Nigeria - Land of Comedy - So some people bbq goats with Michellin tyres - na wo no wonder it has that rubbery taste. |
General Manager of Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), Dr. Cosmos Ndukwe, has raised the alarm over health implications of consuming goats roasted with tyres. According to him, the act could cause cancer, kidney problems and madness, among others. Speaking when members of the executive of Correspondents Chapel of Abia State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) paid him a visit in his office in Umuahia, Ndukwe said efforts were on to relocate slaughterers from Aba river and to stop them from using tyres to roast goats killed in the area, because of its grave health hazards. He also complained that despite repeated warnings, the slaughterers still roast killed animals with imported tyres, thereby contaminating the meats with heavy metals such as lead, which he said could hardly be removed through boiling. He also said the agency had reduced discharging of effluents into the river by 70 per cent, saying slaughterers operating in the area needed to be relocated to achieve total eradication of water polution. Ndukwe also said ASEPA would embark on intensive public enlightenment to save the state from the menace of electronic waste (e-waste) with its attendant environment pollution. http://www.tribune.com.ng/02082009/news/news9.html |

NO fewer than 20 passengers were yesterday crushed on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway by a truck during a robbery operation. Hours before the 20 victims met their untimely death, two passengers lost their lives in an accident on the Ijebu-Ode/Ore end of the expressway when two vehicles were involved in another accident on Friday night. Sunday Vanguard gathered that in the first accident, involving a passenger luxury bus XF 285 AKD, and a truck XN 808 BEN, happened in the wee hours of Saturday around the Babcock University, Ilisan and Odogbolu areas of the highway. It was learnt that the passenger bus, said to be heading to the Eastern part of the country ran into a gang of armed robbers operating on the expressway with a huge log of wood blocking the expressway. Chief Executive / Corp Marshal, Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Osita Chidioka with his men and Acting Inspector General of Police Ogbonna Onovo. The robbers were said to have ordered the passengers to disembark from the bus while a sizeable number of them were ordered to lie flat on the road as the hoodlums ransacked the vehicle and the other passengers unhindered. A trailer, which was said to be on top speed and unaware of the dangers ahead, was reported to have run over the victims, killing 20 of them, before skidding off into the bush. The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission, Ogun State, Mr. Olu-Mike Olagunju, who confirmed the incident, however, said he was not sure what caused the accident. Olagunju, who described the incident as “very unfortunate”, added that the dead included 13 men and seven women while two men sustained serious injuries. He said “what we sustained serious injuries. He said “what observed was that there was no dent on the luxurious bus, which indicated that the vehicles did not run into each other. The most likely cause of the accident could be because of activities of armed robbers.” The sector commander restated the campaign of the commission that people should avoid night journeys. “We have said it over and over again that people should avoid night journeys. If people do not travel at nights, there is hardly a way that kind of accident would not be avoided. At least the truck would have seen people lying on the road while the motorists would have even known that robbers are operating on the road.” He confirmed that the accident which claimed two lives around 10.45p.m on Friday night involved a white Toyota Hiace, marked XQ 201 EKY and a blue Bedford lorry with registration number XA 565 WER. He added that 20 people were involved in the accident where five passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2009/08/01/20-passengers-crushed-during-robbery/ |

Indications are emerging that President Umaru Yar’Adua will be up against multiple opposition groups which have started mushrooming, and all silently positioning themselves to take over the reign of power in Nigeria by 2011. From investigations, the performance rating of the president, noted to be dropping by the day, has been encouraging more opposition groups to spring up, even as the hitherto visible ones have started oiling their machinery to make impressive showing in the next general elections. Indications to this effect have started emerging with moves by some governors, noted to be eyeing the Presidency, to court notable traditional rulers, mostly from the North in a bid to secure their blessings for their ambition to become the next president. Although the governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has been the only serving governor who had openly declared ambition in taking over from President Yar’Adua in 2011, Saturday Tribune gathered that other governors from the North are equally warming up for the next presidential race. Investigations revealed that the ambivalence of most of the emirs and other traditional rulers across the country to the government of President Yar’Adua has been a key reason they seem to be available for courtship by presidential aspirants. The royal fathers, checks revealed, have not been warming up to the present government, and, indeed, the President on consideration that they are not being carried along in the government’s policies and programmes, a reality that contrasts with the experiences they had during the past government in which case they were usually top confidants to the man at the helm of affairs. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Saturday Tribune investigations revealed, is also set to give the President a good fight in the next presidential election as indications are rife that he has started making contacts with his supporters across the federation to brace up for real business ahead of the next presidential election. It was learnt that the Atiku’s Campaign Organisation, which he has left intact since he bowed out of office, is now counting on time to get into action once he makes up his mind on the platform to use in actualising his desire. General Muhammadu Buhari is also a strong factor in the scheme to wrest power from the incumbent President through the ballot in 2011 having set machinery in motion to raise a new political party following reported plans by the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) to whittle down his ambition. Feelers from the camp of the General who had contested the presidential election two times now is that he would any moment from now make his ambition known publicly, and that is after concluding the consultiations which he has been having with his known supporters across the geo-political zones of Nigeria. http://www.tribune.com.ng/01082009/news/news11.html |
I wash my hands off Nigera - Not in my name - Definately a failed state |
THE military offensive against members of the extremist Boko Haram Islamic group claimed more casualties yesterday. A suspected sponsor of the sect, Mohammed Yusuf-led sect, Alhaji Buji Foi, was given summary execution in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital by the police. His execution took place at the state police command headquarters in Maiduguri. Foi's death came 24 hours after Yusuf was killed in action. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Christopher Dega, confirmed the death of Yusuf, during a gun battle with joint military/police team on Thursday. He said quite a number of policemen were killed during the four-day battle with the Yusufiyya sect members in Maiduguri. Curiously, Foi was a Commissioner for Religious Affairs during the first term of Governor Ali Modu Sheriff. Before then, he had served twice as Chairman of Kaga Local Council, among other top public offices in the state. Foi, said to be a wealthy man, was arrested yesterday morning in his farm by the operatives of the Operation Flush 11 led by its commander, Col. Ben Ohanatu, where he allegedly camped women suspected to be wives of the sect's members. The former commissioner allegedly used his connection in the state to provide shelter for the fundamentalists. Before his execution at about 7a.m. yesterday, Foi was driven on the back of a police patrol van to the Government House by Ohanatu with his hands tied to the back. The troops had planned to show him to the governor but when Ohanatu discovered that Sheriff was not in the office, he headed for the headquarters of the Nigeria Police and handed him over. He was, thereafter, executed. Sources closed to the outfit said the former commissioner engaged the members of the Operation Flush in a gun battle for a long time, using a double barrel gun, which he allegedly acquired when he was a council chief. Briefing reporters on the circumstances that led to the death of Yusuf and suspected areas the fanatics were still hiding in the state, Dega said the sect leader died in a "crisis situation." According to him, during a confrontation with the troops, Yusuf sustained injuries. Dega said: "The sect leader did not survive the injuries he sustained at the battle field, after he was picked up. He died Thursday afternoon." On the number of policemen that died in the crisis, he said: "There are a lot of casualties, but we are not releasing the figures now, until we are able to compile a comprehensive list of policemen and sect members that died in the four-day battle in Maiduguri." Even though the police are on top of the Maiduguri crisis, he said "not all of them (sect members) have fled; there are still pockets of areas where they are living among the people." Dega said Yusuf had prepared to launch a war against the state government considering the quantum of arms and ammunition found in his house that the military shelled. He said: "After the shelling, we recovered guns, locally made bombs, explosives and knives in the arms dump." He added that the police were still recovering more weapons and ammunitions. The police boss confirmed that the bodies of sect members killed by the military would be given mass burial. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/news/article01//indexn2_html?pdate=010809&ptitle=Boko%20Haram%20Suspected%20Financier%20Executed |

The leader of an Islamic sect blamed for days of deadly violence in Nigeria has been killed in custody, police officials say. The announcement came just hours after police said they had captured Mohammed Yusuf in the city of Maiduguri. Mr Yusuf leads Boko Haram, which wants to overthrow the government and impose a strict version of Islamic law. His followers have been blamed for violence in the north-east that has left more than 300 people dead. "He has been killed. You can come and see his body at the state police command headquarters," said Isa Azare, spokesman for the Maiduguri police command, told Reuters news agency. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8177451.stm |
