With the number of nuclear bombs in Russia neighbouring countries have no choice but to look for protection. Because there is no how you'll live together and their won't be fighting
The House of Representatives, on Thursday, has said nobody will be sanctioned for the supply of adulterated Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as petrol, which caused a major crisis in Nigeria’s fuel chain and untold hardships on Nigerians.
At the plenary on Thursday, the House considered and adopted the reviewed report on the investigation by its Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), which exonerated both the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, former Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, and the suppliers in the Direct Sale-Direct Purchase deal between the Federal Government and the importers.
Tempers had frayed in the House on February 10, 2022, over the importation of methanol-contaminated petrol. Several members who spoke on the development called for sanctions against Federal Government agencies and officials who failed to carry out due diligence before passing the product for onward distribution to marketers. The House had consequently resolved to investigate the matter, insisting that those in the import and distribution chain, whose action or inaction led to the spread of the commodity, must be held accountable.
The Majority Whip, Mohammed Monguno, had moved a motion of urgent public importance, titled ‘Need to Investigate the Release and Sale of Adulterated Premium Motor Spirit in Petrol Stations Across Nigeria.’ Adopting the motion, the House mandated the Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) to “investigate the release of adulterated PMS across the country, with a view to ensuring that culprits are brought to book as well as make recommendations towards curbing a reoccurrence of such incident.”
The House also asked the committee to “ascertain whether the Nigerian specification concerning importation, distribution and dispensing of the alleged toxic petrol in Nigeria, from January till date, complies with international standards.” Also, the lawmakers further asked the committee to “investigate the roles played by the NNPC Limited, Standard Organisation of Nigeria, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigerian Navy, any other government regulatory agencies, limited liabilities companies and individuals in the unfortunate episode.” Furthermore, the House asked the NNPC Limited to suspend the four companies involved in the importation of the adulterated PMS.
However, the committee had presented a report which failed to address the main issues for which it ordered the probe, causing the House to reject it. Several members of the House had, on March 23, 2022, criticised the earlier report by the committee as failing to hold any persons, group or company responsible for the development or recommend sanctions.
